Chapter 1: Swift Starlight
AN:
Hello everyone. It has been a long time since I last uploaded. Let me tell you whats up. Ive been going through a rough patch in the real world with my job being taxing due to the employee shortage, my bank account tettering on empty even though I work a lot of hours, and the fact that my stories time writing has been cut down signifacantly. I needed a break and I took one now im back and yes I have another story in a fandom outside owl house but this one is one that I would have never thought id write for… because I didn't know how good it was. Of course I am writing a my little pony fanfic doing a season by season followthrough with my oc who I named swift starlight but didn't realize that name was taken by another… similar character which is weird. But anyway I would like to present you my first my little pony fanfic and this one will start with what I call season 0 which is basically how and why my character gets invovled with the main plot.
In the forests north of ponyville the song of birds chirping ring out through the canopies of the tall trees. A warm breeze blows through the branches marking another beautiful summer day in equastria. It is in these woods that all manner of creatures great and small live.
The serene quiet of the woods is fractured by the trotting of hoofs clopping across the warm earth, a white skinned pony with a mane of the darkest midnight black runs as fast as his hooves can carry him, laughing all the way.
Hot on the ponys tail was a swarm of bees buzzing incredulously.
The pony turns a corner of the woods licking what was left of his crime from his lips then dashes northward. After a few minutes of running he stops and listens.
No buzzing.
The boy cheers his luck and scratches his hoof against the dirt merrily. He whinies to the sky in thanks for his luck.
He then notices the sun and feels worry enter his mind.
"Oh shoot, im late for my chores!" He spoke with a sense of urgency "pa's gonna kill me."
the boy trotted in the opposite direction of where he was running from and then made a sharp turn westward making great progress.
He passed through all the lovely greenery of the forest blissful ignoring the beauty of nature to avoid the scorn of his father.
Swift starlight's vision soon came to look upon his home. The high noon farm. It wasnt big and fancy but it had all a pony could want if they were happy with farming stuff. Which though it wasnt the life he wanted for himself Starlight couldn't fully hate the open range and easy lifestyle of a farm filly.
He crossed the bridge which seperated the family lands from the wild and immediately galloped up the hill which overlooked the families crop of wheat and barley. He then passed the house which pa made with his own hooves when Starlight was just a baby a most impressive feat especially due to the fact that he did it with no help.
The boy ran into the huge farmhouse which was also a project completed by his pa. The man was someone who thought if you were gonna do something then you got to do it yourself.
The boy crept toward the farmhouse darting his eyes back and forth looking for his pa. He should have been out in the fields by now.
If starlight was lucky the old horse would be using the restroom and he could sneak in undetected. It was just around the time when he would be starting his chores and who would say he hadn't already started.
Swift starlight entered the barn and then slowly closed the door. He then backpedaled while snickering.
"you're late boy," a stern voice from behind starlight spooked the boy.
"P-p-pa, fancy meeting you here." Starlight took a bowed stance with his hindlegs higher then his fore legs as he backed away from lowing black colt with a mane of fine silver.
Sunshine is someone who if you only heard there name would be very likely to surprise you. His disposition was never sunny or shiny. The man was all cold stares and few words.
He loomed over the young starlight baring down on him with that same disappointed look the boy has become all too accustomed.
"where were ya?" he asked not taking his cold gray eyes off the boy. "Don't lie,"
Starlight gulped then giggled nervously.
"pa, before you get angry I just want you to know that I was planning on being on time. It's just that I got distracted and a little hungry so I found this beehive and you know that I know that bees get all drowsy when smoke is around. So I made a small campfire to smoke out bees and–"
Sunshine stamped his hoof making a violent clank silencing starlight.
"So let me get this straight. You're late because you wanted honey? The same honey you could've gotten if you came home in the first place. Is that it?"
"yeah pa, but you don't understand. The honey we have doesn't taste as good as when it's fresh. Besides I wanted to go out and have some fun."
"have some fun? I think you have quite a bit of fun around the farm. Besides you shouldn't be going so far away from the farm. What if something happened to ya?" Sunshine voice sounded concerned but never lost that edge to it that would make you think he was done being mad.
"Ah pa, I don't see the harm in me going on a few adventures. Besides, its not like I know any other pony besides you and ma even though there is a whole town full of ponies a days trot from here."
"you don't need to worry about them other ponies. What you need to worry about Is your chores. There are fields that need ploughing and crops that need storing,"
"where do the crops go?" starlight raised an eyebrow at his father
"what a silly question. To market of course." sunshines nostrils flared slightly and his hooves scrapped against the wooden barn floor.
"but who takes them there. You never leave the farm and I definetly havent met anyone else who could take them?" all it took was one look in those metal colored eyes for all of starlights courage to fade.
"Boy you need to focus less on these dumb questions and more on finishing todays work. Now get a move on." sunshine trotted past starlight not meeting his eyes. He continued to the barn door before stopping and slighly turning his head.
"And for the love of pete wash yourself off properly. You still have honey on your lip." the door to the barn closed behind sunshine his exit leaving starlight with his head lowered.
The boy kicked up dust and then snorted. Why's pa gotten be like that ?
Eversince starlight was old enough to walk, his pa has told him not to leave the safety of the farm but he couldn't stay here forever he wanted to leave and have fun adventures in all the exotic lands of equestria. But none of that was gonna happen while he lived under Sunshine's roof.
no use complaining about it now, i'll finish my work and then if i'm lucky. Pa will let me go out before bedtime. Starlight ran his hoof over the dust the farm. He made his way to the river that served as the border between their farm and the outside world.
Between home and freedom. Starlight thought, his body submerging itself in the warm water. During the summer bathing in the river was so relaxing. When he was a little foal his ma would have to watch him because he would be so relaxed he'd fall asleep in the river and get pulled down the stream.
After washing himself down, the pony shook himself off and then trotted up to the farmhouse. His stomach began rumbling and he knew it was about time for a snack.
He entered the farm house his hooves clanking on the hardwood floor. His nose instantly picked up the scent of something good cooking… applepie, his favorite.
"Ma, im hungry, can I have a snack?" he called sweetly peeking into the kitchen. His eyes caught the sight of the pie hanging in the window cell as he licked his lips.
"Oh no you don't" a voice teased. "That pie is for dessert and not a moment sooner."
"Ma, can I please, have a small bite of it… please?" he begged whineying while his eyes went big for her.
"Oh you, you'll just have to wait for dinner like everyone else." she replied with a warm smile on her face. "but I will make you a sandwich."
the boy then snorted "okay"
"oh don't be fussy, the pie will be worth the wait. I promise." she replied grabbing the jars of peanut butter and jelly along with a loaf of bread from the bread box.
She then made up a sandwich for him cutting the crusts off and slicing it into triangles.
"Here you go starlight, enjoy." she then returned to the stove to check on dinner.
Starlight took a bite into his sandwich then moaned with pleasure. His mom could always make whatever he ate delicious and she knew how he liked it. Delilah dusk was one of the best mothers a foal could ask for.
The silver skinned pony flipped her blonde mane then giggled at her son. "good isn't it?"
"hmmhmm," starlight moaned in reply. He then swallowed smacking his lips in his satisfaction. "its the best, thanks ma."
delilah hummed to herself as she chopped some vegetables. "im glad you like it dear. I made it just the way you like it."
starlight leaned against table. Furrowing his brow when he thought about what happened at the barn.
"everything okay starlight?" delilah stood next to her son then patted his back.
"dad is being unreasonable. He still treats me like I was a little baby and wont let me be who I want to be."
"and who do you want to be starlight?"
"I don't know but I know I want to be more then a farmer who isnt even allowed to leave his land."
Delilah sighed taking her gaze out the window where her husband had already started pulling the blow. "your father… has his reasons for what he does."
"it feels like he's embarassed by me and doesn't want anyone to see me. "
Delilah wrapped her hooves around her son and then gently nuzzled his forehead. "your father… is not embarrassed of you. He loves you so much but you know that he has a hard time showing how much he cares."
"I guess youre right ma."
Delilah smiled as kissed her son on the forehead. "I know I am starlight now have some milk and get ready for work today."
"I just don't see why dad wont let me go to a town one day over. Why doesn't he trust me."
"starlight, he its not that he doesn't trust you. Its other ponies that he doesn't trust."
"but I want to see the world and how am I gonna do that if im stuck on a farm for my whole life."
delilah sighs once again then frowns. "listen starlight, ill make a deal with you. You be good and not get on your fathers nerves and ill talk to him about taking you to the sun festival, deal?"
Starlight hopped up with a smile. "really!? You mean it!?"
Delilah chuckled then rubbed his mane softly "of course I do. Mommas don't lie to their babies."
"oh my gosh, thank you ma! I promise to be good from now on? I cant thank you enough."
delilah leaned her cheek toward him and cleared her throat.
"ah mom, not that… its embarrassing."
"ahem,"delilah cleared her throat a second time, aggravted.
Starlight sighed and gave his mom a peck on the cheek.
Delilahs smile returned and then she walked off. "good boy, now I think that all you have to do today is put the crops in storage and when you come back in the house it will be dinner time."
"okay, but mom?"
"yes dear?"
"do you think dad will really let me go to the sun festival?"
Delilah froze for but a few seconds but it was more telling then if she said anything "sweetie, I promise I will try and make him see reason."
"okay ma, I love you."
"I love you too starlight, now and forever."
