I was walking through London, with a god on each side.
Perhaps, dear reader, you think I was used to situations like that by now. Trust me, it will never stop feeling surreal.
It didn't help Thor was still dressed in his armour, winged helmet on his head, Mjolnir casually swinging by his side.
People in Ealdwic are used to some odd views, but even they stopped and stared at the sight of the god of Thunder just strolling down the street.
I was wearing my dress armour, but it just didn't quite feel the same.
"I feel underdressed," Loki muttered at me. He was wearing black trousers, a white silk-blend shirt and sunglasses.
"You look fine," I reassured him.
Loki eyed me sceptically, then shook his head.
"No, I'm underdressed, can't do it."
His eyes glowed green, and his clothes were suddenly replaced by his familiar black, green and golden Asgardian armour. His horned golden helmet crowned his head.
Loki sighed happily.
"That's better."
I shook my head and grinned. It seemed that Loki couldn't bear the thought of being outdone by his brother. At least he was in a better mood now than he had been earlier that day.
Thor grinned too.
"Cow," he chuckled, referring to Loki's helmet.
"Chicken," Loki grinned back.
Without so much as a blink of an eye, Thor reached out behind me and slapped the back of Loki's head.
"Ow!" Loki exclaimed, his eyes flashing green.
"Ow!" Thor exclaimed, pulling a tiny dagger out of his side and showing it to me. "He stabbed me!"
I shook my head at Loki, who giggled and said: "What? He started it!"
I rolled my eyes.
"Can you two please behave with at least some dignity? Just until we are done at Temple Hall?"
We had decided the best thing to do was to go to Temple Hall and announce the arrival of Thor on Midgard ourselves. Loki hadn't been back to Temple Hall since after we just came back from Niflheim. It was going to be an interesting experience, even without the brothers behaving like big children.
The guards outside Temple Hall eyed the three of us suspiciously. I couldn't really blame them, the last time we were here Loki had caused quite a spectacle.
"They are with me," I said quickly before either Loki or Thor could say a word. It might be better if I dealt with the Templars this time. Loki had been in an odd mood ever since Thor arrived, and the brothers seem to bring out the worst in each other.
The guards hesitated regardless, nervously raising their weapons.
"Will you, or will I?" Thor asked Loki conversationally.
Loki shrugged. "I caused them to wet themselves last time I was here, why don't you do the honours? Have some fun!" He winked.
Wait, what now? I had no idea what those two were up to, but I had a bad feeling about it.
Thor just grinned at Loki and raised Mjolnir.
Lightning started flashing from Thor's eyes and clouds formed in the sky above us. In a matter of seconds, the sky was dark, thunder was rumbling so loudly the windows were rattling, and the guards were drenched by torrential rain. The three of us were the only ones remaining dry.
Oh. That was what 'have some fun' meant.
I glared at Loki, who was casually cleaning his fingernails with a dagger.
"What? I'm not doing anything," he smiled sweetly.
"Loki!"
Lightning started coming down all around us, striking near the guards but not hitting them. I felt I bit sorry for them as they jumped to avoid the bolts anyway. Their life really had become a lot more complicated all of the sudden. I knew the feeling.
"My name is Thor, Prince of Asgard, son of Odin!" Thor bellowed. "And I am the god of Thunder!"
He turned around smiled at me and winked.
"I taught him everything he knows, you know," Loki said conversationally.
I rolled my eyes. Were all gods such divas, or just the ones in my life?
"This is my brother, Loki, Prince of Asgard, son of Odin, and the god of Mischief." Thor continued, his voice loud enough to be heard on the other side of London.
"And with us, my sister, Sorcha, daughter of Liam, Worthy of Mjolnir, Chosen of Gaia, Knight Elect of the Knights Templar, Witch of Midgard."
Wait, was that me? I looked at Loki, surprised at the titles Thor was giving me. I mean, most of them were accurate I supposed, I'd just never been introduced that way before.
"His sister…" Loki facepalmed and shook his head. "He just had to make it weird, didn't he?"
"And now we have your attention, we are here to demand an audience with your leaders!" Thor gave his most winning smile.
"Thor!" I snapped, shaking my head in annoyance. I could have just walked in. I could have just talked to Richard or one of our superiors, but no, it had always to turn into a spectacle with these two!
"Oh yes, sorry about that, where are my manners?" Thor apologised.
"PLEASE!" he bellowed, setting off car alarms all throughout Ealdwic.
We were quickly granted an audience. I walked into Temple Hall between the brothers, who were arguing. Again.
"I don't see what I said wrong," Thor grumbled.
"Just think, you big ox! Why for Norn's sake, would you introduce Sorcha as your sister?"
"Because she is!" Thor sounded wounded.
"She is not!"
"I don't see how it was wrong!"
"If I am your bother…" Loki said with exaggerated slowness, "and she is your sister…" he raised his eyebrows expectantly, waiting for Thor to finish the sentence.
Thor stared at him blankly. I tried to hide a grin.
"... that would make us…" Loki made a rolling motion with his hands as if that would get the cogs in Thor's head moving.
"Bethrothed?" Thor finally offered.
"Siblings! You big stupid oaf! Siblings!
I have some very unsisterly plans for that woman later tonight, I'd prefer not to think of her as such, thank you very much!" Loki barked in annoyance.
"As a fellow Worthy of Mjolnir, she is my sister-in-arms, and once you two are married she'll be my sister-in-law!" Thor shouted back.
"That is different! Then introduce her that way! Oh, by Ygdrasill's gnarly roots, were you born this stupid or did Mother drop you on your head as an infant?!"
I tried very hard not to giggle. I saw Richard standing at the door of his office, motioning for me to come over.
I slipped away, hoping the brothers wouldn't resort to violence just yet.
"Is that…." Richard asked, motioning at Thor.
"My future brother-in-law, yes," I confirmed.
"Wow…Richard said in awe, "So that's what Chris Hemsworth wants to look like when he grows up!"
I giggled at him, the whole situation was just too absurd.
"Are you alright?" Richard asked in concern.
"I'm fine, I'm just having to babysit a duo of thousand-year-old Norse gods," I giggled again.
"Are any of your other in-laws dropping by too?" Richard asked curiously. "Because I'm not sure what the protocol is for dealing with the Norse Pantheon. I'm not even sure we have a protocol…"
"Oh, please, no! I hope not," I sobered up a bit. "Two of them is bad enough! I'd better go after them, while Temple Hall is still standing."
I mouthed an apology and ran after Loki and Thor.
Loki and Thor had already made their way into the same meeting room I had been in before. Loki was sitting down, lounging back with his black leather boots on the table, helmet still on his head. He should have looked ridiculous wearing it, but there was something about him that just made it work. It worked for me, at least.
Thor had put his helmet and hammer on the table and was going around the room, touching everything and curiously looking out of the windows.
I sat down next to Loki.
"Was that little show really necessary?" I asked.
"It got their attention," Thor rumbled cheerfully.
"It was just a bit of fun, darling," Loki grinned.
"Take your feet off the table," I hissed at him. Loki shrugged and took his feet off the table and lounged in his chair instead, his long legs poking out on the other side of the table, his elbow on the armrest while he rubbed his chin.
"Oh, hello…" he purred as the Templar leadership came filing in. They didn't bother looking at him, all eyes were on the huge imposing figure of his brother instead.
"It is an honour to welcome you to Midgard, your Highness," Dame Julia Beatrix Tyburn greeted Thor with a bow.
Loki raised his eyebrows, the corners of his mouth pulled down. He hid his mouth beneath his hand.
"They didn't bow or call me 'your Highness' when I first got here," Loki muttered grumpily, his eyes glowing green.
I could hear him as clearly as if he was standing right behind me, talking in my ear. Loki noticed my confusion and winked.
"Just a little auditory illusion, it has its uses."
"The honour is all mine," Thor replied graciously.
"May we offer you some refreshments, your Highness?"
"They didn't offer me refreshments when I first got here," Loki murmured bitterly in my ear.
I didn't think there was any use in pointing out he had been a criminal who had committed several crimes against humanity at the time, so I just sympathetically patted his arm.
"Some mead would be appreciated," Thor rumbled as he sat down.
"I'll have a cup of tea, not that anyone asked," Loki interjected.
It took a minute for everyone to sit down and for the refreshments to arrive. Several of the Templar leadership were looking rather wild-eyed at Thor.
It was one thing to have Loki around, having the rest of the Norse Pantheon appearing on earth was quite another.
Once everyone was seated, Thor had received his tankard of mead ("Where on earth did they get that so quickly?" Loki asked curiously in my ear) and Loki and I had been offered tea and biscuits, Lady Tyburn came right to the point.
"While it is undeniably an honour to be graced by your presence, your Highness, we can't help but wonder what the purpose of your current visit is."
"They are worried Asgard might start meddling in Midgard's affairs again," Loki explained to me, "the last time the gods played on Midgard it didn't work out so well for humanity. Let's reassure them, shall we?"
His eyes glowed green again, and he murmured something behind his hand, but I couldn't hear him this time.
Thor took a long drink from his tankard. I noticed his head was slightly tilted as if he was listening.
"The reason for my visit is social, not political," Thor said after a moment. "Asgard has no intention to meddle in your affairs. I am merely here to spend some time with my family."
I could see the others around the table relax a bit, Loki had been right.
"That does not mean Asgard is not concerned about the current situation you are facing. What affects one realm, affects the other. We are all connected by the branches of Yggdrasil," Thor continued, after taking another sip of mead, appearing to listen again.
I eyed Loki curiously. Was he telling Thor what to say? Loki winked and nodded at my unspoken question. "Diplomacy isn't Thor's strongest point."
"As long as I am here on Midgard, I stand at your disposal. We are, after all, on the same side. It will be my honour to lend my arm to our Midgardian brothers and sisters."
The Templars were quick to reassure Thor the honour was all theirs. Loki rolled his eyes.
"That should keep them off our backs for a while," Loki's voice spoke in my ear, "They won't be making any moves against us if they think we have the weight of Asgard behind us. They'll leave Thor alone as much as possible so as not to invoke Asgard's wrath, and hopefully us by extension."
Thor made reassurances to do his part in keeping The Secret World secret during his stay, and after exchanging some further pleasantries, we were ready to leave Temple Hall.
Just as everyone was standing up, Thor raised his voice.
"I have just one more question, if I may?"
We sat back down again. I looked at Loki who frowned and shook his head, he had no idea either.
"Almost a year ago, the Allfather sent my wife to Midgard, and I haven't heard of her since. You don't happen to know where Sif might be, do you?"
"You are married?" Loki asked incredulously once we were back outside.
"About eighty years or so ago," Thor grinned. "What, you didn't think you were going to beat me to it, did you? You've always been two steps behind me, brother, and you always will be."
"If I am, then it's only so I can stab you better in the back," Loki retorted instantly.
Thor ignored him.
"I would have invited you to the wedding if it wasn't for the small matter of your banishment and the fact that Sif would have killed you the moment she laid eyes on you."
Thor winked at me. "Sif really doesn't like Loki.
Father sent Sif to Midgard a while ago, without us even so much as getting a chance to say goodbye. He has refused to give me any explanation of where she is or what she is doing, and Heimdall wouldn't say either."
"We have had no dealings with Sif, if we had you would know," Loki reassured him.
"I'm sure if any of the other organisations knew about her, we'd know as well. We have friends in most of the organisations, and running into a god, or goddess, is still a big deal." I told Thor.
"Sif can handle herself, she's one of the strongest women I've ever met," Loki patted Thor on his shoulder.
"I know, Thor rumbled, "I just hoped you might know where she was."
Thor's eyes were sad, it was obvious he was worried and was missing his wife. Unable to help myself I hugged his arm. It was like hugging a bag full of bowling balls. Thor smiled gratefully and pulled me in for a hug.
"Oh Norns, now there are two of them, huggers both!" Loki rolled his eyes and deftly dodged before Thor could pull him in as well.
"I hate hugs," Loki lied, "Leave me be!"
"Why don't you take Thor clothes shopping, he can't go around looking like that," I suggested to Loki.
"Why me?" Loki asked.
"Because you like clothes shopping!" I said, annoyed.
"I don't, I hate it." Loki eyed me defiantly.
I glared at him until he looked away.
"Fine!" he said in the end.
"Oh, and Loki," I warned him, "you will get him some nice, decent clothes. No ugly Hawaiian shirts, no clown's suit, no spandex Elvis suit…"
"Oh, I hadn't even considered the last one yet," Loki's eyes lit up.
"None of that! Buy him anything ridiculous and I'll make you wear it for a week!"
"You and what army?"
"I don't need an army! I kicked your arse in my first week of work, do you think I couldn't do it again?" I yelled. I was practically standing with my nose against his, even if it did mean I had to stand on my tippy toes.
We glared at each other for a few seconds, and then Loki slowly began to smile.
"This possibly isn't the right time to mention it, but are you aware of how incredibly, irresistibly hot you are right now?"
I couldn't help but begin to blush and smile back. He was unbelievable sometimes, how was I supposed to respond to that?
"Will you just go," I grinned, "and get him something decent?"
Thor politely looked away as Loki kissed me instead of giving a reply.
I watched the brothers as they walked away together, both of them so different, both of them drawing attention to them from passersby just as they walked by.
I had the feeling that between my engagement to Loki and the arrival of Thor, my life had just gotten a whole lot more complicated.
