Blazepanzer here...lol: I...ah...kinda made a mistake on the old chapter, two actually. First...yeah...for a while I was considering finishing up each story before publishing... A very good policy, but I had ultimately decided against that two weeks ago and forgot to remove that from the A:N...Sorry!
Secondly, and most embarrassingly...I've been spelling Taeko's name wrong this whole time...sorry bout that! I'm especially disappointing in myself over that one because Taeko is my favorite Girls und Panzer character and the least I could do is spell her name right! Although that's kinda odd to say when I'm writing a fanfic about her going to prison... ah well. Anyways, I'm going to be slowly correcting the mistake over the next week or two in my other fanfics.
Other than that, enjoy! Note: Blazepanzer does not own Girls und Panzer!
Taeko's amber eyes adjusted to the weak morning light flooding through the window. She rose, and for the first time analyzed her cell.
It was pretty bare-bones, with cream-colored plaster on the walls, a barred window overlooking one of the exercise yards, and the door of course, which was a simple yet heavy wooden door with a bar window about thirty centimeters long and forty-five centimeters wide.
Amenities were also sparse, there was a small bookshelf haphazardly containing about three dozen books. Her only source of entertainment beside the window and whatever activities were planned for the day, apparently. Then there was her futon she slept on, nothing too fancy, just a slightly raised mattress with a built on pillow. The cover-sheet was bolted on and to Taeko's disgust it looked rather dirty. Not that she had a choice.
There also was a camera trained on her, which caused her to sigh. "No privacy," she hissed disappointingly. The only other thing was a toilet with a sink on the top, and a hair brush, toothbrush and a small packet of baking soda. Yeah, they fully expected you to use baking soda, not true toothpaste.
There was a brick wall going all the way up to the ceiling of the room. This brick wall would protect you from the view of those looking through the glass window from outside.
It will not protect you from the camera nor the window looking in from the hall.
Feeling the urge, Taeko jumped out of her jumpsuit and quietly relieved herself, flinching as the water squirted across her buttocks. Never really used one of these toilets before, she muttered as she slipped her prison garb back on, washing her hands before brushing her teeth. The baking soda made her want to gag, but she forced herself too use it. That boy's words echoed in her mind as she did so.
Sure, prison life was awful and sure, Taeko had been disowned, which broke the young teen's heart. However, she wasn't going to just lie down and die. She'd serve her sentence, whatever it may be and enjoy whatever life she had left.
Or...so she had initially thought. The more she watched the outside world, the more she realized that she was missing things on the outside, and the more lonely she began to feel. I'll never get to play volleyball again! She wailed inwardly. I won't be allowed into the professional leagues at any rate...then again given Ooarai's lack of a volleyball club to begin with, that was unlikely.
She then let out a sigh. It's not just me. Aoi won't be able to play with her online friends, Erwin won't be able to have historical conversations with the Hippos, and the Rabbits won't be able to have any movie nights. What a waste we turned out to be!
Her mind once again flooded back to the ginger haired girl who had tried to warn them. Hanoashi...I wonder what things would be like if she was in charge, Taeko mused silently. I...I wonder what she was like. If...maybe...just maybe she and I could have been friends...Maybe we could have convinced her to join our club and reestablish it...we certainly wouldn't be in this mess.
The cell door opened. "Taeko Kondou, it's time for breakfast!"
"Yes sir!" she rose, bowing toward the guard as she exited the cell. She repeated the steps she had yesterday, taking her number, sitting at her assigned table, and waiting for the others to arrive.
She noticed two things as she waited. First was that the boys and the girls wore different uniforms. The girls had a bright yellow jumpsuit where as the guys had a bright orange jumpsuit. The second was that the girl's sleeves went about half way between their shoulders and elbows where as the guys went all the way to the elbows.
This time she was sat next to three people she didn't know, all boys. Taeko ate her food in silence, not really sure how to go about this since it had been a while since she had to deal with boys all by herself, andthe fact that they were now in juvenile prison was making her a nervous wreak.
"Hey, have any of you heard about Hanoashi Katoni? I was a big fan of her back when she commanded Nishmari." one of the boys asked.
"Only thing I know is that there's a warrant out for her arrest," the guy next to Taeko admitted.
"What do you mean there's a warrant for her arrest?" Taeko asked quietly, stunned by this news.
"So you can speak...I was afraid you were deaf!" The guy diagonal across from her gasped jokingly.
"Um...yeah...so what about Hanoashi? How can they're be a warrant for her arrest?" Takio asked, ignoring him.
"Yeah, what gives? From what I've heard she was quiet the responsible commander..."
"Supposedly she struck Ooarai's instructor...they've got her on assault charges so to speak..." the guy in the know sighed. "Shame too, she's quite the cutie..."
Taeko sighed and relayed what she knew. "But as far as her assaulting the instructor, I can't really say. She just walked off and I never saw her after that."
"Damn, that's gotta be pretty tough," they mused.
"Are you going to be okay?" one of them asked after a bit. "I mean it's been a rough few days for you."
Taeko nodded. "I'll muddle through somehow."
Days passed. As it turned out Taeko had been assigned to laundry duty, which was hard considering she had to deal with running back and forth carrying heavy prison garb. And the garb was heavy, the jumpsuits were like five kilograms. They were designed to be heavy so that the prisoners couldn't run very far in them, and considering they didn't have any underwear, it made running even more uncomfortable.
Girl with large bust sizes such as Taeko, Aoi, and Hana found that they had a particular hard time with the uniforms.
Yet even so, dispute the difficulties, Taeko had enjoyed the laundry work. It took her mind off of jail, gave her a sense of purpose. Even if it was a rather smelly one.
Anyways, Taeko had just finished brushing her hair one morning when the door opened. "Your trial is today," the guard informed her.
Takio's heart sank. Are they going to let me go? No...mostly likely they are just going to lock me up somewhere and throw away the keys. I doubt they'll give me the death penalty. Her heart sank at the thought. I'm not ready to die! As much as I hate the idea of prison...
"Please place your hands on the wall...I know we don't normally have to cuff you, but this is transportation we're talking about," the guard noted, interrupting her thoughts.
Taeko sighed as she was chained, and then given a pair of rudimentary shoes. She hobbled along, the guard not taking his hands of her arm for even a brief moment until she got into the van.
"Normally we'd try you in Ooarai, but the situation is really volatile over there, so you're trial will he held in Nishmari, which is right next to Ooarai," the guard informed as he slammed the door.
The last time I was in here things were different, Taeko mused sorrowfully. Back then I had my teammates, and I wasn't in this dense prison uniform, plus we could manage to sort of take our shirts off. But now...I'm alone.
The ride to Nishmari was long, and not by any means an easy one for the teenage girl. All she could do was reflect on what was about to come, plan out any question she may be asked, and reminisce about the good old days before all of this mess happened.
Six and a half hours. That's about how long Taeko was alone with her thoughts, chained to the bed of the van. Her wrist hurt, she was hot and stuffy, and tired. Bored out of her mind in fact, not to mention fearful of her future. However, in that time she had made up her mind on how she was going to tackle things in the court.
She quickly found herself being lead into the courtroom, the air conditioning feeling like bliss. For a brief moment, Taeko was tempted to think she had entered heaven, but the metal rings clasped around her wrist kept her grounded in reality.
As she entered the court-room, she noticed that there wasn't too many people in the court. Mom and Dan aren't here...but then again why would they be? I died in their eyes. Maybe...it's for the best. If they do lock me up for life...what'd be the use of even keeping up with me?
Taeko Kondou, you have been charged with Accessory to Murder. How to you plead? The judge boomed.
She simply gazed at him evenly and answered, "Guilty, sir."
Taeko knew what she was doing. If he had said murder, she'd have explained that she had no intention or involvement in the actual murder. She had just been a radio operator along for the ride. Not guilty if you will.
But since she had been charged with accessory to murder, she couldn't refute that without regret. She wasn't going to spend an eternity dealing with trying to cover up the truth, especially when it was as plain as day.
Realizing he was waiting for her to continue, she nodded. "Your honor, when I was in the Type 89, I realized that what we were about to do was very dangerous. I...I tried to speak up, but Noriko, my commander, had shut me down. I..." Taeko sighed wearily. "I should have put my foot down more."
"You didn't know about the emergency knock out flag system?" The judge asked gently.
Taeko shook her head. "No, I had no idea that we could do something like that..." she trailed off. "On the first day our instructor arrived..." She went over what had happened, including the situation with Hanoashi's warning and Ami's email quip afterwards. "We should have listened to Hanoashi," Taeko finished sadly.
He gazed at her, pity in his eyes. "Taeko, I'm so sorry. I wish I could just let this whole situation go. You seem kind and you are a very beautiful young lady, and sending you to prison is the last thing I'd want to do. But as you said, you were warned that you were being too dangerous, and then months later you realized that your team was about to do something completely reckless and didn't do everything you knew you could to stop it. And now people are dead because you didn't do more.
Taeko closed her eyes as she waited for her sentence.
"Taeko Kondou, I hereby sentence you to two and a half years of Bad company, rank 2."
Takio's eyes opened wide. "What's bad company?" she gasped, surprised.
"Bad company is...well it's sort of a prison system if you will...but it's also a Sensado program as well. You join one of four academies offering the program, and partake in their practices and some of their official matches. Upon your release, your criminal record will be wiped clean.
Taeko was stunned. So not only am I going to be participating in Sensado again...but I'm getting a clean record out of the end of the sentence.
"Just remember Taeko," The judge warned. "If you mess this up, you'll be sent to a real prison, and given your crime, you'd spend decades behind bars."
Takio's heart sank. Decades? She pushed the unpleasant thoughts out of her mind. "I won't mess up sir!" she promised, determination filling her voice.
"Good, case dismissed!" the judge boomed.
Lead into a local jail, Taeko sighed as she realized she was in a simple room with a wooden bunk and a toilet/sink combo. At least I have toilet paper now she mused, clearly unimpressed. Personally, she felt like she could spend a half decade in the old juvenile prison and be satisfied at that mercy, but then again that was a juvenile prison. This was just some dingy county jail.
She gazed out of the window. I wonder how long I'm going to be in here? She wondered.
Hours turned into about three days as she woke up, ate the breakfast they slid in, and just exercised in the cell for the day. The guards would slide her a singular magazine each day in exchange for the previous day's magazine. However, she was surprised when the door outright opened one day, a guard gazing at her.
"Miss Kondou?" He called.
"Yes sir?" Taeko rose gently.
"We've received word that you're to head to the 444 th spare Sensado squadron at Blue division high school acadamy." he ordered. "Please lean across the wall so that we can shackle you."
Taeko did as asked, not too sure about this situation. "So um, what can you tell me about this Spare squadron?" she asked.
The guard just shrugged and said not much.
"We'll be heading to the Ikabari airport, since the civilian airport at Ooarai is too dangerous for you still," the guard informed as she was stuffed into the back seat of the police car.
"You mean it's still too dangerous for us Sensado members to be near Ooarai?" Taeko asked, surprised as the door shut.
The officer entered into the car. "Unfortunately, yes. Taeko, I don't know how much you know about the Student Council, but those three were very beloved by the students. Let's just say there's a very good reason why Anzu, Momo, and Yuzu were chosen during their freshman year. And the Sensado team members took their lives away. Maybe you girls really didn't mean to kill them. But killed they were by your hands, and Ooarai's students aren't having any of it.
Taeko then had a thought. "Isn't Ikabari Airport a military airport?"
The officer shrugged. "That's were you're headed. Don't care if it's civilian or military, that's your destination and it's my job to get you there."
After a bit of traveling Taeko let out a sighed.
"You alright back there miss?" the officer asked, his tone kind.
"Just not found of traveling long distances handcuffed." she admitted.
"Don't worry, it won't be too long," he encouraged.
As she expected, a teenage girl arriving on a military base in handcuffs caused quite a a bit of a sturr, even if they had been expecting her. To Takio's shame, many of them were booing her, which was not helping her in the slightest.
After a bit, they began to sing.
"Deception...Disgrace...
Guilty as plain as the cuffs on her wrist!
Murderer!
Betrayer!
She asked to murder the moment she tanked!
An outrage!
Jail her for life!"
They're singing a remix of the Lion King kind 2 He is not one of us! Taeko realized with a start. But...it's about me...is that how they really feel about us...about me?
"Born to kill
Raised to hate!
Helpless to defy her fate!
Let her rot, let her die
But do not forget what we cannot forgive!"
"Stop it! Stop it please!" Taeko begged, growing unable to stand it.
"And she is not, one of us!
She had never been one of us
She is not one of us
Not our kin
Some one once lied to us...
Now were not so kind..."
"No...please...stop it!" Taeko cried, erupting into sobbing. "Just stop it...please!" she wailed. The guard transporting her had to stop and let her cry for about a good five minutes before Taeko could gain her composure and continue. As she did, one of the soldiers cried out "Don't act like you don't deserve this you devil!"
Off to the side in the shade she met the eye of four pilots, all gazing at her in lust. One of them had a very prominent wedding band on his finger. Wonder if his wife knows he's lusting after a teen? Taeko thought in disgust. Just because I'm guilty of Accessory to murder doesn't mean I need to be your lust object!
Some ways away there was yet another group, including the officer of the base who seemed to be gazing at her in pity. Don't...I deserve this much for my part in the accident... Taeko whispered inwardly, feeling incredibly guilty at her role in the accident. But she didn't dare speak, It'd only give the jeering soldiers more ammunition to use against her.
She could just barely manage the handcuffs and prison part of her punishment. The jeering on top of it though...it was too much.
"Right, come this way," one of the guards ordered her, standing next to the plane. Taeko obeyed, her chains cackling as she made her way over. "Right, we'll cuff you behind your back now, as it's protocol. You are being held on a school ship after all," she added.
Taeko sighed as her hands were brought behind her back and latched. She hated handcuffs with every fiber of her body. How could Asuza stand being handcuffed by her brother, especially for eight minutes? Taeko mused as she was guided up the steps of the small transport plane.
The flight to the academy ship wasn't long, but it wasn't pleasant either. That stupid song! Taeko had thought through her sobs. Multiple times. Yeah, she ended up crying the whole trip, shrugging off the guard's offers to whip her tears.
By the time she had calmed down, the plane was in the process of landing. Everything to Taeko was a bit of a blur to her at that point, as she was too exhausted to comprehend what was happening to her. The only thing she remembered hearing that stupid song.
Bright light flooded through the cell as Takio's amber eyes opened slowly. She realized two things. First, she was in some sort of blue uniform with a matching green skirt. To her shock, her breast was showing and she thought at first she had torn her uniform until she saw the black haired girl sleeping next to her.
My cell mate? Taeko wondered as she carefully slid off of the bed, and gazed around. She noticed a small bookshelf to the right of the cell, holding about eighty books. To her right there was a toilet, no walls or anything. Two sinks with a hair brush, toothbrush, and actual toothpaste. Concrete walls separated the cell on three sides, however the forth wall consisted of a block of iron bars as well as the cell door.
She walked over, wrapping her hand experimentally around the bars. So this is what it's like to be behind bars, Taeko mused. At least this is only about two and a half years and not decades... she added in relief. Not that I'm happy about being here, but at least I know my place so far, she added.
"Fuentes flower! Fuentes flower! Black and yellow! Fuentes Fuentes!"
"Shut up bout the Fuentes flower!" one of the guards hissed as he passed Takio's cell.
Taeko first reaction was to flinch, thinking he was gazing at her before she realized he was ranting at her cellmate. Her second reaction a split moment later was to cover her breast, letting out a small yelp of protest.
"Get used to it young Missy, this is the school's uniform, minus the double strike. Course you were too tired to listed to anything last night." he huffed, gazing at her.
Taeko gazed back, her amber eyes growing with fear, but after a few moments she lowered her hands and arms. This...this is embarrassing, she blushed inwardly as he gazed at her for a brief moment.
"Doubt you were hiding anything, he chuckled as he moved on.
What does that mean? Taeko shrank, heading all the way back to the edge of her cell as though that's protect her. But there was no protection in this cell. Anyone in the hallway could see you no matter were you were.
At least these uniforms are more comfortable than the juvenile uniform, even if they are so exposed, Taeko realized.
"Fuentes flower...Fuentes flower!" Her cellmate began to sing.
Taeko just sighed. She must be brain dead. For a while Taeko just stared out of the cell, before sighing and slumping down on the floor, hugging her legs.
She did her best to ignore her cellmate's constant singing, but it did no good. The guard kept yelling at her, and yet her cellmate kept singing.
"Right, time for class to begin," One of the guards called out, and a female guard unlocked Takio's cell. "Please stand with your hands cupped across the bars.
Taeko rose and nodded, making her way over to the bar and entwining her fingers around it. To her surprise, the guard took out not a pair of handcuffs, but a ziptie.
"Alright, move next to her Taeko," she ordered.
She blinked in confusion, but obeyed. To her shock, the guard took her left wrist and her cellmate's right wrist and wired them together. "Makes you learn to cooperate."
"Are we going to see the Fuentes flower again?" The black haired girl asked.
"What do you mean again?" the guard rolled her eyes as she guided the two girls out of the cell.
The walk to the class room was...odd. For one, she had never been tied to another person before. A week ago she had never even been in handcuffs for that manner. However, being tied to someone was a whole different manner of annoyance, considering said person consciously tapped against Takio's fingers, and would sometimes try to intertwine with hers. She glanced at the guard who just shrugged as if to say tolerate it.
The classroom was even more odd. Just a projector, a guard, and a ton of wooden benches. "So um...how do we do work?" she asked.
"Whadda ya mean?" the guard chuckled. "You get a monthly test and that decides your average grade."
"That's it?" Taeko gasped.
"That's it." The guard nodded. "So make sure you pay attention!"
"There's not much people here," Taeko mused, gazing around as there was no one she recognized.
"Don't worry young Missy, ya Ooaraian's gave us bad company squadron's a lot of recruits, especially you're stupidity over using cell phones during matches."
"How's that bad?" Taeko gasped.
"Because it breaks the rules." the guard huffed. "The Sensado federation has announced it's charging all Ooarai radio operators as a rank two offense, and the criminal justice system is all to happy to use that as an excuse to jail you. Be glad you got sentence to a rank two before the order came out."
"What's so bad about a rank three?" Taeko asked.
"Ask your friend Akibe during practice," the guard chuckled. "She got luckily due to her tender age and got a five year sentence."
"But this is a high school academy, right?" Taeko asked. "How can she get five years?"
"It's time for the class to start." The guard ignored her. "Please go and take your seats."
Taeko and her cell mate did so, and for once Taeko was please that her cellmate was quiet. She was not so pleased that she was so touchy with her hand however, but she just let out a quiet sigh and resolved to do her best to tolerate it.
The documentaries and lectured droned on for hours, and Taeko believed her brain was turning to mush. She was by no means an idiot, and in face she had good grades relatively speaking, math being her weakest subject. However, these kinds of lectures bored her to death, even after sitting in a police van for hours on end over the past week.
After some hours the lights came on and the six prisoners were transported to the lunch room. Takio's hand was cuffed to the table, and a tray was placed in front of her.
"Waste nothing," the guard who sat the meal in front of her noted before moving on.
"Lunch begins, you have fifteen minutes!" another guard shouted.
Taeko dug in, eating the soup first. This isn't half bad...she noted, glancing around as she realized her fellow prisoners were eating some sort of bread-like cake first. She gazed at the cake on her plate, which looked more like a cross between a slice of beard and a bread cracker so to speak. She ginger picked it up, and took a bite, making a face as she did.
This is disgusting! She shouted inwardly. But even so, the bread filled her with energy, so much more than even the soup. She kept taking bites, making a face of disgust at the doughy texture each time. She was thankful she still had the juice from her soup to drink after she had finished eating the cake. She looked toward a guard, who nodded approvingly.
"I know the Cal-cake doesn't taste good, but it'll give you enough calories for the day," she noted. "You'll get another at supper. Breakfast however is only for PE and practice match days."
Taeko nodded, glancing back at her plate. So that was a Cal-cake huh? She mused. Taste awful.
Time passed once again, lectures, and then it happened. As they were finishing up, there was a knock on the door, and an officer walked in and whispered something to the guard, who turned off the lights.
To her surprise, Taeko was lifted up along with her cellmate, their wired hands de-latched, and then cuffed behind the hands. Taeko was then guided back to her cell, where as her cellmate was whisked away someplace else.
Sitting on the bed, Taeko let out a sigh of relief at her cellmate's departure. No more Fuentes flower song, no more touchy touchy. What a relief! Though I'd love to have some company...just not that kind of company!
"Taeko.." an elderly man walked up.
"Sir?" Taeko gasped, Rising up.
"Your cellmate was caught trying to plant a crack-pipe on your side of the bed, and thus she had been sent to an actual prison. You should consider yourself lucky we know you are innocent, as we have your alternate jail sentence written out and ready to go if you fail this program."
"May...I ask how long it is?" Taeko asked.
"32 years, with parole eligibility at age 32," He informed.
"So I'd have to spend at least 16 years in prison!" Taeko shuddered.
"Don't worry young miss, we know you're innocent in the manner, so you're okay for the moment. Actually, we like how you've been doing so far," he encouraged.
"Th...thanks," Taeko whispered.
"That being said, would you like a new cell-mate right away or would you prefer to stay along for a while."
"Alone sir...I...I'd kinda like to get a bit more settled in more before sharing a room again...if that's okay."
"Very well then young miss," he nodded, before walking off.
Taeko watched him go, scooting across to the side of her bed, clutching her knees to her chest and erupting into tears. I almost got sent to three decades in prison...and it wasn't even my fault!
