Chapter 3:

Atem's return

About a week later, Yugi was walking through the Farmer's Market. She wore an oversized t-shirt and baggie pants that didn't show much. She was not ashamed or anything. She didn't feel like dressing up while she shopped. She wanted to make sure she had enough food for when Atem and his family arrived. "So, all I have left is rice for my curry meal." Yugi said, looking over her grocery list, smiling.

"Hey, Moto." Someone said. Yugi looked up to see Rex Raptor lending against one of the posts of the large pavilion they were under. "What do you want, Rex?" Yugi said, griping her bag tighter. She didn't trust Rex Raptor. After the KC grand championship, she heard he had been arrested several times for assault and rape. "I just want to talk. Is that so bad?" He said, pointing to a more private location away from the market. Even though she knew better, Yugi followed him but kept her phone out just in case. She hoped he just wanted to dual however she had a bad feeling.

Two days ago, she went on a news interview to explain her changes. Most of her fans were understanding. Some even sent her letter of encouragement and thanks for coming out. A few sent her hate letter, which she forwarded to Seto, who kept a watch on them to ensure they didn't try anything.

Once they got to a clear spot, Yugi confronted Rex. "I'll ask again, what do you want, Raptor?" she made sure he never left her sight. "Ever since you came out as a girl, which I still don't get but I have been watching you." Rex said, slowly backing her up against a nearby wall. She felt very nervous as he leaned in closer. "You have become cute. I want you to go out on a date with me. I promise you will have a good time." He said, placing a hand on the wall behind her. "Forget it, Raptor. I am not interested in dating right now." Yugi tried to move away from him, but he blocked her with his other hand. "Let me rephrase. You will go on a date with me." Rex said as he tried to kiss her, only for Yugi to slap him across the face. Rex growl at Yugi. "You are going to pay for that." He yelled as he grabbed her by the throat and started to squeeze, choking her. "Get…off… me." Yugi panted as she tried to push him off, quickly losing consciousness. "Once you out, I'll have my fun with your sweet ass." He said, laughing, then Yugi started to cry. He was going to rape her. 'Atem, where are you?' she thought.

Suddenly Rex was forced off her and thrown into a nearby tree knocking him out. Standing in front of Yugi was a tall, dark skin man with dark purple eyes with dark brown, almost black hair. Yugi looked to her right and saw who she thought was Ishizu, and to her left, she saw a man who could pass as her twin, only he was taller and had tan skin. She took a breath and looked surprised. "Atem," she tries to say, but Atem gently placed his fingers on her lips. "Don't try to talk. Let Isis heal your neck and throat first." He said. Yugi nodded as she felt her neck warm-up. After a bit, she was healed enough to talk, but it still hurt. "I heal as much as possible, but you will still need to rest," Isis said, smiling at her. Yugi nodded, still in shock, seeing Atem and what just happened.

"What do you want to do with this waste of space?" Mahad asked, sneering at Rex. He hated men who prey on women and rapists. "We can't send him to the shadow realm, and we don't have the power right now," Isis said, helping Yugi to stand while she was hanging onto Atem, fearing he would disappear. "Call the police. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a couple of warrants out of his arrest." She said. Atem nodded as he pulled out a cell phone and gave Yugi a look that told her they would explain later.

Fifteen minutes later, the police showed up and arrested Rex for attempted rape and assault. It turns out Yugi was right. Rex had two warrants for his arrest for a precious rape and several assaults. When the officers asked Yugi if she needed medical attention, Isis explained she was a new doctor at Domino general hospital and oversaw Yugi's injuries. It seemed to please the officers but told them they might follow up later if needed. After a few more minutes, they were clear to leave. Mahad grabbed Yugi's shopping bag and headed to a 1969 mustang GT soft top nearby. Atem helped Yugi into the back seat along with himself. "Where to?" he asked as he looked into the rearview mirror. "The Kame game shop," Atem said, noticing Yugi seemed to be in a daze. Isis told him she might be in mental shock and to be gentle and patient with her. Mahad nodded and started to drive away.

Without realizing it, Yugi slowly leaned into Atem, who wrapped an arm around her. Yugi felt a warm and welcoming presence in her mind, one she haven't felt in a very long time. She knew it was Atem. Her bond with him had also returned, for which she was extremely grateful. Atem also noticed the bond returning and was able to send her waves of happiness and reassurance. Yugi snuggled closer to Atem. Either one saw a slight glow around them. Both Mahad and Isis noticed but said nothing.

After 30 minutes, they arrive at the Game shop. Atem helped her out of the car and grabbed her bag. Yugi noticed there were more cars than usual in their driveway. Two large SUVs, one was grandpa's, a limo which she knew was Kaiba's, and a motorcycle. Yugi was about to ask, but she heard laughter inside the house. She entered her home to find they had a whole house full. Her friends, Tea, Joey, and Tristen were there. The Ishtars, the Kaibas, Atem's father Aknamkanon, Seto, and Mana. Seto and Kaiba were in the middle of the dual, where it seemed to be about even. Grandpa noticed Yugi was home as he walked in from the kitchen with drinks. "OH Yugi, you are home. Did you get everything you needed?" He said. "Bot exactly. I ran into a bit of trouble in the form of Rex raptor." Joey's expression darkens at the sound of rex's name. "What did that creep want?" he asked. Yugi cringes at Joey's tone, trying to erase the memory of what happened from her mind. "I am going to take a shower. I'll be back." She said as she bolted from the room.

Joey, Tea, and Tristen knew something was up. "Yug?" Tea said in concern. They watch her retreating form with worry in their eyes. "That deviant try to rape and kill her. We were lucky that Atem could sense her, or it could have been a lot worse." Mahad said, taking a drink from Grandpa and sitting on the couch. Seto and Kaiba immediately stop their dual. "Where is he now?" Kaiba asked as his cold, calculating eyes glared at Mahad. "Jail," Isis answered, unsure why he wanted to know. He jumped onto his laptop and started sending an email.

"Atem, I am surprised at you," Aknamkanon chuckled at his son. They all look between the father and son. "Father?" Atem said, knowing what his father was getting at. "I would think you would have given that creep a one-way ticket to the shadow realm for even laying one finger on that young lady," Aknamkanon said, smiling at his son, secretly knowing Atem's feelings for Yugi. Everyone agreed with Aknamkanon's assessment. Atem crossed his arms and lean against the wall. "Two things. 1) if I had access to the shadow realm, I would have, and 2) Yugi would have stopped me. She insisted on turning him over to the police, which turns out he has warrants for arrest." He said. "Her heart is too light for the shadow realm. She is such a sweetheart." Isis said, admiring Yugi's soft and warm soul. "Just like your mother, Atem." Aknamkanon stated remembing his late wife. "Queen Aurora was gently and fair. She gave everyone an equal chance. She didn't care if you were a peasant or noble. It was all the same to her." He said. "don't forget, she still could be fierce when the occasion calls for it. Especially when it involved the children of Egypt." Atem said with a smile as he remembered how caring his mother was. She fought for several grants for the nearby orphanages.

Kaiba closed his laptop and cleared his throat. "Regarding Raptor, ill make sure either he stays in jail, or he stays far away from Yugi," he said. "Thank you, Kaiba. I am glad Yugi has a friend like you. All of you." Grandpa moto said, slightly mad at what happened to his granddaughter. He wanted her to be safe and happy.

Suddenly there was a loud thud from the floor above them, followed by a "hiya." It made everyone look up. "I'll go and check on Yugi." Tea said, heading up the stairs. As she followed Tea up the stairs, "I'll go with you. I want to ensure I didn't miss anything while healing her." as she followed Tea up the stairs. "Thank you, Isis," Atem said, nodding and looking up at the ceiling. After Tea and Isis left, Joey had a light bulb thought. "Hey Atem, not to be rude, but how will we explain everything? It's not like you can appear out of thin air." He asked. "I believe Kaiba has that taking care of for us. Am I right, Kaiba?" Atem said looking at Kaiba. "Yes. For Seto and Isis, it was easy. I changed mine and Ishizu's birth certificates to show both of us being twins. Seto will be my twin brother while Isis is Ishizu's. I did have to change his name to Seth Kaiba, which saying wasn't a problem, am I right?" Seto looked at Seth, who shook his head in said it not. "I was also able to show Isis's certification as a doctor," Seto said. "Seth will be working with me and Mokuba at Kaibacorp. I could use the help, and a fresh pair of eyes couldn't hurt." He continued.

"Atem was a little difficult. Originality I was going to make him Yugi's older brother, but he has informed me that would not work due to personal reasons. So instead, with the help of Mokuba, I learned there was a king of games several years ago from a remote island in South America who never left his island. Most people believe he is a myth." Seto said. "So I just assume his identity," Atem said.

Seto nodded before continuing. "Lucky for us, no one knows what he looks like." He said as Mokuba chuckled. "Big brother and I have concocted this story that the king of games there has moved here with his father to dual the Qu-king of games." Mokuba said nervously after his slip up. Both Joey and Tristen tense up to see Atem raise an eyebrow. They didn't want to betray Yugi's trust.

"You were going to say, Queen of games, weren't you? I already knew Yugi was a girl. I have known since dualist kingdom." Atem said. "How did you find out?" Tristen said, shocked at this revelation. "One night, Yugi had taken a shower and didn't realize I was in the room, spirit form, mind you. When she removes her towel, I notice a lack of genitals between her legs. I immediately turn around, for it's not polite to stare at a women naked body without her permission, being wed to her, or if you are a doctor. My father raised a gentleman." He said. Aknamkanon knew that was a lie but also knew Atem had his reasons. "it's nice to see some of my teachings made it through that thick skull of yours." He said.

Meanwhile, Tea and Isis found Yugi under a mountain of just bought clothes. "I told you we bought too much," Yugi said when she saw Tea. She and Isis help dig Yugi out of the clothes. That was when Yugi realized that Isis was in the room. She immediately covers her chest with her towel. "You won't say anything to Atem, please." She begged. Isis took Yugi's hands into her own. "Yugi, I already know. I was the one who found your treatment and sent it to Dr. Miyazaki." She said.

Yugi looked at her with wide eyes, worrying about Atem. "When Atem first came to the afterlife, he asked if there was a way to keep an eye on you. Even though I didn't tell him, there was a pool that we could use to look at the world of the living. I use it to see your past, mostly to learn about this wonderful soul who helped my pharaoh." She said. Yugi blushed at that comment. "By Using your past and what I remember about herbs, I was able to come up with your treatment. I was able to send it to your doctor using shadow magic I could access in the afterlife." Isis explained, pushing her hair back.

Tea found Yugi's favorite oversize night shirt and Capri pajama pants and handed them to her. Yugi changed and sat on the bed with Tea behind her, brushing out her almost dry hair. Isis sat in front of them, checking Yugi's neck. "I keep thinking this is just a dream, and when I wake up, he will be gone," Yugi said with a small tear running down her cheek. She tried to wipe the tear away, but Isis stopped her. "Yugi, be honest. How do you feel about Atem?" Isis asked. Yugi brought her knees up to her chin. "he's my best friend, no offense, Tea," she said. Tea nodded and encouraged her to keep going. "He was the other half of my soul, and when he left, I felt like I was in a cold dark place. I couldn't breathe." She said more tears flowed down her cheeks.

Isis looks at Tea, who smiles sadly and knows Yugi needs to get it out. She kept in for too long. "I thought that dueling and defeating him proved that I didn't need him anymore. I could set him free. But I felt like I need him more than ever." Yugi broke into sobs. Tea wrapped her arms around her, pulling her to her chest. "it's hard to be a girl, isn't it" she said, trying to lighten the mood. Slowly Yugi's sobs stop to sniffles. Tea lay her down on her bed and tucked her in. "I love him. I don't want to lose him again," Yugi said as she fell asleep. Isis took a tissue from the desk and wiped Yugi's face.

Yugi's deck, which was also on the desk, glowed, and Kuriboh popped out. He floated up to the bed and snuggled in next to her. Yugi subconsciously wrapped her arms around Kuriboh. "You will stay with her tonight?" Isis asked, not understanding why he was there. Kuriboh cood as he nodded. Tea motioned Isis to follow her, turn out the lights, and close the door. "She has been trying to be strong for too long, I guess." She said sadly. Isis put a hand on Tea's shoulder. "Having Atem back should help. He will have to reassure her he won't ever leave." She spoke. Tea looked at her questionably. "Won't he? He won't have to go back to the afterlife." She asked, not wanting to see Yugi more upset. "No Tea. When the Gods told him he could come back, they told him they don't want to see if in the afterlife until after he is a winkle old man with many grandkids, maybe even great grandkids." Isis Joke. The Gods use other words, but it was the same thing. Tea giggled at the thought of Atem and Yugi as old grandparents surrounded by kids. They continued back down the stair to rejoin the others.

Atem was the first to notice the girls had returned. "Is Yugi alright?" he asked. "Physically, she will be fine. Emotionally unsure. She has been holding a lot in; this event was the final straw that broke the Nile River. She needs rest. Kuriboh is with her." Isis said, giving him a small smile. Tea was shocked that Isis would revile Yugi's secret after Yugi asked her not to. Joey noticed Tea's expression. "They already know Tea. They have known for a while," he said. Tea nodded but was still shocked. "I believe we all need some sleep. We will continue this discussion in the morning." Grandpa said.

They all agree and head to their rides except for Atem and his father. Seth got in the limo with Seto and Mokuba and headed for the Kaiba mansion. At the same time, the Ishtars got into the SUV. While Mahad, Isis, and Mana climb into Mahad's mustang. They were heading for the Ishtar house. Grandpa showed Aknamkanon to the guest room down the hall from Yugi's room. Atem stopped and stared at Yugi's door before walking toward the Guest room with his father. Grandpa stopped him. "Atem, if you swear not to do anything to my granddaughter, you can sleep in her room." He said. Atem let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. "Thank you, Mr. Moto," Atem said, trying to be respectful. "None of the Mr. moto stuff. It's grandpa or gramps to you. I understand what it's like to lose someone. When I lost Yugi's grandmother, Nala, I would have given anything to have her back." Grandpa said. Atem nodded with understanding. "Good night, grandpa, father." Atem said as he slowly entered Yugi's room. Grandpa went to his room.

Atem quietly changed into his silk pajama pants and gently crawled into bed next to Yugi. "Thank you, Kuriboh." He whispered, patting Kuriboh. Kuriboh cood lightly and snuggled closer to Yugi. Atem places a small kiss on Yugi's cheek, which subconsciously cause her to smile. "Good night Yugi, my princess." He said. Atem fell asleep a short time later.
