The sun was slowly rising above the horizon. Even though it was early morning, Historia was already awake. The girl was walking through the field wondering about Frieda. It has already been a few days since her dear older sister visited her and it was getting pretty lonely on the farm.

'I wonder if she meant what she said about finding a companion for me…'

Suddenly, she heard a clattering sound in the distance. Turning to look at the nearby road, she saw that there was a carriage approaching her. The blonde girl wondered about who exactly might be coming here.

Not a lot of people could afford a conveyance like this. Of course, her sister was one of them, but Historia didn't want to get herself all fired up for no reason, just to be disappointed.

After a few moments, the carriage finally stopped.

Out of it, stepped two people. One of them was her sister Frieda and the other was a young dark-haired boy, who seemed to be around Historia's age. The girl had no idea just who it might be, but she still happily approached them.

"Welcome back, big sister!" The blonde exclaimed and looked at the newcomer "Who is this?"

"This" Frieda responded as she placed her hands on the boy's shoulders "is Eren. From now on, he's going to be your new friend."

The young girl just couldn't hold back her excitement and immediately walked over to him.

"My name is Historia" she exclaimed as she held her hand out "nice to meet you!"

"Uhm…" Eren grunted as he shook her hand.

It didn't seem like he was shy. Confusion was the feel that he was radiating, and the blonde couldn't really tell where exactly it was coming from.

"I think I'll leave the two of you alone for now" Frieda spoke as she stepped back into the carriage "have fun!"

As the wagon drove away, Historia was looking deep into Eren's eyes. She wasn't sure why, but he gave her a weird, rogue-like impression, almost like he was feral.

The girl decided that if she wanted to get him to be her friend, she needed to make the first move. She took his arm and tugged on him.

"Come on!" She spoke with a smile as she led him towards her house "I'll show you where you can sleep!"

"Okay…"

The building that she was living in was just a bit larger than regular cottage. Thankfully, it still had a few unused rooms.

"This is where you'll be staying" Historia said as they walked into a small room.

Aside from a single bed, a nightstand, empty bookshelf and a small desk, the room was pretty much barren. The young girl was hoping that with time, Frieda could maybe get him more stuff to fill this emptiness. As Eren was looking around, the blonde actually got a little anxious.

"Do you like it?" She asked him with anticipation.

"It's definitely better than living in a refugee camp."

This was not the answer Historia was waiting for.

"You're from the exterior?" The girl asked with hesitation.

The boy just turned around to look her in the eyes.

"I lost my home to titans, yes" he responded slowly.

Her resigned companion just sat on the bed. Historia has never been in such a situation, yet somehow, she knew what to do.

The blonde went over to sit with him.

"What happened?" She simply asked.

Eren took a deep breath.

"I lost my family" he whispered "I don't even remember how… I think I hit myself in the head… For some reason I only have vague memories about them…"

The girl put a hand on his shoulder.

"I'm sorry…" Historia said with compassion.

"It's not your fault" the boy responded with audible sadness "you didn't break the wall…"

"I know" the blonde interjected "but I just feel that someone has to say this…"

Silence filled the air as the two kids were sitting on the bed.

"I never really had much family" Historia spoke "aside from Frieda, I only ever knew my mother who despised me…"

Eren looked up at her in shock.

"Your mom hated you?" He asked.

"The last thing she said to me before she left was that she wished that I had never been born…"

The boy felt his insides twist. How could her own mother be like that? His mother was always caring, gentle…

Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his head. He winced, gaining the blonde's attention.

"Are you okay?" She asked softly.

"Yeah, don't worry about that" Eren said simply "I'm sorry…"

"It's not your fault" Historia replied with a small smile.

"I know…"

Once again, the two fell silent. But this time, it was more comfortable since the ice had been broken.

"Oh!" The young blonde exclaimed as she jolted up "I know what we can do!"

The boy looked towards her with curiosity.

"What?"

"We can pray for the better" Historia explained as she got on her knees "come on! Join me."

Hesitantly, Eren kneeled right next to her. Never in his life had he done such a thing, so he was pretty much copying what she was doing.

"Frieda taught me this" the blonde exclaimed as she looked up "we both wish for the things to get better…"

"Does it actually do anything?" The boy asked his companion with doubt.

"Well," the girl started "the last time I did it, my prayer came true."

"Really?" Eren exclaimed disbelievingly "what did you pray for?"

Historia smiled at that.

"That's a secret…"

A few moments into the prayer, the young boy had already come up with a new question.

"Do we address it to some kind of god?" He asked.

"My sister told me to pray to the one who created the walls…"

Her companion grunted with a hint of anger.

"I will not pray to that god" he stated with a stern voice "he sucks at doing his job. Aren't there any other gods?"

Historia thought for a second. If there were many different gods, wouldn't there be a constant power struggle between them? Couldn't one of them simply annihilate others by wishing it?

"I'm not sure…" the blonde said dejectedly.

Not wanting to hurt the girl, Eren decided to just give in for now.

"Alright, I'll just pray with you" he said, much to the girl's liking "but if you want my honest opinion, I'm not the kind of person to just wait for everything to be done for me."

"And how do you plan on making things better?" She asked with curiosity.

For a split second, it looked like Eren had a straightforward answer. However, for some reason, he winced in pain yet again. This got her really worried.

"Maybe you should rest" the blonde exclaimed with distress.

"I'm fine" was the only response she got "and I don't know what to do…"

With that, the boy looked down with resignation.

"But I hope that one day, we'll be able to walk out of this cage. I don't know how, but I'll make this happen…"

Eren turned to face her.

"Wouldn't that be nice?" he asked, "to see the outside world?"

Historia never really thought about it. But right now, when Eren was presenting her with this new vision, it indeed felt enticing.

"Y-yeah" she responded, trying to hide the blush that formed on her cheeks.

The dark-haired boy smiled at her as he faced forward.

"Let's pray for the better…"
