Eddie had tried to make small talk with the girls, but when neither answered, he turned the radio louder, letting the music fill the awkward silence.
Wayne, Eddie's uncle, had left the small porch light on, which everyone was grateful for as they made their way from the van through the heavy darkness.
Sarah followed the other two into Eddie's trailer, ignoring the barking next door. On the drive over, she noticed that Chrissy was nervous by how her leg kept bouncing, making the heel of her shoe thump on the van's floorboard.
Eddie rushed around the living room, picking up discarded clothing and empty foot containers." sorry for the mess the maid took the weekend off," he said, laughing awkwardly.
Chrissy offered him a small smile.
Sarah moved past them towards the couch, ignoring the strange burnt smell in the air.
Chrissy slowly twirled around as she studied the room, only pausing to look at a few items around the room. "So, you live alone?"
"With my uncle, but, uh, he works nights at the plant," said Eddie pulling a Kitchen drawer open. "Bringing home the big bucks."
Chrissy turned fully to face Eddie as he closed the drawer and moved to rummage in another one. How long does it take?"
Eddie paused and looked up "pardon?"
"The Special K. How long to kick in?"
Eddie moved down to the next drawer. "Oh, uh, well, it depends if you snort it or not. If you do, then, uh, yeah. It'll kick in pretty quick. He offered her a smile. "Oh shit." He said, realizing the item he was looking for wasn't there either.
"Are you sure you have it?
Standing to his full height, he nodded his head. "No, no, I got it. Um, somewhere."
Sarah and Chrissy shared a look when he whirled around, heading down the short hallway to the back of the trailer.
Chrissy stepped close to Sarah and offered her a smile, seeing that they would be alone for a moment. "I always wanted to tell you that I liked your singing."
"Huh?"
"When my family has time, we visit your dad's church. Your voice is beautiful."
Sarah smiled.
Chrissy looked away. "
Sarah sighed. " I know I shouldn't be, but I'm jealous of you." Her tone was sad.
"Why?"
Sarah nodded towards the hallway that Eddie went down. "He has the world's biggest crush on you. But you have like this perfect life. A mom who is still alive. A guy who returns your feelings enough that he'd fight for you. Then there's Eddie, who would do anything for you if you asked him despite your boyfriend hating him. While I only have my dad, and yes, Eddie cares for me but not like he does you."
Chrissy didn't say anything.
"And the saddest thing about all this is that I can't find it in me to hate you. Because you make Eddie happy..." Sarah paused when she noticed that the only sound she could hear was coming from Eddie in the other room.
Chrissy hadn't twitched when Sarah called her name.
Sarah stood to her feet slowly and looked Chrissy in the face. She could hear Eddie walk up behind her as his words broke off.
"Chrissy?"
The girl didn't move.
Eddie tried several times, calling the girl's name but not even shaking her or snapping his fingers in her face seemed to do anything.
Sarah wanting to help, reached out to touch Chrissy's shoulder. And as soon as her hand touched Chrissy's sweater, the lights in the trailer started flickering.
Feeling uncomfortable with how s going on around him, Eddie nudged Sarah to the side and gripped Chrissy's shoulders tightly, ignoring Sarah's whimpering.
To their shock, Chrissy's body seemed to grow taller. Sarah let out a yelp of fear as she staggered away. Eddie looked down and noticed Chrissy's feet no longer on the floor but slowly rising from the ground. Stepping back next to Sarah, they both screamed as Chrissy's body slammed against the trailer ceiling.
They watched as her arms and legs snapped, bending unnaturally. Her jaw sprang open then it twisted to the side with a horrible crack.
Eddie moved backward as he grabbed Sarah, trying to escape the nightmarish scene. They tripped over his feet, landing on the floor in a heap as their eyes locked on Chrissy's face.
Sarah felt something trickling down her pants as the seat of her pants grew warm. Subconsciously she realized that she had wet her pants.
The room seemed to freeze when they noticed a wet sucking sound. Looking closely, they watched as Chrissy's eyes sucked backward until they couldn't anymore.
A loud wet pop fills the air as blood fall from empty sockets.
Eddie's scream turned high-pitched just as Sarah closed her eyes for a moment, trying to hide from the scene before her.
Sarah's body froze as she prayed to wake up. A moment later, she felt a hand on her stomach as a warm body pressed up behind hers; thinking she had been having a nightmare, she sighed. She looked down she noticed that she wasn't lying down but standing in a field of flowers dressed in a white summer dress that bunched up due to the hand which was caressing her stomach where a tiny baby bump stood out. She noticed that the hand belonged to a pale man; the hand almost swallowed her baby bump as it rubbed back and forth. She saw the man's hand bore long fingers and no ring on it. But something about the hand made a voice in her head scream danger.
Turning to see who was holding her, she noticed two thick white strips of hair had fallen into her face blocking her view for a moment.
The hand reached up and brushed the stands behind her ears, allowing her the full view of a tall blonde-haired man. He was staring with a smirk on his lips and blue eyes sent that sent shivers of fear down her spine.
She tried pulling away, but he wrapped his hands around her upper arms, holding her in place as her legs moved beneath her, slipping on whatever she was standing on.
A voice behind her made her jump as he rang through the air with an angry growl.
"Let her Go."
Both the blue eyes of the man holding her looked toward the speaker. She felt her heart stop at the voice. She turned her head and froze in awe, wanting to know who spoke. Standing a few feet away from them was a man dressed all in black. When he noticed her staring, he allowed his brown eyes to stare at her for a moment; they were full of love. They shifted upwards to glare at the man holding her captive.
"I said let her go."
Her captor chuckled and shook his head, not saying a word.
Sarah ignored the hands holding her in a brutal hold as she felt her heart speed up. Her gaze traveled over the man's black clothing and up. His long brown hair framed his face nicely as thick brown curls cascaded over his broad shoulders. His five o'clock shadow gave him a mischievous look. She looked away from the man's face when she felt the tiny kick of the baby in her womb. It shifted and moved as another one of its limbs pressed against its haven. The child was letting her know that it was there and could feel the strength that emanated from the man.
Sarah could feel something snap in her mind screaming for her to fight back, get away, and find safety. To protect the unborn child, she was carrying.
Not expecting it, the man holding her released a snarl when Sarah's foot landed on his shin at the same time she threw her body backward, trying everything to break his hold. He released a demonic snarl when her fist landed on his face. He pushed her, almost throwing her away from his body. She flew backward, but before hitting the ground, the man in black caught her. Pulling her tightly to his side, he turned them to face the blonde man.
Sarah could feel the scream in her chest as the blonde man's whole body melted away, leaving behind a nightmarish creature in its wake. But before she could release it, the man holding her turned her away from the scene, making her look him in the eyes. His hand cupped her cheek softly. "Sarah, wake up."
"Who are you." She asked when her body relaxed in his warm hold.
"I need you to wake up, Sarah."
Slowly the world around her disappeared, and she noticed she was back in Eddie's trailer. Looking around, trying to catch her breath, Eddie held her by the shoulders, screaming for her to wake up.
Looking past him, she saw Chrissy's broken body lying in front of the tv. She felt the memories of what had happened a few moments ago push their way forward, making her shiver in horror.
Eddie pulled her to him and cried in relief as she tucked her head between his neck and shoulder. He knew he needed to get them up and out of the trailer as fast as possible.
Sarah's crying slowed, which allowed her to catch her breath. She pushed back from Eddie and caught sight of the wild look in his eyes. She had seen the look on his face before, he wanted to run from the danger, and she wouldn't stop him this time because she wanted to run away too.
Eddie rose from the floor and tried to pull Sarah up with him, but she shook her head, refusing to stand. Worried, he waited for her explanation with a questioning look in his eyes.
"I wet my pants," she whispered in a low embarrassing tone.
He felt like crying for her. In all the years of knowing her, she never let anything embarrass her. Not when she got so sick on junk food she threw up on his bed. Not when she walked down the hallway with a big blood spot on the seat of her pants, not knowing until he wrapped his jacket around her waist that she had started her period.
So, seeing her like this was new to him. Eddie was so used to it being him embarrassed about things and her bailing him out in some way. She ensured that no one realized he did something worthy of making fun of him.
Where he was weak, she was the strong one.
Realizing that she was counting on him, that he needed to be the strong one this time, he took a deep breath. He gave her a wink, rushed to his bedroom, threw his dresser drawer open, and snagged a pair of clean boxers; then, he turned and pulled one of his tightest jeans from his closet.
Sarah felt her insides twist when he raced back to her carrying a small stack of clothes. After taking them, she noticed he turned away, giving her enough privacy to change but still be nearby in case something else happened.
Neither forgot the body behind them, and they knew that they need to get out of there as soon as possible. As soon as Sarah finished changing, he ran into the kitchen, gathering a few items and stuffing them into a brown grocery bag before turning and rushing Sarah back to the van. He threw the van into drive and pressed the peddle to the floor. The van sped away, only slowing down to turn a corner before heading out of the trailer park.
In their rush to get away, they didn't notice the young girl next door had been watching them as they ran, speeding away into the night.
That the girl was their only witness to the grizzly crime scene, they left behind.
