This takes place shortly after the end of the final mission of Black Ops. It is a one shot, of Mason reflecting on his life. I made Mason have a family, yes. It seemed to be where I could think of the most dramatic flashbacks for him.
Disclaimer: I don't own Black Ops.
Mason sat in the chair, eyes closed. He was awake, but he wasn't sure if he was sane. What he had just done had escaped from his mind. All he remembered was being in a sinking ship, strangling a man to death. Why he did it, he didn't remember. All around him, men were talking and celebrating.
Mason didn't know why.
His memory kept fading, his consciousness wavering. The long term memories stuck with him, but he kept forgetting what had just happened.
And numbers kept repeating themselves. Yet they were getting quieter, like a song ending. But it was enough to drive a man mad.
And Mason feared it had already happened.

"We need to get Mason home to his family before he goes insane."
"We may be too late."
The voices cut into Mason's thoughts, and his eyes opened. He sat in a bright room. The chair was in the middle, but there was a long table also.
Two men looked over at him, looking concerned. Mason closed his eyes, trying to ignore them.
"Promise me you'll come back in one piece, Alex. We need you."
The voice rang out as though she was in the room. Mason went stiff with emotion. His wife, his love. Amelia.
"I promise, love."
To promise such a ridiculous thing, it was risky. Especially when you're seven year old daughter heard you.
"Daddy, you'll come back. Right?"
"I promise, Sam."
"Good. And a promise is a promise!"
He went rigid with pain. Why did he promise? Sure, he was going back. But was he in one piece?
"Someone has to explain Mason's situation to his wife." A voice quietly murmured. Mason almost didn't hear.
"Who? Does anyone even know the whole story? Woods is dead, so that's out."
"I can." Hudson cut in, quietly. There were agreements, and then Mason was given silence, which right now was not such a great thing.
"We'll be right here, waiting when you return." The day he left, the day he boarded the train. His wife and daughter standing on the platform with him. The painful good-byes, Woods screaming at him to hurry, Sam laughing at Woods.
"There's just no turning back..." Mason uttered gruffly, gasping for breath. He opened his eyes, and saw three men staring at him. Hudson patted him on the shoulder.
"We're on our way."
Then Mason noticed the floor moving. He realized they were in a train, and he felt nauseous. Would his family even want him back when they realized his was partially insane?
"We love you no matter what."
No matter what seemed good, except it was different in this situation. Mason had his mind altered in Vorkuta to kill president John F. Kennedy. That no matter what seemed to cross the line a little.
But he hoped that didn't show in any way.
What seemed like days later, but was only a few hours, they arrived at the station. Mason stood with shaky legs and nodded to Hudson.
"You gonna break the news that I'm insane?"
"You're not insane. Just... a little mentally unstable. But we'll fix you eventually. In the mean time, yes I'll break it to your wife."
Mason nodded. Mentally unstable. A nice alternative, but it didn't make him feel much better.
He climbed off the train with what little luggage he had. Looking around, he saw Samantha running towards him. She almost knocked him with the force behind her hug.
"Daddy!"
"When you get back we're going to the park and playing hide-and-seek, okay daddy?"
Mason hugged her back, the memory hurting his head. They'd go to the park yes. The urgency in her voice then, it made Mason feel like he was going to cry. Like she had thought he though he'd promised, he might not come back.
"Sam!" He picked her up and carried her back towards his wife, leaving his luggage. Hudson grabbed it for him and rushed ahead to speak with Amelia.
"You didn't break your promise!" She giggled.
"Did you think I would?"
"No." She said quietly. She knew that it meant if he had, he'd be dead.
"Mrs. Mason, a word?" Hudson asked. She nodded, looking bewildered. "While gone, Alex was taken to Vorkuta, a war prison. There his mind was altered, and he is unstable. At times he'll think a man named Victor Reznov is around, when he does tell him Victor is not there, that he is dead."
"Altered?" She asked, sounding worried.
"Altered to think he needs to kill President Kennedy." Hudson confirmed bravely. Amelia looked shocked, but Mason had arrived then with Sam.
"Well, it was nice to meet you, Amelia, and you too Samantha." Hudson nodded.
"You too, Hudson!" Sam said, smiling. Hudson smiled back at her and walked away, leaving Mason's luggage.
"He told you?" Mason asked quietly as they headed to the car. She nodded.
"It's fine though, Alex, because we'll make sure your okay. We love you no matter what."
"We love you no matter what."
Mason almost grinned as the memory was repeated in his mind.
And suddenly, he didn't feel so crazy.
Writing that was a bit different, so please tell me what you though. I don't know how it might come off! But if you liked it, then great! If you didn't, then tell me why, please. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed and thanks for reading!
