Snoring
Pippin snores. Merry found this out the hard way after one too many sleepless nights next to him in the wilds. He learned to kick Pippin just hard enough to stop the snoring, and eventually, he got so good at it that he could kick Pippin without really waking up himself.
This was very difficult to explain to Estella some years later, but that's a matter for another day.
