As he walked to the grocery store, Victor hummed a nonsensical tune simply for the sheer joy of making noise. Ever since his recent engagement with Yuuri, he felt like he was floating on clouds everywhere he went. The formerly mundane grocery store was no exception. Even the overcast weather couldn't seem to dim the brightness that he saw in everything.
He reached the store, and the doors slid open. Stepping in, Victor smiled brightly at the cashier and waved as he snagged a basket. With a flourish, he reached into his pocket and took out the list Yuuri had written for him. It didn't matter that he had written it out only after questioning why he couldn't just send the list in a message, and much begging from Victor. In the end, his fiancé had sighed and written the five items out on a spare scrap of paper. Gleefully, Victor held the list up prominently, thrilled to be on such a domestic mission as shopping for items off a list written by his partner.
But the items on the list were collected all too soon. Not wanting to end the high of this trip, Victor meandered around the store a little more, eventually ending up in front of a display of candy. His eyes wandered over the bright wrappers, and he smiled a little at the nostalgic colors.
He was about to wander away when it occurred to him that Yuuri had probably never tried any of these. That wouldn't do. Since it was now decided that Yuuri was going to live with him forever, he would have to get used to the place where they were, at least for the time being, living together. And part of that was becoming familiar with the small delights of St. Petersburg. Propping his chin on his hand, Victor set himself to the serious task of picking out the candy that would most encapsulate this city for his beautiful fiancé.
Some time later, he opened the door to their apartment, holding his bags up high so that the excited Makkachin wouldn't disturb any of the precious contents. Yuuri looked up from his book as Victor shut the door behind him with his foot. He smiled, and Victor's heart melted at the sight. "Okaeri, Vitya."
Victor beamed in return. "Tadaima!" This verbal ritual was one of his favorite things about his fiancé's culture. Impatiently, he kicked off his shoes, eager to get to the other man.
Yuuri was already rising from his chair. One eyebrow raised up as he saw Victor's hands. "What are all those bags for? I only needed a few things to make dinner."
"Ah, these?" Looking at the bags in his hands, Victor had to admit that the situation had gone…perhaps a bit further than he had intended. Quickly, he blurted out, "I was shopping and wanted to surprise you…so I got you a shopping surprise!" Smiling, he crossed the distance to Yuuri and placed a kiss on his perfect lips.
His fiancé looked more confused now. "A shopping surprise?"
Warming up to his own idea now, Victor replied, "Yeah, just a few things I got for you while I was out. You know, just because I was thinking of you and wanted to get you something!"
Yuuri still looked unsure, but he asked, "And what is this…shopping surprise?"
"I'm glad you asked!" Putting the bag of actual groceries down on the coffee table, Victor used his free hand to rifle through a bag. Triumphantly, he pulled out a candy bar. "Here! This is the best one, I think. Mishka Kosolapy! It's a candy bar with wafers. I used to love these when I was a kid." He pressed it into Yuuri's hand and began to rummage through the bag again. "But I wasn't really sure if you would like that, and there were so many other good options too, so I ended up buying a bunch! Do you want to see?"
Waving his hands in front of his face, Yuuri protested, "Ah, no, Vitya, that's okay! I'll look at them all later." He paused, eyeing the heavy bags hanging from Victor's arm. "It sure looks like you got a…good selection."
Victor nodded. "You should have seen the cashier's face. I don't think he's ever seen me buy so much at once." He chuckled at the memory.
A flicker of amusement reflected in Yuuri's dark eyes, and then he said, "At any rate, thank you very much for thinking of me. It was very sweet of you." Leaning forward, he kissed Victor slowly and carefully. "Can you bring those bags into the kitchen for me? I'm going to start dinner."
Watching his fiancé walk away, Victor felt himself melt even further. He trailed behind the beautiful man, congratulating himself for thinking of shopping surprises. He would have to make sure to use it more often.
