In a small and cramped room, a simple bed was placed side by side with an old desk, shining under a gentle light.

Next to the door was a square mirror approximately one foot wide hanging on the wall. A young man's youthful face was reflected in it, a look of confusion in his eyes.

Dok dok dok.

Knocking sounds on the door rang out, followed by the voice of a middle-aged woman from outside the room.

"Xiaoche, it's very late now. Why aren't you sleeping? You still have to take the Beastmaster Aptitude Test in school tomorrow."

The confusion in the young man's eyes faded away, and he replied, "I know, mom. I'm going to bed soon."

The light footstep sounds outside the door grew further away. A hint of an ambiguous smile showed on the youngster's face as he mumbled to himself, "Why bother getting troubled over all this? I'll just take it as it comes. This could also be counted as the start of a new life."

This young man's name was Zhang Che, a senior high school student from Qian Wei City Number Two Secondary School, located in central Hua Xia region of Mercury Alliance.

This planet which belonged to a different world, Mercury, possessed technology and political relations extremely similar to Earth. However, the area of Mercury was ten times that of Earth.

Thirty-six years ago, the planet was divided into several hundred countries and regions. Alas, a devastating calamity rained down upon Mercury back then.

A violent spatial storm swept the whole planet. When it finally subsided, the surface of Mercury was in total ruins. More than half of its buildings were destroyed, and nearly a third of its population was lost. It was a catastrophic disaster comparable to doomsday.

Just when the people thought that the troubles end there, mysterious spatial gateways suddenly appeared all over the globe. Countless species and quantity of Exotic Beasts swarmed out from these spatial gateways, attacking the humans' settlements.

These beasts came in all sizes and shapes, possessing horrifying strength. Even the weakest among them were as strong as the most ferocious wild animals, while the strong ones couldn't even be killed with missiles, which only injured them severely. It proved difficult to eradicate them completely.

The war against these beasts lasted three whole years, and many weaker nations were completely wiped out by them. The strong nations suffered heavy casualties, too. As a result of the war, the human population was further reduced by half, leaving only a third of its original population alive.

The most unbelievable thing was that after these beasts died, they wouldn't leave a corpse behind. Instead, they would turn into balls of light and fly back into those mysterious spatial gateways, leaving Mercury's researchers unable to study their characteristics.

After three years of war, although the beasts were not thoroughly exterminated, they were driven out of the human settlements. From then on, both sides were evenly matched against each other.

While the war persisted on, the remaining countries on Mercury sought to cooperate with one another. In the end, the Mercury Alliance was established. They formed large amounts of expedition teams consisting of military and scientific personnel, and went beyond those spatial gateways despite the risks to their lives, looking for a way to thoroughly eliminate the beasts.

After the expedition teams entered the spatial gateways, they discovered that beyond the gate was an endless world. All their technological products lost their functions, and their firearms were nothing more than useless fire sticks. They could only rely on their cold weapons to fight against the beasts.

When the expedition team successfully killed off beasts in the unexplored world, they were surprised to find that while the beasts still don't leave a corpse behind, there was a certain probability of them turning into a mysterious card. Furthermore, those whose spiritual strengths were stronger than ordinary people were actually able to trigger a spiritual resonance with the card, thus activating the card and materializing it into a copy of the beast, a weapon, or a defensive armor, greatly increasing the expedition member's strength.

Such cards were collectively known as Beast Cards.

Those who were able to trigger spiritual resonance with the cards were known as beastmasters.

From then on, humans ushered in a new age!

After discovering this secret, the alliance's coalition government immediately invested huge amounts of human resources to enter each spatial gateway. They killed the beasts in great amounts, and increased the numbers of beastmasters, one by one.

For the sake of bringing peace and stability back to Mercury, the first batch of beastmasters switched their battlefields. They returned to Mercury to eliminate the beasts, while simultaneously obtaining even more beast cards.

Even so, what surprised them further was that after the beastmasters successfully killed off the beasts remaining on Mercury, they found out that the beasts left behind corpses now, but never dropped any beast cards.

However, this much was enough for the alliance. With the corpses of the exotic beasts, related research could then be conducted. At the very least, the unique materials found on their corpses became some very advanced resources for them.

As the number and strength of beastmasters increased, the scale of the war started tipping towards the humans' side. In the end, the remaining beasts on Mercury were nearly wiped out after a few years.

Just when most people thought that Mercury would finally be at peace, and the various government departments and research units, as well as wealthy corporations, were lamenting that there wouldn't be any more research materials, an endless horde of beasts swarmed out from the spatial gateways once more, ten years after the first attack.

Although there wasn't much difference in the beasts coming out from the spatial gateways from the first attack, the powerful ones among them could no longer be killed with missiles or other heavy weapons. In the end, they could only rely on the highly competent fighters among the first batch of beastmasters to kill them after suffering heavy casualties.

It was only then that the Mercury alliance realized the cruelty of the new age. A horde of exotic beasts would emerge from the spatial gateways every ten years, and the strengths of the beasts would be greater than the previous swarm.

To the Mercury alliance, this was both an opportunity and a challenge.

The corpses of the varying species of beasts would play an important role in elevating the level of technology on Mercury. On the other hand, with inherently stronger beasts, that would also mean that Mercury was in danger of extinction if they ever slipped up.

Taking their living environment and the fact that heavy weapons weren't sufficient to kill the beasts into account, the high-tiered beastmasters became the main force in withstanding the beasts' attacks.

With the passage of time, beastmasters slowly became the most highly respected and aspired-to occupation. At the same time, their social status was also one of the highest.

However, not everyone was able to successfully become a beastmaster. They had to be capable of triggering a spiritual resonance with beast cards, which required a certain level of spiritual strength.

After several decades, research had proven that in order to become a beastmaster, one had to be at least sixteen years of age. However, if they were still unable to successfully become one by the age of eighteen, then their chances of becoming one would become abysmally low, with not even a one in a thousandth chance of doing so.

Zhang Che would turn eighteen years old in another half a month. He had participated in four beastmaster aptitude tests since he was sixteen, but every attempt had resulted in failure.

If Zhang Che failed in this upcoming test, then the noble profession of a beastmaster will be thoroughly out of reach for him.

"Hehe, isn't this the classic useless trash opening? I didn't expect the heavens would arrange such a bullshit opener just as I transcended into this world. This is no longer the trend, okay!?"

Zhang Che let out a bitter smile, shaking his head as he shut off the lights and went to bed.

It wouldn't do him any good to think about this. Since he had already transcended worlds, it wouldn't make sense if the heavens hadn't arranged some sort of cheat for him! It was only a matter of time before he discovered it…

That was how Zhang Che consoled himself…

Chapter 2: Chapter 002 – It's Hard To Stomach Being Favored By A "Beauty"

The next morning, Zhang Che saw his mother, Sun Lan, preparing his breakfast in the kitchen right after he woke up.

After hearing the sound of Zhang Che opening the door, Sun Lan greeted him while frying eggs in the kitchen, "You're up, Xiaoche! Go wash up first. The eggs will be ready soon."

"Thanks, mom!" Zhang Che replied and walked into the washroom.

Zhang Che lost his father six years ago, during the third invasion of the beasts. His family consisted of only Zhang Che and his mother, Sun Lan, living in a poor neighborhood.

Their monthly living expenses came from some insurance money given to them by the government, and the small wages from Sun Lan's job.

If it wasn't for the fact that the government had exempted all fees for primary and secondary school education, Zhang Che's family wouldn't have been able to afford sending him to school at all.

In life, however, blessings never comes in pairs, and misfortune does not come singly. Sun Lan was diagnosed with a malignant tumor half a year ago. With the current technology in medical science, only the new genetic repair medicine developed using materials originating from the beasts was able to cure her ailment.

Alas, such advanced medicines weren't something commoners were able to afford. They were priced at several hundred dollars at the minimum.

It was impossible for Zhang Che's family to come up with such a hefty amount to pay for the medicine.

That was, unless Zhang Che could pass the beastmaster aptitude test and officially become a beastmaster. It was the only way he could possibly earn that much money.

After washing up and eating the simple breakfast his mother prepared for him, Zhang Che picked his bag and headed towards the door. "I'm off to school, mom."

"Mmm. Be careful on your way there," Sun Lan reminded him, looking at her son's back as he walked down the stairs. "Do your best, Xiaoche! Mom believes that you will definitely pass the beastmaster aptitude test this time around!"

Zhang Che turned back and looked at his mother up the stairs. He revealed a bright smile and replied, "Mmm, I think so too! I'm off, mom!"

Thump thump thump, Zhang Che ran down the stairs after saying goodbye, and walked out into the neighborhood.

In his previous life, he had lived with his grandparents since he was young due to his parents' divorce, and he had never felt the familial love from his parents. He didn't expect to have a mother in this life; it felt pretty good!

In order to have the money to buy the genetic repair medicine, I must pass today's beastmaster aptitude test!

While Zhang Che walked out to the neighborhood, Sun Lan was supporting herself on the railings by the corridor, her complexion looking rather complicated.

"Ah, Xiaoche. The truth is, your mother doesn't wish for you to pass the beastmaster aptitude test at all! It's not bad to just live the life of an ordinary citizen…"

Zhang Che's father was a low-tiered beastmaster while he was still alive. During the third invasion, he lost his life to the seemingly endless swarm of beasts. As such, Sun Lan only hoped that her son wouldn't follow in his father's footsteps, and instead wished that he would find an ordinary woman and live out a peaceful life.

Furthermore, Sun Lan knew that her son's aptitude was mediocre at best. Even if he passed the test by chance and became a beastmaster, he would be someone whose standing was at the very bottom among his peers. When the time came in the future where he had to fight against the beasts' invasion, there was no way he could escape his fate of becoming cannon fodder…

——

The area Zhang Che lived at wasn't exactly near to Qian Wei City Number Two Secondary School. He needed to go outside the neighborhood and take a public bus with over a dozen stops to reach it.

"Zhang Xiaoche, you're waiting for the bus too!"

The bus that passed by his school hadn't come even after waiting for a few minutes by the road, when he suddenly heard a girl's voice from behind him.

Zhang Che turned around to look, and saw that it was his classmate, Huang Tielan. She was smiling brightly with her eyes narrowed.

-Oh, please. You don't even live around here! Why are you acting like this is all a coincidence!-

"Please call me Zhang Che, Huang Tielan!"

The smile on Huang Tielan's chubby face didn't fade in the least as she answered, "Alright, Zhang Xiaoche!"

Usually speaking, to have a female classmate who adores you when you'd just transcended to another world was something to be happy about, especially when Zhang Che was someone without much talent. But this lady here was over 180cm tall, and her weight was also over 180!

Not only that, this lady's body wasn't full of fat! You could see the defined shape of her muscles when she flexed them!

Zhang Che decided to act like how he would before his transcending, ignoring this Miss Ironman.

Tienan (Ironman) was the nickname their classmates gave Huang Tielan. Zhang Che felt that it was very apt.

"Why are you ignoring me, Zhang Xiaoche? I feel so hurt."

Loud thumping sounds rang out the moment Huang Tielan acted coyly and stamped her feet, everyone around feeling the earth vibrating.

Zhang Che couldn't think straight after that. He felt the weird looks people around them were giving him, as if they were saying, 'You have a very unique taste!'

Although Zhang Che was ignoring her, Huang Tielan wouldn't be discouraged from just that. She had a powerful aura around her, pushing away anyone between them and walking up to him, asking worriedly, "Zhang Xiaoche, I heard that you got beaten up by Wu Junyu after class yesterday. Don't worry; I'll make him pay when we reach school later. I'll definitely beat him up until he faints!"

Huang Tielan sounded rather confident. It seemed as if she had no qualms about finding trouble with Wu Junyu, who was known as a genius.

This girl indeed had the capacity to do so. She became a beastmaster at the young age of sixteen, and her father was so happy that he bought her a silver quality beast card. She was no weaker than Wu Junyu, no matter if it was physically or their subdued beasts.

Why do I feel like I'm a little miss who was wronged and is being protected by her tall and mighty boyfriend?

Zhang Che shuddered all over, and goosebumps rose on his skin. He couldn't help but look sideways at Huang Tielan and said formally, "This is my own matter, Huang Tielan. I will settle it myself. Will you please not interfere?"

Huang Tielan immediately showed a wronged expression and stamped her feet again, causing the ground to tremble around her. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she held them back and said, "Zhang Xiaoche, why have you become so distant?"

Zhang Che immediately ran away after hearing that, squeezing his way onto the public bus that had finally arrived at the stop.

Huang Tielan was caught by surprise. Seeing as Zhang Che had boarded the bus, she let out a coy humph and stamped her feet, before hurriedly giving chase. However, the public bus was already full of people. The door promptly closed in front of her and drove off to the distance.

"Aiya, how irritating! They didn't wait for me!" Huang Tielan complained coyly as she stamped her feet continuously. Dust clouds rose all around her, as if a huge beast was kicking up a fuss.

Zhang Che wiped off his sweat as he was squeezed in a crowd on the public bus. He let out a heavy sigh, looking rather traumatized.

After a half-hour long journey, the bus finally arrived at the bus stop right outside the Number Two Secondary School. Zhang Che squeezed his way off the bus and ran towards the school gates.

Suddenly, a tall teenager appeared before Zhang Che with a playful smile. He sized him up from head to toe, exclaiming,

"Aiya, Zhang Che, it's great that you're fine! It seems like my Xiaohei is rather good at controlling its strength! Otherwise, the past year's training would have been in vain!"

As he spoke, a dark green card suddenly appeared out of thin air between his fingers, and he showed it off in front of Zhang Che by waving it around.

Chapter 3: Chapter 003 – Beastmaster Aptitude Test

This young man was none other than Wu Junyu, who had blocked Zhang Che yesterday after school and used his beast to knock him out.

Speaking of which, the root of their enmity was really stupid; Zhang Che happened to steal a glance too long at their class belle, Hu Yunli. Wu Junyu, who had been pursuing her to no avail, noticed his glance, and had started finding trouble with him since then.

Zhang Che trembled slightly, thinking to himself, Seriously? Does this kid actually dare to order his beast to beat me up again at the school gate?

He couldn't help but look at the dark green card between Wu Junyu's fingers, when he suddenly froze on the spot.

[Black Wind Beast]

Level: One Star (Level 9)

Weakness: Elemental Attacks

Potential: D Rank: 25% Chance of Breaking Through Current Level, 2.5% Chance of Breaking Through Current Quality. Chances Halved on Next Upgrade. Upgradable 2 Times

Cultivating Directions: …

A bunch of information flashed before Zhang Che's eyes, freaking him out. His feelings took a turn immediately afterwards, however.

-As expected, as someone who has transcended, how can there be no cheats!?

-Even if I can't become a beastmaster, with this cheat alone, I can pursue a similarly respected occupation – a Beast Cultivator!-

"Hey, kid, did you lose your mind?"

Seeing how Zhang Che was acting blanked out and unresponsive, Wu Junyu glared at him harshly and threatened him, "I'm warning you: if you dare take another look at Hu Yunli in the future, I'll beat you up again! Mm! I'll beat you up every time you look at her!"

Since Zhang Che had just received his transcendence benefits, naturally he wouldn't be bothered with this young man in puberty. He thought to walk around him to enter the school, when a taxi suddenly stopped next to him. Huang Tielan's figure came out of the taxi, looking at Zhang Che with a grieved expression, saying, "Zhang Xiaoche, you didn't wait for me–"

Huang Tielan saw Wu Junyu blocking Zhang Che's way the moment she turned her head. Her expression immediately changed, shouting coldly, "What are you trying to do, Wu Junyu?! I'm warning you: if you ever dare find trouble with my Zhang Xiaoche, I'll beat you up so badly that your mom won't be able to recognize you!"

Zhang Che covered his face in shame, sighing inwardly to himself. He really didn't wish to bother with this strong chick. It was better to hurry his way into the school.

Wu Junyu was obviously very apprehensive of Huang Tielan. He chuckled, "Can't I just happen to pass by here? How controlling of you!"

After he said that, Wu Junyu turned around and made his way into the school with hurried steps. When he passed by Zhang Che, he whispered in contempt, "Trash! You needed a woman to protect you! And you call yourself a man?"

Zhang Che couldn't take it anymore. He sideglanced at Wu Junyu and said, "Does Hu Yunli know that you have such a cheap mouth?"

"You…" Wu Junyu instantly turned red in anger. Just as he thought to teach Zhang Che a lesson, he remembered that Huang Tielan was still watching from behind them. He could only send a threatening gaze to Zhang Che and continue on his way into the school.

——

Zhang Che's classmates had all arrived by the time Zhang Che reached the Year 3 Class 2 room.

After a few minutes, their homeroom teacher, Han Sheqing walked into the classroom. He scanned the room and said, "The first period today is free activities in this classroom. Students who are participating in the beastmaster aptitude test, please come with me to the school auditorium."

Han Sheqing walked out of the classroom after he made the announcement.

Nearly half of the class's students stood up. Some of them were going to take their last beastmaster aptitude test, while the rest were purely joining them to watch, including Wu Junyu and Huang Tielan.

Not all of the remaining students had become beastmasters themselves, however. Some of them had passed their eighteenth birthday without becoming beastmasters, and it was pretty much confirmed that they wouldn't become one in their lifetimes, either.

Seeing the big, rowdy group of students following him outside to the corridor, Han Sheqing couldn't help but look at Wu Junyu and the other students who had passed their beastmaster aptitude tests. He said with a frown, "Didn't I say that students who have passed their tests have free activities in the classroom? Why are you coming with me?"

Wu Junyu was the first to speak up, saying, "Teacher, we're concerned about our classmates and wish to see how many of them pass the test."

Han Sheqing fell silent for two seconds, before nodding. "Fine. Students should show care and concern towards each other. But don't cause a ruckus."

——

The auditorium was located in the west side of the school. When Han Sheqing brought his class to the auditorium, a huge group of students and teachers were already gathered there. They were all homeroom teachers and senior students, the latter of which were here to participate in their last beastmaster aptitude test.

There were a total of over two hundred senior students partaking in the test this time around. All of them were gathered on the stage. After that, the school staff came in, bringing with them the beast cards used for the test. The test officially commenced once every student was handed a card.

"I believe in you, Zhang Xiaoche! You will definitely do it!" Huang Tielan waved her hands passionately at Zhang Che off the stage, cheering.

The students were immediately roaring with laughter in the auditorium. Huang Tielan's passionate pursuit of Zhang Che wasn't news to the students, but they still couldn't help but laugh out loud every time, despite being used to it.

Zhang Che nearly covered his face with both palms. His face was red from embarrassment, wishing that he was deaf.

Zhang Che calmed himself down with much difficulty, then looked at the metal-gray beast card with a hexagram pattern in his hand. A window of information flashed before him once more.

[Sharp Clawed Hound]

Level: One Star (Level 4)

Quality: Black Iron

Type: Original Combat Body

Characteristics: Sharp Claws and Teeth, Fast and Nimble Movement

Weakness: Low Defense, Vitals Located Between Its Abdomen to Throat, Extremely Easily Hurt by Sharp Objects

Potential: E Rank: 25% Chance of Breaking Through Current Level, 2.5% Chance of Breaking Through Current Quality.

Cultivating Directions: No Value In Cultivating

As expected, they were the most worthless beasts. It was no wonder the school was able to provide such a large amount of them for students to undergo the beastmaster aptitude test.

-Well, all that's left is to see whether I can successfully become a beastmaster!-

Zhang Che took a deep breath and brought his palms together with the black iron quality beast card between them. He focused on it, dispelling any distracting thoughts and gathered all his consciousness to his palms.

Less than half a minute passed before Zhang Che suddenly felt an indescribable link established between his consciousness and the beast card between his palms.

The inexplicable link gradually grew increasingly stronger. Zhang Che felt a mysterious resonance between the beast card and his soul. In the next moment, an explosion boomed in his mind, followed by the sudden appearance of a mystical space in his mind.

-Spiritual Sea, activated!-

Zhang Che had officially become a tier one beastmaster!

Light rays shone from the beast card in Zhang Che's hands. The light rays shone onto the middle of Zhang Che's brow. When Wu Junyu saw this from under the stage, he looked as if he had witnessed something unthinkable, exclaiming, "Impossible! How could this trash possibly trigger a spiritual resonance with the beast card, and activate his spiritual sea?!"

On the other hand, Huang Tielan let out a hearty laugh.

"What do you mean, impossible? I knew my Zhang Xiaoche is the best! He activated his spiritual sea in such a short amount of time; he will definitely become a high-tiered beastmaster in the future! Let's see who still dares to call him a trash behind his back, and that I, Huang Tielan, have poor insight? Hahahaha!…"

Huang Tielan's half-excited, half-arrogant laughter reverberated through the auditorium, suppressing the surrounding exclamations.

Chapter 4: Chapter 004 – I Like You, Zhang Xiaoche

Zhang Che opened his eyes after cutting the link with the beast card between his palms. He overheard Huang Tielan's unbridled laughter from below, especially the part about "my Zhang Xiaoche", and he almost fell off the stage.

-Miss, have you asked about my opinion before declaring ownership over me?-

Due to that sentence from Huang Tielan, Zhang Che had become the focus of the students and teachers. The speed at which he activated his spiritual sea was indeed too shocking.

Usually, one would take several minutes to trigger spiritual resonance with the beast card on their first successful attempt, and activating their spiritual sea would take another few minutes.

In Zhang Che's case, the whole process took less than two minutes!

According to the alliance's data, the future of someone who showed such talent was something extremely worth looking forward to! As long as nothing untoward happened to him, it shouldn't be difficult for Zhang Che to become a high-tiered beastmaster!

"Congratulations, Zhang Che!" Their homeroom teacher, Han Sheqing was the first to come up to him after getting off the stage, offering his congratulations with a face full of smiles.

"Congrats, Zhang Che!"

His classmates came congratulating him, one after another. No matter what they were thinking on the inside, as fellow classmates, they should still congratulate him. It would look bad on them, otherwise.

Even Wu Junyu, who had always been picking on Zhang Che, nodded at him awkwardly in the end, acknowledging his extraordinary talent.

"Haha, I knew you could do it, Zhang Xiaoche!"

Huang Tielan squeezed past a few classmates and stood before Zhang Che. She slapped her palm heavily on his shoulder, almost causing him to stagger.

Zhang Che put on a stern face, saying, "Please call me Zhang Che, Huang Tielan."

"Okay, Zhang Xiaoche!"

——

"What? You wish to take time off from school to go hunt exotic beasts in their world?"

Han Sheqing shot up from his seat in his office, surprised by Zhang Che's request.

"Yes, teacher," Zhang Che replied with a calm expression. He explained, "My mother is seriously ill and needs genetic repair medicine to cure her illness. That's why I wish to enter the Beast World and hunt beasts to earn some money."

Zhang Che didn't hide the truth. After all, he needed the school's permission and certificate if he wished to enter the beast world as a student.

The beast worlds were full of danger. Han Sheqing didn't want to see his student putting himself in danger, but he fell silent after listening to his explanation.

A son wanted to earn money to cure his mother's illness. Who could bear to deny such a request?

Seeing as Han Sheqing was not speaking a word, Zhang Che started feeling worried, afraid that his teacher wouldn't agree to him entering the beast world.

"Alright. I approve of this." Han Sheqing finally sighed, agreeing to Zhang Che's request. He reminded, "But you must be careful of your own safety when you enter their world. You mustn't venture deep into the dangerous zones. Not only that, you must be wary of the other beastmasters, too! It's best to endure some matters whenever possible. Don't try to act tough, understand?"

Zhang Che lit up in joy inwardly. He nodded profusely, saying, "I understand. Thank you, sir."

"Mm, then wait here in the office for a while. I'll go apply for the certificate for your entry into the beast world."

——

After some time, Han Sheqing returned to his office with a certificate in hand, and handed it, along with a dark green beast card to Zhang Che.

"I know about your difficulties at home. I presume you don't have the money to buy a beast card. Here's a one star bronze card. Take it as me lending it to you temporarily. You can return it to me when you come back from the beast world."

Zhang Che blanked out for a moment, then bowed deeply and said, "Thank you, teacher. I'll definitely return home safely!"

This was by no means a small favor. Although Han Sheqing said that he was only lending the beast card to Zhang Che, the price of a bronze quality beast card was not cheap! The market price of one such card costs around ten thousand Alliance dollars at a minimum! If its attributes were one of the better ones, it could even go up to about fifty thousand Alliance dollars!

Zhang Che exited the building with deep gratitude in his heart, heading towards the school gates.

"Stop right there, Zhang Xiaoche!" Before he reached the school gates, Huang Tielan's angry voice suddenly rang out from behind him.

Zhang Che had no choice but to turn around, and saw Huang Tielan approaching him with a stern look on her face. She criticized him bitterly and hatefully, "Why are you going to the beast world, Zhang Xiaoche? Don't you know how dangerous it is?"

-Well, this iron woman's information network is really something. I just walked out from our homeroom teacher's office and here she is, right on my tail!-

Zhang Che really didn't want to waste time with this chubby chick. He said expressionlessly, "This is my private matter, Huang Tielan. Don't concern yourself over it. Also, I'll say this once more. Please call me Zhang Che!"

This time, Huang Tielan didn't act coyly and stamp her feet. She bit her lips, staring at Zhang Che and whispered, "Zhang Che, I don't want anything to happen to you in the beast world. I… I like you…"

Her chubby cheeks flushed bright red in embarrassment after saying that. Unfortunately, in Zhang Che's eyes, there wasn't any beauty to speak of.

Zhang Che was on the verge of crumbling. He really wanted to say, -Miss, which part of me deserves your liking? Can't I change myself?-

However, Zhang Che didn't say such hurtful words to a girl who had gathered her courage to confess her feelings. He let out a sigh and shook his head, saying, "Thanks for your concern, Huang Tielan, but I have my reasons why I need to go. That's why, let's just bid our farewells here."

As he said that, Zhang Che turned around and continued on his way towards the school gates.

Huang Tielan bit her lips as she watched Zhang Che's figure disappeared from her sights. She stamped her feet hatefully, but no longer gave chase to him.

——

At a heavily guarded military camp about 35 km outside Qian Wei City…

Here was the location of the nearest spatial gateway to Qian Wei City. The beastmasters of Qian Wei City entered the beast world through the spatial gateway in this military camp.

Although it was heavily guarded, it looked rather simple and crude from the outside.

After all, countless beasts would swarm out from the spatial gateways every decade. It would be a waste if the camp was constructed properly.

However, fortifications were built in all directions, with the military camp in the center. The number of bunkers, hidden or not, were as numerous as the stars in the sky

Many vehicles entered and exited from the camp's main gates. Those who entered all looked full of anticipation, while those who exited had varying expressions on their faces. Some of them were celebrating, while the others had sorrowful looks.

Zhang Che was carrying a backpack filled to its maximum capacity, full of dry rations. There was enough food to make sure that he wouldn't go hungry for half a month. He got off the coach, following the other passengers towards the camp's gates.

There was no way to acquire food in the beast world. Any beasts hunted would either turn into a streak of light and disappear, or turn into a beast card, to the hunter's delight. In order to not go hungry, all they could do was to bring more rations with them.

Fortunately, most of the water in the beast world was safe for consumption. Otherwise, everyone would have had to drop any thoughts of venturing into the deeper areas of that mystical world.

"Please display your entry certificate," a staffer said evenly, glancing at Zhang Che as the latter walked up to the checkpoint.

Anyone who wished to enter the beast world via the spatial gateways were required to show their entry certificate. It was a rule set in place by the Alliance everywhere.

Of course, no one would check on you if you were to discover a hidden spatial gateway in the wilderness…

Zhang Che quickly handed the certificate he obtained from school to the officer. After the officer received it without any expression and took a quick look, he suddenly let out a "Eh?" and asked, "You're the Zhang Che from Number Two Secondary School, Year 3, Class 2?"

Zhang Che found it strange. Could there be a problem? However, he still nodded automatically.

Seeing Zhang Che nod, the staffer suddenly bent down and picked up a backpack, handing it to him and saying, "Here, someone prepared this for you. It will be useful to you when you're in there."

Chapter 5: Chapter 005 – First Entry Into The Beast World

Zhang Che was confused. He didn't know anyone from the military…

However, he still responded immediately. He knew that the only ones who were aware that he was entering the beast world were the school leaders who prepared his certificate, his homeroom teacher, Han Sheqing, and his classmate Huang Tielan.

Even his mother, Sun Lan, was unaware of Zhang Che's plans. He didn't want her to worry and hid this matter from her, lying to her that his school had organized some activities and he needed to be away with his teachers and classmates for some time.

As such, it was obvious who prepared this backpack for him.

Naturally, it wouldn't be the school staff, nor Han Sheqing. They would have given it to him back at school otherwise.

Evidently, the backpack was prepared for him by Huang Tielan.

After thinking this through, while Zhang Che was considering whether to accept it, the staff started hurrying him, "Take your things and hurry on. There are many others waiting behind you."

Left without a choice, Zhang Che could only accept the backpack and go on his way.

Standing over a flat plaza, an elliptical curtain of blue light over ten meters tall that seemed to be something from the fairy tales suddenly entered Zhang Che's sight.

"So this is what a spatial gateway looks like. This thin layer of light doesn't look impressive at all, yet it cannot be destroyed no matter what methods are used. How mystical!" Zhang Che couldn't help but exclaim, looking at the curtain of light before him.

Over the past several decades, the Alliance's coalition government had tried on many occasions to completely destroy the spatial gateways that had appeared out of nowhere. However, they never succeeded, no matter what weapons they used against them. They even tried digging up the ground underneath them, but nothing happened to the mystical gateways.

Following the people before him, Zhang Che entered the spatial gateway excitedly. As he did, not even a ripple formed on the curtain of light.

——

The moment he crossed the gateway, the scenery before him changed abruptly.

The gloomy sky was like the base of a gigantic grey pot. Looking into the distance, there were only mountains and hills of different heights in all directions.

Zhang Che was standing on a plaza, surrounded by a crudely constructed camp on the flatland between the hills.

The base was spaced out over a large area, with rows upon rows of wooden buildings. It resembled a small town, with people everywhere. It was a very lively place.

"So this is the rumored safe zone. How interesting."

Although this was Zhang Che's first time entering the beast world, he had learned from relevant classes that there wouldn't be any exotic beasts appearing within a kilometer around the spatial gateway. It was only during the once-a-decade beast horde that the beasts would come swarming in from all directions.

Zhang Che had no intention of resting in the camp. He decided on a direction and started walking. He rejected a few group of people trying to strike up a conversation with him on the way, and soon entered the mountains.

One might get into a dangerous situation at any moment after leaving the safe zone. Zhang Che didn't dare to be careless. The dark green card lying in his spiritual sea suddenly appeared between his fingers after he willed it.

[Large Tusk Boar]

After activating his beast card, a 1.5 m tall wild boar covered in black fur and with a pair of sharp tusks about half a meter long appeared in front of Zhang Che in the next moment.

"Tsk, Teacher Han's taste is really…" Zhang Che clicked his tongue, looking at the ferocious-looking wild boar before him. He was at a loss for words. It doesn't look impressive; why would Han Sheqing like this kind of animal?

"Well, I'd better look at what Huang Tielan prepared for me…"

Zhang Che shook his head. He was in no hurry to venture deeper into the mountains, anyway. He opened the backpack Huang Tielan had prepared for him, and discovered that there was a complete combat suit, in addition to a knife about a foot long.

The combat suit was the latest invention of the Alliance. It was made using some tough materials harvested from the corpses of exotic Beasts, and provided impressive defense. Ordinary steel weapons were unable to penetrate it.

The foot long knife was no ordinary object, either. It was similarly mixed with materials harvested from the corpses of Beasts. Not only was it much sharper than traditional weapons, it was also much tougher and more durable.

Just these two objects combined were worth at least a hundred thousand Alliance dollars. It showed just how much Huang Tielan cared about Zhang Che.

Zhang Che sighed. Since he had already accepted them, he shouldn't let Huang Tielan's good intentions go to waste. It was best to equip them first; it was, after all, another layer of safety.

To his surprise, the moment he unfolded the combat suit, he saw a silver colored beast card fall out from the suit.

"Damn! This girl is really willing to spend!"

Zhang Che was thoroughly speechless. He didn't expect Huang Tielan to even contribute her beast card. What was he supposed to say?

A one starred silver beast card was worth a hundred thousand Alliance dollars on the market at the very least! The better ones could even sell for several hundred thousand dollars!

This favor was truly too much, causing Zhang Che to feel apprehensive.

-Even if I sold myself off, I wouldn't be able to afford a silver beast card!-

That wasn't right. If Zhang Che wished to sell himself, Huang Tielan would gladly buy him for sure!

"Although it's said that one shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I just… Forget it. I'll just find a better beast card and gift it to her as repayment. It's impossible for me to betray my body."

Shaking his head, Zhang Che put on the combat suit and picked up the silver beast card on the ground. The card's data flashed before his eyes.

[Fiery Scorpion]

Zhang Che was nearly moved to tears. This one starred silver-tier Fiery Scorpion could sell for at least two hundred thousand alliance dollars!

The problem was, the better the items he got, the bigger the favor he owed…

This was truly a blissful trouble…

Zhang Che simply dropped all thoughts on how to face Huang Tielan in the future. He closed his eyes and focused his mind, holding the silver card between his palms. A ray of light gradually shone on his palms, indicating his successful triggering of the spiritual resonance.

In the next moment, the silver card suddenly disappeared from his palm. It appeared in Zhang Che's spiritual sea, becoming a beast card he could call upon at will.

If a beastmaster wished to make use of a beast card, they had to first trigger spiritual resonance with the card and store it in their spiritual sea, before branding them with their Spiritual Imprint.

Similarly, if a beastmaster wished to gift or sell their beast card to others, they had to first remove their spiritual imprint. Otherwise, even if the opposing party had the card in hand, they wouldn't be able to use it at all.

After successfully leaving his spiritual imprint, Zhang Che called forth the beast card once more. With a focus of his will, it turned into a streak of light and fell down before him.

This was a huge scorpion, with a length of approximately 1.5m. Its carapace was deep red in color, and it had a big pair of sharp pincers at its front. One could tell that it was strong just by the looks of it. It also had a tail curving to the front, with a stinger about fifteen cm long, flashing with a chilling red glow.

-What a beast! The Large Tusk Boar there pales in comparison to this Fiery Scorpion!-

"Let's set off!" Zhang Che said in high spirits. He waved his hand, moving out towards the mountain forest in front of him, along with his two beasts.

Chapter 6: Chapter 006 – First Beast Card

Sha sha sha, sha sha sha…

After Zhang Che walked several hundred meters towards the mountains ahead of him with his two subdued beasts by his side, he heard some noises coming from the shrubs to his left.

"Heh, our luck is pretty good. We encountered a beast so soon after leaving the safety zone."

Zhang Che didn't feel any fear. He was barely out of the safe zone. As such, he wouldn't encounter any powerful beasts here under normal circumstances. Furthermore, he had a bronze and a silver-tiered beast with him. There was no need to be afraid at all.

However, just to be safe, Zhang Che willed the Large Tusk Boar to stand guard in front of him, while the stronger beast, the Fiery Scorpion, was put on standby.

Soon, several dark red millipedes came crawling out of the bushes, each of them about a meter long. It seemed they caught the scent of fresh meat on Zhang Che and were crawling straight toward him.

These millipedes had cylindrical bodies, with yellow rings spaced equally apart along them. Upon close inspection, those yellow rings were located where each individual section of its body was connected.

Zhang Che's scalp went numb at the sight of these millipedes crawling toward him, raising goosebumps all over his body.

-These damn worms look so freaking disgusting!-

"Hmm? I can even see the exotic beasts' attributes!"

Zhang Che blanked out for a moment after the information flashed before his eyes. Immediately afterwards, he couldn't help but feel overjoyed.

With that, didn't that mean that he'd be able to determine the strength of the beasts he encountered in the future, before actually fighting them? With such an ability, he would be in a much safer position!

While Zhang Che was distracted by his thoughts, the Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipedes were nearly upon him, causing him to hurriedly hide behind the Large Tusk Boar in fear.

This was no joke! They could spit out corrosive fluid! He could really die if he was careless and got himself sprayed in the face!

The Fiery Scorpion received Zhang Che's orders at the same time and moved in the terrifying bugs' direction like a war chariot, its pincers waving about.

The millipedes weren't afraid in the least. All Zhang Che heard was chittering sounds, and saw wave upon wave of fog-like acid spraying out of the leg-glands of the bugs, dousing the Fiery Scorpion right ahead of them.

Zhang Che's heart jumped into his throat after seeing that.

The Fiery Scorpion wouldn't be hurt by this acid… right?

As it turned out, the silver-tiered Fiery Scorpion was pretty strong in its own right. The millipedes' toxin only caused some discomfort on the scorpion's end, and were unable to truly harm it.

Even so, the Fiery Scorpion was enraged by their attacks. It rushed up to a millipede in front, waving its huge pincers.

Kacha! Kacha!

The millipede was snipped cleanly into three as the sound rang out.

"What powerful attack this bastard has! As expected of a silver-tiered beast!"

Zhang Che was unusually excited watching this. From the looks of it, these ferocious-looking millipedes were slices of cake in the face of the Fiery Scorpion, awaiting its consumption.

However, what was with that trisected millipede still spraying acid at the Fiery Scorpion? It was just as described in the information flashed to Zhang Che; it had some really tenacious vitality!

"Crush it!"

Zhang Che gave a new order to attack.

The Fiery Scorpion reacted quickly to this order. It immediately raised its pincers and smashed them down at the millipede's severed parts.

Papapa! A crisp wave of sound rang out. The three sections of the millipede's bodies were crushed like crispy egg rolls by the Fiery Scorpion's pincers, and finally died.

[You Killed a Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede. Obtained 1 Point of Soul Force.=

As the millipede's unrecognizable corpse turned into a streak of light and disappeared, Zhang Che suddenly received a strange notification. Immediately after, a tiny bit of white light separated from the streak of light and flew towards him, melding into the center of his brow.

Zhang Che blinked several times in surprise. There is actually a function like this! Why does it feel like I'm playing a game, receiving notice about gaining experience?

It had to be noted that the beast world was truly filled with mysteries!

What a pity. I didn't manage to obtain a beast card from the first exotic beast I ever hunted. However, there are still six millipedes remaining. I should be able to obtain at least one card no matter how unlucky I am, right?

Following which, the powerful Fiery Scorpion transformed into a demolisher. It waved its pincers around, chasing down the millipedes and crushing them. Smashing sounds rang out constantly, turning the bugs into streaks of light and dissipating.

…..

The same notification rang out five more times in Zhang Che's mind. He obtained another five points of soul force. To his dismay, he didn't get even a single beast card!

-Could it be that the drop rates are actually that low? Or is it that I'm just so unlucky that a thick odor is oozing out of me?-

Pa-pa-pa!

The last millipede was crushed by the Fiery Scorpion in the end, as well. Its crushed body turned into a streak of light.

However, the light didn't dissipate this time around. Instead, it gathered together and transformed into a metallic gray card, falling to the ground.

[You Killed a Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede. Obtained 1 Point of Soul Force. Obtained Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede Card.=

Zhang Che waved his fist triumphantly, saying, "I knew it! How could my luck be that bad?!"

He immediately ran out from behind the Large Tusk Boar. He picked up the metallic gray card from the ground, revealing an excited smile.

Although the Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede was really weak, this was the first beast card he had obtained by himself, after all. Its sentimental value was way higher than than its practical value!

Zhang Che swept his gaze across the card, and its data was revealed to him.

However, the other types of beast cards were much rarer compared to original combat body types. At least, every beast card Zhang Che had seen so far was the original combat body type.

"It's not good to think too far ahead. I'd better brand the Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede card with my spiritual imprint first."

Zhang Che shook his head and placed the first beast card he had obtained between his palms.

Although the Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede was much weaker than the Fiery Scorpion or the Large Tusk Boar, this was the first beast he actually earned, after all.

When Zhang Che returned to his world in the future, he had to return the other two cards to their original owners.

-Aiya, why did I forget this!-

Zhang Che suddenly remembered something, and couldn't help but sigh in frustration.

A tier one beastmaster could only use two one-starred beast cards at a time. Since he was already using the Fiery Scorpion and Large Tusk Boar, he couldn't make use of the Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede.

-Forget it. I can't materialize it, so be it. That guy's a little too weak anyway, and wouldn't be of much help.-

Zhang Che could only console himself this way. He shook his head and kept the Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede card into his shirt pocket. Before he withdrew his hand from his pocket, he suddenly went into a daze.

-That's not right… I definitely started triggering a spiritual resonance with the beast card earlier. Why wouldn't I be able to use it?-

Zhang Che immediately whipped out the beast card from his pocket once more.

He continued what he was doing earlier. Soon, light shone from the beast card held between his palms. Following which, the card vanished from his hand as willed by Zhang Che, and appeared in his spiritual sea.

"It actually succeeded!"

Zhang Che was greatly surprised. Could it be that I'm not a tier one beastmaster, but a tier two beastmaster from the moment I activated my spiritual sea?

-That's impossible! I've never heard of such a thing!

-Then, perhaps it's because I transcended into this world?-

Zhang Che blinked his eyes foolishly, feeling that this possibility was extremely likely. Otherwise, how did he explain his old garbage self failing the beastmaster aptitude test multiple times before he transcended, and him passing on his first try?

-Mmm After my soul transcended into this world and fused with the previous soul residing in this body, it could be said that our two souls now exist in a single body. So, my spiritual sea will naturally be twice as large as anyone else at the same tier, and it would make sense that I can still employ one more beast.-

"Doesn't that mean that I can still place my imprint on one more beast?"

Thinking up to there, the corner of Zhang Che's lips curled up into a smirk.

Being able to control twice as many beasts as others was definitely an extremely important trump card, be it hunting exotic beasts or fighting others.

Naturally, this secret must never be exposed, unless it was a life or death situation. He must never let others know the fact that he could summon twice as many beasts as others!

~~~~~~
There was a dense forest ahead of Zhang Che. With his two beasts at his side, Zhang Che was deliberating whether he should enter the forest.
He was currently several kilometers away from the safe zone. Although he had hunted some beasts on the way, he had yet to obtain a second beast card. It showed that the rate at which beast cards were obtained was really low. It was no wonder even the lowest tiered, one star black iron beast card could sell for at least a thousand Alliance dollars on the market.
Of course, it could also be that Zhang Che was plain unlucky. After all, he had no idea how other beastmasters were doing in terms of drop rates, and could only make wild guesses.
There were a lot of weeds in the woods in front, with no signs of any human activity. Zhang Che hesitated for a moment. Relying on the fact that his two beasts were pretty strong, he carefully advanced forward while hiding some distance behind his beasts.
Although this area seemed a little off, he wasn't really that far off from the safe zone. There shouldn't be any beasts around that were too powerful for him to handle, as he had a silver-tiered Fiery Scorpion. He would be able to fight even if he encountered a two-starred bronze beast!
After entering the forest, everything grew darker. It was abnormally quiet; Zhang Che couldn't hear a single sound, causing his hairs to stand on end.
Zhang Che advanced several tens of meters forward. Although he didn't discover anything, he felt his surroundings were growing increasingly weird.
"Forget it. It's better to turn back and head in a different direction."
Just as he was about to order his beasts to turn around, A bunch of black shadows popped out from between the trees like drops of rain, pouncing towards his beasts.
"Shit, what are those?!"
Zhang Che was shocked. When he got a good look at what pounced onto his beasts, his scalp went numb.
The bunch of black shadows were actually leeches as thick as his thigh. Their skins were dark brown in color, with strange yellow patterns on them, looking extremely terrifying.
"Cursed foul mouth! We actually ran into two-starred beasts, and in such a big group too!"
Zhang Che was on the verge of crying. Luckily, he was acting cautiously and didn't follow his beasts too closely. Otherwise, he might already be sucked dry by those Maneater Leeches.
Although Zhang Che avoided trouble, that was not the case for his beasts.
The Large Tusk Boar, who was only a one starred bronze tier beast, and several maneater leeches were clinging onto it. It was crying out loud, randomly charging forward in an attempt to fling the leeches off its body, but its effort didn't bear any fruit.
In just the time it took for a few breaths, the Large Tusk Boar's body shrivelled noticeably. It was obviously unable to put up with this for much longer.
Zhang Che obviously wouldn't stand by and watch while his beast died. With a surge of will, the Large Tusk Boar turned into a streak of light and drifted back into his brow, returning to his spiritual sea. That dark green card was now barely shining with light. Evidently, it had suffered a lot of damage. From the looks of it, it would need quite some time to recover, and Zhang Che wouldn't be able to summon it for battle.
On the other hand, the Fiery Scorpion truly lived up to its name as a silver-tiered beast. Its carapace was extremely durable, and it was still in great shape.
Even when pounced on by several Maneater Leeches, the Fiery Scorpion displayed its ferocity instead. Although its large pincers were unable to attack the Maneater Leeches due to the awkward angle they were at, this ferocious poisonous beast still had the powerful stinger on its tail.
In the battles they fought earlier, the Fiery Scorpion had yet to use its stinger, due to how weak its opponents were.
Now, the Maneater Leeches had finally brought out the Fiery Scorpion's temper, erupting instantly. With a swing of its tail, the red, glowing stinger violently pierced into one of the Maneater Leeches.
A red light flashed. The poison with added fire properties acted up, and the Maneater Leech's soft body suddenly twitched about, falling twitching off the Fiery Scorpion's body onto the grass. After struggling for a while, it turned into a streak of white light and dissipated.
Following the demise of the Maneater Leech, a ball of white light drifted into the center of Zhang Che's brow, causing him to grow wild with joy.
"As expected of a two star bronze beast! It actually gave 4 points of soul force!"
The Fiery Scorpion started displaying its godly might. After killing one of the Maneater Leech, its stinger didn't stop to rest. Instead, it stung the remaining leeches latched onto its carapace consecutively.
After that, Zhang Che watched as the Maneater Leeches fell off the Fiery Scorpion's back one after another, twisting in pain. In just a few moments, all of them turned into rays of light and dissipated.
Normally, a one star silver beast wouldn't be able to kill two star bronze beasts with such ease. However, the Fiery Scorpion's fire-attributed poison was precisely the bane of the Maneater Leeches. Not only that, its carapace was highly durable, leaving no way for the leeches to deal any actual damage to it!
As such, it resulted in this one-sided fight before Zhang Che.
[You Killed a Maneater Leech. Obtained 4 Points of Soul Force.=
Numerous notifications rang out in Zhang Che's mind. Not only did the group of Maneater Leech contribute a neat sum of soul force to him, they also dropped a beast card. Zhang Che was unable to contain his happiness.
"If I made the Fiery Scorpion to clean up all the Maneater Leeches in this forest, I wonder how many beast cards would drop in the end?"
Zhang Che's eyes lit up.
Alas, it was too early for him to be happy. The reason why no beastmasters dared to enter this forest was because there are more than just two star bronze Maneater Leeches here.
After killing off all the Maneater Leeches on its back, even more black shadows jumped out from the depths of the forest. One of the leeches even had golden and purple colored patterns on its skin.
Zhang Che swept his gaze over it. This was obviously a Maneater Leech with different attributes, and its information was instantly revealed to him.
"Oh shit, its so strong!" Zhang Che exclaimed in shock. He sent a command to the Fiery Scorpion mentally and immediately turned tail to run out of the forest.
The reason why Zhang Che didn't recall the Fiery Scorpion immediately was because he wanted to see if the two-star silver-tier Maneater Leech could bite through the Fiery Scorpion's carapace, and to ascertain if the Fiery Scorpion could kill this powerful beast with its fire-attributed poison.
After receiving its orders, the Fiery Scorpion followed closely in Zhang Che's path with a bunch of 'baggage' on its back, exiting the forest.
In their hurry, even the newly dropped beast card was left behind. Zhang Che had no way to pick it up.
Just like that, the human and beast duo rushed out of the woods at top speed.
After exiting the forest, they no longer had to worry about never-ending reinforcements from the Maneater Leeches. It was only then that the Fiery Scorpion began to offload the baggage on its back.
Its stinger whipped out repeatedly. The Maneater Leeches fell off the Fiery Scorpion's back one after another, writhing. Soon, they turned into streaks of light and dissipated.
During this entire process, Zhang Che discovered that he had obtained another Maneater Leech beast card, much to his glee.
When all of the Maneater Leeches were cleaned up, it was only then that they realized there was only one silver-tiered Purple-Gold Maneater Leech still remaining on the Fiery Scorpion's back. It was latched onto the back of the Fiery Scorpion's head, biting loudly.
This fellow was strong indeed; it was actually able to damage the Fiery Scorpion's tough carapace!
The Fiery Scorpion was a little flustered now. It had stung the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech's body numerous times, but it didn't seem to yield any results. The latter's skin was truly abnormally tough; the Fiery Scorpion's stinger couldn't pierce through it at all.
If this continued, the Fiery Scorpion's carapace would be bitten through sooner or later!
Zhang Che immediately felt conflicted within.
He could recall the Fiery Scorpion just like that, but he truly didn't want to give up on a two-star silver-tier beast. What if it dropped a beast card?
That was a two-star silver-tier beast card! If he sold it, he would have enough money to treat his mother's illness!
The problem, however, was that the Fiery Scorpion couldn't do anything to the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech. It was akin to a rat trying to pull on a turtle; there was nowhere it could bite into it.
Zhang Che's brain quickly went to work.
-Right. The Purple-Gold Maneater Leech might be strong, but its weakness was that it was vulnerable to fire attacks! Then I'll just set it on fire!-
Thinking of that, Zhang Che immediately felt excited. Seeing the Fiery Scorpion could still hang on for some time, he decided to gather a pile of dry leaves and branches around him to set it ablaze. However, after scanning his surroundings, Zhang Che was thoroughly dumbfounded.
The grass and trees around him were all green…
-Where the heck do I find a pile of dry leaves and branches!-
On the other front, the Fiery Scorpion's carapace was about to be bitten through by the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech. The former was spinning about anxiously, violently stabbing its stinger at the latter continuously. However, its attacks were unable to harm the leech in the slightest.
What should I do? Do I have no choice but to give up on it and recall the Fiery Scorpion?
Zhang Che was unwilling!
-I don't believe it! No matter how tough the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech's skin is, there is definitely some weakness, right?-
Zhang Che was contemplating deeply. Suddenly, his eyes lit up. -I know!-
In the next moment, the Fiery Scorpion adjusted itself as ordered by Zhang Che with his mind. Then, it raised its tail up high and stung the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech's tail end.
A puncturing sound rang out. The fifteen cm-long stinger easily pierced into the tiny hole at the tail end of the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech.
The Purple-Gold Maneater Leech that was trying its best to sink its teeth into the Fiery Scorpion's carapace suddenly stiffened. Immediately after, it started twisting violently in pain and fell off the Fiery Scorpion's back, rolling about in the grass.
After witnessing this, Zhang Che felt a chill down his back right to his bum, and started laughing excitedly. -This move was effective, as expected!-
-Strike it while its down!-
After turning the tables with much difficulty, the Fiery Scorpion extended its pincers forward and clamped down hard on the struggling Purple-Gold Maneater Leech. Following that, that terrifying stinger pierced into the latter's tiny bum hole once more. Fire-attributed toxin gushed out madly from the stinger as if it were free of charge.
In the next moment, Zhang Che saw a flash of red spurt out from both ends of the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech. The two-star silver tier beast struggled madly, but the Fiery Scorpion's pincers were holding its body in place, leaving it unable to escape.
Under the generous application of fire toxin from the Fiery Scorpion, the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech's struggles became increasingly weaker, and finally it turned into a streak of light.
"It is actually an armor type beast card!" Zhang Che went into a momentary daze, beaming with joy.
Armor-type beast cards were much rarer than original combat body-type beast cards. He didn't expect to obtain one on his first day in the beast world. His luck was truly not bad!
Not to mention anything else, with just this two-star silver-tiered armor-type beast card, the cost for curing his mother Sun Lan's illness was no longer a concern!
Moreover, there were two more two star bronze cards waiting for him to pick up! That was another considerable sum!
Thinking of all this, Zhang Che ran to the bronze card and picked it up. Looking at the two different-colored beast cards with two hexagrams each, he finally laughed out loud.
When he was finally done laughing, Zhang Che's face turned into one that looked troubled.
-There is still a bronze card lying within the forest. How do I retrieve it?-
After being bitten by the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech, the Fiery Scorpion's back was almost bitten through, with a bowl-sized hole on it. Its flesh was already visible. If they were to enter the forest once more without careful consideration, and be attacked by the Maneater Leeches, it was likely that the Fiery Scorpion wouldn't be able to handle it.
From the looks of its injuries, it was unlikely that the Fiery Scorpion would recover without resting for two to three days.
Here was the problem, then. If Zhang Che waited for that long, would the beast card still be in the forest?
-If I could utilize tier two beasts and equip the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech beast card, then I wouldn't have to fear the Maneater Leeches' attacks, right?-
Zhang Che felt like he could definitely give that a try.
Although Zhang Che hypothesized that he could utilize more than two beasts due to the fusion of his souls, what if he really awakened as a tier two beastmaster from the beginning?
Thinking of that, he immediately held the two-star silver-tier beast card between his palms and tried to trigger a spiritual resonance.
In the end, nothing happened.
However, this had also indirectly proved that Zhang Che was indeed only a tier one beastmaster, and that it was only due to both his souls fusing into one that he was able to utilize twice as many beasts as others.
"Since it's like this, I can only return to the safe zone for the time being to rest and reorganize myself for the next few days."
Shaking his head, Zhang Che summoned the Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede from his spiritual sea and used it to scout the way ahead back in the safe zone's direction, along with the injured Fiery Scorpion.
Previously, Zhang Che didn't bother to summon the millipede due to its underwhelming strength. Now that the Large Tusk Boar was severely injured, and the Fiery Scorpion wasn't in good shape either, he could only summon it out for show.
He travelled safely back into the safe zone grounds. Just as Zhang Che was about to unsummon them, a middle-aged man suddenly came running up to him with his eyes lit up and said directly,
"Little Bro, I see that your beasts are injured. Their combat capabilities are definitely affected. Do you require restoration services? I guarantee that they will be in top condition within half an hour!"
-Hmm? Injured beasts can be healed?-
Zhang Che thought of the Maneater Leech beast card still lying in the forest and was tempted. To avoid any further complications, it was best to retrieve it as soon as possible…
Seeing Zhang Che was a little tempted, the middle-aged man rejoiced inwardly. He pointed his finger at a simple wooden house in the camp and said, "Look, Little Bro, my shop is right over there. We specialize in restoring beast cards, and offer a fair price. We don't cheat anyone; you only need to wait in the shop and enjoy some tea for half an hour or so. I guarantee that your beasts will be jumping about energetically."
"Alright, I'll go there and take a look."
Zhang Che nodded. Currently, the best way to retrieve the Maneater Leech card in the forest as soon as possible was to heal the Fiery Scorpion's injuries.
The middle-aged man became very cheerful. "Haha, come, we'll head to my shop. I guarantee that you didn't make a wrong choice!"
——
Wang's Beast Restoration Shop.
They walked over to the simple wooden house. Zhang Che raised his head and saw the little shop's name. It was really simple and straightforward.
In the front hall, were a few similarly simple wooden tables and chairs. At this moment, a few men and women were sitting in the chairs, sipping on their tea. They were probably waiting while their beasts were being healed.
"Little Liu, get a cup of tea for this Little Bro." After entering the shop, Boss Wang gestured to one of the staff and invited Zhang Che to sit down at an empty table. He asked, "Oh, right, Little Bro, may I know what level and quality is your beast? Do they have any special attributes? Knowing this will be helpful to us in preparing a better suited restoration solution, ensuring greater efficiency."
Zhang Che nodded slightly and replied, "One star silver tiered. As for special attributes, it is augmented fire-type poison. I wonder if that counts?"
Boss Wang stared wide-eyed. He nearly sucked in a breath of cold air and said, "So it was actually a silver quality beast! Little Bro is truly more than what meets the eye!"
Seeing the strange gaze of Boss Wang, Zhang Che couldn't help but ask, "My friend lent it to me. Why, is there a problem?"
Boss Wang smacked his lips, saying, "There's no problem, but half an hour might not be enough to restore a silver quality beast. Not only that, the cost is also much higher than restoring black iron or bronze quality ones."
Zhang Che's heart tightened and hurriedly asked, "Then how much does it cost?"
-Please don't be too expensive! I don't have much money on me…-
"Three thousand Alliance dollars. This is already the lowest I can go," Boss Wang answered, gesturing with three of his fingers out, scaring Zhang Che into blinking repeatedly.
-Is this a freaking robbery? Restoring a one star silver tier beast actually costs as much as a new one star black iron beast!-
"Ugh, can't you go lower?"
"Little Bro, I really can't offer any lower," Boss Wang said sincerely, looking at Zhang Che. "Please understand that the material used to restore a silver tier beast is very expensive. The price I'm offering is on account that this is your first time here and is already discounted. Otherwise, it wouldn't be just three thousand dollars."
Three thousand alliance dollars! Zhang Che really couldn't afford it.
Zhang Che thought for a moment with furrowed brow, then took out the Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede beast card. He erased his spiritual imprint on it and handed it to Boss Wang, saying, "Boss Wang, can this be used to offset the restoration fees? I came out in a rush, and I really don't have much money on me."
Boss Wang received the beast card and started calculating in his mind.
He saw this Mutated Dark Carapaced Millipede with Zhang Che earlier, and knew that this beast's strength was truly unimpressive. To say that it was worth three thousand Alliance dollars was really stretching it.
However, in order to gain a new potential customer, he was willing to earn a little less. Thus, he nodded and replied, "Fine, I'll earn a little less and take it as making a friend."
As he spoke, Boss Wang took out Zhang Che's Fiery Scorpion beast card and handed it over to a staffer in the back to submerge in the newly prepared restoration solution. The initial estimate was that it would take around forty-five minutes to finish restoring it.
Zhang Che was naturally not afraid that the opposing party would steal his beast card. His spiritual imprint was branded on it; no one would be able to steal it away from him.
Chapter 10: Chapter 010 – Skill – Fusion!
Arriving once more at the edge of the woods where the Maneater Leeches lived, Zhang Che was feeling somewhat apprehensive.
The quantities of this beast was truly a little too many, not to mention their stealthy nature. If he were to be latched onto by one those fellows by accident, he would be turned into a withered corpse in less than half a minute!
"Mm, I'll leave immediately once I get that beast card!"
Looking at the fully recovered Fiery Scorpion before him, Zhang Che immediately felt much safer. As long as he didn't run into more than two Purple-Gold Maneater Leeches, with that pinpoint targeting technique of the Fiery Scorpion, they should still be able to handle it!
Just like before, Zhang Che ordered the Fiery Scorpion to scout the way some distance ahead of him, while he followed cautiously behind, immediately ready to turn tail and run if he discovered something was amiss.
It was unusually quiet in the forest. Only the gentle sounds of a man and a beast rustling the dry leaves could be heard as they slowly advanced forward.
Finally, a dark green card entered Zhang Che's sight.
"Go, retrieve that. If anything's wrong, don't try to fight!"
Zhang Che was delighted inwardly and issued an order to the Fiery Scorpion. The latter immediately rushed towards the Maneater Leech card with its pincers at the ready.
Just as the Fiery Scorpion arrived at its destination and picked up the beast card with its pincer, several black shadows bounced out from the dense canopy in front of it, latching onto the Fiery Scorpion's back with impeccable accuracy.
Zhang Che wasn't shocked at seeing this. Instead, he was elated.
Very good. These are all only ordinary Maneater Leeches. No stronger fellows are present!
"Retreat!"
After giving out his order, Zhang Che took the lead and quickly headed out of the forest. About twenty meters behind him, the Fiery Scorpion was following in his steps unhurriedly, maintaining a safe distance between them.
These Maneater Leeches' pouncing strength was not to be underestimated. Zhang Che didn't want any one of them to suddenly change their target and jump onto him!
As they retreated, the Fiery Scorpion started cleaning up the Maneater Leeches on its back.
Since Zhang Che taught it the enema tactic a short while ago, the Fiery Scorpion was now using it masterfully. Every time its terrifying stinger reached out, it would accurately find its way into one of the Maneater Leeches' orifices. Soon, the latter would suddenly twist around violently and fall off the Fiery Scorpion's back with a red glow.
[You Killed a Maneater Leech. Obtained 4 Points of Soul Force. Obtained Maneater Leech Card.=
Before they exited the forest, all the Maneater Leeches hanging on the Fiery Scorpion's back were given a good stinging one after another, and turned into rays of light, dissipating quickly.
What surprised Zhang Che was that this time, he obtained another beast card!
"Should I use baiting tactics and lure more Maneater Leeches out to kill, and gather more beast cards?"
Standing by the edge of the forest, Zhang Che turned around to look, feeling tempted.
Immediately afterwards, he shook his head.
The risk was too great. Let alone the fact that the Purple-Gold Maneater Leech could cause great damage to the Fiery Scorpion, what if there were even stronger exotic beasts hiding in the forest, saw that their minions were getting killed one by one, and came out on a rampage? What should he do then?
Zhang Che definitely couldn't take on that risk.
Moreover, Zhang Che had already obtained a two-starred silver card, and three two-starred bronze cards. It was definitely considered a great harvest; he didn't have to continue putting himself at risk.
"Mm. I should wait until I have better beast cards in the future before coming back here."
It had to be said that this forest was truly a great place!
Defensive-type beast cards were quite valuable. Even if the Maneater Leeches were only low-tiered beasts, their cards would still be very popular in the market.
Zhang Che continued his way out of the forest as he thought of this. At the same time, he ordered the Fiery Scorpion to bring the two beast cards over to him.
"Brother, are you selling your beast card?"
At this moment, a young man accompanied by a tall, mighty wolf and a thick python suddenly stood before Zhang Che, looking at the 2 two star bronze cards the latter just took over.
Zhang Che's heart tightened. The Fiery Scorpion that had started building a rapport with him stood guard in front of Zhang Che, brandishing its pincers, looking at the young man and his beasts warily.
The young man hurriedly took two steps back and smiled, "Relax, relax, I just happened to pass by."
Zhang Che looked at this young man with a knitted brow, then shifted his gaze over to the two subdued beasts by his side.
[Howling Silver Wolf]
Cultivating Directions: …
After looking through the attributes of the two beasts, Zhang Che couldn't resist letting out a sigh of relief. Although this young man before him wielded the might of a tier two beastmaster, his beasts were truly a little too weak. The Fiery Scorpion alone was enough to get rid of them.
Seeing Zhang Che sweeping his gaze across his beasts, the young man felt a shiver on his back.
This person's beast was even able to easily kill off a Maneater Leech! He hoped that the opposite party wouldn't misunderstand him, or he would be in some deep trouble…
Considering his options, the young man directly unsummoned his beasts and said straightforwardly, "Don't misunderstand, Brother. I truly just happened to pass by here and saw that you obtained two Maneater Leech cards. Are you willing to sell me one of them? Don't worry; the price is negotiable."
It was only then that Zhang Che believed that he had coincidentally passed by. He nodded and continued walking towards the safe zone. The sky was already getting dark.
"Let's return to the camp before we talk."
The young man's face lit up in joy, and he followed a short distance behind Zhang Che, unable to contain his excitement.
That was a defensive tier two bronze card! If he managed to buy one, he would be in a much safer position when he went hunting in the future.
Zhang Che ignored the young man behind him. At this moment, he was looking at the two beast cards in his hands as he walked along. He was so excited that he almost laughed out loud.
When he took the two beast cards in his hands earlier and checked them, not only was the Maneater Leech's information displayed to him, he also activated a skill… Fusion!
[Fusion: Level 1 (Experience 0/100), Combines two beast cards of same species and level into a beast card of one level higher. Limited to beast cards under three stars.]
As he understood it, it meant that when Zhang Che uses the fusion skill, the two two-star bronze-tiered Maneater Leech cards would fuse into one, turning into a three-star bronze-tiered beast card.
This skill was simply heaven-defying!
Originally, Zhang Che had thought that his cheat-like advantage only allowed him to visualize the beasts' information. However, that was far from the truth.
At present, being able to combine two beast cards of identical species and level into a higher levelled beast card didn't seem to be of much use.
Taking the Maneater Leech cards in Zhang Che's hands, for example, the price of two two-star cards wasn't very different from the price of a three-starred card.
But, what about the future?
Once the fusion skill advances into a higher level, the heaven-defying aspects of this skill would gradually reveal itself.
The strength of beasts had a huge leap every three ranks.
The difference in power between a three-starred beast and a four-starred beast was much greater than the power difference between a two-starred beast and a three-starred beast.
Fusing two two-star cards into a three-star card didn't have much value, but if it was fusing two three-star cards into a four-star card, it wouldn't be too much to say that its value would increase tenfold!
Of course, these were all matters to be considered in the future. At present, it was better to see how much this guy in front of Zhang Che was willing to pay for the Maneater Leech card.
"So, how much are you offering?"
Currently, Zhang Che and that young man were sitting in a restaurant located in the safe zone. A glass of beer was placed in front of each of them. Naturally, this flat-headed young man sitting in front of Zhang Che was a couple years older, and was the one buying their drinks.
"A hundred and fifty thousand," the young man offered sincerely, looking at Zhang Che. "This price is really not low. Brother Expert is probably aware of the market rates; usually a two-star bronze card is only priced around a hundred thousand."
Zhang Che raised his hand and said, "But the Maneater Leech is a defensive beast card. You should know the value of that, right? One hundred eighty thousand and it's a deal. Otherwise, forget it."
Seeing as Zhang Che was being so unrelenting, the muscles at the corner of the young man's mouth twitched a little. He had originally wanted to bargain some more, but he decided to keep quiet instead.
"Fine, a hundred and eighty thousand it is, then. I'll take it as I, Wang Dong, making an acquaintance with Brother Expert. However, technological devices are rendered useless in the beast world. Why don't we head outside to complete the transaction?"
Zhang Che nodded and stood up from his seat, walking towards the spatial gateway at the middle of the safe zone plaza.
After all, everyone entered the beast world to hunt the beasts. Who would bring so much cash on them for no reason?
The transaction concluded successfully. Zhang Che's account was now 180k richer, while Wang Dong obtained a beast card he fancied. It could be said that everyone had arrived at a happy ending.
"Brother Expert, let's add each other as friends. Please don't forget about this brother if you have good stuff in the future. You won't be disappointed with the price, for sure!"
Before leaving, Wang Dong even took the initiative to add Zhang Che as friends, so that he could purchase quality beast cards from the latter in the future.
After all, a low-tier beastmaster who was able to venture into the Maneater Leech forest alone and come out unscathed with two beast cards was something uncommon. Being able to get to know such a person was obviously beneficial!
As such, Zhang Che didn't reject him, either. Broadening his network opened up another path for him. This old saying wouldn't be wrong!
——
After completing his trade with Wang Dong, Zhang Che didn't enter the beast world again. The sky was already dark, after all, and there was no way he could go out there to hunt like that.
He had originally planned to find somewhere around the military camp to rest, but he couldn't help but stop after walking a few steps.
Where the light was shining brightly, a huge beast card trading hub with a bustling crowd entered Zhang Che's eyes.
He thought for a bit and headed towards the beast card trading hub.
Although it was already nighttime, business was still pretty good at the trading hub. People were coming and going, it was incredibly lively. It went to show that their business was more than just good.
After all, not everyone was willing to take on the risk to go hunting beasts in the beast worlds. What was there in this world that money couldn't buy? You could choose whatever type of beast cards you wanted.
Before he could get near to the trading hub, a middle-aged man whose eyeballs were rolling about alertedly came walking towards Zhang Che, asking in a hushed voice, "Little Bro, are you here to purchase beast cards? I have some cards here that are not bad. I guarantee the price is 10% lower than the trading hub."
-Not!-
Zhang Che added a word to complete his sentence inwardly. If these middleman traders were credible, then even male pigs could give birth!
"I'm not buying; I'm only here to take a look."
Zhang Che swept a quick glance at the man without slowing for a beat as he continued walking towards the trading hub.
That man could also tell that Zhang Che wasn't interested in his so-called cheap goods and could only roll his eyes around, and continue looking for his next potential buyer from the outside crowd.
Zhang Che first went to the sale area to widen his horizons. He realized that the beast cards sold here were truly not cheap, but the good thing was that there was a huge variety of them. Even the rarely seen weapon-type beast cards were sold here.
It was a pity, however. Although Zhang Che had just made a deal of nearly two hundred thousand dollars, compared to the premium goods being sold here, it was really insufficient.
Moreover, he still had to earn money to cure Sun Lan's illness. Where would he find the spare cash to buy beast cards?
Anyway, the Fiery Scorpion Huang Tielan 'gifted' Zhang Che was very competent. He'd rather continue hunting exotic beasts in the beast world tomorrow to earn more beast cards.
Speaking of danger, anywhere was dangerous. One could get knocked down by a car while walking on the streets, or choke to death while drinking water. He only had to be more careful and not venture too deep into the beast world. With the Fiery Scorpion's powerful offensive strength, there shouldn't be any problems.
It was too bad that he wouldn't be advancing into a tier 2 beastmaster in the near future. Otherwise, any ordinary non-elemental attacks from low-tier beasts wouldn't be able to penetrate Zhang Che's defense after he equipped the two-star silver-tier Purple-Gold Maneater Leech card.
After he browsed through the beast cards being sold in the sale area, Zhang Che made his way to the neighboring purchase area.
The work staff here had excellent customer service. There weren't any cases where someone would belittle Zhang Che after noticing his young age, followed by a session of face-slapping.
That was especially true when Zhang Che took out two two-star bronze cards and a two-star silver card from his pocket. He was immediately treated warmly, causing him to suspect whether the receptionist girl had taken a liking to him.
When Zhang Che walked out of the trading hub, a slight smile with a hint of relief was hanging on his face.
The two-star bronze-tiered Maneater Leech card was sold to the trading hub for the price of one hundred sixty-five thousand dollars each, while the silver-tiered Purple-Gold Maneater Leech card was sold at the high price of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Of course, this price wasn't as high as when one traded with another privately, the advantage was that it was safe. Not only that, his identity wouldn't be exposed, sparing him from future trouble.
Zhang Che had neither powerful strength nor backers. Naturally, he wouldn't want to take such risks.
In just the short span of one day, Zhang Che managed to earn a huge sum of nine hundred and sixty thousand dollars. His efficiency was shockingly high!
Of course, the Fiery Scorpion gifted to him by by Huang Tielan had everything to do with it.
If Zhang Che only possesed a one-star black iron beast card, he wouldn't even be able to make fifty thousand, let alone almost a million, and it would be extremely dangerous.
That's why life was much easier being a rich man. No matter what occupation they were in, their starting point would be much higher than commoners!
Although Zhang Che wasn't a rich guy, he had the potential to live off a woman!
Ugh, speaking of living off a woman, Zhang Che couldn't help but think of Huang Tielan's tall and sturdy figure. His body shuddered. This kind of soft rice was better off not eating.
Walking out of the trading hub, Zhang Che felt a huge burden lift from his chest.
With today's earnings, his mother's illness could finally be treated. Nothing was more important than this matter.
Of course, he couldn't return to the city right now.
Both the beast cards he was using now didn't belong to him. He still had to continue hunting beasts in the beast world tomorrow. Otherwise, he'd really be living off of a woman!
Moreover, even though the money he earned today was nearly enough to buy the gene restoration solution, what about after that?
He'd definitely be reduced to a pauper once more. This wasn't something Zhang Che was willing to accept!
As for school, since Zhang Che had successfully become a beastmaster, even if the score for his other subjects are a little lower, it wouldn't affect his enrolling into a university.
Nowadays, the focus of entrance exams weren't on cultural scores, but on whether one was able to become a beastmaster. Otherwise, no matter how good their results were, they can only choose to study in research-related professions, which were much less well-regarded than a beastmaster.
Not to mention, with his ability to visualize a beast's attributes, Zhang Che could totally choose to study as a beast cultivator! When he gained a reputation in the future, not only were his prospects good, his social standing would be incomparably high!
In order to raise the level of a beast card, one had to nurture it through combat, and even so, their growth had a limit.
Using his ability to see the potential in a beast card, Zhang Che would know that a loach could at most grow into a python, and not a flood dragon.
As such, the direction of human research was more towards raising the quality of a beast. At the same level, a beast of higher quality indicated a higher combat strength.
Not only that, an increase in its quality provided much more value to a beast's strength than an increase in its level.
According to research conducted, a one-star bronze beast was comparable in strength to a two-star black iron beast.
Meanwhile, a one-star silver beast was comparable to a two-star bronze beast.
If it was the extremely rarely seen one-star gold beast, its strength was even higher than a three-star bronze beast.
As for even higher-quality beasts, they were only legends. At present, let alone seeing one, Zhang Che haven't even heard of one!
——
The next morning, Zhang Che entered the beast world once more. First he went to restore his Large Tusk Boar card, before leaving the safe zone and advancing into the mountains ahead of him.
Speaking of which, the Large Tusk Boar card his homeroom teacher, Han Sheqing, lent to him had decent strength. However, Huang Tielan's Fiery Scorpion had completely overshadowed it, and its full potential wasn't unleashed. What a tragic thing!
Going forward, he could only hope a chance arose for this fellow to prove itself. No matter what, it was still a bronze-tier beast. Its tusks, which were half a meter long, contained devastating strength!
~~~~~~

At Qian Wei City Number Two Secondary School, Year 3 Class 2 classroom…

Looking at his students below the stage, Han Sheqing announced a very important matter.

"Class, from this week onwards, Year Three classes will be taking an extra Outdoor Combat Training class. Students with their own subdued beasts, please gather in school every Saturday morning at 8 AM. Military personnel will handle the logistics for you to head to the suburbs to hunt some isolated beasts, and use this opportunity to train your abilities to manage your beasts."

The moment this was announced, the class atmosphere immediately exploded.

Students who had their own beasts grew excited. Actual combat! This was something everyone had been looking forward to!

One had to know that the usual training they gave to their beasts only consisted of attacking some inanimate objects. Only those who were well-off had the means to procure some low-level beasts to use as training on their own.

As for going to the suburbs alone to hunt for isolated beasts… Forget that; it was much too dangerous.

Let alone the off chance that they were unlucky and encountered a powerful beast (Although the beasts in the wild were mostly eradicated by the military, there are still some that managed to slip through), there were shady people operating in the countryside. That by itself was a variable they had to take into concern. Who knew if they would get robbed?

With the military organizing the activity, everyone's safety was guaranteed, at the very least, and they could train their beasts' fighting strength. It truly couldn't get any better than that!

What, did you say Saturdays are rest days?

Che, to have the opportunity to train their beasts, except for an extremely small minority of people who weren't looking to improve themselves, who cares if you were resting or not? Instead, they would rather have the opportunity to do this every day!

Compared to the high-spirited students who had their own beasts, the other students couldn't help but reveal dejected looks on their faces, especially those 'trash' who no longer had any hopes of becoming a beastmaster in their lifetime. Their faces looked as if they were in mourning.

"Keep quiet, everyone. Don't cause a ruckus."

Han Sheqing creased his brow. When the students quietened down, he continued, "Those who aren't beastmasters, don't feel dispirited. Work hard to get into a good university. You can work towards becoming a beast cultivator, too. Moreover, even if you aren't able to work in a profession related to beasts, it's not like we don't need talents in other fields!

"Society is diversified. As long as you work hard, you will definitely find a place where you belong. You mustn't lose heart."

When Han Sheqing was done speaking, Wu Junyu raised his hand.

"Wu Junyu, do you have a question?"

Wu Junyu stood up from his seat, feeling the gaze of his classmates as he asked, "Teacher Han, why aren't we going to the beast world to conduct our outdoor combat training?"

This question was exactly what everybody else was thinking.

-Right, isn't it better to go directly to the beast world to conduct the outdoor combat training?-

There were more exotic beasts in there, and there was even a chance of obtaining beast cards! That was much better than doing so in the suburbs.

Han Sheqing swept his gaze across his students and explained, "Technological devices aren't usable in the beast world, and the possibility of encountering a high-tier beast is also higher. It is too dangerous. Thus, the beast world wasn't chosen as the location for the outdoor combat training. Of course, you don't have to be anxious, either. When you enter university in the future, they will organize things for beastmasters to train in the beast world."

It was only after hearing this that they realized it was indeed too dangerous.

In the beast world, all technological devices were rendered useless. Even the most important combat force of humans, firearms, were unable to function. The military didn't dare to guarantee the safety of everyone if that was the case.

Moreover, the geographical environment in the beast world was complicated. What if someone got separated from the group?

It wasn't like the outside world in there, where everybody had their personal terminal and could be located with GPS easily.

In that case, even if they couldn't go to the beast world, going to the suburbs to hunt for some low-tier beast was also very worth looking forward to!

In the blink of an eye, every student who has their own beast was eager with anticipation, wishing that tomorrow was Saturday!

Chapter 13: Chapter 013 – Offering One's Tongue to Help Upon Witnessing Injustice

Translator: mianbao Editor: Aelryinth

Edited by RED

At this moment, Zhang Che had no idea what was happening back in school. He was over five kilometers away from the safe zone with his two beasts by his side, carefully traversing an area full of mounds.

After witnessing the Fiery Scorpion's powerful offensive strength, Zhang Che couldn't be bothered with those weak, one-star black iron beasts.

Just by looking at their market value, one could tell how useless those one-star black iron beasts were.

The silver-tier Fiery Scorpion could fetch at least two hundred thousand Alliance dollars, while a common one-star black iron card was barely worth ten thousand dollars. The difference in value couldn't be justified.

Due to him ignoring the low-tier beasts that lived around the safe zone, currently Zhang Che had yet to obtain a single beast card today, despite killing a few beasts on his way. Perhaps it was because of his poor luck, he only managed to obtain a few points of soul force.

"If I don't encounter any beasts that are slightly stronger, I can only head in another direction. Only the heaven know if there will be some powerful beasts I can't handle if I continue venturing further away from the safe zone."

Zhang Che didn't have the guts to venture too far away from the safe zone. Let alone encountering those powerful beasts rumored to survive even cannons, even if it was a two-star silver-tiered beast, it could easily claim his little life.

The vegetation around this area was sparse. One could see dark brown soil everywhere.

In this kind of environment, he didn't have to worry about being ambushed. After all, his breadth of vision was relatively wide.

Even so, Zhang Che didn't dare drop his guard. The Large Tusk Boar was the one to lead the way, while the Fiery Scorpion moved closely at his side. Once any danger popped up, Zhang Che wouldn't hesitate to abandon the Large Tusk Boar at the front and escape with the Fiery Scorpion.

Mmm. This was the so-called abandon the pig and save the scorpion stratagem!

Suddenly, one of the knolls made of sandy soil caught Zhang Che's attention.

The knoll was only four-some meters tall. Its was evenly spread with sandy soil; obviously it wasn't natural.

Looking from a distance, the top of the sandy knoll was filled with holes with openings the size of a bowl. It was very obvious that it was the nest of some insect species.

"Tsk, there should be quite a number of exotic beasts in there, right?"

Zhang Che's eyes lit up.

No matter how trash the beasts in the knoll were, as long as the quantity is high, wasn't that akin to a gold mine?

Even if the price of a one-star black iron beast was low, but what about ten, or twenty of them?

"Go, scout ahead."

After issuing the command, the Large Tusk Boar charged forward at great speed with its long, sharp tusks ahead like ready spears. Meanwhile, Zhang Che himself was following behind at a snail's pace. He was prepared to run away the moment he noticed something amiss.

Speaking of which, all this while Zhang Che had been using the Large Tusk Boar for scouting purposes. Perhaps this fellow was born with an innate talent at taunting. Whenever it started running, it was able to lure every beast in its vicinity without fail.

Moreover, Zhang Che also noticed that although the Large Tusk Boar was a one-star bronze beast and looked incredibly ferocious, its actual combat strength was in fact not that impressive. This dumb fellow's turning speed was truly too slow. The moment it ran into a slightly more agile beast, it would be helpless against them.

Furthermore, they were in mountainous terrain, and trees were everywhere. The Large Tusk Boar would ram into one if it was slightly careless, and its curved sword-like tusks would jam into the tree, and couldn't be pulled out easily.

The Large Tusk Boar started running and making loud noises as it did. Suddenly, innumerable ants came crawling out of the holes in the sandy knolls.

Mm. They were oversized ants.

Each of them were as thick as a human's calf, and about a foot long. Their mandibles were like pairs of daggers, striking fear in anyone who saw them.

-Oh shit, these guys don't look threatening, but are actually one-star bronze beasts!-

Zhang Che blanked out after seeing them, and his scalp went numb involuntarily.

Although a one-star bronze beast wasn't that strong, these Iron Mandible Acidic Ants were in great numbers!

On the sandy knoll, a dense crowd of Iron Mandible Acidic Ants constantly crawled out. At a rough estimation, there were at least a hundred of them!

What was even more frightening was that at this moment, there were ever more of them crawling out of the holes, seemingly endlessly. It was like a tidal wave crashing down at the Large Tusk Boar.

-How unlucky!-

Zhang Che sighed inwardly and hurriedly ordered the Large Tusk Boar to stop and turn around to escape in another direction.

He had no choice; he didn't want to experience for himself how fearsome the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants' bites were, even less how corrosive their acid was.

It was said that an army of ants could bite an elephant to death. These weren't freaking ordinary ants, so even if a dinosaur was there, they could easily bite it to death with their mandibles, leaving not even the bones behind.

Zhang Che ran away in fear. However, the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants refused to let go of the prey that presented themselves at their doorsteps. These foot-long mini-beasts weren't slow in the least when they ran; they could actually followed closely behind Zhang Che's steps, causing him to complain endlessly in his heart.

If the ants could speak, Zhang Che would definitely turn around to plead for his life, "Would you believe me if I said that this was a misunderstanding?"

Of course the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants wouldn't! That's why they kept chasing him relentlessly, determined to not let Zhang Che and his two beasts off.

While Zhang Che was running for his life like a dead dog, he swore to himself inwardly that he would never provoke beasts that lived in such great numbers ever again.

This kind of freaking strategy that attacks in an ocean-like wave of army was truly not resistible by any ordinary men.

"If anyone were to save me, it's not even a problem for me to pray to them like a god!"

Fortunately, Zhang Che had killed quite a number of beasts in these lasttwo days. The soul force he obtained had not only expanded his spiritual sea, it also nourished his body, improving his physical ability. Otherwise, he really wouldn't have lasted long.

Just as Zhang Che was feeling that there was no way out for him, he suddenly heard rustling sounds from the bushes to his side. A beast with a long and slender body over two meters long rushed out and went straight at the ants behind Zhang Che.

"Hmm? What is this? It actually didn't attack me, and went for the ants instead?"

Zhang Che was stunned. The beast that was covered in a full body of golden scales pounced at the ants ferociously, and its long, sharp mouth spat out a tongue that was about half a meter long, wrapped it around a Iron Mandible Acidic Ant, and swallowed the ant!

-What… is this the legendary 'offering one's tongue to help upon witnessing injustice'!?1-

Zhang Che was so excited that he almost cried out.

He focused his gaze and looked at the beast, whose information flashed before his eyes.

Chapter 14: Chapter 014 – Rolling Blades Technique

Translator: mianbao Editor: Aelryinth

Edited by RED

It turned out to be a pangolin. It was no wonder it would rush out in joy after seeing the ants!

All in all, Zhang Che felt relieved in his heart, and sat straight down on the ground, panting for breath as he admired the sight of this Golden Pangolin hunting the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants.

It truly was the bane of ants. Although the Golden Pangolin didn't have many characteristics as a silver-tier beast, when it came to hunting these scalp-numbing ants, it looked effortlessly easy.

Every time its half meter long tongue was whipped out, it would bring an Iron Mandible Acidic Ant back into its mouth and swallow it.

The Iron Mandible Acidic Ants were no ordinary ants, either. They didn't show any signs of weakness even when under sudden attack, and surrounded the Golden Pangolin. They opened their powerful mandibles, revealing a savage demeanor that seemed like they were intent on reducing it to dregs.

Even so, although the Golden Pangolin was over two meters long, its body was unusually nimble, moving back and forth in the encirclement, not allowing any of the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants to crawl onto its body.

Furthermore, almost its entire body was covered in golden scales. Even if it was careless and a few Iron Mandible Acidic Ants crawled onto its body, those ants had no way of biting down into it.

"Ah, it's a silver-tier beast. Should I hunt it when it's done eating the ants? Although it's a little too ungrateful an act, but it is a silver-tier beast after all. I'll really regret it if I missed this chance."

Zhang Che stared at the Golden Pangolin, as ideas started sprouting in his heart.

Even though the pangolin didn't display any offensive strength befitting of a silver-tier beast, the defensive powers of its scales was truly a little too strong. What if this fellow dropped a defensive-type beast card after its death?

It would really be a huge windfall!

-Mm, I'll just wait here quietly for that fellow to finish off all the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants. No matter what, this fellow helped me. I'll let it finish its business first.-

On the battlefield, the Golden Pangolin was akin to a fish in water. Its slender body maneuvered around the group of ants, and it would spit out its tongue from time to time to coil around a trophy, bringing it into its stomach, yet ensuring that it wasn't injured in the least.

Not to mention others, just its evasive skills was worthy of it being silver-tier.

Of course, the Golden Pangolin was mainly gifted. The defensive strength of its golden scales was truly a little too dazzling, and the ants were helpless against it.

Finally, the Golden Pangolin had its fill and stopped hunting the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants.

Even so, the ants had no idea of the meaning of fear. They continued surrounding the Golden Pangolin and attacked it like waves upon waves, slamming against a sturdy reef.

The Golden Pangolin was finally angered. Since when did food become so arrogant? It was even kind enough to stop eating them, and yet they continued to tangle with it ceaselessly!

In the next moment, Zhang Che suddenly stared wide-eyed, his mouth agape as he saw something unbelievable. His eyeballs were fixed in place, unmoving.

Zhang Che had thought that the Golden Pangolin would leave after eating its fill, and he too, was prepared to continue running.

Who would've thought that the Golden Pangolin that didn't display a shred of offensive strength earlier would suddenly roll itself up, turning it into a golden ball.

That was not the most important point, however. The crucial point was that the scales on the Golden Pangolin's back actually flared up, like innumerable petals on a golden flower, and it started rolling on the ground.

"Damn, it actually can do something like that!"

The risen scales of the Golden Pangolin were like sharp blades. With a high-speed rolling motion, it ground over the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants and shredded them into pieces, leaving a trail full of corpses and yellow fluids.

-Mm, when it used its tongue to help Zhang Che out earlier, the Golden Pangolin was only using a common method of hunting for food. This beautiful rolling blade technique is the true fighting style of this silver-tier beast!-

It had to be said that this kind of fighting style was too shameful.

Not only did the scales that covered its entire body guarantee its safety, it could also cut through its surrounding enemies with no way of escape. How damnable!

Zhang Che was already contemplating whether he should just keep to himself and leave quietly with his beasts. A beast that was adept at both offense and defense was too difficult to hunt.

Let alone the others, the Large Tusk Boar that was stuck in a supporting role all this time was already rendered helpless in such a situation and couldn't display much of its strength.

Zhang Che couldn't possibly hopethe Large Tusk Boar's tusks could break through the Golden Pangolin's defense. That was obviously just wishful thinking.

Then again, he was so freaking unwilling to just let it go!

This was a silver-tier beast! Not only that, it was also at the one-star tier, which he could use currently. It couldn't get any better than that!

Of course, Zhang Che's mind was clouded by greed. He hadn't even considered the possibility that with his unlucky disposition, he wasn't able to guarantee that the Golden Pangolin would drop a beast card upon its death.

At this moment, the almighty Golden Pangolin had already killed off more than half of the surrounding Iron Mandible Acidic Ants. The ground was covered in yellow fluid, and bits and pieces of the ants' corpses.

Finally, the memories hidden deep within the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants' genes were roused from their slumber, causing them to realize that the enemy before them was something they couldn't hope to overcome.

Shashashasha…

With their minds cleared up, the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants hurriedly turned tail and ran immediately, crawling back into the knolls, giving up on putting up a strong front.

The Golden Pangolin didn't give chase, either. It stretched out its body once more, watching triumphantly as the group of Iron Mandible Acidic Ants escaped like a bunch of defeated dogs.

"Go, feel out this fellow's strength!"

Zhang Che decided that he had to give it a try no matter what. He gave the order, and the Large Tusk Boar raised its tusks once more, charging in the Golden Pangolin's direction. When its heavy body went charging forward, it gave off a rather ferocious vibe.

After hearing the commotion on this side, the Golden Pangolin turned its head in this direction abruptly, and saw the Large Tusk Boar's huge figure charging at it. Its long, slender body curled up into a scaly ball once more.

Zhang Che cursed out loud, "Damn you! You're a silver-tier beast, alright? Can't you bring out some courage and fight head-on?"

As it turned out, the Golden Pangolin definitely belonged in the shameless category!

Just like how it rolled over the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants earlier, its scales flared up and started using the rolling blades technique, taking on the Large Tusk Boar.

The Large Tusk Boar sensed great danger to itself. Its head sank a little, aiming its tusks at the impending ball of scaly blades and rammed violently into it.

The Large Tusk Boar was very confident in its ramming, and wasn't afraid of this opponent that employed such a cowardly fighting style.

Peng! The Golden Pangolin's curled-up figure bounced back at a greater speed than when it rolled over there, flattening a large patch of grass and flowers.

Mm, colliding head on against a wild boar was something that required huge amounts of courage and strength!

Although the Golden Pangolin came rolling in from the front with the rolling blades technique, its scales were unable to reach the Large Tusk Boar's body!

Chapter 15: Chapter 015 – Wind Shadow Wolf

Edited by RED

In the end, Zhang Che was unable to do anything against the Golden Pangolin.

Mm, it would be more accurate to say that Zhang Che's beasts were helpless against the Golden Pangolin's body of golden armor. It was like a rat was trying to pull on a ghost; there was nowhere it could sink its teeth into.

What's more, when the Golden Pangolin spread its scales open and used the terrifying rolling blades technique, it would have shredded the Large Tusk Boar into pieces if it wasn't for the latter's rich combat experience and using its tusks to defend itself in time.

Fortunately, the Golden Pangolin wasn't a beast with a violent nature. Seeing Zhang Che and his gang were backing off voluntarily, it uncurled itself proudly and sped off into the distance with its claws. In just a short while, it had disappeared from Zhang Che's sight.

Although Zhang Che felt regret in his heart watching the Golden Pangolin disappear, he felt an inexplicable sense of relief at the same time.

Mm, since he failed to repay kindness with ingratitude, he was still not that bad of a person!

If the missing Golden Pangolin were to learn Zhang Che's thoughts, it would surely stick out the longest middle claw in its forelimbs to make a common hand gesture known to all living beings.

-"Kid, luckily this little master here has strong defenses. You think I'd be alive and kicking right now otherwise?"-

Going forward, Zhang Che didn't dare to continue exploring in the same direction anymore. Let alone the Iron Mandible Acidic Ants that were adept at utilizing their overwhelming numbers, even if he encountered some other powerful beasts, he wouldn't be able to handle it.

——

After leaving the area filled with sandy knolls, there was now a valley filled with bushes in front of him.

Just as he was considering whether to enter this area, he saw the branches and leaves rustling. Three big wolves about the size of baby cows emerged from the bushes, staring at Zhang Che, their green eyes gleaming with cold light.

[Wind Shadow Wolf]

Zhang Che's eyes immediately lit up.

It actually had a potential of C rank! How awesome!

Its weakness was also poison attacks; it just couldn't get any better!

Zhang Che fell in love with the three Wind Shadow Wolves immediately. It just so happened that he had no beast he could call his own yet, and these three came right up to his doorstep. They could definitely run for the top ten fine beasts!

"Awoooo!"

Zhang Che took the three Wind Shadow Wolves as prime hunting targets. Naturally, the Wind Shadow Wolves had similar ideas. One of them let out a howl, following which the three wolves' figures charged straight at him at lightning speed.

"Shit, they're actually this fast!"

Zhang Che was slightly shocked and hurriedly ordered the Fiery Scorpion to guard by his side, paying 120% attention!

As for the Large Tusk Boar, since that fellow had difficulty changing directions, Zhang Che had no hopes of it being able to defend against the Wind Shadow Wolves' attacks. Instead, he ordered it to charge right at them!

The three ash-green figures were approaching extremely quickly. With a slight sway they managed to easily dodge the Large Tusk Boar's charge, and went at Zhang Che in a triangle formation.

However, there wasn't any trace of panic on Zhang Che's face. The Large Tusk Boar in front suddenly turned into a streak of light and flew back into Zhang Che's glabella, returning to his spiritual sea.

In the next moment, a one-star bronze card appeared between the tips of Zhang Che's fingers. With a slight shake, the Large Tusk Boar's imposing figure suddenly appeared between Zhang Che and the three Wind Shadow Wolves like a wall.

There was no way the Wind Shadow Wolves could anticipate such a shameless move from Zhang Che. They were unable to change the direction of their charge, and two of them directly slammed into the Large Tusk Boar's body, rebounding several meters away, disoriented from the impact.

The remaining Wind Shadow Wolf pounced towards Zhang Che from a different angle, and it managed to dodge to the side of the Large Tusk Boar. The Wind Shadow Wolf opened its long, narrow jaws, revealing two rows of sharp teeth, and lunged at Zhang Che's throat.

"Sting it!"

Zhang Che smiled thinly. The moment he sent the order, the Fiery Scorpion guarding at his side remained unmoving, but its long tail quickly whipped out at lightning speed, violently stinging the Wind Shadow Wolf's mouth with a faint red glow.

"Awoooo!"

A sorrowful howl rang out. The Wind Shadow Wolf's tongue was stung. The poison, augmented with fire properties, caused its tongue to swell like a balloon. The tremendous pain rendered it unable to move as it wished, rolling around on the ground.

Although it was usually very hard for the Large Tusk Boar to deal with beasts possessing high speed, when faced against a Wind Shadow Wolf whose tongue was stung by the Fiery Scorpion and rendered immobile, there wasn't any difficulty in that at all!

With its sharp tusks leading the way, the Large Tusk Boar lowered its head and and drove them right into the Wind Shadow Wolf on the ground.

Puchi! A sound rang out. The pitiful Wind Shadow Wolf was almost pushed into the ground by the Large Tusk Boar, and its abdomen was penetrated by the horrifying tusks, immediately dying on the spot.

["You Killed a Wind Shadow Wolf. Obtained 5 Points of Soul Force. Obtained Wind Shadow Wolf Card!"=

Zhang Che almost cheered out loud after hearing the notification sound chiming in his mind.

The heavens pitied him. He finally got lucky for once today, obtaining a beast card from the first Wind Shadow Wolf he killed!

The Wind Shadow Wolf's corpse turned into streaks of light. Immediately afterwards, the light gathered and formed a one-star bronze card, falling to the ground. However, Zhang Che had no time to pick it up at this moment.

The other Wind Shadow Wolves had recovered from their concussion. Seeing their companion killed, they let out mournful howls and their green eyes revealed a vengeful red glow. They pounced at Zhang Che once more without any hesitation.

This time, they were too close to him, and the Large Tusk Boar was unable to stop them.

However, the Fiery Scorpion wasn't just for show, either. As a silver-tier beast, although speed wasn't its strong suit, it didn't mean that its attack speed was slow.

In the time it took for a spark to fly, the Fiery Scorpion's pincers were abruptly raised up and thrown out at the same time, clamping accurately on the legs of the Wind Shadow Wolves.

Kacha! The sound rang out twice, and blood splattered everywhere. They suddenly lost their balance and fell to the ground.

At the side, the Large Tusk Boar was here to pick up some easy kills. It came running up, grunting as its tusks dealt the finishing blow, adding a pair of harrowing bloody holes to the Wind Shadow Wolves' bodies.

It had to be mentioned that these beasts had really strong vitality. Even after they sustained such heavy injuries, the Wind Shadow Wolves were actually still struggling to crawl to their feet, limping towards Zhang Che.

"Shit, are they perhaps unkillable cockroaches?"

Zhang Che was shocked, and his astonishment turned into being pleasantly surprised immediately after!

The first Wind Shadow Wolf was merely stung by the Fiery Scorpion once, and immediately died after the Large Tusk Boar dealt the finishing blow to it. It seemed like the credits were mainly due to the Fiery Scorpion's poison attack.

-Since it was like this, beasts were still most vulnerable to attacks that targeted their weaknesses, resulting in double the efficiency!

-Therefore, it is best that I look for beasts that are vulnerable to poison and fire attribute attacks to hunt. That way, I'll definitely obtain many more beast cards!-

Just like that, a wide path opened right before Zhang Che.

Before that, however, he should still finish off the two Wind Shadow Wolves in front of him, and see if a second beast card would drop for him!

Chapter 16: Chapter 016 – Return

Translator: mianbao Editor: Aelryinth

Edited by RED

Time flew by quickly, and it was already Friday in the blink of an eye.

Huang Tielan rushed to the public bus stop she frequented early in the morning, hoping to bump into that young man's figure.

Alas, she returned in disappointment in the end.

"What should I do? Zhang Xiaoche had already went into the beast world for three days! Why isn't he back yet?

"It couldn't be that he met with some danger, right? Peipeipei. It can't be! With the Fiery Scorpion I gave him, he shouldn't have met with any powerful beasts as long as he didn't go too far away from the safe zone…

"Mm, that's right! Zhang Xiaoche is definitely the best! How could anything happen to him?"

Huang Tielan's imagination ran wild during her journey, and her expressions kept changing from one to another. After that, it was unknown what she was thinking, as a slight smile showed on her chubby face and she stamped her feet on the ground out of habit.

Dong!

The whole public bus trembled violently for a moment. Every passenger felt their bodies sway slightly, and the bus driver in front thought that his vehicle had hit something. He instinctively stepped on the brakes, and the whole bus suddenly plunged into momentary chaos.

~~~~~~
Dinglingling…
The bells that signified the end of class rang. Following the teacher's exit from the classroom, a group of young men and women ran out of the class, one after another. Some of them ran down the stairs, heading to the schoolyard below, while some of them leaned against the corridor railings in groups and started mingling among themselves.
The tall and muscular Wu Junyu was walking towards the washroom at the lower levels with big strides, when suddenly a slightly chubby young man came up from behind him.
"Wu Junyu, I have some news to tell you."
The slightly chubby young man was wearing a mysterious smile on his face, as if he had gotten his hands on some earth-shattering secrets, waiting for Wu Junyu to ask him about it.
"Speak or fart out whatever you're holding in."
However, Wu Junyu only spared a sideway glance at him as he continued walking. Obviously, he was annoyed at him for putting on airs.
The chubby youngster's face stiffened slightly, but he didn't take it to mind. The knowing look on his face was even more apparent as he said in a hushed voice, "This news is related to Zhang Che."
As expected, Wu Junyu stopped in place in the next moment and turned around to look at the youngster with a narrowed gaze, asking, "Zhang Che? Didn't that brat take time off from school because of some family matters? Stop putting on airs, Liu Weihao."
Seeing as Wu Junyu's attention was finally drawn in, the youngster known as Liu Weihao immediately chuckled and continued in his hushed voice, "Last night, I unintentionally overheard my father saying that our class's Zhang Che actually got our school to issue him a certificate to enter the beast world to hunt exotic beasts."
"What?"
Wu Junyu didn't believe what he just heard. His eyes were wide open, looking at Liu Weihao by his side. Even his voice rose an octave higher, asking, "You're saying Zhang Che, that brat, went into the beast world? Is that for real?"
Liu Weihao's eyes narrowed into a slits as he said, "It's true. I personally heard my father saying it. Zhang Che's certificate was even requested by our Teacher Han for Vice Principal Ma to approve."
"Does that brat really think he's a genius?" Wu Junyu said, feeling half astonished and half secretly delighted. "Not only did he just became a beastmaster not long ago, his family is also poor, and yet he dares to go hunt beasts in the beast world! He truly is childishly naive. I hope he can walk out from the spatial gateway safely!"
Liu Weihao chuckled, "It's already been three days. I guess that kid was surely shredded apart by beasts. It's not that easy a place to live in."
Wu Junyu sighed hypocritically. "But, I still hope that he'll be lucky enough to come out safely. We're classmates after all. We can't possibly hope for him to die in there."
"Right, right, right. We're all classmates. Of course we hope that he'll survive."
Although both of them claimed that they were hoping for Zhang Che to return alive, the delightful smile on their faces betrayed their true thoughts.
~~~~~~

The suburbs of Qian Wei City, the military camp where the spatial gateway was located…

From within the magic-like blue screen of light, a young man with a childish, yet smart face suddenly walked out, wearing a faint smile. He turned back to look at the spatial gateway behind him for a moment, then walked towards the military camp with big strides, shouldering his backpack.

That young man was none other than Zhang Che!

He was on a roll after he killed the three Wind Shadow Wolves two days ago, getting two Wind Shadow Wolf cards from them. He was so happy that he was beaming with joy.

At the same time, Zhang Che's previous conjecture was also proven. His spiritual sea was, as expected, twice as large as others. He was actually able to employ twice as many beast cards simultaneously, and with the addition of two Wind Shadow Wolves, his combat power grew by a huge margin instantaneously.

As such, Zhang Che continued on his hunt to get more beast cards enthusiastically. He went on a blazing trip to find more low-tier beasts.

However, what happened next baffled him. In the next half a day, although he was lucky in finding and killing several other species of exotic beasts, he did not obtain another card.

He was an unlucky fellow, indeed. Even when the occasional luck came knocking, he would immediately return to his usual condition, making Zhang Che thoroughly speechless.

Today, however, Zhang Che got a neat little harvest.

Thinking of the stack of one star black iron cards in his backpack, Zhang Che's lips couldn't help but curl up into a smile.

Although they were the most worthless black iron-tier beast cards, they were in large amounts. He had nearly twenty of them! Even if one of them were sold for a few thousand dollars, when added together the sum was still pretty considerable.

Of course, if he just sold them like that, it wouldn't be worth it. Zhang Che was going to use them to practice his fusion skill.

It had to be said that the fusion skill was really a little too useless at level 1. It could only be used to fuse beast cards that were under three stars. Its true value wouldn't show unless he levelled it up!

——

After leaving the camp, Zhang Che boarded a coach heading to the city, then switched to a public bus that went to his school.

He wasn't in a hurry to go home. Instead, he went to school to cancel his leave, and return the Large Tusk Boar card to his homeroom teacher, Han Sheqing.

By the time he reached the school, it was already pretty late. Classes had ended. Only a handful of students were still walking out from the gates.

Since the beginning of the new age, the school curriculum was no longer as packed as before. Not to mention having no classes on weekends, even Friday nights were free from self study. If students from before the disaster were to learn of the current situation, who knows what they would look like out in envy.

Since it was already getting late, Teacher Han was surely no longer in his office.

Fortunately, he lived in the school dormitories. Zhang Che didn't have to fret about not being able to find him. He gave Han Sheqing a call, and as expected, the latter was currently at home.

Zhang Che came to the staff quarters, and saw Han Sheqing standing in the garden downstairs, his face full of smiles.

"Welcome back, Zhang Che. It's great that you're fine."

As a responsible homeroom teacher, Han Sheqing had been very worried about Zhang Che over the last few days. After all, he had entered the beast world before, and knew how dangerous it was in there.

When he saw the perfectly healthy Zhang Che walking towards him, Han Sheqing finally let out a long sigh of relief.

Chapter 17: Chapter 017 – Becoming Stronger For Your Sake

Translator: mianbao Editor: Aelryinth

Edited by RED

"Outdoor survival training?"

After bidding farewell to Han Sheqing, Zhang Che thought back about the news his teacher had told him. His eyes narrowed slightly.

It seemed like the Alliance was taking students' development more seriously now. In the past, there would only be outdoor training after one had entered university, and now they actually implemented it during the third year of high school.

Judging by that trend, it was probable in the future that not only would senior high schoolers be required to undergo such training, but all students who had already become beastmasters.

After all, increasingly stronger exotic beasts would make their appearances during the once-a-decade beast horde. Scientific weapons alone were no longer sufficient to deal with them. They had to rely on the competent high-tier beastmasters to fend off the beasts.

Even so, every high-tier beastmaster needed time to become as strong as they were, and many of them would fall to the horde every ten years. This gave the Alliance a serious sense of crisis.

Under such circumstances, raising the levels of the low-tier beastmasters became their main focus.

If they could start the beastmasters' training even a day earlier, then the talented ones would rise to the ranks of high-tier beastmasters a day earlier. This would definitely be greatly beneficial to the Alliance's strength as a whole.

Teacher Han even revealed a piece of information to Zhang Che, saying that the universities in the various regions which specialized in recruiting beastmasters would start to lower their criteria for cultural subjects from this year onwards. As long as the students were promising among the beastmasters, even if their cultural grades were lower than trash, they would be accepted into the beastmaster universities.

This news gave Zhang Che much delight.

After being reborn into a new life, there was no way he could get used to the life of a student and having to handle examinations again.

Now, as long as his own strength continued to rise steadily, even if he was absent from school for the next two months, he could still enroll in the prestigious universities in the Hua Xia region.

In Zhang Che's vision, he would continue entering the beast world frequently from now on to hunt beasts and get beast cards. On one hand, he would be raising his skills as a beastmaster as fast as he can, while on the other hand, he would be raising the level of his fusion skill as quickly as possible.

As long as he could raise his fusion skill to level 2, then he could fuse three-star beast cards at the very least, increasing his beasts' strengths greatly!

In this vast, brilliant world, if one wished to live a better life, there was no way better than becoming a top-tier beastmaster!

As for Zhang Che, who had a cheat-like advantage over others, he knew very clearly that he could definitely rise to become one of the figures at the very top of the pyramid, provided he was willing to work for it!

"I'm back, Mom!"

Returning back to his home in the poor neighborhood, Zhang Che could not suppress the excitement in his heart and called out.

"You're back, Xiaoche!" Sun Lan replied in pleasantly surprise from inside the house. She quickly ran to the door and opened it. Seeing Zhang Che standing in front of the door with a slight smile, she hurriedly pulled him in.

"Have you eaten, Xiaoche? Should Mom cook some noodles for you?"

After not seeing her son for several days, Sun Lan's pale, sickly face showed an affectionate smile, and she asked about her son's wellness at the first opportunity.

Zhang Che's eyes reddened uncontrollably. He shook his head and replied, "I've eaten, Mom. I'm not hungry. Take a seat first. I have good news for you."

Since he returned safely, Zhang Che was prepared to tell Sun Lan the news about him becoming a beastmaster and earning enough money to cure her illness to cheer her up.

Sun Lan's heart skipped a beat, but her expression remained unchanged. She nodded, looking at Zhang Che with a smile and said, "Alright, so what good news does Xiaoche have for Mommy?"

"Mom, I passed the beastmaster aptitude test and am now an official beastmaster!"

"Really?" Sun Lan's eyes widened slightly. She feigned a happy look and said, "Then Mom will have to congratulate Xiaoche!"

In Sun Lan's heart, however, she sighed, -In the end, Xiaoche still set foot on this path. I can only hope that he won't be unlucky like his father. I'd be content if he could live his life out safely.-

Seeing as Sun Lan didn't seem too happy, Zhang Che revealed another shocking piece of news.

"I'm sorry, Mom, I lied to you. I wasn't participating in school activities over the past few days, but I entered the beast world-"

"What!?" Sun Lan cried out in dismay. "Xiaoche, how could you go into the beast world? It's too dangerous in there! What if something happened to you? How is Mommy supposed to continue living by herself?"

Although she was no beastmaster herself, she still had some knowledge regarding the beast worlds. She knew how dangerous it was in there, and after hearing that her son was in there for the past few days, her heart was immediately in disarray.

Even if her son was sitting in front of her in one piece at this moment, what if something untoward had happened to him? What would she do in the future?

Moreover, her son might have returned safely this time, but what about the next time? And the time after that?

This was something nobody could guarantee, not even those powerful beastmasters. There were many who went missing after entering the beast world, let alone Zhang Che, who'd just become a Tier One beastmaster!

After seeing the complete change in Sun Lan's expression, Zhang Che knew what she was worrying about. He couldn't help but console her with a slight smile,

"Don't worry. Mom. I know I'm weak. I was only hunting near the edge of the safe zone, killing some low-tier beasts. I didn't dare to venture out at all.

"Didn't I say I have some good news for you? It wasn't me becoming a beastmaster, but that I obtained some decent beast cards in the beast world. Your illness can be cured now!"

As he spoke, Zhang Che opened his personal terminal and navigated to his account balance. He brought it to Sun Lan and said, "Look, Mom. I earned almost a million Alliance dollars on this trip! We'll go to the hospital to buy the genetic restoration medicine in a few days. Your illness will surely be fully cured."

Looking at the long chain of numbers displayed on Zhang Che's personal terminal on his account balance, Sun Lan was taken aback, and had to confirm what she saw again. Her eyes reddened, and two trails of tears rolled down her cheeks.

She knew that although Zhang Che spoke about this in such a relaxed manner, and how safe this was, she knew that with his strength as a new beastmaster, only the heavens knows how many exotic beasts he hunted in the past few days to earn this much money!

Not only that, who knew how much danger he had to overcome to have accomplished this!

Looking at the increasingly less childish face of her son, Sun Lan felt inexplicably touched. Tears flowed as she smiled, "My Xiaoche has grown up…"

Zhang Che's eyes were slightly red, too, as he replied with a smile, "I've grown up, Mom. Not only am I able to earn money to cure your illness, I will even let you live a much better life in the future."

"Good, good, good. I trust that Xiaoche will surely be able to do just that. But you have to promise Mommy, that you must pay attention to your own safety. Mommy doesn't wish to see you end up like your father. Can you promise me that?"

"Don't worry, Mom. I still have to find you a beautiful daughter-in-law, and give birth to a bunch of cute grandchildren to let you enjoy your days."

Zhang Che nodded deeply, as he promised to himself inwardly, -For your sake, I will definitely become much, much stronger!-

Chapter 18: Chapter 018 – The Ambitions of Fusion Skill

[Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly]

Quality: Black Iron

Type: Original Combat Body

Characteristics: Able to Disperse Poison Powder with a Hallucinating Effect

Weakness: Fire Attribute Attacks

Potential: B Rank: 50% Chance of Breaking Through Current Level, 5% Chance of Breaking Through Current Quality. Chances Halved on Next Upgrade. Upgradable 4 Times

Cultivating Directions: …

Zhang Che was sitting on the chair by the bedside, a crude table in front of him with a stack of one-star black iron cards laid on it in a horizontal line. He was wearing an eager smile as he looked them over.

These one-star black iron Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly cards were his gains from today.

At first, he had suddenly saw a huge swarm of butterflies about the size of a palm-leaf fan with flowery patterns on them that made him shiver. Zhang Che was even frightened at the sight, afraid that this flying mob would be powerful. Even if he had four beasts at his command, it was impossible to handle them.

Even after he saw the garbage attributes of the Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterflies, he was still worried. That was because they were actually beasts that used poison attacks to cause hallucinations. Who knows if his beasts could withstand it?

Fortunately, the Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterflies were very low level and quality. Although their poison powder caused some troubles for his Fiery Scorpion and other beasts, they were still unable to avoid the fate of being hunted by Zhang Che's beasts.

Of course, Zhang Che was hiding a distance away during the entire process. He was at the limits of the distance where he could still effectively control his beasts, issuing orders remotely to his four beasts to kill all of the Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterflies.

The swarm of Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterflies numbered several dozen, and in the end, contributed a total of eighteen beast cards to Zhang Che!

According to Zhang Che's original plans, the Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly cards were supposed to be sold.

However, after considering the unique attack method of this beast, his heart was swayed into keeping them.

Although the Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly's strength was a little weak, he had the heaven-defying fusion skill!

The most important factor was the Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly's potential. They were the highest Zhang Che had seen thus far, at a terrifying B rank, which could be upgraded four times!

In other words, in terms of its level, as long as Zhang Che's fusion skill continued to advance, he could obtain a five-star mid-tier beast card in the end!

When it reached that level, would the Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly's hallucination-inducing attack still be weak?

The answer was, obviously not!

With such expectations in his heart, Zhang Che picked up two Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly cards from the table and activated the fusion skill. In the next moment, he saw the two beast cards being shrouded in a mysterious energy, suddenly turning into rays of light and quickly fusing into one.

In just the time it took for a few breaths, the light faded, leaving a brand new beast card in Zhang Che's palm.

[Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly]

Level: Two Star (Level 20)

Quality: Black Iron

Type: Original Combat Body

Characteristics: Able to Disperse Poison Powder with Strong Hallucinating Effect

Weakness: Fire Attribute Attacks

Potential: B Rank: 25% Chance of Breaking Through Current Level, 5% Chance of Breaking Through Current Quality. Chances Halved on Next Upgrade. (Level Upgradable 3 Times, Quality Upgradable 4 Times)

Cultivating Directions: …

Seeing as there were some changes on the beast card, Zhang Che felt some slight joy in his heart.

Sure enough, it works!

Compared to a one-star Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly, there was the additional word 'strong' on the two-star Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly's attributes. Obviously the effects of the hallucination-inducing powder had become more potent.

As long as he fused a five-star Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly in the future, the effects of its poison powder would definitely rise to an unimaginable level.

But what a pity; in order to advance the fusion skill to level 2, a lot more experience points were needed.

Looking at the fusion skill, it had become Level 1 (Experience 1/100).

-As expected, I still need to fuse 99 more times to increase its level. In other words, I still need 198 one-star or two-star cards at the very least.-

Such a number didn't seem like much, but still required a certain amount of time to accumulate that many beast cards.

The key was that it would only get much harder in order to further increase its level.

After all, a one-star beast was easy to kill, but the same couldn't be said for three-star beasts.

When the time came that a large amount of four-star beast cards were needed, the difficulty would shoot through the skies.

However, these were all matters to be taken into consideration in the future. Zhang Che continued fusing the remaining one-star Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly cards. In the end, he got a total of nine two-star black iron cards.

"Such a pity that the fusion skill could only raise the level of a beast card, and not its quality. Otherwise, with the superb potential of the Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly, it could be upgraded into a tier even higher than gold quality. How strong would that be? I don't even dare to imagine…"

A beast's strength was not only determined by its level. The more important factor was its quality.

From what Zhang Che currently knew, a beast's quality in ascending order was as follows: black iron, bronze, silver, gold…

As for higher tiers than gold, they were something Zhang Che had no idea about.

However, based on his current understanding, a one-star bronze beast's strength was comparable to a two-star black iron beast.

As for a one-star gold beast, its strength was even higher than a three-star bronze beast!

If it wasn't for the fact that a beast's strength would experience a great leap every three ranks, a one-star gold beast would be much stronger than a four-star black iron beast.

From this, one could see that the quality of a beast had a decisive influence on its strength.

Zhang Che's gaze was locked onto a beast card. Looking at the Cultivating Directions attribute, it was followed by a string of ellipsis. He couldn't help but think, -What does a string of dots mean? Since there is such an attribute, why doesn't it show the details of a beast's cultivating directions?-

Just as such thoughts entered Zhang Che's mind, the ellipsis after Cultivating Directions actually started fading away from his vision, and a string of words took its place.

Zhang Che first felt ecstatic, but when he saw the required materials, his eyes dimmed.

Ghost Grass, Yin Condensing Water, Spirit Clouding Mushroom……

Alright, Zhang Che had never heard of any of the materials listed there, let alone seen them.

Although humans had started venturing into the beast worlds over thirty years ago, and scientists and botanists had also gradually started researching the vegetation found in there, the plants belonged to a completely different system from Mercury. How hard was it to actually yield results from their research?

This was also why, although the occupation beast cultivator already existed, with restrictions on all fronts, there were very few beast cultivators who could raise the quality of a beast card.

With a success rate of 1%, one could already be counted an official beast cultivator. When their success rate reached 5%, they could be considered as slightly reputable beast cultivators.

After all, in order to become a beast cultivator, not only do they have to be well versed in the characteristics of many plants from beast worlds, they also need to know the attributes of most beasts to make an educated guess on the materials they needed to increase their quality!

Chapter 19: Chapter 019 – Destination – Southern Suburb Woods

Translator: mianbao Editor: Aelryinth

Edited by RED

"I'd better work hard to become a high-tier beastmaster. As for a beast cultivator, we'll see what happens in the future."

Zhang Che shook his head. He had no intentions of developing in the field of a beast cultivator for the time being. Although he could 'see' the materials needed to cultivate beasts, he had no idea what they were.

If he wished to differentiate the different materials, he had to learn everything from the beginning. The time and effort needed was definitely not little; it wasn't really worth it.

In the future, it was better to work towards increasing the level of fusion, so that he wouldn't have to worry about not having a good subdued beast to use when he became a mid-tier beastmaster.

"Hmm? It seems like fusion can be used on two-star cards, too!"

Looking at the nine two-star black iron cards on the table, Zhang Che suddenly realized that he could continue to fuse them. That was another few points of experience!

He immediately put his thoughts into action. Zhang Che picked up a pair of two-star beast cards and activated the fusion skill. In the next moment, the two beast cards in his hands immediately turned into a blur of light and fused into one, leaving only a black iron card with three hexagrams behind.

Looking at the three-star Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly card in his hand, there didn't seem to be any signs of happiness on Zhang Che's face.

This time, fusing the beast cards didn't yield him a single experience point!

"Could it be that beast cards that have already been fused won't give any more experience points? As expected, this system is truly strict. There is actually not a single loophole that I can exploit!"

Although the second fusing didn't yield any experience points, he still chose to fuse the remaining two-star cards, resulting in four three-star cards and a two-star card in the end.

Due to the first round of fusion resulting in an odd number of cards, there was a two-star card remaining that he couldn't fuse. Zhang Che wasn't feel sad about it.

When he advanced into a Tier Two beastmaster in the future, he could use this two-star Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly card.

With a hallucination-inducing poison attack, it would surely be very good support to have!

~~~~~~
The next day, Saturday morning…
A row of fierce-looking military vehicles were parked in the schoolyard of Qian Wei City Number Two Secondary School.
The military vehicles employed the latest technology. Their armor was mixed with light and tough exotic beast materials, increasing their defenses greatly. The body of the cars were fit with countless hook-like iron spikes, which could cause great harm to beasts that attacked the vehicle.
Similarly, their tires were mixed with the latest materials as well. Even rifle bullets were unable to penetrate them.
With such a fierce ride, even if they encountered a two-star silver-tier beast, it wouldn't be able to hurt the passengers inside within a short period of time, as long as the beasts didn't have any elemental attacks.
At this very moment, a messy group was standing behind each vehicle. They were the Year 3 students who had become beastmasters and owned a beast.
It was close to 8 AM. Most of the newbie beastmaster students had come to school early in the morning. Following their homeroom teacher's instructions, they gathered at the schoolyard. The moment the clock struck 8, they would move out to the training location.
In a group that consisted of Class 2 students, about twenty students including both sexes were lined up in two rows, whispering among themselves.
The little fatty, Liu Haowei1 scanned the members in his group and silently estimated inwardly, then whispered to Wu Junyu, who was in front of him doubtfully, "Mm? It seems that the beastmasters in our class have all arrived. Why hasn't Teacher Han had us board the vehicle?"
Before Wu Junyu could say a word, Huang Tielan who was in the girls row suddenly turned her head and glared at Liu Haowei. "Che, which eye of yours saw that everyone is here? My Zhang Xiaoche isn't here yet!"
Liu Weihao turned his head slightly and looked at Huang Tielan with a ridiculing gaze and said, "Hah, you're saying Zhang Che that fellow? I'm afraid he can't make it here."
Huang Tielan hated others talking bad about Zhang Che. She couldn't resist glaring at Liu Haowei hatefully and chided, "What do you mean by that!? Mind your words!"
Under the gathering eyes, Liu Haowei wasn't afraid of the fierce chick, Huang Tielan. He chuckled, "Hehe, you thought I wouldn't know that that kid Zhang Che got ahead of himself and went into the beast world? It's already been a few days, and there's still no news of him. I'm afraid you won't ever see him again!"
To his side, Wu Junyu chimed in, "Huang Tienan2, it's such a pity for your tender affections, but Zhang Che doesn't exist in this world any longer."
Huang Tielan was astonished, and her face turned furious. She was worrying about Zhang Che's safety over the past few days, and now she heard these two punks speaking viciously about him. She nearly lost control of herself and wanted to teach them both a lesson.
Just as she was to put her thoughts into action, she heard her homeroom teacher, Han Sheqing's voice from the side, "Its unbecoming of you to cause such a ruckus. Stand properly. We'll head out when everyone is here."
Huang Tielan felt a slight joy in her heart after hearing Han Sheqing's words. -So there are still people who have yet to arrive. Could it be that Zhang Che returned from the beast world?-
Standing in the line, Wu Junyu and Liu Haowei felt a little doubtful. The former couldn't help but ask, "Teacher Han, aren't all the beastmasters in our class here? Who else is there?"
Han Sheqing let out a faint smile, "I forgot to tell you guys a piece of good news. Zhang Che returned safely from the beast world yesterday, and he has his own beast now. So now we're waiting for him."
-What, that kid really returned from the beast world, and even has his own beast now!?-
Wu Junyu and Liu Haowei didn't dare to believe what they just heard.
But this came from Han Sheqing himself. It surely wouldn't be wrong.
-How is that possible?
-Zhang Che is only a damn pauper. Even if he became a beastmaster by luck, where did he find the money to buy equipment, and how was it possible for him to hunt the myriad species of beasts in the beast world, obtaining his own beast card?-
On the other hand, Huang Tielan's face was beaming with delight.
-So it turns out that my Zhang Xiaoche really has come back!
-Like I said, with the Fiery Scorpion I gave him, it was impossible for him to be unable to kill any beasts!
-But since he returned yesterday, why didn't he tell me?-
A complicated expression showed on the young woman's face.
As for the other beastmasters present from class 2, their faces were a sight to behold. None of them expected the mediocre Zhang Che to actually dare venture into the dangerous beast world to hunt beasts right after becoming a beastmaster by a stroke of luck. Their understanding of him was completely overturned in an instant.
While they were each having their respective thoughts, a familiar figure suddenly came running in from the school gates. The figure looked around for a short while and immediately ran towards the group of class 2 students.
"I'm sorry, Teacher Han. I was stuck in a traffic jam."
The heavens could bear witness to his words; Zhang Che was really stuck in a traffic jam earlier. He ran into a car accident on his way here, which caused a traffic disruption. He got off the bus and ran some distance before flagging down a taxi, reaching the school in the nick of time.
"Stand in line."
Han Sheqing nodded at Zhang Che, then walked towards a second lieutenant standing by the military vehicle. He turned around and waved to his class, "Everyone get on the bus. We're going to the Southern Suburb Woods!"
Translator Note:
1 Liu Haowei was introduced in Chapter 16 as Liu Weihao, but in this chapter, the author referred to him as Liu Haowei in the raws every time.
2: Wu Junyu called her Huang Tienan intentionally. He replaced the word Lan(兰/orchid) with Nan(男/man) to tease her manly stature, and the Tie(铁) in her name means metal/iron.
Chapter 20: Chapter 020 – This Doesn't Make Any Sense!
"Sit here, Zhang Xiaoche!"
With curiosity and excitement in their hearts, the group of boys and girls got on the military vehicle and looked for a seat.
Zhang Che swept his gaze across the vehicle, thinking of where to sit when he saw Huang Tielan sitting by the side waving at him, occupying two seats.
"Huang Tielan, please call me Zhang Che!"
Originally, Zhang Che didn't want to sit together with Huang Tielan. However, upon remembering the reason he was able to reap a huge profit in the beast world was all thanks to the beast card she gifted him, he could only embrace the ridiculing gazes of his classmates and sit down in the spot where Huang Tielan freed up.
"Alright, Zhang Xiaoche!" Huang Tielan smiled gleefully, not caring about Zhang Che's insistence.
Zhang Che was helpless about it and could only let her be. After sitting down, he fished out a beast card from his shirt pocket. It was the one-star silver Fiery Scorpion card. He handed it to her, thanking her sincerely, "Huang Tielan, it's all thanks to this card of yours that I returned successfully from the beast world and obtained my own beasts. Now, please take this card back. You can use it later at the southern suburbs."
Huang Tielan looked at the Fiery Scorpion card with a wronged expression, replying, "How can I take back something I gave to you? Why don't you present me with a beast card of similar strength in the future?"
Of course Zhang Che knew what she was thinking. He shook his head resolutely and said, "I'll definitely get you a decent beast card in the future as thanks, but please accept the Fiery Scorpion card. Otherwise, what are you going to use for the training later?"
Huang Tielan let out a crafty smile as a one-star silver card suddenly appeared between the tips of her fingers.
"Who said that I don't have another beast?"
Zhang Che was stunned. He looked at the one-star silver card in Huang Tielan's hand, unable to say a word for quite some time.
-Okay, us paupers really can't understand the ways of the rich…-
A one-star silver card costs 100 thousand Alliance dollars, at the very least. Let alone a high school student, even some Tier 2 or 3 beastmasters might not necessarily own a one-star silver card, and yet Huang Tielan was able to take out another one, even after giving him one!
He could only think that Huang Tielan's family really shouldn't be underestimated…
However, Zhang Che felt relieved immediately after. To be able to get the man outside the spatial gateway to prepare a backpack for him, this was obviously not something a commoner's child could do.
Zhang Che shook his head helplessly and said to Huang Tielan, "Fine. Take it as I'm borrowing the Fiery Scorpion from you. I'll definitely get you a better card in the future as thanks."
"That's more like it. We'll happily leave it at that!" Huang Tielan chuckled. Her eyes narrowed into a slit as she extended her chubby palm to swear their promises with a high-five.
Zhang Che blanked out for a moment, before slapping her palm unwillingly. He looked as if he was a damsel being threatened by a fierce man.
~~~~~~

The Southern Suburb Woods was located about ten km outside Qian Wei City to the south. Originally, there were several villages around here.

However, the exotic beasts from the disaster thirty-six years ago levelled these villages. The survivors all escaped into the city, and the area gradually turned into woodlands.

After the spatial gateways appeared, not only was there a horde of innumerable beasts, there was also an unknown energy gushing out from it, causing the vegetation to grow wildly. Almost all of the unpopulated wilderness became an unending forest.

According to the observations from the satellites, even the deserts on Mercury had grown large oases. In time to come, the deserts might possibly disappear completely.

In a way, the mysterious spatial gateways benefited Mercury. At the very least, the poor environment from the past had recovered quickly.

——

A fleet of military vehicles travelled along an abandoned road, arriving at the Southern Suburb Woods, and stopped at a spacious flat ground.

There was a whole team of fully geared military personnel waiting for their arrival. After the military vehicles reached their destination, the lieutenants that rode with the vehicles led their respective groups of students to gather as a whole. Following that, they met up with a small team of military personnel, who proceeded to explain the disciplinary rules and regulations. Then, they separated back into smaller groups and headed into the woods in different directions.

"Woah, it's just as written in the books. The plants really are really growing madly!" a student exclaimed in shock, looking at the dense forest before him. He continued, "I remember my father mentioning before that he came here in the past, and there was farmland everywhere, without any trees."

After the coming of the new age, people rarely went to the suburbs. The youngsters had no inkling of what it used to look like. They only heard some vague descriptions of the suburbs from the adults.

Now that they saw the vastly different scenery for themselves, they couldn't help but exclaim in shock.

Although the outdoor training was supposed to train the students' actual combat proficiency, in order to avoid any mishaps, the military had combed through the area. The powerful beasts were all disposed of.

Within a radius of several dozen kilometers, only some weak beasts were left alive for the students to practice on.

Even so, the military assigned a small team of fully geared soldiers to every class, and the leading lieutenants were all Tier Three beastmasters. Their beasts alone would be sufficient to handle any unexpected incidents.

Not long after Class Two set off, the leading second lieutenant suddenly stopped in place and turned around to the students, saying, "Alright, everyone, we might encounter exotic beasts after we enter the area. Summon your respective beasts now. I don't want you to get all flustered when the time comes."

The boys and girls grew excited. The moment had finally arrived!

Thus, over twenty students called forth the beast cards from their spiritual seas one after another. At least one card appeared in each student's hand.

Wu Junyu summoned his beast card by his side as he glanced over in Zhang Che's direction, curious about what quality of a beast card this fellow had obtained in the beast world.

He was quite far away from Zhang Che during their ride and missed out on what happened between them. At this moment, he was thinking, -Even if this fellow returned from the beast world by some stroke of luck, he wouldn't have gotten anything amazing, right?

-Mm, it'd be pretty good for him if he got a black iron quality beast card. There's no way he'll get anything better than my bronze quality Xiaohei!-

However, the smile on Wu Junyu's face grew stiff in the next moment.

He saw the emotionless Zhang Che holding one… two bronze beast cards in his hand.

"How is this possible?! It doesn't make any sense!"

Wu Junyu's lower jaw nearly dropped to the ground, looking at Zhang Che's hands incredulously.

-How could this fellow possibly have two bronze quality beast cards!?-

If Wu Junyu were to find out that Zhang Che was actually hiding his cards and didn't take out the silver quality Fiery Scorpion, who knew what he'd think then?

"Impossible. How did he manage to obtain two bronze cards?"

Wu Junyu stared wide-eyed, as if he were seeing ghost. Then, he heard Liu Haowei's similarly perplexed hushed exclamation from the side.

The two of them exchanged looks with one another and saw the astonishment in their eyes.

It was not long ago that Zhang Che was still trash who couldn't even pass the beastmaster aptitude test. In only the short span of a few days, he first passed the aptitude test in an unbelievably short amount of time, and now he had even returned safely from the beast world, obtaining two bronze quality cards in the process.

It could be said that the changes in Zhang Che over these few short days were akin to the world being turned upside down.

Liu Haowei glanced at Zhang Che, then shifted his gaze back to the bronze card in his own hands. He was feeling a lot of mixed emotions in his heart right now.

A freaking trash was actually able to hunt two bronze cards for himself in the beast world, while he himself only got one bronze card by relying on his family? Must there be such a huge difference between two people?

"Oh, right, do you reckon that brat's cards were given to him by Huang Tienan? I don't believe that he was able to hunt for his own cards in the beast world," Liu Haowei whispered to Wu Junyu.

The latter blinked his eyes several times before coming to a realization, saying, "Right! Who doesn't know that Huang Tielan likes that brat? Those two cards must be her gifts to Zhang Che."

The more Wu Junyu thought about it, the more he felt that this was the case. His imagination went on a tangent as he continued, "Mm. My guess is this brat most probably hid within the safe zone the entire duration he was in the beast world and didn't dare to go out at all."

The two youngsters seemed as if they discovered the secrets of the heavens. They exchanged glances and smiled at one another, feeling relieved.

"Alright, now summon your beasts and be on your guard. From now on, we could be attacked by beasts at any moment," the lieutenant repeated.

The young men and women didn't dare to lower their guards at all. Every one of their cards transformed into an array of different beasts, guarding at their master's sides.

In the blink of an eye, a bunch of different animals and insects appeared around them, as if the animals of from zoo had made a collective breakout.

Zhang Che wasn't interested in checking out the attributes of these beasts, which consisted of mainly black iron and bronze quality cards. Instead, he focused his gaze on the beast Huang Tielan summoned; a huge centipede!

This centipede was about two meters long. It has a golden back, purple legs, and a scarlet head section. Its pair of poisonous mandibles was shining a chill-inducing mix of blue and purple light.

[Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede]

Level: One Star (Level 9)

Cultivating Directions: …

This Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede was a silver-tier beast, indeed. The moment it appeared, the surrounding students' beasts were all frightened and backed off to the side.

On the other hand, Zhang Che couldn't help but grimace at the sight of it.

Huang Tielan's tastes were so very unique!

She gifted him the Fiery Scorpion, and along with this Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede, they were both poison types! It truly left one at a loss for words…

-Shouldn't girls like those furry little animals?-

Ugh… Zhang Che thought back about how Huang Tielan was usually addressed as "Tienan" by the others behind her back in class. With such interests, it didn't seem so weird any more.

Zhang Che shifted his gaze to the two calf-sized ash green wolves by his side, thinking to himself, -My tastes are more normal. There's no way poisonous insects and the likes are more pleasing to the eyes than ferocious beasts.-

The two bronze-quality Wind Shadow Wolves were very flashy, indeed. They drew everyone's attention, envious of the fact that Zhang Che was actually able to own two identical bronze-quality beasts.

Seeing everyone had summoned their beasts, the second lieutenant nodded slightly and said, "Alright, we'll now enter the woods ahead of us. Be on alert and look out for your safety."

Hualala, the group immediately started moving. A group of boys and girls entered the woods with their own beasts, harboring anticipation and some fear of the unknown.

The team advanced for less than a hundred meters when they suddenly heard the roar of a beast. Every one looked toward where the sound came from, and saw Wu Junyu's subdued beast, a burly black bear, covering its butt embarrassedly, jumping off the ground.

Zhang Che focused his gaze in that direction, and saw this bronze quality beast known as the Black Wind Beast was bleeding from its butt. It had obviously suffered an unexpected attack.

Suffering a sneak attack on its butt; one could only wonder how much it hurt.

The class of students forcefully endured their impulse to laugh out loud as they saw the Black Wind Beast jumping up and down. Those who were easily amused were red from holding back their laughter.

"Everyone spread out, pay attention to the ground!"

The second lieutenant was unlike the ignorant youngsters. His expression changed slightly after realizing the situation and yelled out to the group.

The ground?

Could it be that Wu Junyu's beast was attacked by an exotic beast that dug its way out from underground?

Everyone looked over once more, and as expected, they saw an inconspicuous hole about the size of a bowl near a patch of grass not far away from Wu Junyu.

Their faces changed one after another, looking down frantically, afraid that some unknown beast would emerge from the ground to attack them.

The various beasts also received orders from their respective masters and went on full alert.

"Ah, over here!" someone from the crowd cried out suddenly.

In the grass to Huang Tielan's side, an ugly, elliptical head burrowed out from the ground and tried to pounce onto her. However, the alert Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede guarding by her side discovered it and its sword-like limbs quickly moved. The Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede who made the second move actually reached its target first and directly pounced onto the body underneath that ugly head.

What fast reactions! It truly was a silver-tier beast!

The beast that crawled out from the ground resembled a snake, yet it wasn't exactly a snake. That ugly head was connected to a round, slippery body. There weren't any eyes, ears or nose on the head, only a wide-open round mouth. A few rows of thin, shredder-like teeth could be vaguely seen in its mouth, trying its best to bite onto the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede on it.

Alas, the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede was a silver-tier beast. It possessed an extremely powerful body, and at this moment its countless sword-like legs were stabbed into the beast's body. It was unable to struggle free.

As for this beast's teeth, although they looked savage, they were unable to do a thing to the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede's tough carapace.

Panicking, the beast's mostly underground body suddenly contracted itself in an attempt to get back into the earth to escape.

However, the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede had already spread its poisonous mandibles, and pincered them into the beast's head, injecting its poison madly into it.

The exotic beast's struggles quickly grew weaker. Shortly afterwards, the exposed section of its body finally fell weakly on the grass.

Chapter 22: Chapter 022 – A Beastmaster's First Lesson

[Hidden Sandworm]

Level: Two Star (Level 15)

Quality: Black Iron

Characteristics: Skilful at Burrowing, Burrows Silently, Hard to Guard Against

Weakness: Unvaried Attack Pattern, Weak Defense

Potential: E Rank: 25% Chance of Breaking Through Current Level, 2.5% Chance of Breaking Through Current Quality. Upgradable 1 Time

Cultivating Directions: No Value In Cultivating

Looking at the exotic beast's attributes, Zhang Che couldn't help but shake his head. It was no wonder the Hidden Sandworm was unable to retaliate against the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede. It turned out that it was only a black iron-tier beast. Even though its level was at two stars, its strength was lower than a one-star bronze quality beast.

In the end, the Hidden Sandworm turned completely motionless after a short while.

The Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede loosened its limbs that were coiled around the Hidden Sandworm and crawled around Huang Tielan triumphantly, waving its mandibles about. It looked like it was asking for a reward.

Huang Tielan was very pleased. She extended her hand and patted the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede's head, praising it with a smile, "My Xiaohong is the best. Go on!"

After getting Huang Tielan's approval, the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede immediately crawled back to the Hidden Sandworm's corpse and began chomping on it.

This little thing actually waited for its master's approval before feasting on its prey. One could see how well-trained it was.

Zhang Che's eyes narrowed, feeling curious about Huang Tielan's family. Exactly what kind of family is she a part of, to have such a powerful beast?

With the threat eliminated, the youngsters started expressing their amazement.

"Woah, Huang Tielan's beast is so powerful! The exotic beast was killed without being able to do a thing!"

"That's right. Hers is a silver quality beast! How could ordinary trash compare to it?"

"Hehe, are you talking about your own beast?"

Other than battling, a subdued beast's level could be raised by consuming the flesh and blood of other exotic beasts.

Of course, in the beast world, they would turn into a streak of light and disappear without leaving a corpse. However, before they completely disappeared, a fraction of the light could be consumed by the subdued beast, and the benefits of that were not much different from physically consuming them.

Most subdued beasts preferred to actually enjoy the flesh and meat of the exotic beasts, however.

At this moment, the tamed beasts by their respective masters' sides were looking longingly in the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede's direction. Every one of them wanted to get a piece of the pie, but they were afraid of the latter's strength and didn't dare to come forward.

Wu Junyu's Black Wind Beast suffered a sneak attack earlier. Now that the Hidden Sandworm was killed, it seemed very eager. It probably wanted to go vent out some of its frustrations on the corpse.

"Erm, Huang Tielan, can my beast get a bite of the exotic beast's flesh?" As its master, Wu Junyu understood his beast's desire.

He knew that without any beast card restoration solution, the best way for his beast to recover was to eat a sumptuous meal. Thus, even though he wasn't on good terms with Huang Tielan, he put his pride aside and asked for the favor.

Huang Tielan's eyes shifted slightly, then she smiled and nodded, "No problem. This worm is so long; my Xiaohong can't possibly finish it by itself. Let your beast come over and eat some too."

Wu Junyu was immediately wild with joy and commanded, "Go, Xiaohei!"

That dumb black bear's eyes beamed with light. It immediately ran to the Hidden Sandworm's corpse, but it was still weary of the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede and avoided it. The black bear aimed at the parts that were nearer to the hole and started tearing at its flesh.

Seeing this, the rest of the students were feeling tempted as well.

There was still a huge chunk of the Hidden Sandworm's corpse hidden underground. If they dragged it out, it was probably enough for everyone's beast to feast on.

However, before a second person could open their mouth, Wu Junyu's black bear suddenly stopped moving. Its huge figure stiffened and fell onto the ground.

Wu Junyu was shocked. He cried out, "Xiaohei, what happened to you?"

This bronze quality Black Wind Beast was prepared for him by his family, spending tens of thousand dollars to buy it. If it were to die here for some unknown reasons, that'd truly be an injustice.

Just as Wu Junyu was going to rush up to check on it, the second lieutenant by the side spoke up, "Don't worry. Your beast was only poisoned. Return it to your spiritual sea and it will recover in a few hours."

Mmm, the Hidden Sandworm was injected with quite an amount of poison by the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede earlier. It would be a wonder if the Black Wind Beast wasn't poisoned after devouring its flesh.

Wu Junyu finally understood what happened and felt relieved after hearing Lieutenant Qi's explanation. All was good if his beast is going to be fine.

However, he felt a little discontented towards Lieutenant Qi immediately after. Since you knew it would turn out this way, why didn't you remind me earlier?

Of course, he didn't dare to express his feelings out loud.

Even so, Lieutenant Qi's bright eyes swept across Wu Junyu's face and seemed to know what he was thinking. He said in a ridiculing tone, "What, are you blaming me for not reminding you?"

Wu Junyu hurriedly averted his gaze and claimed profusely, "I don't dare to."

Hehe, he was a greenhorn, indeed. He didn't know how to conceal his thoughts at all. 'Don't dare to', that means he still resented him inwardly, but he didn't dare voice it out.

The Lieutenant didn't seem to care, however. The faint smile on his face suddenly disappeared and he swept his gaze across the group of students. He said indifferently, "This is my first lesson to all of you."

Seeing everyone was looking his way, Second Lieutenant Qi continued, "I know that you learned from the books that a subdued beast can strengthen itself via devouring an exotic beast's flesh and blood. If it managed to consume a mid or high-tier beast, there is even a chance for it to increase its current level, advancing into a higher star rank. However…" Lieutenant Qi's expression finally turned strict.

"However, not all exotic beast's flesh and blood is safe for consumption. For example, this Hidden Sandworm from before. Didn't you see that it was killed by this girl's beast using poison?

"The reason why her centipede beast was able to enjoy the sandworm's flesh was because the poison originated from it. Naturally it wouldn't be affected. However, can't you guys use your brains a little? You actually wanted to let your own beasts take a bite as well!

"Remember this. If you wish to continue surviving from beast battles in the future, you have to be more observant, and think more!"

The students suddenly came to a realization and lowered their heads in shame.

Such was the case for Wu Junyu especially. It could be said that he made a big fool of himself in front of everyone. At this moment, his fair face was bright red from shame, wishing that he could hide in a hole.

Seeing as the group was in low spirits, Lieutenant Qi didn't wish to further crush these newbies' confidence. He clapped his hands and said, "Alright, this is your first actual combat training, after all. It's understandable that you aren't familiar with some common knowledge. The combat training is precisely to train you up on your basics. Just remember to not commit the same mistakes."

After which, the group continued advancing into the woods, but the atmosphere was now vastly different than before.

In the beginning, many of the students were in a curious, playful mood. From then on, their mindsets were properly adjusted, wanting to learn many more things from this outdoor training.

Chapter 23: Chapter 023 – Sudden Change

Translator: mianbao Editor: Aelryinth

Edited by RED

The trees were lush and green, the scorching hot sun hanging high up in the sky.

The beastmasters in Year 3 Class 2 had just received Lieutenant Qi's teachings, and they were more serious and acted more prudently. Each of them directed their own beasts to move cautiously forward.

Every time there was any disturbance, they would immediately stop in place and observe carefully around them to confirm there was no danger. Not only that, they would also command their beasts to continue scouting ahead.

On the other hand, due to his experience of hunting in the beast world, and knowing that the stronger exotic beasts have been cleared out, Zhang Che was advancing leisurely, as if he was taking a stroll.

Of course, it would be even better if Huang Tielan wasn't following closely by his side.

Perhaps due to her owning a silver-tier beast, Huang Tielan was acting very relaxed as well. She followed Zhang Che's pace closely, whispering to him, "Zhang Xiaoche, why didn't you bring out the Fiery Scorpion?"

Actually, Zhang Che didn't have any ill feelings towards Huang Tielan. On the contrary, it was all thanks to the Fiery Scorpion she gave him that his trip to the beast world went so smoothly, allowing him to earn a pretty sum.

However, all youngsters are very superficial!

Zhang Che really couldn't bring himself to like a meaty chick who was 180cm tall and weighed 80 kg.

"Please, I'm only a Tier One beastmaster and can only use two beasts at a time, alright?" Zhang Che replied helplessly.

As for the matter of her always addressing him as Zhang Xiaoche, Zhang Che was already immune to it. -Just call me whatever you want.-

"Aiya, you're acting dumb again!" Huang Tielan said coyly, stamping her feet. "Can't you replace one of your wolves with the Fiery Scorpion?"

Before Zhang Che could reply, Huang Tielan giggled, "Of course, I know Zhang Xiaoche wants to hide his strength, right? But don't you know how disgusting Wu Junyu and Liu Weihao are? They kept talking bad about you behind your back previously. If I were you, I would surely bring out the Fiery Scorpion to give them a nice slap in the face."

Oh, this chick's hobby is so unique; she actually likes acting dumb and slapping others in the face!

Zhang Che turned to look at Huang Tielan and said evenly, "Am I such a crude person? Moreover, you gave me the Fiery Scorpion. It's inappropriate to show off with it."

Huang Tielan's eyes immediately turned into stars as she nodded profusely, saying, "Right, right, right. That's my gift to you. Of course it can't be used to do such shallow things."

A streak of black lines appeared on Zhang Che's forehead, lamenting inwardly, -Tienan, you've truly misunderstood me. I only meant to say that I don't want to rely on others to put on a facade. If it was a beast card I hunted for myself, I'll definitely take it out without any hesitation to enjoy the look on their faces.-

"Xiaohei!" Suddenly, Wu Junyu's half-frightened, half-aching cry rang out from the group.

Everyone turned their heads to look in his direction. When they saw what happened, everyone sucked in a breath of cold air.

On Wu Junyu's side, a colorful spider about the size of a millstone was half concealed in the bushes, its chelicerae that were as sharp as blades were stabbed deep into the Black Wind Beast's body.

The Black Wind Beast was a one-star bronze-quality beast, yet it couldn't retaliate and was captured by that horrifying spider just like that. It went to show how powerful this spider is.

Seeing his beast captured, Wu Junyu was obviously panicking.

He saw the spider peeking out of the bushes earlier, and thought that it was an easy target to bully. Thus, he ordered his Black Wind Beast to go test the waters. Who would've thought that it would be defeated in just a single exchange?

Due to his panic, Wu Junyu even forgot to recall his beast immediately, and now he could only watch as his beast rapidly entered a near-death state.

Although a beastmaster could recall their beast at anytime within a certain distance, the same did not apply if the beast's origin was damaged in combat. They could only watch as their beast slowly headed towards death.

Lieutenant Qi's pupils constricted slightly when he suddenly saw the Five-Colored Poison Spider. His expression changed greatly and yelled out to the group, "Everyone be careful, this spider is very powerful!"

The students' expressions grew uglier immediately, and every one of them took several steps back involuntarily.

Only Wu Junyi was still looking at his beast regretfully, shouting incoherently, "My Xiaohei… What should I do? I can't recall it! Help me, Officer Qi! Save my Xiaohei!"

At this moment, Lieutenant Qi was dashing over from the front of the group, yelling as he ran, "Quickly back off if you don't wish to die! This spider is very dangerous!"

At this time, the Black Wind Beast suddenly turned into a streak of light and dissipated.

The Five-Colored Poison Spider was stunned for a moment, not understanding why its prey suddenly disappeared. After which, it saw Wu Junyu spacing out a short distance away and sped over towards him at lightning speed.

Zhang Che's pupils narrowed slightly, aghast at the fact that the spider was actually so powerful!

[Five-Colored Poison Spider]

It was actually a three-star bronze-quality beast! It was no wonder it managed to kill off Wu Junyu's beast in a single move. There was too much of a difference in strength between the two!

Furthermore, this kind of beast that utilized poison attacks were usually harder to deal with.

-However, it seems like many exotic beasts were weak to fire attacks. I should really get myself a beast that uses fire attacks in the future if the opportunity arises.-

On the other front, Wu Junyu was feeling the pain from his beast's death. He was nearly scared silly when he saw the horrifying Five Colored Poison Spider pouncing in his direction.

"Help!"

Fortunately, Wu Junyu didn't really turn dumb. He cried out loud in a fit of fear, turning to run in the group's direction.

It wasn't that he was purposely trying to implicate the others, but it was human nature to run towards their own species to seek safety when in danger.

"What the heck are you doing, Wu Junyu?! Don't drag us down with you if you wish to die!"

Coincidentally, the one closest to Wu Junyu was the little fatty, Liu Haowei. After witnessing Wu Junyu's beast being killed by that Five-Colored Poison Spider effortlessly, he was already retreating. Now that he saw Wu Junyu running straight in his direction, he couldn't help but feel both shocked and angry.

With his mix of emotions, he didn't have the time to care about his beast that was by his side as well, and he turned tail to run, too, hoping that Wu Junyu wouldn't run past him.

The students behind were similarly shocked too, and the group soon plunged into chaos. Some of the timid girls even screamed out loud.

Just as Wu Junyu was running for his life, feeling the sound of wind behind him getting increasingly closer,Lieutenant Qi, who was originally at the front of the group, rushed back to him in the nick of time.

He spread his palm firmly. A four-star black iron card turned into a streak of light and shot out from his hand.

Chapter 24: Chapter 024 – This Is What Beastmasters Should Be Like

Translator: mianbao Editor: Aelryinth

Edited by RED

That terrifying Five-Colored Poison Spider was now directly behind Wu Junyu. It suddenly extended its chelicerae forward, mere moments away from penetrating Wu Junyu's back.

At this moment, Lieutenant Qi finally arrived. The four-star black iron-quality card in his hand turned into a ray of light and flew towards the Five-Colored Poison Spider.

The Five-Colored Poison Spider stopped its action abruptly, seemingly sensing a huge danger. It looked at the ray of light flying in its direction cautiously, scrambling backwards involuntarily.

The ray of light flashed brightly. A mutated rooster several times larger than normal suddenly appeared before everyone's eyes. Its round eyes shone brightly, staring at the Five-Colored Poison Spider hostilely.

This rooster-like subdued beast was slightly above a meter tall, without a comb on its head. Its beak was long and sharp, with a silvery twinkle. Its tail had a bunch of purple-gold feather about half a meter long, looking quite beautiful.

Of course, this beast didn't just look valiant and formidable, as its strength wasn't low, either!

[Eagle-Beak Pheasant]

Level: Four Star (Level 38)

Quality: Black Iron

Type: Original Combat Body

Characteristics: Long and Sharp Beak, Good at Pounce Attacks

Weakness: Poison Attacks

Potential: D Rank: 25% Chance of Breaking Through Current Level, 2.5% Chance of Breaking Through Current Quality. Chances Halved on Next Upgrade. Upgradable 2 Times

Cultivating Directions: …

A four-star beast! This was already in the ranks of a mid-tier beast! Although it was among the lowest of the mid-tier beasts, they shouldn't be underestimated, either. Generally, they were only slightly weaker than a three-star silver-quality beast!

The Lieutenant being able to employ a four-star beast meant he was undoubtedly a Tier Four beastmaster, too. His strength was truly extraordinary!

However, after seeing the weakness attribute of the Eagle-Beak Pheasant, Zhang Che couldn't help but feel his heart tighten.

This freaking guy's weakness was poison attacks, while the Five-Colored Poison Spider just so happened to use poison attacks!

Would this mid-tier beast meet with an unexpected failure and end up getting killed by theFive-Colored Poison Spider?

After the Eagle-Beak Pheasant appeared, it didn't pounce on the Five-Colored Poison Spider immediately. Instead, it spread out its wings suddenly and fluffed its neck feathers out, ready to attack at anytime.

TheFive-Colored Poison Spider seemed to know that its opponent wasn't weak, as well. Its legs moved slowly, swaying its body slightly without any recognizable pattern, acting cautiously.

-I don't know if they will break out in a fight. I hope the Five-Colored Poison Spider would just back off.-

As Zhang Che thought of that, he and the others realized, much to their surprise, that Lieutenant Qi didn't pause for a moment, and continued running forward. At the same time, he took out another beast card. It flashed, turning into a long and narrow bronze sword.

It was actually a weapons-type beast card!

Everyone was stunned after witnessing this.

It was a weapon-type beast card of the legends! It was said that they were at least twice as rare as defensive-type beast card, and here it was, in the hands of a second lieutenant!

This showed that the military personnel who were committed to the frontlines against the beast world all year long gained a lot of good stuff.

With the blade in his hand, Lieutenant Qi seemed like a different person. The aura he gave off had an oppressive feeling to it.

Zhang Che's eyes lit up as he watched, thinking, -It's said that when beastmasters advance in tiers, their physical condition will improve with the increase of absorbed soul force. It seems like that is indeed the case.

-Lieutenant Qi barely stepped through the doors of a mid-tier beastmaster recently, and yet the aura he gives off could cause such an oppressive feeling to others. What about those legendary high-tier beastmasters?-

On the battlefront, the Eagle-Beak Pheasant was originally observing its opponent, hoping to find the Five-Colored Poison Spider's weakness before launching a fierce attack. When it saw its master rushing forward with such speed, it suddenly let out a clear cry and charged forward.

The teacher and students watching by the side were even surprised to see the earth being kicked up where the Eagle-Beak Pheasant ran past.

A four-star beast was actually so strong!

Seeing the Eagle-Beak Pheasant made its move, the Five-Colored Poison Spider suddenly let out a 'ji' cry and quickly dodged aside, subtly guarding its front with its chelicerae, ready to engage in close combat at any moment.

The Eagle-Beak Pheasant was very fast. Even though the Five-Colored Poison Spider dodged intentionally, the former was able to quickly adjust its direction. Its long and sharp beak suddenly pushing forward, pecking at the spider's body.

Of course, the Five-Colored Poison Spider wouldn't be struck so easily. Its body raised up suddenly, and used its tough abdominal carapace to receive the Eagle-Beak Pheasant's peck, causing a dull 'dok' sound to go off.

At the same time, the Five-Colored Poison Spider's chelicerae shot out at lightning speed, snapping them towards the Eagle-Beak Pheasant's head.

The pheasant obviously had lots of combat experience under its belt. Seeing its attack missed, its wings quickly beat furiously to fly several steps backwards, avoiding the Five-Colored Poison Spider's counterattack.

In their short exchange, theFive-Colored Poison Spider and Eagle-Beak Pheasant were actually evenly matched.

The students present expanded their horizons, thinking to themselves that their beasts wouldn't be able to dodge such attacks…

"Ha!"

After the Eagle-Beak Pheasant missed its attack, Lieutenant Qi was already there. He let out a cry and raised his blade up high with both hands, slashing down fiercely at the middle, aiming right at the Five-Colored Poison Spider's head.

Everyone seemed to see a flash of lightning streak across as Second Lieutenant Qi's blade struck theFive-Colored Poison Spider's back, leaving a mark about half an inch deep, nearly penetrating it.

Ji!

TheFive-Colored Poison Spider let out a pained cry. It snapped out its chelicerae forward in quick succession, avoiding Lieutenant Qi, who was trying to get another hit in, and quickly moved backwards.

"Go Officer Qi!"

"Mighty Officer Qi!"

Seeing as Lieutenant Qi actually took the upper hand, the students were no longer afraid and started cheering for him excitedly.

However, Lieutenant Qi knew that the Five-Colored Poison Spider wasn't that easy to deal with. Just as he was about to follow up his attack, he saw the retreating Five-Colored Poison Spider shooting out a mass of white colored light from its abdomen.

Lieutenant Qi was shocked. He swung his blade horizontally, and felt as if he had hit a mass of cotton. Upon taking a closer look, it turned out that half of his blade was wrapped in white spider silk.

Seeing its surprise attack had worked, the Five-Colored Poison Spider advanced instead of continuing its retreat, brandishing its chelicerae as it pounced towards Lieutenant Qi.

In just the blink of an eye, the attacking and defending sides switched!

However, Lieutenant Qi didn't panic in the slightest during this crucial moment. He suddenly sidestepped to the Five-Colored Poison Spider's side, turning his slash into a thrust, and stabbed his blade into a gap in the spider's abdomen.

Lieutenant Qi was not greedy after succeeding in his strike, either. He went with the momentum of his attack and opened a long wound on the Five-Colored Poison Spider's body with a horizontal slice, and retreated immediately.

The Five-Colored Poison Spider let out sharp cries after suffering such a severe wound. Its body suddenly turned about, its legs raising a cloud of earth while simultaneously cutting the bushes by its sides into shreds.

Right at this moment, Lieutenant Qi's beast, the Eagle-Beak Pheasant, flapped its wings and lifted itself off the ground, pouncing onto the Five-Colored Poison Spider's back. It pecked down rapidly with its long, sharp beak, reducing the Five-Colored Poison Spider's head to a mess.

Under the human and beast's coordination, the three-star bronze-quality beast, the Five-Colored Poison Spider, perished just like that.

Zhang Che's blood was pumping excitedly watching this. This is how strong a beastmaster is!

Chapter 25: Chapter 025 – Spider Swarm

Translator: mianbao Editor: Aelryinth

Edited by RED

Looking at the strength displayed by the Five-Colored Poison Spider, Zhang Che estimated that he didn't have much chance at victory even if his Fiery Scorpion went up. After all, the poison spider could spit out spider silk. Its overall combat ability was slightly higher than a one-star silver-tier beast…

Even so, Lieutenant Qi could go toe-to-toe against the Five-Colored Poison Spider using only a blade-type beast card and not any other beasts. Not only that, he still held a slight advantage over it. It went to show how strong he was.

With his beast in the picture, the three-star bronze-quality Five-Colored Poison Spider was killed after exchanging a few moves. It truly got one's heart pumping to witness this.

It turns out that a beastmaster could be this strong!

And that was without relying on any beasts, owning such powerful combat strength!

No, the blade in Lieutenant Qi's hands was also a beast!

Zhang Che suddenly thought of the situation he witnessed before and focused his gaze, looking towards the long blade in Lieutenant Qi's hands.

[Giant Horned Rhinoceros Beetle]

Type: Weapon Type

Characteristics: Sharp, Tough, Ideal For Penetrating Armor

Weakness: Corrosive Fluid

Cultivating Directions: …

"Si…"

Zhang Che couldn't help but suck in a breath of cold air. It was no wonder Lieutenant Qi could penetrate the Five-Colored Poison Spider's carapace with one slash. The attributes of this blade beast card were very decent.

In terms of pricing, this weapon-type beast card could sell for at least two million Alliance dollars!

From the looks of it, Lieutenant Qi's high combat power was mainly due to him relying on this blade's attributes.

Of course, Lieutenant Qi himself was not weak. If it were any ordinary person, even if they had a powerful weapon, they wouldn't have been able to hurt the three-star bronze-quality Five-Colored Poison Spider.

"Officer Qi is so strong, he actually killed such a powerful beast!"

"Woah, I really couldn't tell that Officer Qi was actually so powerful!"

After seeing Lieutenant Qi successfully killing such a seemingly powerful Five-Colored Poison Spider, the group of boys and girls all looked at him, admiration growing in their hearts.

If it wasn't for Lieutenant Qi coming to their rescue in the nick of time, at the very least, Wu Junyu wouldn't have escaped death and would have become the Five-Colored Poison Spider's food.

Moreover, in this world, the strong were the ones who are most worthy of respect. Some famous high-tier beastmasters had even more influence than those pretty boys or girls.

After Lieutenant Qi killed the Five-Colored Poison Spider, he first instructed the others to stop advancing for now and remain vigilant, then used his blade to dissect the Five-Colored Poison Spider's corpse.

The materials found on a three-star bronze-quality beast were very precious, worth a hundred thousand dollars at the very least.

Lieutenant Qi's movements were very fluid and practiced, displaying the fact that he had done this countless times. In just a short while, the Five-Colored Poison Spider's carapace, chelicerae, limbs, and poison gland were cut off, and stacked into a small pile.

After doing all this, he turned to the others and waved at them, saying, "Alright, let your subdued beasts come and have a meal. The flesh and blood of a three-star bronze-quality beast has a good effect on your beasts' growth."

The group of students immediately went wild with joy and hurriedly rushed up to the front with their respective beasts, afraid to lose out to the others, wanting to gain the most benefit out of this.

After all, increasing a subdued beast's level was something very difficult to achieve. Consuming the flesh and blood of a higher-level beast was much more effective than fighting and training. Naturally, no one was going to give up on such a rare opportunity.

"Wait!" Lieutenant Qi shouted at the students with a furrowed brow. He said with a low voice, "Look at yourselves. There's not one bit of discipline in you. If the lot of you were my subordinates, only the heavens know how many times you'd get punished by me in a day."

The huge wave of beasts suddenly halted in place, and the youngsters revealed embarrassed looks.

Lieutenant Qi swept his gaze across them and let out a sigh. He waved his hand, saying, "Don't be anxious. Wait for your turn."

He thought to himself that they were only a group of students, after all. He couldn't possibly treat them like they were his subordinates, and expect too much out of them.

Although the Five-Colored Poison Spider was huge for a spider, it was only as big as a millstone. After Lieutenant Qi cut off the usable materials off the corpse, there wasn't much flesh remaining. Class 2 had a total of 26 preparatory beastmasters, and amounting to over thirty beasts. Each of them could only get a small piece of the corpse.

Thus, the Five-Colored Poison Spider's corpse was soon fully distributed.

As for Lieutenant Qi's beasts, naturally they wouldn't bother with the flesh of a mere three-star exotic beast.

No matter what type of a beast it was, they could transform into their original forms to enjoy the flesh of other exotic beasts. However, only original combat form-types possessed any kind of combat strength in their original forms.

Seeing their own beasts got a share of the trophy, the students were looking forward much more to what was coming next. They looked at Lieutenant Qi, waiting for his next instructions to continue on their trip.

However, just at this moment,Lieutenant Qi's face suddenly changed. He replied sternly to his earpiece, "Roger. Understood!"

What was going on? Was there an unforeseen event?

While the group was curious about what happened,Lieutenant Qi looked at them with a serious gaze and said, "There's bad news. I just received notice that a Five-Colored Poison Spider nest was discovered in the woods, and there's a huge amount of them swarming out. Today's outdoor training ends here!"

He paused for a moment, then pointed in the direction they came from and yelled, "Now, I command all of you to return immediately! Get back to the ad hoc camp as soon as possible!"

A Five-Colored Poison Spider nest was discovered in the woods?

Zhang Che couldn't help but feel astonished. He had witnessed the powers of a Five-Colored Poison Spider for himself. If there was really a big group of them swarming out at this moment, even if the military had deployed defense personnel in the woods, it was impossible to guarantee there wouldn't be any casualties.

After all, there were nearly three hundred preparatory beastmasters in the entire Year 3 cohort that came here!

Most of them were pretty much useless in actual combat. It was no easy feat to keep every one of them safe.

After hearing what Lieutenant Qi said, everyone's faces changed. They didn't dare to waste any time. The front and back of the group reversed positions and quickly headed back to the camp they came from along the small path they had taken.

They weren't ignorant fools; all of them saw the strength of a Five-Colored Poison Spider for themselves, and had a clear understanding of them. If they delayed for even a moment, they might get into an extremely dangerous situation.

Dadada… Boom!…

Not even a minute after they started retreating, the clear sounds of a machine gun firing could be heard from the depths of the forest. There were even explosions occasionally. Those were the sounds of grenades going off…

Chapter 26: Chapter 026 – A True Warrior

The sounds of gunfire weren't very far away from them.

Everyone's faces changed drastically, including Second Lieutenant Qi.

They had actually used guns! It seemed like the number of spiders in that Five-Colored Poison Spider nest was definitely not low. The beastmasters deployed by the military for security were actually not enough to handle them, and they were forced to use firearms.

There were still quite a number of beasts in the suburbs that weren't killed off. Under normal circumstances, it was best to leave them to the beastmasters if they had the option of not employing the use of firearms.

That was because exotic beasts from the beast horde were very sensitive to the sound of gunfire. They might even lure every beast within several kilometers to them.

If it came to that, then it would really be dangerous!

"Hurry hurry hurry, everyone pick up your pace. You must get to the ad hoc camp as soon as possible!"

Lieutenant Qi's expression turned a little fierce. He had participated in the last beast horde, and understood how dangerous this situation was. He couldn't help but started yelling at the students.

They also understood that danger was imminent, and ran like their lives depended on it. Even though they were already out of breath, they didn't dare to stop for even a moment.

"Don't be afraid, Zhang Xiaoche. If the exotic beasts really come at us, I will protect you!"

Huang Tielan consoled Zhang Che as she ran by his side. She shouldn't be underestimated, despite the fact that she had a big body. Although she had run several hundred meters, she didn't look tired at all, forcing Zhang Che to renew his opinion of her.

-But, Miss, are you sure you didn't speak wrongly?-

Zhang Che decided to ignore her.

The sounds of gunfire were still rising continuously in the forest behind them. It was obvious that the situation was very serious, casting a dark cloud into the hearts of those running.

In the depths of the forest, a deep valley…

A large number of Five-Colored Poison Spiders, each about the size of a millstone, were gushing out endlessly from a cave in the depths of the valley. Their densely packed furry bodies caused one's scalp to go numb after seeing them.

In the area above the mouth of the valley, a group of about fifty soldiers were wielding their firearms, shooting madly at the wave of spiders.

Even within the army, there weren't many mid- and high-tier beastmasters. Under such circumstances, the most reliable weapons were still the firearms in their possession.

The Five-Colored Poison Spiders were only three-star bronze-quality beasts, after all. Although their carapaces were very tough, they couldn't withstand rifle bullets. Under the heavy fire, the body parts of the exotic beasts were flying everywhere, thick yellow fluid splashing in all directions.

Under such a fierce assault, a Five-Colored Poison Spider would die from time to time, turning into a streak of light and dissipating away.

Although the soldiers felt a slight heartache seeing that, they didn't have a choice under such circumstances, either.

There were too many Five-Colored Poison Spiders. Moreover, these exotic beasts knew how to push their advantages and minimize the opposite. After rushing out of the valley, they immediately spread out and sped off to the surrounding forest. Even though the soldiers were trying their best to kill them all, there were still quite a number of them that slipped away.

A commanding officer who held the rank of Captain was urging the Year 3 students and teachers through his communication device, telling them to hurry to the camp with an anxious expression.

The military had surveyed the area very thoroughly for this outdoor training, but unexpectedly, there was still an undiscovered cave in the valley. Only the heavens knew how many Five-Colored Poison Spiders were hiding in it.

With such an unexpected incident, the soldiers in charge of security could only do their best to delay the Five-Colored Poison Spiders in order to buy time for the students to retreat.

As more and more Five-Colored Poison Spiders broke through the perimeter set up by the group of soldiers, the battles started widening to a much larger area.

The sounds of gunfire began to spread in all directions, too.

What was more worrying was that as the sound of gunfire spread, the surrounding exotic beasts would definitely be lured over. It would truly be a huge problem then.

Even so, the soldiers were left with no other choice. Their reinforcements needed some time to rush over here. Every soldier here were basically prepared to sacrifice themselves.

"Hurry! Persevere on, everyone, we'll reach the camp in just a little bit!"

Within the forest, the preparatory beastmasters of Class 2 were running out of breath. If it wasn't for the fact that they knew the Five-Colored Poison Spiders would catch up to them if they stopped to rest, they would have collapsed on the grass field.

Lieutenant Qi was creasing his brow, cheering on the students as they ran. Currently, they were barely a kilometer away from the military camp. They would be in a much safer position if they held on for a few minutes more.

Anxiety could be seen all over Class 2's homeroom teacher, Han Sheqing. He was similarly cheering on his students, telling the students who were at the limits of their strength to not give up.

"Everyone, hang on for another few minutes. We'll be safe once we reach the camp. You mustn't give up!"

Running with the group, Zhang Che felt his lungs burning, his legs turning limp. He almost couldn't run any longer.

However, he felt embarrassed after taking a look at Huang Tielan by his side, who was only breathing slightly heavily. -I'm a freaking man; how could I possibly be weaker than a girl?-

Ugh… alright. Huang Tielan was surely not a weak little girl, but Zhang Che didn't want to admit defeat, either. He was someone with a cheat, after all. How could he be so weak?

At this moment, the few people who were at the back of the ground suddenly heard 'shasha' sounds from the bushes behind them. They turned back in shock to take a look, and were almost scared into having their souls leave their bodies.

"Ah— the spiders have caught up!"

Everyone turned to look after hearing that scream, and saw three Five-Colored Poison Spiders as big as millstones scuttling in their direction, chasing them with their pedipalps raised.

"Teacher Han, you bring the students away first!"

Lieutenant Qi turned back resolutely, with his blade in hand and the Eagle-Beak Pheasant alongside him, engaging the three Five-Colored Poison Spiders.

There weren't any traces of hesitation in his movements!

If Lieutenant Qi could easily win against a single Five-Colored Poison Spider with his original combat form-type beast, then two of those spiders would be able to stand against him evenly.

However, there were three spiders this time around. Even though Lieutenant Qi was unusually brave, he would probably find self-preservation difficult. Without any reinforcements, it was very likely that he would lose horribly and be killed by the Five-Colored Poison Spiders.

Even so, in order to keep the Class 2 students safe, Lieutenant Qi turned back without any hesitation, not taking his personal safety into account.

After witnessing this scene, every student felt a surge of warmth in their hearts. At the same time, they felt their eyes turning sour and were almost touched to tears.

As Lu Xun1 had once said: A true warrior would face a bleak life head on, and dared to look straight ahead at the dripping of blood.

And Lieutenant Qi, who intentionally faced off against three Five-Colored Poison Spiders, was definitely worthy of the title, "A true warrior"!

Chapter 27: Chapter 027 – An Unfair Fight

Edited by RED

"Officer Qi!" The Class 2 students cried out in shock, stopping in place.

"Quickly go, you'll only add to my troubles if you remain here!" Lieutenant Qi cried out loud, staring at the three incoming Five-Colored Poison Spiders with round, enraged eyes.

His words were true; most of the preparatory beastmasters in Class 2 only had one-star black iron-quality beasts, with a tiny fraction of them having bronze-quality beasts. When up against three three-star bronze-quality Five-Colored Poison Spiders, they were practically useless, and would even get in his way.

Han Sheqing glanced toward Second Lieutenant Qi, who had already rushed over to intercept the three Five-Colored Poison Spiders. Then, he turned around and shouted at the students, "Let's go! We'll hurry back to the camp and inform them of the situation here."

The young men and women's eyes reddened. They mustered their remaining strength and ran in the ad hoc camp's direction.

Zhang Che was hesitating, when Huang Tielan suddenly pulled on him and said with a burning gaze, "Zhang Xiaoche, let's go help Officer Qi. I know you're thinking of this as well."

Zhang Che looked sideways. There wasn't any trace of fear in Huang Tielan's eyes. On the contrary, her gaze was filled with the will to fight.

As expected, Tienan was different from the others!

Zhang Che wanted to test the upper limits of a one-star silver-quality beast's combat strength as well. He nodded resolutely and said, "Alright, with our two one-star silver-quality beasts, we'll definitely be able to stall one of the Five-Colored Poison Spiders."

"Mm, we'll do it for sure!"

Huang Tielan revealed a faint smile as she commanded her Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede to turn back to the imminent battle.

At this moment, Second Lieutenant Qi was leading his Eagle-Beak Pheasant and clashing with the Five-Colored Poison Spiders. He was swinging his transformed weapon-type beast card, drawing an arc before him, with no openings to exploit.

The Eagle-Beak Pheasant was moving about with its long legs, its wings slightly opened. From time to time, its sharp beak would shoot forward with lightning speed, and its defensive maneuvering wasn't bad, either.

The duo actually managed to hold back the attacks of three Five-Colored Poison Spiders. Although their defenses seemed a little flawed, it shouldn't be an issue for them to hold on for a short while.

At this moment, he suddenly heard the sound of quick footsteps from behind. As he dodged the attack of a Five-Colored Poison Spider, he turned around to look and saw a pair of students rushing back to him with their own subdued beasts.

Lieutenant Qi was both shocked and angry. "Are you looking to die? Don't drag me down with you if that's the case!"

From Lieutenant Qi's view, it seemed like the youngsters nowadays really didn't know the difference between heaven and earth. Did they think that they could withstand the attacks of the Five-Colored Poison Spider with their useless beasts?

"Officer Qi, we'll help you!"

A hint of excitement could be seen on Huang Tielan's face. She was standing about twenty meters away from her beast, commanding it to pounce on one of the Five-Colored Poison Spider.

-Help me? It'd be great if you didn't add to my troubles!-

Zhang Che recalled his Wind Shadow Wolves and re-established his spiritual link with the Fiery Scorpion. Seeing Lieutenant Qi was about to emit smoke from all of his orifices, he hurriedly explained, "Officer Qi, our beasts are both silver-quality. They should be able to defend against the attacks of one of the Five-Colored Poison Spiders. As long as we can delay for some time, Teacher Han and the rest will reach the camp and call for reinforcements to help us."

Shua shua, Lieutenant Qi slashed out twice, forcing one of the Five-Colored Poison Spider back. A strange flash gleamed in his eyes before he nodded, replying, "Then be careful."

Two one-star silver-quality beasts. Even if they couldn't defeat a three-star bronze-quality Five-Colored Poison Spider, they should be able to hold out for some time, right?

With that, the pressure on him would be greatly reduced. There might even be a chance that he'd defeat the two Five-Colored Poison Spiders.

From a battle that nearly guaranteed his death, such a huge reversal happened in the blink of eye. There was even a slight chance at victory. Second Lieutenant Qi feel much more at ease. After all, no one would ever wish to face death!

Just as Lieutenant Qi was dealing with the two Five-Colored Poison Spider's combined attacks with his subdued beast easily, Huang Tielan's Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede took on the remaining spider on the other front.

The Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede was obviously no stranger to the battlefield, either. It could sense that its opponent was much stronger than itself, and didn't pounce at the Five-Colored Poison Spider directly. Its long body crawled in an arc with flying speed, detouring around the spider and attacking its abdomen.

The Five-Colored Poison Spider's body was separated into two sections. Its front half was protected with a thick carapace with astounding defensive strength, while the larger abdomen area only had a thin layer of soft armor protecting it. This was basically where its weakness lay.

Therefore, when it saw this little worm trying to sneak attack it from the side, it quickly turned to the side on the spot disdainfully, drawing two arcs in the air with its chelicerae, thrusting them directly at the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede.

The Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede was astonished; it didn't expect its opponent to have such quick reactions.

Fortunately, this fellow held back a little when it pounced on the spider. Seeing the Five-Colored Poison Spider's chelicerae stabbing in its direction, the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede hurriedly twisted its body and used its tough back carapace to receive the attack.

Dang dang, two crisp sounds of collision rang out. The Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede was nearly flipped over. Slightly away from its head, two deep marks were left on the golden back carapace.

Luckily, the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede was a silver-tier beast, and possessed comparatively decent defense. It barely withstood the Five-Colored Poison Spider's stab and avoided any substantial damage.

However, the Five-Colored Poison Spider wouldn't let go of this little worm that dared to taunt it so easily. Its blade-like limbs chewed the earth as it pounced at the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede once more.

The Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede was astonished. It didn't dare to meet its attack; its long body hurriedly retreated in a fluster.

Shua!

Unexpectedly, the Five-Colored Poison Spider was only feinting. A mass of white spider silk suddenly shot out from its underbelly, aiming straight at the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede.

It knew that this little crawling worm had pretty good defenses. If it wanted to kill the centipede in one strike, it could only use a surprise attack to trap it and end the battle in the shortest time possible.

The Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede had no time to dodge, revealing a flustered look in its eyes.

Right at this moment, a red silhouette pounced at it, with a pair of pincers raised up high. Kacha, the Five-Colored Poison Spider's silk was snapped in half just like that.

In the crucial moment, the Fiery Scorpion entered the fray in the nick of time, saving the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede from imminent danger.

"Woah, Zhang Xiaoche, the little scorpion was trained pretty well under you!"

Seeing her beast had escaped from death, Huang Tielan couldn't help but let out a long sigh of relief. She looked sideways at Zhang Che, with a smile hanging on her chubby cheeks.

Even so, Zhang Che didn't respond to Huang Tielan's words. Instead, he looked on at the battlefield with knitted brow.

Although the late Fiery Scorpion had successfully snapped the Five-Colored Poison Spider's silk, it was rather sticky, and the cut off portions didn't fall to the ground. Instead, the silk was stuck to the Fiery Scorpion's pincer, causing it to basically lose its function.

This was, from the start, an uneven battle. Despite the fact that the Fiery Scorpion and the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede were working together, and their combined strengths were greater than simply one plus one, they were still insufficient to go head to head against the three-starred bronze-quality Five-Colored Poison Spider.

Chapter 28: Chapter 028 – Zhang Xiaoche, What Exactly Have You Taught It!

Translator: mianbao Editor: Aelryinth

Edited by RED

In the depths of the Southern Suburb Woods, the Five-Colored Poison Spiders were still coming out of the valley cave endlessly, as if a spatial gateway was opened in there.

However, the group of soldiers who were in charge of keeping the battle contained there previously had already left, battling as they retreated.

At this time, almost all of the teachers and students had safely returned to the camp. The soldiers didn't have to continue taking the huge risk of defending at the valley entrance.

No one knew whether there are any higher-tiered exotic beasts in the cave. If a bunch of mid-tier beasts were to come gushing out from that cave, then the several dozen soldiers would have been sacrificed for naught.

Although the ordinary soldiers had retreated, a tall, muscular middle-aged man dressed in military attire appeared on the apex of the adjacent mountain from nowhere.

A shining golden star was hanging on this man's shoulders. He was actually a Major General!

At this moment, this Major General was standing atop a thin branch at the top of a tree, his body swaying to the wind. It was as if he weighed nothing at all.

He was looking silently into the valley with furrowed brow, muttering to himself, "When did so many Five-Colored Poison Spiders hide themselves in this valley? How strange."

After pondering to himself for some time, the Major General didn't solve the mystery. He suddenly turned to look to the side, and said to a phoenix-like mystical beast whose entire body was flaming red, standing on another branch, "Go take a look in the cave. Check what else is in there."

That phoenix-like beast immediately answered with a clear cry and suddenly turned into a red streak, flying straight into the depths of the valley below, where that cave that resembled a huge ghostly beast was waiting.

~~~~~~
Shuashuashua—
The two Five-Colored Poison Spiders ganging up on Second Lieutenant Qi seemed to have some chemistry between them. They shot out several webs of sticky silk at him at the same time, trying to bind him to the ground and kill him off in one go.
However, Lieutenant Qi already knew how powerful the Five-Colored Poison Spider's silk was, There was no way he'd let himself get caught so easily.
He narrowly dodged the webs one after another, as if he was dancing. Then, he took another step, suddenly closing the distance between them and drew a vertical arc with his blade, slashing down on the head of one of the Five-Colored Poison Spiders.
The Five-Colored Poison Spider didn't expect Second Lieutenant Qi to be so decisive, to actually dare strike it from the front. It raised its chelicerae in a fluster, receiving the blade's edge.
One of its chelicerae was almost cleaved in two. Its millstone-sized body was forced back several meters.
Even so, Lieutenant Qi's sudden attack created an opportunity for the other Five-Colored Poison Spider. It suddenly crawled forward, brandishing its chelicerae and blade-like legs, shrouding him in a blur of shadows.
Lieutenant Qi's expression remain unchanged. A figure zoomed past his side; it was his subdued beast, the Eagle-Beak Pheasant, pouncing into the blur of shadows as if it was making a suicidal attack, pecking at the Five-Colored Poison Spider's head.
A mournful cry rang out. Following which, both the Eagle-Beak Pheasant and Five-Colored Poison Spiders backed off from each other.
On the Eagle-Beak Pheasant's neck, there was now several deep marks. These were not light injuries; fresh blood was flowing out from the wounds.
It wasn't any better for the Five-Colored Poison Spider, either. One of its eyes was pecked away by the Eagle-Beak Pheasant, turning it into a one-eyed spider.
Both parties were apprehensive of the other after that, turning the situation into a standstill.
On the other side, the Fiery Scorpion and Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede were attacking the other Five-Colored Poison Spider together, but they were continuously forced back by the latter.
The Fiery Scorpion raised its remaining usable pincer, blocking the Five-Colored Poison Spider's stab attack. Under the huge force contained in the attack, the Fiery Scorpion's two-meter long body skidded nearly a meter backwards, drawing several deep marks on the ground with its limbs.
Zhang Che furrowed his brow and said to Huang Tielan, "We can't continue on like this. Our beasts can't even get near it. If we continue allowing the Five-Colored Poison Spider to attack, there's no guarantee that there won't be any accidents. We have to think of a solution."
Huang Tielan nodded, saying, "I think so, too… What are your plans?"
Zhang Che nearly fell over. He glanced at Lieutenant Qi, who was still stuck in battle against two Five-Colored Poison Spiders. It didn't seem like the victor would be decided any time soon. He said helplessly, "Who knows if there will be any more Five-Colored Poison Spiders crawling out from the woods? If we wish to escape, we have to either kill or heavily injure this Five-Colored Poison Spider in the shortest time possible, then work together with Lieutenant Qi to get rid of the remaining two spiders and return to the camp as soon as possible."
"Therefore", Zhang Che turned to look at Huang Tielan and said firmly, "I need you to have your beast try to restrain this Five-Colored Poison Spider. I'll get the Fiery Scorpion to use the opportunity for a sneak attack. Whether we succeed or not, we will only get one chance."
"Mm mm, I'll definitely cooperate!" Huang Tielan nodded profusely.
Tienan immediately ordered her Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede to pounce at the Five-Colored Poison Spider without a care for itself.
Zhang Che thought inwardly, -Does this girl not know how to hold back a little?
-Alright… Perhaps she's a true wealthy girl and didn't care about a mere one-star silver-quality beast?-
Seeing as this little worm still dared to rush at it after being beaten down, the Five-Colored Poison Spider was immediately enraged. It quickly went into motion, aiming its chelicerae at the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede's head and stabbing at it once more.
However, after receiving Huang Tielan's clear orders, the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede didn't try to dodge anymore. It continued charging forward, narrowly dodging the spider's attack by sliding its head sideways. Then, the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede suddenly arched its body up and shot out like a spring, reaching directly in front of the Five-Colored Poison Spider.
The Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede's body suddenly twisted, wrapping around the Five-Colored Poison Spider's body like a belt, while its countless blade-like limbs held tightly onto its target like hooks. Although its legs were unable to stab into the Five-Colored Poison Spider, it was able to keep it from struggling free for a short amount of time.
"Now's the time!"
Zhang Che grabbed onto this rare opportunity, ordering the Fiery Scorpion to quickly crawl behind the Five-Colored Poison Spider. Then, its raised stinger aimed at the Five-Colored Poison Spider's orifice and stung fiercely into it.
Pu!
That 30 cm stinger was successfully plunged into the Five-Colored Poison Spider's flowery hole. Immediately after, its fire-attributed toxin gushed into the spider's body.
Ji!
The Five-Colored Poison Spider flailed its limbs and chelicerae about, trying to attack the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede who was holding it in place. Suddenly, the Five-Colored Poison Spider's body stiffened and it let out an ear-piercing cry. It started rolling madly on the ground, along with the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede that was still coiled around it.
Zhang Che saw the Fiery Scorpion pulled out its murder weapon from the Five-Colored Poison Spider's flowery hole, a fluid mixed with a fiery red glow spurting out from there.
Piercing the flowery hole, establish merit!
"Zhang-Xiao-Che!"
Just as Zhang Che was feeling proud of himself for his strategy, he suddenly heard Huang Tielan gnashing her teeth in anger from the side. Turning his head sideways, Zhang Che saw that Huang Tielan, who usually treated him in an amicable manner, was looking at him with burning eyes.
"What exactly have you taught the little scorpion!?"
Chapter 29: Chapter 029 – Young Man, Do You Wish to Enroll Into The Army?
Jiu!
A clear cry rang out as a red blur suddenly shot out from the deep cave.
Following the appearance of this red blur, several deep blue spider silks shot out as well at lightning speed, chasing after the red blur.
That red blur was none other than the red-colored bird beast that had gone scouting into the cave previously. Seeing as the attacks were closing in on it, it abruptly drew a sharp arc in the sky, turning back and shooting out a scarlet tongue of flame from its beak.
One of the several threads of blue spider silk lost its momentum and fell to the forest below, while the others were engulfed by the tongue of flames, turning into ash with sizzling sounds.
On the other hand, the single thread of deep blue silk that fell into woods penetrated several huge trees, showing how powerful those threads were. Anyone would be terrified upon seeing this.
In the next moment, the trees that were touched by the blue silk started withering at a speed visible to the naked eye. That original verdant leaves gradually turned a withered yellow color.
A mountain breeze blew by, as if autumn had arrived ahead of time. Uncountable withered leaves floated down and formed a deep layer atop the verdant grass.
After that red blur flew out of the cave, it flew straight toward a mountain summit at the side and landed on the shoulder of a middle-aged Major General. It appeared languid, showing that it had already suffered some injuries.
"It turned out that the exotic beasts in that cave are actually that powerful!"
The Major General's expression changed greatly. He looked toward that cave in the valley, revealing a fearful gaze. He pondered for a short moment, before stepping off the tree, floating to the ground below and hurriedly dashing out of the forest.
"I have to inform the upper echelon of this matter as soon as possible. Otherwise, once the exotic beasts come out, all of Qian Wei City might be drawn into some very troublesome matters!"
~~~~~~

"Zhang! Xiao! Che! What exactly did you teach to the little scorpion!" Huang Tielan stared at Zhang Che, gnashing her teeth. Her usual gentle side was nowhere to be seen.

Zhang Che was immediately embarrassed. He never considered that getting his subdued beast to use such a vulgar offensive method was indeed a little too unsightly.

-But, I am a transcender. Is my face really that important?-

Thus, Zhang Che let out a forced laughter and spoke as if nothing was wrong, "Extreme methods are needed during extreme times. This was the only way to kill that exotic beast to free us from our predicament."

Mm. He was right. Second Lieutenant Qi was looking in his direction with an admiring gaze.

Alas, it wasn't this easy to hoodwink Huang Tielan. Her eyes narrowed, chuckling, "Then why do I feel like the little scorpion is very well-practiced with this technique?"

"Alright, Huang Tielan. Please don't concern yourself with such minor details. Let's quickly go help Lieutenant Qi kill the other two Five-Colored Poison Spiders and return to the camp. Only the heavens know how many more Five-Colored Poison Spiders are in the forest and coming our way. We'll be at much greater risk if we continue wasting our time here," Zhang Che said righteously, then ordered the Fiery Scorpion to head into the battlefield on the other side.

Seeing as Zhang Che had diverted his attention to the other battle, Huang Tielan continued staring at his back, thinking to herself fearfully, -So you're such a person, Zhang Xiaoche!

-Luckily this Miss here refused to take back the Fiery Scorpion earlier. Otherwise, I'd have a beast that has a liking for the flowery hole. Wouldn't I get mocked to death then?-

A fearsome image popped up in Huang Tielan's mind, causing her to shudder all over.

While the Scarlet Head Golden Back Centipede was holding onto the Five-Colored Poison Spider during the Fiery Scorpion's sneak attack, it had suffered a violent beating and was severely injured. It was unable to participate in the upcoming battle and was recalled back into Huang Tielan's spiritual sea.

However, with the Fiery Scorpion that had gone through Zhang Che's vulgar training reinforcing him, Lieutenant Qi, who had been holding the advantage from the start, immediately unleashed his might and cut down the remaining Five-Colored Poison Spiders in just a short while.

After doing a quick collection of the materials found on the three Five-Colored Poison Spiders' corpses, Lieutenant Qi packed them into polymer bags, with each of them carrying one, and quickly ran in the ad hoc camp's direction.

By the time they arrived at the camp, all other preparatory beastmasters in Year 3 had returned to the camp safely. They were gathered in groups according to their classes to board the military vehicles to return back to Qian Wei City.

There were many teams of armed soldiers in the camp's surrounding area, on the alert with grave expressions. The military's beastmasters even had their beasts out, guarding the perimeters, as well.

Zhang Che scanned through the beasts and couldn't help but feel shocked.

They were indeed the elites of the army. These beastmasters were at Tier Two at the very least, with most of them at Tier Three. Not only that, most of their subdued beasts were bronze quality, with several silver-tier beasts here and there.

Regrettably, however, Zhang Che didn't spot any gold-quality beasts among them, leaving him slightly disappointed.

-It seems like gold-quality exotic beasts are in a different league and aren't as common. Who knows when will I have my own gold-quality beast?-

Even if it was a one-star gold-quality beast, its strength would be greater than a four-star black iron-quality beast!

To determine whether a beastmaster was strong, one had to look at his Tier level. That would decide whether he could employ a higher-level beast, as well as the quantity of them.

However, the more important aspect was the beast's quality.

Zhang Che was anticipating the day when he could have his own gold-quality beast!

On their trip back, Lieutenant Qi did not accompany the Class 2 group. He had to remain at the camp to deal with what was going to come with the others.

"Goodbye, all of you. I hope you'll become powerful beastmasters in the future, and do your part for the future of the Alliance."

After bidding farewell to the reluctant boys and girls, Lieutenant Qi went up to Zhang Che and looked at him in admiration, asking, "Zhang Che, do you intend to try for military school? I feel that there's a lot of potential in you. Your future will definitely be bright if you join the military."

Zhang Che hesitated for a moment, then rejected Lieutenant Qi's proposal apologetically, "That, I have no intentions of joining the military."

Enlisting in the army? That was impossible. He would never become a soldier in his life. Zhang Che didn't think he could endure the army's restrictions.

Moreover, there was a huge secret on him. It was much better to be an unrestrained lone wanderer.

"That's really a pity." Lieutenant Qi didn't insist. He shook his head and sighed, then pointed at two polymer bags on the ground and said, "In that battle earlier, it was all thanks to both of your assistance. Split the two Five-Colored Poison Spiders' materials among yourselves."

Zhang Che was overjoyed. He didn't act pretentious and accepted them directly.

One had to know that a Five-Colored Poison Spider's materials could sell for nearly 100 thousand Alliance dollars. To Zhang Che, this was not a small sum!

After bidding Second Lieutenant Qi goodbye, Zhang Che picked up the bag of Five-Colored Poison Spider material that now belonged to him and almost went wild with joy.

Unexpectedly, just by participating in an outdoor training, he had earned nearly a hundred thousand Alliance dollars! It truly wasn't a wasted trip!

"Zhang Xiaoche, can you not be so obsessed with money?" Huang Tielan stamped her feet loudly, then pointed her finger at the other bag and continued, "Nah, I'll let you have the other bag, as well. I didn't do much earlier, anyway."

Zhang Che nodded after hearing that. He immediately grabbed the adjacent bag and quickly walked towards a military vehicle parked by the side.

"Hey hey hey, wait for me, Zhang Xiaoche!"

Huang Tielan's was distracted and she spaced out for a moment. She hurriedly gave chase to Zhang Che.

——

After boarding the bus, the group of boys and girls started asking about the details of what happened earlier, wondering how Zhang Che and Huang Tielan were able to provide assistance to Lieutenant Qi, helping him kill the three Five-Colored Poison Spiders. None of them didn't dare to believe it as the truth.

"Haha, you guys have no idea. Earlier, it was all thanks to my Zhang Xiaoche coming up with a strategy to kill off one of the Five-Colored Poison Spiders, then we went on to help Lieutenant Qi turn the situation around…"

Zhang Che didn't say a word. Meanwhile, Huang Tielan, who was still next to him, started showing off proudly with a faint smile on her face.

Fortunately, this chick's brain was still working fine and didn't expose Zhang Che's vulgar methods. Otherwise, wouldn't everyone despise him?

Seeing as Zhang Che had become the focus of everyone, the little fatty Liu Haowei grumbled softly, "Hmph, what are you acting so smug for? Weren't you just relying on your good subdued beast? If I had a silver-quality beast as well, the one helping Lieutenant Qi earlier would have been me."

After which, he turned sideways to look at Wu Junyu, hoping that his fellow 'Anti-Zhang Alliance' companion would say something to diminish their enemy's prestige and bolster their own.

Who would've thought that Wu Junyu, who hadn't said a word after boarding the bus, didn't seem to have any intention of doing so. It seemed like he was still absorbed in the pain of losing his subdued beast.

As the only person who had lost his beast today, Wu Junyu's mood was at rock bottom. Furthermore, he was nearly killed by a Five-Colored Poison Spider, leaving him traumatized. There was no way he'd care about what Liu Haowei said.

The group returned with complicated feelings during the ride back, and soon arrived at their school.

After alighting the vehicle and being dismissed for the day, Zhang Che called out to Huang Tielan and handed one of the bags over, saying, "This is yours, Huang Tielan."

The latter blanked out for a moment. Her chubby face looked endearingly silly, asking, "What do you mean, Zhang Xiaoche? Didn't I gift you the Five-Colored Poison Spider's materials?"

"But I didn't agree to accept it," Zhang Che blinked, bringing the bag forward a little more.

"You don't want it, fine!"

Huang Tielan stamped her feet coyly, causing Zhang Che to sway a little from the impact. Then, she snatched the bag from Zhang Che and walked out the school gates with heavy steps, 'dong dong dong dong'.

Watching Huang Tielan's figure moving further away, Zhang Che touched his nose, smiling. He also slowly walked out the gates.

Previously, he accepted the Fiery Scorpion mainly because he lacked a strong beast, and it would allow him to hunt more exotic beasts in the beast world, accumulating his strength.

As for now, Huang Tielan contributed greatly to the Five-Colored Poison Spiders' material. Not only that, her beast suffered substantial injuries, too. It was her right to have a share of the spoils. Zhang Che would never accept it no matter what.

Even after accepting the Fiery Scorpion, Zhang Che promised a better beast card to Huang Tielan in the future. It could be counted as returning the favor, and not accepting her gifts for nothing.

Due to their encounter with the Five-Colored Poison Spiders, their outdoor training had to be terminated midway. When Zhang Che sold off the bag of materials in the market and returned home, it was only around one in the afternoon.

Since it was still early, Zhang Che brought his mother, Sun Lan to the best hospital in Qian Wei City to buy the latest genetic repair medicine to cure her illness.

After arriving at the hospital, naturally she had to go through the routine checks.

The two waited for nearly two hours before the results were finally out.

"How is it, Doctor? Did my mother's illness aggravate?" Naturally, Zhang Che couldn't understand the report, and could only ask the white-haired doctor in front of him.

Ever since Sun Lan was diagnosed with a malignant tumor half a year ago, she could only rely on medicine to keep her condition in check due to their lack of money to treat it, keeping it from getting worse.

Even so, Sun Lan's complexion was far worse than before. She even quit her job a month ago to recuperate at home.

If it wasn't the compensation from Zhang Che's father dying in the war a few years ago, coupled with the Alliance's coalition government providing financial aid, they wouldn't be able to sustain their daily expenses.

That aged doctor stared at the report for some time. He suddenly creased his brow, saying, "It's not looking very good. Due to her illness not receiving treatment in time, the tumor cells have started mutating, and are showing signs of rapidly spreading. Ai, if you had come for treatment earlier, there wouldn't be such problems."

The tumor cells were mutating?

Zhang Che's face paled greatly after hearing this.

He, who had inherited the memories of his previous self, naturally knew that following the appearance of the spatial gateways, some unknown substances were mixed into Mercury's world. Many illnesses had a certain possibility of mutating.

The moment such a situation occurred, the illness would become extremely complicated. No matter if it was the traditional treatment methods, or the latest genetic repairment treatment, they weren't guaranteed to be able to fully cure them.

"Then, if we used the latest genetic repair medicine, would it guarantee curing the illness?" After asking this, Zhang Che stared at the doctor's face, his feelings in disarray.

As expected, the doctor shook his head gently, sighing, "There's no guarantee. As of now, there are very few mutated cancer patients who recovered from their illness. Even those who used the latest genetic medicine are like that."

Sun Lan's face was devoid of color, the light in her eyes dimmed. "Forget it, Xiaoche. Let's not bother with treatment. It can't be cured anyway."

Zhang Che wasn't willing to give up just like that, however, and asked the doctor, "Then, doctor, is there any way to keep the cancer cells from spreading, to keep her condition from aggravating?"

This time, the doctor nodded slightly, "Of course there are ways. Although the latest genetic repair medicines aren't able to completely cure such conditions, they are able to effectively contain the cells, keeping them from spreading. This could effectively extend the patient's life."

Zhang Che immediately heaved a sigh of relief. -It's fine this way. As long as it can be delayed, they should be able to find a cure in the future, right?"-

Alas, the doctor's tone suddenly shifted as he continued, "However, the expenses for this would be too great to bear. In order to control the cells from spreading, the patient would require a shot of the genetic repair medicine once every half a month. It would cost twenty million dollars a year."

Twenty million Alliance dollars a year!

Sun Lan nearly fell off her chair after hearing that from the doctor, her face turned even paler than before.

"Let's go back, Xiaoche. Mom's not treating it anymore."

Sun Lan came back to herself and revealed a cold and dismal smile. She pulled on Zhang Che's hand and was ready to leave.

"Don't worry, Mom. I will definitely help you find a way to cure your illness."

Zhang Che wasn't feeling good in his heart, either. It wasn't because of the huge sum of twenty million dollars a year, however. It might seem to be an extreme amount, but it was not even two million dollars a month. With his current abilities, he was able to earn that much if he entered the beast world more frequently.

It was just that he didn't expect such a turn in Sun Lan's condition. There was no way to find a cure in the short term; that left him worrying.

Zhang Che didn't give up and continued asking the doctor. "Doctor, is there no solution at all?"

After the world started using the materials found on exotic beasts, technology had advanced significantly in all areas. It couldn't be that they were helpless against this kind of mutated cancer, right?

"It's not like there is no way…" the doctor mumbled to himself irresolutely, causing Zhang Che to feel happy. He slowly explained, "But I have only heard about this before. There are extremely rare exotic beasts that are of the healing type. They have a chance of treating such illnesses."

-Healing-type beast?-

Zhang Che's heart sank. -What type of beast is this? I have never even heard of it before.-

From what he'd learned from school, the beasts currently used by beastmasters were mainly separated into Original Combat Body, Defensive, and Weapon-types.

Of those, the original combat body-types were the most common, followed by defensive-types. As for weapon-types, they were even rarer. Even if you killed a hundred different species of exotic beasts, you might not necessarily find a weapon-type beast card.

Up until now, Zhang Che had only seen a weapons-type beast card in Second Lieutenant Qi's possession, and that was only by coincidence. Otherwise, only when he ventured deep into the beast world to hunt exotic beasts would he discover a weapon-type beast card.

From this, one could imagine how difficult it was to obtain an unheard-of-type of beast card like the healing-type.

——

With heavy hearts, they returned home. Zhang Che first consoled his mother Sun Lan, telling her that he would surely find a healing-type exotic beast. Even if he wasn't able to achieve this in the short term, he could earn the amount required to purchase the genetic repair medicine to extend his mother's life.

Before they left the hospital, the doctor said that with the genetic repair medicine in effect, his mother's condition wouldn't deteriorate in the upcoming 3 years at the very least.

As for whether he could find a healing-type beast within that time… although Zhang Che didn't feel confident about it, there was at least a direction for him to work towards.

Moreover, even if he couldn't obtain a healing-type beast card by hunting beasts, he could make inquiries to the outside world and hire those who had such a beast to help cure Sun Lan's illness.

Of course, this was provided that Zhang Che had enough influence for that!

Sitting on the chair by his bed, Zhang Che creased his brow, staring at the empty table. He blinked his eyes occasionally, making an important decision in his heart.

Originally, he intended to follow the common route of this world, finishing high school and entering a decent university. Then, he'd slowly develop his capabilities as a beastmaster, as well as learning the relevant knowledge of a beast cultivator.

However, everything changed today.

Facing the need of twenty million dollars a year, and even the mission of finding a healing-type beast within three years, which he had no choice but to complete, Zhang Che no longer had the time to waste in school.

"Hmm, since the primary objective entering university was to learn more about exotic beasts to prepare myself for the beast world in the future, now that I am able to visualize all their attributes, it doesn't matter that much whether I learn about them or not."

Thinking of this point, Zhang Che firmly made his decision.

Since he had a cheat-like advantage, he didn't have to enter university to charge himself up with knowledge like the others. Why didn't he just enter the beast world earlier to strive for his future?

Of course, the other main advantage of enrolling into a university was to broaden his horizons and expand his network.

However, no matter if it was his previous or current life, Zhang Che wasn't one who liked socializing. This, he could do without.

——

Waking up the next morning, Zhang Che made his decision known to Sun Lan, and transferred the remaining hundred thousand dollars to her account. Then, under his mother's concerned gaze, Zhang Che left his house resolutely.

Today was Sunday; there weren't any classes today. Zhang Che could only contact his homeroom teacher, Han Sheqing, via his personal terminal, explaining his situation at home and making his request to defer his studies.

After listening to Zhang Che's story, Han Sheqing didn't try to deter the former's decision. Instead, he let out a sigh and urged him, "Teacher supports your decision. I believe you will find a way to cure your mother's illness, too, but when you enter the beast world, you must remember to look out for your own safety."

After ending the call with Han Sheqing, Zhang Che thought of Huang Tielan.

-Should I tell her about my deferment?-

Although he had no feelings for that chubby chick, she offered him a great deal of help, after all. He couldn't possibly leave without saying goodbye, right?

Furthermore, Zhang Che didn't really have a person he could call a close friend in either of his lives. The help Huang Tielan rendered to him over this period had touched him, and he viewed her as a pretty close friend.

After struggling inwardly for some time, Zhang Che contacted Huang Tielan with his personal terminal.

"Woah, Zhang Xiaoche, you actually contacted me on your own. I'm so happy!"

Huang Tielan's voice was filled with surprise and happiness. This was the first time Zhang Che contacted her on his own through his personal terminal.

"Ugh, Huang Tielan, do you remember what I said yesterday? I'm going to hunt exotic beasts in the beast world again. I'll surely bring you a good beast card when I return."

"What, you're entering the beast world again?" Huang Tielan gasped. "Zhang Xiaoche, don't think that the beast world is very safe just because you returned safely the last time. Our priority now is to study properly. When we enter university in the future, there will be tons of opportunity for you to go to the beast world-"

Blahblah…

Zhang Che could only interrupt her and tell her about his reasons for entering the beast world. Also, he told her about his deferment from studies.

After listening to Zhang Che's explanation, Huang Tielan fell unusually silent and said gently, "Hmm. Then you have to pay more attention to your safety. Also, don't worry too much. I'll ask my father to check if there's anyone he knows with a healing-type beast. If there are any, I'll inform you immediately."

Zhang Che felt inexplicably touched. He chuckled, "Thank you, Tielan."

On the other hand, Huang Tielan smiled heartily, "No need for thanks. This is something I should do."

-Something you should do? What do you mean?-

By the time Zhang Che reacted to that, he felt a slight warmth in his heart for no reason.

Chapter 32: Chapter 032 – Vulgar to the End

Edited by RED

Coming to the spatial gateway located at the suburbs of Qian Wei City once more, Zhang Che no longer had to display his certificate to be granted passage into the military camp.

As an official beastmaster who had his own subdued beast, he only needed to call forth a beast card from his spiritual sea to be allowed through the camp unobstructed.

"I can surely grow strong quickly, and I will definitely find a healing-type beast within 3 years!"

Looking at the blue screen-like spatial gateway before him, Zhang Che cheered himself on inwardly as he followed the stream of people, entering it in an orderly manner.

Entering the beast world once more, Zhang Che already knew his way around. He decided on a direction and directly left the safe zone, advancing forward with quick steps.

Looking at the mountain forest in front of him, Zhang Che let out a faint smile. Three different- colored beast cards suddenly appeared between the tips of his fingers, and turned into a dark red scorpion, as well as two tall and mighty ash-gray wolves, standing by his sides.

There wasn't anyone who knew him here; Zhang Che didn't have to worry about his secret being exposed.

Moreover, having three subdued beasts was the mark of a Tier Two beastmaster. This might cause others to mistake him as a Tier Two beastmaster, reducing his troubles.

Without the permission of the owner, others were unable to steal a beastmaster's beast cards. Even if they were to kill him, the beast cards branded with his spiritual imprint would turn into rays of light and disappear.

However, one should never assume that others wouldn't resort to committing murder and stealing valuables just because of that. After all, in the face of violence, many people would choose their lives over material possessions.

Of course, this was only the wishful thinking of the weak and cowardly.

Would they allow you to live on after robbing you of your valuables, giving you a chance at revenge in the future?

~~~~~~
The area in front of him was a thinly-spread forest, with trees that resembled the pine trees found in Mercury growing there. The grasses were thinly spread, too, revealing spots of brown soil.
With his three beasts by his side, Zhang Che advanced deeper into the beast world and was now over five km away from the safe zone.
On the road, he killed a bunch of one-star, and even two-starred exotic beasts, bagging a pretty good sum of soul force, as well as a few beast cards.
It was probably due to his cheat-like advantage, Zhang Che felt that he obtained much more soul force than others whenever he killed an exotic beast. He could clearly sense that his spiritual strength was filled to the brim, and he would break through to a Tier Two beastmaster in the near future.
The only regrettable part was that he didn't obtain any similar beast cards, resulting in him being unable to gain any experience points for his fusion skill. Now, it was still at that measly 9 points.
"As it turns out, even though one-star and two-star exotic beasts are comparatively easier to hunt, it's not an easy matter to increase the fusion skill to level 2."
Thinking up to here, Zhang Che couldn't resist letting out a sigh. He had four three-star Psychedelic Ghost-Patterned Butterfly cards. He was waiting for the day when he could finally fuse them into a five-star, mid-tier beast card.
However, this matter couldn't be rushed, either. Moreover, he had to rise to a Tier Five beastmaster in order to utilize a five-star beast card!
Just as he was thinking about the matter regarding fusion, Zhang Che suddenly heard a rumbling sound up ahead, and saw several brown silhouettes charging towards him.
The Wind Shadow Wolves let out several low whimpers as they arched their bodies in a defensive position.
The Fiery Scorpion didn't show much of a reaction, however. It raised its pincers up, remaining by Zhang Che's side as usual. It didn't seem surprised by the sudden appearance of the exotic beasts.
Soon, the brown silhouettes passed through the sparse vegetation, entering Zhang Che's line of sight.
They were actually a group of wild boars with dagger-like tusks, brown hair covering their entire bodies. Their greed for food could be discerned in those pitch-black eyes, obviously treating Zhang Che and his subdued beasts as a delicacy.
[Brown-Haired Boar]
Level: One Star (Level 8)
Quality: Bronze
Characteristics: Thick Hide and Tough Body, The Mane on Its Back Can Be Shot As Projectiles When Enraged
Weakness: Enters A Weakened State For A Certain Period of Time After Shooting Its Mane Projectiles
Potential: D Rank: 25% Chance of Breaking Through Current Level, 2.5% Chance of Breaking Through Current Quality. Chances Halved on Next Upgrade. Upgradable 2 Times
Cultivating Directions: …
Zhang Che couldn't help but feel speechless after seeing the Brown-Haired Boar's attributes.
Aren't mane projectiles the skills of a porcupine? Why would this exotic beast that seemed more like a boar know such a skill?
He had no idea how far the range of the projectiles were, either. It seemed like he had to stay as far back as he could.
With a thought, his three beasts charged towards the Brown-Haired Boars in a horizontal line, while Zhang Che himself hid behind a rock silently, to prevent himself from being hit by the exotic beasts' mane projectiles.
This was a one-star bronze quality beast. According to the norm, this fellow's mane projectile attack shouldn't be any weaker than a bow and arrow. Although he was wearing a defensive suit, he didn't dare to guarantee that it would protect him fully.
Furthermore, he wasn't hearing a helmet. If, on the off chance several hairs came flying at him, that wasn't a fun situation to be in.
There were a total of five Brown-Haired Boars that came charging out of the woods. They were similar in size to Zhang Che's Wind Shadow Wolves. When they were charging together, their steps rang out like thunder, and looked pretty intimidating.
However, after working together as a team for some time, the Wind Shadow Wolves and the Fiery Scorpion had sufficient chemistry between them. They weren't afraid of exotic beasts of such a level at all.
The Wind Shadow Wolves were much faster than the Brown-Haired Boars. They approached the boars with lightning speed, fully displaying their agility. With only a few nimble movements, they disrupted the boars' formation, drastically lowering their speed.
The Wind Shadow Wolves were of the same quality as the Brown Haired Boars. Using their superior speed and agility, they forcibly kept their foes who were twice their number at the same spot, allowing the Fiery Scorpion to finish them off easily.
Pu, a faint sound rang out. One of the Brown Haired Boar was careless, and the Fiery Scorpion struck out with its incomparably well-trained stinger, stabbing deeply into its flowery orifice.
The Brown Haired Boar stiffened. Its eyes turned bright red and it let out a miserable cry. A clump of long and hard brown mane on its back shot out like a rain of arrows at the Fiery Scorpion.
Ding ding dang dang, a cluster of crisp sounds rang out. The hairs were unable to penetrate the Fiery Scorpion's carapace.
In the next moment, as the toxin the Fiery Scorpion injected into the Brown-Haired Boar took effect, the boar that was a whole tier lower in quality was shrouded in a red glow, collapsing on the ground and supplying several points of soul force to Zhang Che.
After that, the Fiery Scorpion exhibited its vulgar tactics to the extreme. Its glowing red stinger kept striking that indescribably important area and killed off the remaining Brown-Haired Boars that were held up by the Wind Shadow Wolves.
When the battle ended, Zhang Che almost roared out in laughter.
