A/N: I'm on a posting high right now.
Anyway, a bit of background. In this universe, I have the Idea that James and Lily were ina relationship until Lily had to move to a different kingdom/township. Then a war takes place, and James and Lily end up on different sides of the war. This fic is a peek into a possible meeting between them.
Lily sat on the log with her arms folded tightly, waiting as the snow fell around her. She jumped at every sound, sure that something would attack her.
But it would be her fault if she were to get into such a situation. Hestia had warned her it was dangerous.
But she had to see him for herself.
She had to see he was alive. She knew they hadn't seen one another in years, and the chances were slim that their relationship would be the same as it was at age seventeen.
But a piece of her heart would always be his, and the recent battle had been so costly and violent that she had to make sure he was okay.
So she sent a message only he would understand. At least, she hoped he would. It had been eight years, after all. She had just about given up, assuming the worst, when she heard a voice behind her.
"Hey."
She stood up and spun around so fast that she nearly fell back into the snow.
There he was.
James Potter was standing in front of the snow-covered ivy. Relief flooded over her. Without thinking, she threw herself into his arms. He stumbled back but soon regained his balance and returned the embrace.
"You're okay," Lily said in a choked voice. "Thank goodness you're okay." James coughed and pulled back to look at her.
"Well, I won't be if you crush my ribs, Lily," he said with a smile, and as if she were seventeen again, all rational thoughts and words flew from her mind.
"You're okay," She said again. James laughed.
"Is that all you can say now?" he asked.
"No," Lily said, "I just- I was so worried. And I know it's been years, but- I had to know." James nodded in understanding.
"Well, I'm flattered," he said with a grin. "You know, I was a little more than surprised when I got your message. I didn't know you were here. If I had..." he scratched the back of his head. "Well, let's say I'd have been worried too."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
They fell silent for a long time, staring at their old meeting place, covered in snow and icicles. James finally spoke, and there was a slight shake to his come when he asked,
"How are you, Lily?"
"Okay," She said. "I've snuck into the army, as you can see. I've been training a lot. You?" A dark shadow crossed James's face.
"I'm alive," he said, "Which is saying a lot, considering how many men from Hogsmede aren't." He sighed deeply, putting his hands in his pockets. "I want the war to be over, Lily. We can't take much more of this."
Lily swallowed hard and wrapped her arms around herself. "It has to eventually. They'll see sense in the end." James shook his head doubtfully.
"Still the optimist then?"
"You know me," She said softly. Silence fell over them once
more, and Lily's mind and eyes began to wander back to her childhood.
"How's Sirius?" she asked when she met his eyes again. James rolled his eyes.
"Sirius is still Sirius. He's got a girlfriend now. Marlene finally gave into his charms and kissed him a few weeks ago. It's sort of annoying honestly. The two of them are absolutely revolting to be around." then his face fell, and his shoulders slumped. "But unfortunately, Sirius is out on the battlefield on the west front. I haven't heard from him in a while."
Lily closed her eyes, her throat tightening.
"Merlin," she said. "I hope he's alright." James sighed
"If anyone can survive the western front, its Sirius," he said. "But still." Lily nodded.
"Any news on Remus?" James brightened a little.
"Yeah," he said. "He got married, actually. To a woman named Nymphadora." Lily smiled brightly.
"Did he?" she said enthusiastically. "Well, tell him he's in trouble for not inviting me to the wedding. But let him know I say congratulations reguardless." James smiled.
"Of course," he said. "I would have told him to come with me, but..." he trailed off and sighed.
"Yeah," Lily said. "I know."
She took in their cold wintery surroundings, and despite the gloomy atmosphere, she managed to smile. "I always loved this spot in the winter. Remember how we used to skate on that pond?"
James snickered
"Yeah," he said. "I remember you fell through it once."
"And you fell out of that tree," Lily shot back.
"Touche," James said, still smiling. Lily sat down on the log again, gesturing for him to join her.
"Do you ever come by here?" She asked as James sat beside her.
Hey, someone needs to keep it looking presentable," he said, nudging her side playfully. "Since you left, no one knows about the place except me." Lily snorted.
"Don't tell me you come here to pull weeds and cut tree limbs?" James shrugged.
"Every once in a while, yeah. It gives me something to do when I'm not training. But sometimes I just come to sit and remember."
"Sentimental?" Lily asked.
"You could say that," James said, looking at her sadly. Lily met his gaze, and once again, the love she had for James Potter rose to the surface. And after what felt like an eternity, Lily managed to get her words out.
"I've missed you, James," She said. James nodded.
"I've missed you too. It just hasn't been the same. You'd think I'd be used to it after eight years, but no."
"Me too," She said sadly. "I still haven't really... forgotten."
And all too soon, there was a horn in the distance, the call to battle.
Lily's grip on James's hand tightened as he stood up reluctantly.
"I have to go," he whispered as he turned to face her. Lily shook her head.
"It isn't fair," She said. James gave a humorless laugh in response.
"It never was, though."
He was right, of course. Life had never treated them fairly.
"No," Lily shook her head. "It hasn't." She put her hands on his shoulders, trying to convey seriousness in her words. "Just be careful, James."
"You too," he whispered back. The two of them stared at one another. And Lily was sure that both of them were reliving their youth. The good and the bad. The joy and the tragedy.
I love you, she thought desperately. I still love you. Please be careful.
He gave her another sad smile and then kissed her forehead tenderly. She kept her eyes closed, fighting back the tears threatening to fall.
"I'm sorry," James said. "I'm so sorry."
"So am I," Lily said, eyes still closed.
Then she felt his hands leave hers, heard his retreating footsteps, and when she opened her eyes again, he was gone.
I love this ship. Please leave a review, they keep me going! Thanks so much for reading, and let me know if you want any more parts to this.
