Authors note:
This one shot can really be placed at any point in season 1 and season 2A but their aren't really any spoilers.
Luz was bored. Indescribably, unbearably, incredibly bored.
During the day she could run around with her friends, go to school, play with king, basically anything she wanted. But when things wound down for the night. When Eda burrowed into her nest and king snuggled up at her or Luz's feet, and hooty did whatever he did to sleep Luz often found herself un able to calm down and make the shift from excitement and deadly scenarios to the calm of sleep.
In some ways King presence helped her, his snores lulling her to sleep and his incoherent mumbling entertaining her, but other times she felt trapped, not wanting to wake him with a shift of movement trapping her in her mind.
She needed something to do urgently and she could only read the good witch Azura books so many times before even they began to get stale. She wanted to ask Amity for recommendations of similar books but just kept forgetting until she was alone with her thoughts, at which point she could do nothing.
She had tried using her phone a few times out of desperation, despite knowing it would only keep her up, but with no internet she had quickly run out of things to do.
Luz was at the point where she was so desperate for sleep that she couldn't focus her eyes and she knew if she could just get comfortable she could fall a sleep, but a sleeping bag on the hard wood floor was the furthest thing from comfortable. So here she lay, king snores droning on in the background as her mind wandered from place to place.
She should catch up with the detention track students.
Would her bounty ever be worth more than Eda's?
Did she finish her homework?
Was she sure?
How was her mom doing in the human realm?
She immediately cut herself off. She had spent a-few nights falling into a spiral of doubt and anxiety and was not willing to go down that path again.
So Luz sat their twiddling her thumbs and quietly humming the tunes to her favorite T.V. Shows. By the time King had shifted on her feet for the third time she accepted that she would never be getting to sleep tonight, or maybe ever.
She closed her eyes and imagined what would happen if she never slept again. She followed many different paths. One where she was completely fine and went on to save the boiling isle's from Emperor Belos and re-started her and kings writing career again. Their was another where she fell asleep in class after a few weeks and humiliated herself. And a final one where she was so tired during her confrontation that he won and the boiling isle's was destroyed.
This thought panicked Luz so much that she fought harder to empty het brain and fall asleep.
She was so focused on her perceived failure that she never noticed when her thoughts began to get more and more incoherent as she slipped into unconscious. She only fully came to realize her success when Hooty burst through her window screeching,
" Wake up sleepy heads its 8:00!"
Authors note:
I wrote this when I personally was trying to fall asleep, unlike Luz i was unsuccessful, so it's pretty short and probably a bit incoherent but as I get ideas (or as ya'll give them to me) hopefully I can bulk up the book and improve the writing.
