Chapter 3: A talk between men

AN:

hey everyone how are you all doing. Im fine and finding out more about my little pony community. I was wondering if you guys if you could let me know what you think of this story I know not much is happening right now but this is the set up so thats understandable. Anyway please enjoy this story and I hope you all have a great rest of the summer.

The door behind starlight slammed with a deafening crash. He turned around at it and screamed then kicked up his hindlegs in fury.

He whinied and neighed bucking around his room.

After a few minutes his breath was unsteady and his hooves felt sore but that didn't stop him from pacing from one end of his room to the other.

The bare adornments didn't help the boys mood as all he had to entertain him were a couple stories book which he had read over a hundred times each and a small stuffed dragon which he had named bubby, who was the only thing close to a best friend he had.

He mumbled cruel words under his breath. He snorted and scrapped his hoof against the wooden floor.

Knock Knock.

"Go away!" Starlight sharply turned toward his door.

The door opened as quickly as it was said and entering the room was no other then sunshine whom had a dour look on his face.

"sit down boy." he commanded in an even voice.

Starlight huffed not bothering to meet his fathers gaze.

"ill stand." he stamped his hoof then sighed.

"very well then." Sunshine closed the door then walked to where he was face to face with his son. The stallion stood a whole head over his son and one look in those steely eyes would normally make the boy stop any of his misbehaving.

But not today.

It wasnt fair that he was kept locked up in this farm when he wanted to see the world around him. But he had to admit his pa did look displeased… not angry… just displeased.

Starlight steadying stance and bucked up to meet sunshines stare with one of his own which was hardy with his sky blue eyes.

"your actions at the dinner table were unacceptable."

"I. Don't. Care." Starlight responded in a slow and steady tone of voice.

Sunshine snorted in his sons face then his eyes became like daggers ready to pierce the boys heart.

"and that, is exactly why your grounded for one moon." sunshine bumped his son as he made his way to the door.

"thats fine! Its no different then being stuck on the farm."

"im warning you boy. Don't raise your voice at me."

starlight turned around to once again stare at his father and his dad did the same neither giving any ground in their stares.

Sunshine then did the unexpected and sat down. The stallion sighed and patted the spot on the floor nearest to him. "sit down boy," he said softly.

Starlight took a step back. Pa is never like this. The boy knew that his father was a man of rules and used to be listened to when he spoke. So to see him actually ask starlight to do something instead of demand it took the mare by surprise.

"okay." he replied after a moment of silence. The boy sat next to his father who looked up at his bookshelf which were adorned with family photos and pictures of starlight as a foal.

"do you know why im so hard on you?" sunshine asked once again in that soft tone.

Starlight shook his head looking up at his farm whose eyes softened slightly.

"when you were born. The doctor told me and your mother that you were very ill and that we may lose you. Your ma was devastated by the news and asked the doc if there was anything we could do but he said it was up to fate."

Starlight listened intently seeing that his fathers eyes began to glisten with water.

"I held you once before they took you to your first treatment and when I did I realized what it meant to love and care for someone else more then myself. I was a selfish man in my youth and I hurt a lot of folk who only wanted to be my friends. I felt like I hated myself and didn't deserve friendship because I had to do things for my pa that were for the greater good but also came at a great sacrifice."

starlight watches as a single tear rolls down sunshines cheek and then falls to the floor.

"you must understand that everything I do isnt to keep you imprisoned but to keep you safe. Do you understand boy?"

starlight nodded his head. "yeah pa, but what harm would it be if we went to ponyville its just a days ride from here."

"im sorry boy, but I cant allow that." sunshine replied a strange tone to his voice. If you didn't know any better youd think it was regret and pity.

"but pa, you cant keep me on the farm forever." Starlight pleaded.

The bigger stallion turned his gaze toward the boy and it returned to its naturally cold state as he said the words that the boy hated to here.

"I will for as long as I can. Possibly until my deathbed." he then rose "never ask to leave the farm again." the edge returned to his voice so naturally that anyone listening would think that all the kindness and openness that he showed earlier was an illusion.

"I wish you werent my dad." starlight mumbled but loud enough for sunshines ears to perk up.

"what did you say boy? Speak up." he ordered his nostrils flaring.

"I said I wish you werent my dad!" the boy screamed making his room shake. He could swear that his anger made him stronger. The hateful look in his eyes could curdle milk and the way his eyes flashed with malice one would think he was on the cusp of a violent uprising.

"im the only father you have and ever will have. Don't forget that boy."

"I never want to talk to you again!" Starlight returned his fathers cold response with firey fury.

Sunshine flared his nostrils then snorted turning his back to his son. He opened the door and turned to face his son holding the door open.

"well, if you feel that way then you can be mad in your room for the next three moons and I expect you to apologize to your mother tommorrow morning. Until then don't bother leaving your room."

the door slammed leaving starlight in a more furious state then before his dad came into his room. The boy kicked up his legs hitting the walls with clunk and snorting and whinying as he jumped around and threw a temper tantrum for the ages.

Once again he was out of breath and felt his body close to collapse as he layed down and could only look up at his window as the moon was full tonight showing the shadowy pony which by legend was the fallen princess nightmare moon.

The boy could only utter one senteance before he had made up his mind.

"im done living under his roof. Im running away and enjoying my life from now on."
