Living on a farm was simple. Sure, there was always a lot of work to do, yet this kind of activity didn't bother Historia too much. Moreso, she had several books that she had read a million times already. Other than that, there were very few other ways for her to kill boredom with.
Local kids didn't really like to play with her. Therefore, the young girl's only meaningful social interaction was with her mother. And this one didn't exactly count as nice and heart-warming. Historia could not recall any good memories of her mom. The only time that they had touched, the woman could only express her deep regret of bringing the young blonde to this world.
Historia was sitting peacefully on the field, pondering.
Her mother had left her long time ago. Sometimes she was wondering if she was even sad about it. Yet somehow, she never felt truly alone. Sure, there were times it was a little lonely, but every time she thought about it, she could fainty recall some weird, unknown feeling.
The feeling that she belonged somewhere.
"Hey…!"
There weren't that many people that would just shout at her in the middle of the field. The girl turned around to see who exactly was yelling.
A young woman with beautiful dark hair was running towards her.
"You're okay!" She exclaimed sobbingly as she swept Historia into a strong embrace.
Of course, how could the blonde forget? The person who filled the void in her life was her older sister Frieda. The very person who taught her how to read, how to behave properly, the very person who hadn't given up on her.
"Big sister" the girl asked with a surprise "what's going on?"
It was only then that she noticed how tired and troubled Frieda was looking. With bags under her eyes and her hair all messed up, her sister seemed like she's just went through a lot. The woman stood up and straightened her attire.
"From now on" she started as she looked at Historia with the most caring expression that the young girl had ever seen "I'll be coming here a lot more often. I will never leave you again…"
"Big sister…"
"We only have ourselves, Historia" Frieda exclaimed with a hint of sadness.
"Only?" The blonde asked with a slight disbelief "what do you mean…?"
The dark-haired female slumped to the ground with a sigh.
Silence filled the air as the blonde was desperately waiting for the answer. Finally, her older sister closed her eyes and spoke up.
"Our family has been murdered."
At first, Historia didn't know what to think. Even though she knew the tragedy had stricken her own relatives, the young girl never even got to meet them. However, it seemed that Frieda was hurting deeply, and the blonde couldn't just bear with it.
And so, Historia simply hugged Frieda's form.
The warm tears fell to the ground, as the two sisters were trying to comfort each other.
Later, they just decided to lay down on the nearby grass.
"We were praying in a chapel" Frieda finally said "praying for peace…"
"What chapel?" The younger sister asked.
The dark-haired female seemed to be thinking about the answer.
"There is a special chapel beyond wall Sina" Frieda explained "our family has been gathering there for generations…"
"What for?"
The older sister looked at her with a confused expression.
"We would pray in there."
No one ever really told Historia about the idea of praying. Going to a special location and saying some wishful sentences didn't seem too appealing to her. Seeing her confusion, Frieda suddenly understood what that was about.
"Oh" the older sister exclaimed "I guess I never taught you to pray."
Experiencing something for the first time was usually very exciting. Historia actually got anxious about this.
"First, you get on your knees" Frieda explained as she did the same.
"Why like this?"
"It's a sign of submission" the dark-haired female explained "you kneel down because you are not the most powerful and depend on others."
"And who is the most powerful?" Historia asked as she was kneeling.
The question made Frieda wonder.
"Maybe the god that created the walls…"
"But the titans have destroyed them!" Historia nervously interjected "I heard from people on the farm!"
The older sister closed her eyes.
"Don't worry about that" Frieda said in a weird tone "whatever happens, happens. You need to focus on what you want, right now…"
"Oh…" The blonde spoke as she looked on the ground "well, sometimes when you're gone, it does get pretty lonely…"
At that, the older sister opened her eyes to look at Historia.
"What about the other kids?" She asked worryingly.
"They don't seem to like me…"
Silence filled the air as Frieda thought about what she had just learnt.
"Maybe I could find someone for you to hang out with…"
When she said that, Historia brightened up and looked eagerly at her sister.
"Really?!" She asked with audible excitement "you could do that?"
The dark-haired female smiled at her, warmly.
"I'll see to that" she said, "right now, we pray."
"Alright!" Historia happily exclaimed.
The two sisters prayed together as the sun was setting down. Suddenly, Historia remembered that she hadn't asked Frieda a very important question.
"Big sister" she whispered as she looked to the side.
"What is it?"
"And what are you praying for, right now?"
The dark-haired female sighed at that.
"For peace."
"Are you scared of the titans?" The small blonde asked with apprehension.
"No…"
"Then what…?"
"I wish that people understood…" her sister responded cryptically "I wish that people didn't just murder others…"
All of a sudden, Historia felt like she wasn't talking with Frieda anymore. Like something had taken her over and took her sister away. It wasn't the first time that something like this happened, but it still worried the blonde girl.
"I'm sorry…"
"It's okay" the dark-haired female replied "I shouldn't lash out on you like that…"
Frieda looked her in the eyes. For a little moment, the young girl could see a slight shine in her sister's irises.
"It's just that I'm still shocked" The young woman explained, while looking away.
The orange sprayed across the sky as sun had set. It was getting darker, and Historia knew that soon, her sister would have to leave.
"Will you be back tomorrow?" The blonde asked with a hint of sadness.
The dark-haired female looked at her with a smile.
"I have a lot to do" Frieda responded as she kissed Historia on the forehead.
"However," she continued "this time, I won't leave you…"
As the older sister departed, Historia felt weird. Today was way different than usual. Something had definitely changed in her life, yet she couldn't tell exactly what it was.
With hope of seeing Frieda the next day, the young blonde went to sleep.
