This is something I'm doing for Dragonslayer Week that we are hosting on the Dragonslayer Discord server I am a mod for. I hope to have a small one-shot for every day of the week, but I am notoriously lazy and procrastinate a lot so we'll see how this goes. Anyways I hope you enjoy it. The theme for this one is "Childhood Friends".

Beacon was everything Yang could have possibly wanted. Well, almost everything. There was only one small issue. Jaune not only wasn't her partner, but they weren't even on the same team. Some should say that Yang should simply be happy that they were both able to actually qualify and get into their dream school. Along with her younger sister, by some miracle, being able to join them in the same year. However Yang couldn't help but want more.

Her partner Blake seemed fine. She was nice enough if a bit quiet and aloof for her taste, but Yang always dreamed about being partners with her best friend since childhood, Jaune. Them being together through it all and taking on the world side by side. It was their plan since Signal, and now that was all ruined because some redhead got to him first and another redhead took the matching chess piece to the one Jaune got. Yang was starting to think that girls with red hair were her natural enemy.

Not all was lost however, their rooms just happened to be right across the hall from one another so they could see each other at just about anytime and easily meet up in the mornings. However the more their two teams hung out with each other the more Yang noticed something a bit concerning. It was the way Jaune's partner looked at him. It didn't seem like a big deal at first. Just a few glances his way while he wasn't looking. Then she noticed the way she blushed whenever Jaune gave her a compliment, the way she smiled while just watching him speak, or the looks of longing while she thought no one else was looking. It all pointed to something that disturbed Yang greatly, and shook her to her core. Jaune's partner had a crush on him, and it wasn't just some small thing either driven by hormones, the girl had it bad.

This was a major problem. How was Yang gonna hang out with Jaune if he was too busy spending all his time with some other girl. Already Jaune had canceled plans because he had to "train" with Pyrrha, or something else of that nature. Yang knew what that red haired floozy was up to, and she would not let it stand. Perhaps that was a bit unfair to Pyrrha. She was nice, and Yang genuinely liked her despite everything. She was a fun sparring partner if nothing else. That didn't mean Yang would just let her steal away her best friend though.

The only thing that gave her solace was the fact that the red haired Mistralian seemed to have a serious case of shyness, and was clearly wanting Jaune to make the first move. Yang couldn't depend on that forever though, because there was always a chance that she would decide to just take a leap of faith and make a move. That would be an absolute worst case scenario for Yang because Pyrrha was the legendary "Invincible Girl" from Mistral. Not only was she gorgeous, but she was also famous and the strongest fighter of their year (barring Yang herself of course). Jaune would be an idiot not to say yes if the Nikos girl decided to actually make a move.

There was only one solution to this problem Yang found herself in, she would have to make a move first. This wasn't simply because Yang was jealous of having her time with Jaune potentially taken away from her. Yang had always had romantic feelings for Jaune, there was a reason she possibly wanted to spend the rest of her life with the blond goof. However she never did anything because the status quo seemed good enough, and she didn't want to potentially ruin it by admitting to feelings she wasn't sure Jaune would return. Now Yang knew how great she was, and how much of an absolute bombshell she was, but there was always a chance that this niggling sense of self-doubt kept reminding her of that she wasn't good enough, or that Jaune just didn't see her in that way that never escaped her mind. Things change though, and it was now or never and Yang refused to let the chance pass her by because when she wanted something she always at least attempted to get it. To her life was nothing without risk, and this would be one of the biggest to her.

She had a plan. Her and Jaune would spend the whole day together. Watching their favorite movies, and playing their favorite video games together. Eating junk food, and wasting the day away with each other just like old times, but it would be slightly different this time. Yang would get closer to him than usual, get handsy, lean against him, turn up the flirtatiousness, and when the time was right she'd make sure to turn up the teasing that usually led to a wrestling match and as they stared at each other, up close and staring intensely at one another while sharing breath she'd make her move. It was going to be perfect, and nothing could possibly ruin it.

Except for a certain redhead with nothing to do deciding to join them for the day. Yang knew she shouldn't, but she couldn't help but want to kick the Mistralian champion on her ass out the door and lock it. That would be rude though, so unfortunately she would have to accept the crimson haired third wheel for the day. It wouldn't be so hard if the girl wasn't so damn nice.

The day went well enough with the three of them, but Yang couldn't get rid of the disappointment she felt that made the air feel slightly awkward the entire time. She also couldn't help but feel that Pyrrha was perhaps a bit too happy throughout the day, like she knew what Yang was trying to do and purposefully ruined her plan. Or perhaps she was simply a genuinely nice and chipper person and Yang was letting her own feelings of resentment cloud her judgment. Eventually though it got late, and Ren and Nora had returned to the dorm so Yang felt she should take her leave. To her pleasant surprise though Jaune followed her out the door.

At first it was just the usual sort of thing they said to each other when parting ways, like how he had fun and really enjoyed her company. However Jaune then said something that surprised her. He apologized about Pyrrha intruding on their day together. That he knew she wanted it to be just the two of them, and that he knew how disappointed Yang was that wasn't the case. Telling her how he didn't want to be rude, and that he figured it might be a good thing for the three of them to hang out together, but he sensed the awkwardness and would make it up to her by finding some time for them to actually hang out together alone.

Yang was actually speechless, and just stared at Jaune. She never figured him to pick up on that sort of thing, always making fun of him for being so dense, but it just showed how much Jaune really knew her. After a few seconds Jaune began to feel a bit awkward and began to open his mouth, but before he could Yang leapt forward and kissed him. He was shocked still at first, just standing there with Yang's lips against his, eyes wide open, before he eventually put his arms around her and kissed back. Eventually Yang pulled back and smiled softly at a slightly confused Jaune before saying the only words that came to her mind.

"I love you."
