CHAPTER 1

Summer 1953:

Minerva McGonagall and Aquila Black had decided to spend a weekend together in Scotland away from Aquila's family.

They sat by the loch, Aquila's head resting on Minerva's shoulder with their arms tangled around each other. They enjoyed the comfortable silence between them, not knowing how much longer they had left.

"Min.." The dark haired woman said her dark eyes looking at the Scottish witch beside her. "No matter what happens." She sighed as she nuzzled into the woman's neck. "I'll come back, someday." Her voice was soft but her pain and fear were clear as day.

"Don't talk like that." Minerva whispered placing a kiss upon Aquila's curls. "We will be okay."

"My father has requested that I am home tonight, no later then 7." Aquila mumbled looking down at her hands. "Whatever happens, promise me that you will live, find love again. Promise me, Min."

She gently caressed the other woman's cheek before kissing her tenderly. "I love you, Quil. Nothing will stop that, but I promise I will try if anything happens." Minerva was terrified for her girlfriend, the only person she would ever truly love. They had been together since Minerva's 4th year at Hogwarts, Aquila was in her 5th.

"I will always be close by." Aquila promised with a sad smile, she kissed her once more before slowly standing up. "I should go home." She sighed leaning down to place a kiss on Minerva's hair. "I love you, Minnie. Always." She whispered before disapperating back to her family manor.

Once at home Aquila stepped into the doorway only to be greeted by her extremely furious father. "Evening, Father." She greeting as the perfect pureblood she would never be.

"Aquila Ursula Black!" Cygnus boomed making his daughter internally shiver. "My Study!" He added pointing between the girl and his study down the hall. "NOW!" He screeched causing Aquila to quickly but elegantly move towards the study and inside.

A moment later her father was behind her and locked the door. "What have I told you about spending time with those filthy half-bloods?!" He yelled at her pointing his wand towards where she stood frozen.

'He knows.' She thought in panic. "Father, please." She begged backing away from the man. "Father, we are just friends, that is all." She lied trying to get him to calm down but deep inside she knew it was too late. "CRUCIO!" She heard her fathers voice as she fell to the ground, she wanted to scream her lovers name but didn't dare afraid her father would go after her as well. "No Black will ever speak the name Aquila again." He spat.

After what seemed like months, Aquila lay silently, not breathing on the floor of her fathers study. She was burned off the wall that night.

It took a few weeks but once she was use to being on the other side of the veil, she was able to watch the world she once lived in only a few weeks before. She focused on Minerva and found herself standing in Hogwarts quarters with the sound of muffled cries. She looked around and her dead heart broke. There was the love of her life, the woman she planned to marry someday. There she was on the sofa with a bottle of whiskey already half gone.

As the years went on Minerva was able to find a rhythm of life that worked for since Aquila had died, apparently in a stealth attack but the Professor of Transfiguration didn't believe it, she knew only one person who would take her love away but he died a few years after Aquila.

Today was the anniversary that her love had died, the last time she saw her, held her, kissed her. It had been 32 years and she still missed the woman more than she had ever missed anyone else. Today she was visiting with Poppy Pomfrey, one of the few friends she had that knew the truth.

"Poppy, she said she'd come back to me. It's been 32 years." Minerva said softly, her professor mask was clearly down. "I love you, Quil." She whispered towards the headstone as a tear fell down her cheek.

Poppy helped Minerva stay upright, they had visited the girls grave every year together for the past 20 years. "I know, Min. I know." She gently rubbed the womans back and held her close.

Aquila had been watching the pair, they could never see her and for that she was grateful but it still hurt her heart to see Minerva upset. "I'll be back soon, Min. I'll be home soon." She whispered before she vanished finally being conceived to one Narcissa Malfoy. She couldn't watch over Minerva anymore.
