Chapter 6: Yugi's recuse and Mia's memories.
Atem and the gang went to Seto's airplane hangar. "We have redesigned the blimp we originally took to the island. It should get us there in 3-4 hours instead of a whole day." Seto said as they entered the hangar. They all climb into the aircraft. Atem had called grandpa and his father to inform them what was happening. After getting chewed out for let Yugi get kidnapped, Grandpa told Atem not to come home without Yugi. Of course, Atem had no intention to return without Yugi. Once they were all on board, Seto told Roland to take off and step on it.
"I thought the explosion destroyed the island." Tea said look at Seto. "The tower was but not the island. Mokuba and I were trying to decide what to do with it." He said as he looked over at Atem, staring out the window. "Yugi will be fine," Seto said, getting Atem's attention. "We have seen her in trial after trial and still ended on top." He spoke. Atem knew Seto was right. Yugi was the strongest person he knew. He once told her that she could have been a pharaoh in ancient Egypt even though she was a girl, and he still believes that.
"She's tough. She even beat death." Joey said with his arms behind his head. Everyone except Tea and Tristen looked at him. "What do you mean?" Mahad asked. "A little over a month ago, at the start of her treatment to open her puberty glands, she almost died," he said. "The doctors said it was due to her body rejecting the treatment. Her whole body started shutting down." Tristen said, trying to stop himself from tearing up. "What happened?" Marik asked. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. "At one point, her heart had stopped. They tried everything to resuscitate her but couldn't." Tea said, starting to cry at the memory. All three of them were shaking. They would never forget the words they heard that day. "Time of death 10:55 am. For five painful minutes, we lost her." Tristen said, putting his head in his hands. "if she died, how is she still here?" Mana asked with tears in her eyes. She wasn't the only one. Everyone was tearing up at the thought of losing Yugi, even Seto.
Joey had to take a deep breath before answering. "That is what we are still not understanding. It felt like in those five minutes, time stopped. Everyone and everything around Yugi's body had disappeared. Suddenly there were three orbs of light around her. We could tell they were people but couldn't see who they were. We know they were helping her. They brought her back to us. We thought one of them was you, Atem, because when she opened her eyes, she said one word." He said, wiping his eyes. "Which was what?" Atem asked. "Yami. That's what she said." Tea said, also wiping her eyes. "We ask her later why she said that, and she said she found herself at that door to the afterlife. It opens, and you walk out in your pharaoh outfit in her words, in amazing glory. You had yelled at her, asking why she was there, and she claimed your words to get her cute little ass back to her body. it wasn't her time." Tea said with a smile.
Everyone chuckled at this while Atem was blushing and confused. 'I don't remember Yugi coming to the afterlife." He said. Isis placed a hand on his shoulder. "I have a theory. You told us about your powerful bond with young Yugi, right?" She said. Atem nodded, wondering what she was getting at. "It's quite possible that when you came to the afterlife, a part of you stayed with Yugi," she said. Atem nodded with understanding. After the ceremonial duel, he didn't want to leave Yugi, for he already knew he had strong feelings for her even then. He could have left part of himself with her. Roland came out of the cockpit. "Mr. Kaiba, we are approaching Kaibacorp Island." He said. Seto nodded. "We will figure out all that later after we get Yugi home." He said. Everyone agreed as they got ready for anything when they landed.
Yugi and Mia talked about the small stuff, such as their liking and disliking, when they heard a plane. "The Pharaoh is here," Mia said. Yugi smiled as Mia held his arm for her. she took it and, with his help, walked over just in time to see the plane land.
Tea was the first to see Yugi. "it's Yugi, but while is she clinging to Dark Marik?" she said as Seto opened the door. "let's find out." Atem said as he led them out of the plane.
Yugi could feel Mia tense up. She patted his arm in reassurance. "Let me talk to him," she said with a smile. Mia nodded and grabbed a pole from a nearby pile. "I forgot to say thanking you for taking care of me." She said. "and thank you for listening, Yugi." Mia said, returning the smile. Yugi limped over, and they started to run to her. Atem got to her first. "Yugi, are you alright? He didn't hurt you?" Atem said, noticing the limp and slightly burses. Yugi wrapped her arms around his neck. "I am fine." She said. Isis saw the wrap brace on her ankle. "what happened to your ankle?" she asked. Yugi placed most of her weight on her good foot and the pole Mia had given her. "the thugs who kidnapped me got a little rough. Mia wasn't happy when he found out. He took care of me." She said. Everyone looked at her, confused. 'Mia?' they all thought.
Yugi turned her attention to Atem. "Atem, I would like to ask a favor of you." She said. "anything, Aibou." Atem said, not sure what she wanted. "Please dual Mia. Something is different in him. He wants to know if it was a fluke, you won last time because he wasn't in the right frame of mind. Please for me. Dual him." She asked. Everyone was shocked to hear her question. Atem stared into her eyes, trying to find any form of mind control but found none. "very well for you, my princess." He said, giving her a short kiss on her lips. Yugi turned and smiled at Mia with a thump up. Mia let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. "Marik, I will dual you. It's time to duel." Atem said as he placed a duel disk on his wrist. Mia put one on his wrist as well. They both started with a 4k life point. Even Atem could see that Mia was nervous as hell. Usually, he would be ruthless in a dual, but with how Mia acted, he wasn't sure. Yugi was right something was different.
Atem started by summoning Gazella, the king of mythical beasts and berformet, and used polymerization to combine them to form chimera, the flying mythical beast (attack 2100 defense 1800) and play a sword of revealing light trap card face down.
Mia started with Helios, the Pegasus rider and winged Pegasus of dreams and used polymerization to form the dream protector. (Attack 2000 and defense 2300) and place shield and sword face down.
Atem played giant trunade to return Mia's trap card to his hand before attacking his dream protector with his chimera.
Mia's life points drop to 3900.
Mia played midget goblin (attack 1800 and defense 2200) in defense mode while also playing a spell called goblin strength which raised the attack point of midget goblin to 2500. He attacked chimera, and when Atem activated his swords of revealing light trap card, he started his spell card de-spell, which canceled out Atem's trap card. The attack continued.
Atem's life points drop to 3600
Atem played the Kuriboh brothers (attack 500 defense 300) and had them merge to form kuribaylon (attack 1500 defense 1000) and play horn of the unicorn to raise its attach points to 2200. He also played graceful dice and skull dice. He was taking a play out of Joey's playbook.
He rolled graceful dice first. He rolled a five, so kuribaylon gains 500 additional attack points, bringing the total up to 2700.
He rolled the skull dice next. he rolled a six, so Mia's midget goblin loses 600 attack points, bringing it down to 1900. He attacked with his kuribaylon.
Mia's life point dropped to 3100.
Mia felt himself getting angry and trying to fight it down. He began to shake. Yugi saw this. "MIA" she yelled. Mia looked at her. "Just breath," Yugi said as she demonstrated. Mia took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He smiled at Yugi in thanks. "Why is Marik acting like Yugi did when someone forced her to either end the dual or kill them in the duelist kingdom," Tea said, glaring at Seto, who refused to look at her. "Mia feels lost. After he was sent to the shadow realm, his mind began to clear. He doesn't know who he truly is. Is he just Marik's dark side or someone else?" Yugi explained as Isis healed her ankle.
Mia pulled a card from his deck and was shocked at what it was. It was a monster card called Ra's Daughter. Usually, he would play this card with the winged dragon of Ra. Mia knew the card could also be played on its own. But just like the Gods card, he needs to sacrifice three monsters. Then Dark Marik saw mind control was in his hand as well. He has a plan.
Mia first played mind control to take control of kuribaylon, then used depolymerization to de-fusion them into the five Kuriboh brothers. Then he sacrificed three of them and played Ra's daughter in attack mode. Ra's daughter was a young girl with sandy blonde hair and gold eyes wearing a two-piece gold dress with gold ankle bracelets. she also had wings like the winged dragon of Ra. (attack 3500 defense 2500) this card's unique ability allows her to attack immediately by forcing her opponent to send up to five cards to the graveyard.
Atem's life points fall to 100.
Atem smiled as he played Dark magic curtain and summand Dark sage(attack 2800 defense 3200), which he was forced to send to the graveyard by Mia's monster and also play emergency provisions.
Atem's life points rise to 1100
Atem also played two magic cards. First, the card Mia was forced to return to her hand. Shield and sword switch the attach points of their monster, so now Dark Sage has 3200 attack points, and Ra's daughter has 2500. The second card was called reroll the die. This card rolls a dice, and whatever it lands on Atem's Dark sage attack points gets multiplied by 1000, but he must give 1000 life points.
Atem's life point drop back to 100
He rolls a six, so his dark sage gets an additional 6000 points, bringing his attack points up to 9200.
He attaches Mia's monster
Mia's life points drop to zero. Ending the game.
Mia fell to his knee. "Thank you for the dual, my pharaoh." He said as he stood up and bowed slightly. "I am not sure that woman who looks like Ishizu is doing, but I know Yugi will need a doctor to look at her ankle." He said as he started to walk away. Yugi began to limp after him. Isis decreased the pain, but it was still a sprain. "Mia, you could come with us. You still haven't told me about those memories you seem to have. Maybe I can help you. We help Atem with his." She said to him.
Everyone couldn't believe what was coming out of her mouth. This was Dark Marik, He sent people to the shadow realm for fun, and she wanted to bring him home like some lost puppy. "Besides, it's getting late. It wouldn't be wise to travel at night." She said to him. Seto knew she was right. They got lost the last time he tried to travel by plane at night. It was better to rest and leave at sunrise. "We will stay here tonight." He said, snapping his fingers and his men brought out tents and sleeping bags.
After their camp was set up, they sat around a massive roaring fire. Yugi and Mia were chatting about anything. Everyone was watching intensely and concerned. Each thought Marik, or Mia as Yugi called him, would turn on them instantly. It got too much for Joey. To see the man who sent his girlfriend to the shadow realm and his best friend chatting away as old friends got under his skin. "ill asks what we all want to know." He said, jumping up and staring at Mia. "What the hell? It's like you are a different person from last time. In case you forgot. You sent both my girlfriend Mai and Ryou to the Shadow Realm, and I don't believe you can be forgiven for that." He said in anger. Yugi glared at Joey. "Joesph Wheeler!" she started to chew him out, but a hand on hers stopped her. "no, Yugi, he's right." Mia said, standing up to meet Joey face to face. "you have every right to be angry with me. I did do those things. Do I know why? I won't waste my breath giving an excuse because I don't have one. I know I am extremely sorry for what I have done. I am prepared to live out my existence on this lonely island without anyone to call friends or family. If that would please you and the world." He said.
Atem looked at Yugi, who was staring a comprehensive eye at Mia. 'I think Yugi might have an objection to that plan.' He thought. For a second, he notices Yugi's eyes flash red again. 'Something is going on with Yugi, something she might not even know. I will have to keep an eye on her. it could have something to do with her having my power now.' Atem thought.
Marik stood up and walked over to Mia. "You mention memories that seem to be from before us. What do you mean?" he said. Mia looked at Marik, shaking slightly. Yugi reaches up and grasps his hand, trying to give him some encouragement. He took a deep breath, for he knew this would be rough. "The earlier ones are more like feelings of happiness, contentment, distraught, emotional pain as if I lost someone close to me. After that, the memories are to get clear. I think I am more than just your dark side. I believe I live with my own body 5k years ago in Egypt. I remember hearing that Pharaoh Atem had just died saving up from Zorc. There were so many parties to celebrate his defeat and Atem's life." Mia said. "that is normal for a royal who dies to have parties thrown in their honor. I think it's now part of the funeral of today. To celebrate the loved one life." Ishizu said when she saw confused faces.
Mia nodded before setting back down next to Yugi, who kept a grip on his hand. "The first full memory I have is being summoned to the palace by the new Pharaoh Seto." Everyone looked at Seth, who himself looked shocked, and back to Mia. "He told me that Atem will return one day, and Atem's tomb must be protected. He told me that a family was chosen to protect that tomb. The Ishtar family." He looked at the Ishtars, who looked at him in shock. They knew they were chosen but didn't know they went back to Pharaoh Seto. "why did I summon you to the palace? I remember summoning someone, but I can't remember who or why." Seth asked. "I was told I was chosen to be the family protector. I was to ensure they were happy, safe, and alive. I was given the longevity to complete my task. I was to live a very long time and stay young until I found a successor to replace me when the time was right, which never happened. I lived for 3k years. During that time, I did my job. I protected the Ishtar family. They did not live underground; they lived in the sun with other people." Mia explain.
The Ishtars were shocked to hear that. The Ishtars thought the family had always lived underground, in the shadows. "when did we move underground?" Marik asked. Mia stared into the fire, tears building in his eyes. "After a raid. I have no idea who they were, but they came for the tomb. The invaders killed women, children, and men. It made no difference to them—thousand of lives were destroyed in a split second. I was trying to save a little girl who was about to be crushed by a falling wall when I was stabbed in the gut. I still remember her face scary, crying for her mommy. I couldn't save her." he started to shake. Yugi wrapped her arms around him while he let it out. He cried on her shoulder. No one said anything for a long time.
After a bit, Mia got his tears under control. "anyway, I woke hours later with bandages around my waist. I was in one of our first aid tents. I heard the elders saying they knew I wouldn't be to keep them safe one day. That day they chose to move the entire convey underground away from the sun. I tried to yell out but was too weak from my injury to say anything. I was dying and couldn't even find my replacement the whole time. I was thinking about who would watch over them after I was gone. I felt my soul leave my body. I close my eyes and pray to the Gods to let the family be safe. When I opened my eye again, I saw some women preparing my body for burial." He said. Atem knew what had happened. "you became a spirit. Your desire to protect made it impossible to leave." He said. Mia nodded.
"For years, I tried to get someone to realize I was there, but no one could see or hear me. I could watch as the one thing I feared most happened to the family I was ordered to protect." He said. "what," Yugi said, rubbing his back. "corruption. Every year I saw more and more greed and corruption enter the family. They started arguing more, and eventually, they turned violent. They start killing each other. Soon the family that was once large dwindled to two. Gabriel and Natasha Ishtar." Mia said, staring at the Ishtar siblings. "our parents," Ishizu said. Mia nodded.
'Gabriel was just as corrupted as the rest, but Natasha, she was a sweetheart. She never said anything bad about anyone. She helped out whenever she could. I have never met a more pure soul. That is before Yugi." Mia said, smiling at Yugi, who blushed.
"Pharaoh, do me a favor. Don't ever let her go. You will never know when Anubis will take her." He said, locking eyes with Atem, who nodded. Yugi smiled as she looked over at the man she loved. She sent her feelings of love over their bond, and he sent his feeling back, comforting each other.
"Anyway. It was calm for a couple of years until Gabriel started complaining about not having children. Now I didn't want him to have children. I didn't want more innocent souls to be corrupted. Natasha wanted children as well. I didn't know what to do. One night I hear a commotion on the surface. So, I went to see what was going on. It turns out it was a convey being attacked by pirates. I was them killing both the men and women. I knew I couldn't do anything, but something was pulling me toward them. After a while, the pirates had their full and left. I floated down to see if there were any survivors. I found a mother and her babe. The mother was gravely injured and wasn't going to make it. I don't know how she did, but she saw me. She held her baby up to me, begging me to save it. I could pick up the babe and help him close when I reached out. Somehow I was able to keep him despite being a spirit." She said.
Mia stared straight at Odion for the next part. "I told the mother I would try, and she left this world. Now I had a baby that I couldn't care for due to being a spirit, but then I remembered Natasha, and she wanted children. I pray to Ra that I am doing the right thing now. I took the child to the opening where I knew she was, and I gently coaxed the baby to cry. The sound traveled down to Natasha. Now want to take a guess who that baby was." He said.
Odion didn't say a word but pointed to himself. Mia Nodded. "yes, Odion, it was you. I watched you grow, and the three of you were happy for a time. But it was not to last. Gabriel started talking about having a son to carry the tomb keeper legacy. I screamed at him that he had Odion to stop, but he couldn't hear me. I think Natasha did. She repeated my words only quieter. I thought Gabriel would have agreed to give you the intention, but it was not meant to be. Soon after, Ishizu was born, and Gabriel kept going about needing a boy. He made me so mad, but then I looked at Natasha. I knew something wasn't right. I knew she would not survive another pregnancy. I beg Gabriel, even though I knew he couldn't hear me, not to get her pregnant, but it happened anyway." He said, shaking his head. "The moment Marik was born, Gabriel forgot all about Natasha. The only ones who cared for her besides me were Odion and Ishizu. When she dies shortly after giving birth, I want to take all three of you and run, but I knew I couldn't; I was just a spirit." Mia said, making a fist in anger which Yugi rubbed until he released it.
"Over the next few years, I kept watching over the children in my little way. I would have never guessed what would happen next." Mia said, almost terrified to continue. "Anytime Marik got hurt, or in trouble, I would be the one who was punished. When a snake bit Marik, Gabriel first physically hit me. Before then, it was just a verb lashing." Odion picked up the story, knowing they needed to hear his part, the part he never told anyone. "that day I was going to hurt Marik, kill him. I had the blade in my hand, ready to strike, but something stopped me." He said, looking down. Marik came over, kneeled in front of him while Ishizu sat next to him, taking his hand in hers. "what was it?" Marik asked, forcing Odion to look at him. He was crying. "You. You had said you were sorry big brother, and I realize I couldn't do it. I promised your mother I would look out for you, the both of you, and I was going to keep." Odion allowed his tears to fall, relieved to get that secret off his chest. Both Marik and Ishizu hug their big brother.
Mia smiled at this. "After that, I knew I had to find a way to get you three out. Over the next two or three years, I keep trying to get your father to forget about the intention or at least let Odion do it. But he was too corrupted to be influenced. The day Marik received the intention, in the last-ditch effort to save all of you, I put the ritual of protection, the same ritual I went through to become the protector of the Ishtar family, in Odion's mind. The markings you bear, Odion, I used to wear them on my shoulder, I got them when I was chosen to be the guardian for the family, but they are gone now. I thought if I gave you some of my power, you could get your brother and sister out. During the intention, I hear Marik's screams, and I snap. Somehow, I had merged with Marik, and his anger became my own. I started to hate the pharaoh, thinking he was the cause of all our pain and suffering. My mind blurred, and the next thing I know, I became Dark Marik." Mia concluded.
After Mia's tale, no one could speak. No one knew what to say. Yugi was the first to talk. "let's discuss in the morning. We need to let the dust settle." She said. They all agreed and went to their tents. Atem came over to help Yugi. "ill be there in a bit." She looked at Mia, who was still shaking a bit. "if you're sure. I love you, Aibou." He said, leaning down to kiss her. "I love you too, my Yami." She said. Mia watched as Atem walked to his tent. "You really should get some sleep." He said. "Later, come here." She said as she gently forced Mia's head onto her lap. Yugi ran her fingers through his hair. "if anyone needs sleep, it's you. You have been through a lot, and I don't think you have ever been able to talk about it before. That was emotionally draining for you." She said as she massaged his scalp. Within a second, Mia was fast asleep, breathing deeply.
"Yugi," someone said. She looked up to see Marik, Odion, and Ishizu staring at her. Marik kneeled in front of her. "do you think we can trust him?" he asked. Yugi sigh. "Marik, you told me you felt a warm, welcoming presence earlier. What do you feel now?" she said. Marik started at Mia. Something inside him told Marik to trust Mia and his heart. He gently moved some of Mia's bangs out of his face. "the same thing, only stronger. Mia was always the presence. We just lost our way." He said.
Yugi smiled at all three of them. "now you can heal. The past is the past. Learn from it and move on." She said, "and for the record. I don't know how but I know he is telling the truth." She added. "good night, Yugi," they said, feeling lighter for some reason. "night," she said after a couple of minutes. Yugi gently moved Mia's head onto a pillow and wrapped a blanket around her. She limped over to the tent she was sharing with Atem. Atem heard her come in. "is everything alright?" he asked as he gently pulled her down into the blanket. "it will be." She said as she kissed him, snuggled into him, and went to sleep, followed by Atem a second later.
A few hours later, Yugi awoke to a dark feeling around her. Atem woke and saw Yugi looking around. "Yugi what ….." He was cut off by Yugi placing a finger on his lips and then on her ears. He stayed silent and listened. Suddenly he heard what sounded like chanting. They climb out of the tent to find Mia holding a pole, ready to fight. "we need to get out of here now. Somehow this place was cursed. There are dark spirits who roam around. They only come out when there is no light. And tonight is a new moon, so no light." He said. Suddenly he was attacked by a shadow creature. It had long, sharp claws and large teeth. Mia uses the pole to fight back.
Within a second, everyone was surrounded. Yugi tried to summon as many dual monsters as possible, but she could only summon Kuriboh, Dark Magician, and Dark Magician Girl. She uses them to help her friends. Mia heard a scream and saw Marik, Ishizu, and Odion about to be eaten by several shadow creatures. "No, I will not let you hurt them. I am still duty-bound to protect the Ishtar family. LEAVE THEM ALONE." He screams.
Suddenly Marik's back started to glow, and something shot off of it and hit Mia. he began to glow and took the shape of the Egyptian god, the winged dragon of Ra. He held his hands up over his head. "BLAZE CANNON" he yelled as the fire shot out of his hands, pushing all the shadow creatures back, even destroying a few. As the shadow started to run away, the sun came up. Mia fell to the ground with a thud. Yugi ran over to him. She notices that his body has changed into that of a female. "Yugi, look up" Atem yelled.
Everyone looks up to see the Winged Dragon of Ra above them. "I have returned her to her original body. She is now allowed to live her own life as Mia Rei. Whatever she wishes it to be. Fare thee well," The god said before disappearing. Mia slowly opened her eyes. "What hit me?" she said, holding her head. Everyone got a good look at Mia. She was now a full Female wearing a black tank top and brown cargo pants with matching ballerina shoes. "I told you that you could come with us." Yugi smiled, and she helped Mia up. Marik ran over to help, and Yugi was still slightly injured with her ankle. They climb into the plane, and Seto informs Roland to take off and head for home.
