I don't know why, but that line really stuck out in my head, it was probably a throwaway joke line, but here we are. This did not go quite how I thought it would, but I'm happy with how it turned out. There is definitely a universe where they end up making out, but this is not that universe (no matter how much I thought it would be). Enjoy!

Lying in Toby's arms in the tent, Happy finally voiced the question that had been turning around in her head, once they were all safe and warm and roasting marshmallows over the fire. "What if I said yes?"

Toby hummed questioningly into her hair, too relaxed and enjoying the feel of her in his arms to fully pay attention to what she said. "Hey," Happy said more insistently elbowing him in the stomach "what would you have done if I said yes"

Toby grunted at the impact "Are you talking about earlier when I asked if you wanted to make out?"

Happy just nodded silently. Toby paused a moment "Did you want to say yes?"

"No fair Doc," Happy grumbled "I asked first." Toby just waited "What? No crack asking if I enjoyed our Christmas kiss so much that I couldn't wait for you to kiss me again? Or if I wanted your lips to warm me up before we went out into the blizzard?"

Toby rolled Happy over so she was facing him "No jokes" he said quietly "I just wanted to know if you wanted to say yes"

Happy stared into his eyes, she really wanted a glimmer that showed he was playing with her so she could call him a jerk instead of answering him seriously. "Maybe" she muttered and hid her head in his chest.

Toby just hummed again- thoughtfully this time- and stroked her hair. After a pause, he said matter-of-factly "I don't know, It wasn't the right time and I knew you would say no. I was lashing out in response to you having Quincy's book."

Happy nodded slightly, keeping her face hidden. "I knew why you had it too," Toby said matter-of-factly after a few minutes "but I still let it affect me and make me mad, but that's what you wanted, huh?"

Happy had gone completely still. Toby continued "You panicked after we kissed on the beach. You didn't want to deal with your feelings so you pushed me away by getting a book from my nemesis, framed it as a self-improvement kick for the new year but it was really so you could keep up your same old defense mechanisms."

Happy remained frozen. Toby gently kissed the top of her head. "It's okay Sweetheart," he said keeping his voice low and soothing "You were scared, and you resorted to old habits."

Happy snuggled into his chest a little more "After everything that happened today…" he trailed off and took a deep breath "something as small as you having that book doesn't matter when I wasn't sure if I would ever get the chance to kiss you again, hear you insult me, look at your beautiful eyes…" Toby trailed off again and swallowed hard.

He pulled Happy a little closer and noticed she had relaxed against him. "I know you don't like to talk about your feelings Hap, but anything to add?"

When she didn't respond, he jostled her slightly "Hap?" he murmured and was greeted by her soft event breathing.

"Sweet dreams Princess" Toby whispered to Happy's sleeping form. He kissed the top of her head, closed his eyes, and joined her in slumber.
