(Takes place between "The Crossroads Of Destiny" and "The Awakening"
————————————————————————-
So here we are, around 6 nights ago we captured a Fire Nation warship and Aang has been unconscious for a full week, meaning that for the past week Katara has resigned herself to stay in the Avatars room even with the many rooms on the ship where she could sleep.
Still she chooses Aangs room, I know I should probably think nothing of it, she is probably just focused on trying to make sure the war isn't completely over just yet, but still I wonder.
I know……. I should go and talk to her, try and figure out what's going on with her
"Hey Katara I was just coming to check on how you are doing" I say as I open the door
But I am shocked to see….. Katara running her hands through Aang's hair….that had started to form over the past week, but she quickly snatched her hand away at my arrival
Ok mabye I had just imagined it, I can't really be sure anymore "um I'm sorry Katara, was I interrupting a healing session of something?"
"N-n-no dad, I was just….. umm, thinking about shaving Aang's hair, I know he probably wouldn't like it…… being a monk and all"
Well that was the biggest lie I've ever heard, but still I don't think I have the capacity to talk about what I think I just saw, I came to ask about how she is doing, not what she thinks of his hair
"Katara, are you ok?" It was a simple and short question but it seemed to be a straw that broke the ostrich-horse's back. Because the moment I asked she broke down
"No dad, I am the exact opposite of ok, Aang still hasn't woke up and I don't know why, I have tried everything and it just isn't working…… HE HAS TO WAKE UP!!!! I can't live without him….. I mean the world can't live with out him" Katara says while crying
"Katara, you are doing great, Aang has improved thanks to you. Mabye what you need to do is just l, do nothing…… rest is probably what he really needs right now" I say ignoring her very obvious blunder
"NO DAD, NO NO NO, A MILLION TIMES NO!" She yells "The last time I did nothing….. AANG DIED"
All I can really do is stare, Sokka gave me the basics of what happened in the catacombs under Ba Sing Se as he wasn't there, because I never heard about Katara's point of view
"What happened down there Katara?" I ask with concern
It takes her a few moments to respond but when she inevitably does, she tells me everything. From where she sees some guy named Zuko or something at a Tea shop, to where she runs in to the fake "kyoshi warriors", to where she is thrown into a prison with that Zuko character from earlier, and then to where Zuko and someone else named Azula fight her and Aang
"And then he went into the Avatar state dad…. We were going to win….. and I just watched as he was struck by lightning……. I JUST WATCHED! AS HE DIED!!!"
Now if you told me when Kya died and I went off to war, that in a few years, I would be talking to my daughter on a Fire Nation Warship about how she feels guilty for letting the Avatar get struck by lightning from the Fire Nation Princess…
Well let's just say I wouldn't believe you
"Katara, you can't change what happened, all you can do is live for right now, and that means helping Aang" I say after a lengthy discussion within my head
"That's what I'm trying to d-" Katara says before I cut her off
"I know, but Katara you can't help him in this state, you need to rest, and you know Aang would tell you the same thing"
She looks away from me and down to the still unconscious Avatar, and after a pause she relents
"You are right dad, that's exactly what he would say….. ok I'll rest for a little bit"
"Great, here I'll go get you a room of your own" I respond as I get up towards the door
"Actually Dad, I'm staying here……. This is kinda Aang and my room" she says with a slight blush "I-I- I just really wanna keep an eye on him"
Ok now normally I wouldn't let my daughter stay in the same room with any boy she isn't married to, but I figure this isn't the hill to die on, It's not like Aang is awake to do anything anyway
"Ok fine, I'll bring you some dinner in a minute, and then I'll let you get some rest"
"Thanks dad, I really appreciate it" she says with the first smile I have seen on her in nearly 3 years.
I get up and walk out the door and close it behind me, but not before I hear 4 words from my daughter that were the last things I expected to hear just a week ago
"I Love You Aang"
I peek back inside to see her planting a light kiss on the unconscious boy's lips……
I close the door and smile, the kind of smile that comes when you realize your daughter as found love, I haven't officially met Aang, but from the stories I've heard from Sokka, Toph, and Katara. I know he will be perfect for Katara, and well….. if she is going to pick anyone…….. it might as well be the avatar.
My smile continues all the way to the ships galley, where of course I see Sokka, with Toph just tagging along
"So How long have you two know"
