Drew hoped his grin wasn't too smug as the kickball sailed over his classmates' heads. He navigated the ball, letting it fall just inside the fence, with the homemade rubber ray hidden in his pocket.

His teammates cheered as he jogged around the bases.

Ignoring the glare coming from the catcher, he rounded toward home.

"I know you're cheating, Drew," Shea grumbled. Shoulders falling, she sighed. "Just… Be careful. My team's ready to beat you up."

"But— But I'm winning."

"And we're losing cause of it!"

"So win or lose I get beat up!"

"You know I'll always protect you."
