GETTING READY

It was in July in 1991 when both Draco and Alexa received their letter to Hogwarts. They were happy and nervous at the same time. What would Hogwarts look like? Which house would they be sent to? Would they make a lot of friends? Would they be good wizards? They couldn't wait to go. Narcissa accompanied the two little children to the Diagon Alley to buy everything that they required and was necessary for the start of the first term at the magical school.

First, they went to Ollivander's to get their wands. After answering some questions from the owner, he handed Alexa a hornbeam wood wand with a phoenix feather core, flexible, of an average size. The moment that she grabbed it in her hand she knew: it was made for her. Draco got a wand made of hawthorn wood and with a unicorn hair core, reasonably springy and a little bit shorter than Alexa's.

Afterwards, they went to buy the books, the uniforms, a cauldron and a telescope between other things. Everything was needed for their first year at Hogwarts. They could also bring a pet, to choose between an owl, a cat or a toad. Draco got an eagle owl, while Alex got a Siamese cat.

- It suits you - said Alex to Draco while they were waiting outside of the store, she was smiling.

- Suit me? Why? - Draco looked at her with curiosity.

- I'm not sure…It just does!

- Mmmm, whatever. I just hope it doesn't give me any trouble…Father will…- he looked sombre. He always did when he talked about his father. Alex felt awfully bad for him. He wasn't a bad boy, not really, but the fear Lucius inflicted on him…It was too much to bear for an eleven-year-old boy.

- Kill you? He'll have to come right through me if he wants to kill you. And I tell you…I'm a really tough cookie - Alex said trying to pull out muscle, which made Draco laugh alongside her.

- That would be all - Narcissa came out of the store - We should be heading home now. It's almost dinner time, and you know your father doesn't like to wait.

- It's not like he liked anything…- whispered Alex to Draco while they followed Narcissa.

On September 1st, with everything already packed, the Malfoy's with Alexa went to Kings Cross Station to catch the Hogwarts Express.

- Platform nine and three-quarters…I wonder how that works - Alex was excited to go to Hogwarts. She was going to learn a lot of things about magic and other stuff, and she was going to be away from Lucius for a long time, which also made her cheer. It was probably the first good thing that happened to her ever since the Malfoy's took her away from Remus.

"Uncle Remus…", she used to think a lot about him. Would he be okay? For the first months she tried and tried to convince Lucius to let her visit him, or at least call him. But he refused every time. It was on rare occasions when she was able to write a letter and send it to him. And it was even rarer when she got to read Remus's letters. If Lucius was around when the letter arrived, he would throw it to the fire. Only when he left the room could she try to recompose the burned letter. It was a living hell. But at least she wasn't alone. Draco was the one that had it worse, no doubt.

- Aren't you excited, Draco? - she asked the boy who was next to her. He was pulling his trunk crestfallen. He looked like he was absorbed in some thoughts. - Hellooooo? Earth calling to Draco, are you there, sir? - she lightly punched his arm, which made him react.

- Sorry, what did you say?

- Nothing really important…Are you okay? - She worried about him. Of course she did. He was her family.

- I'm just wondering…Do you think that I'll get into Slytherin? - Draco looked concerned when he looked at her. And not because he didn't like the idea of being sorted out in Slytherin. It was the other way around: he was terrified he was going to get into some other house. - It's just…I don't want to disappoint him…

- Nonsense! I'm sure you'll be fine! Especially if I'm sorted out in Gryffindor…He'll have a heart attack. - she pretended to faint, which made Draco burst out laughing.

- Draco! - Lucius turned around with all the anger reflected in his eyes - I surely hope you don't behave like a little brat at Hogwarts, I wouldn't want to receive any complaints from any professor…- threatening. That's how he always talked. Liked if you dared to breathe without his consent, he would erase you from earth.

Draco grew silent. They both kept walking behind Lucius and Narcissa. She had joked about which house she would be sorted out in. She wanted to make Draco smile and forget about his fears, at least for a moment, but deep down, she was truly concerned. If she was sorted out in any house that wasn't Slytherin, Lucius wouldn't have a heart attack…He would have a rage attack. And knowing how she didn't care about his punishments, he would throw everything at Draco. That way he could hurt her. But what if she got sorted out in Slytherin? What then? She had met enough Slytherins to know that, roughly, they were not very nice. Lucius was an awful human being and an even worse father. Narcissa wasn't that bad, but she was married to Lucius after all. She had heard about Bellatrix Lestrange, Narcissa's sister, and truth be told, she was terrified of her. Lucius had friends, more like lackeys, and they were all Slytherins. She didn't like any of them. If she was sorted out in Slytherin…would that mean that, deep down, she was just like them? No, she wasn't a bad person. She had a temper, but she wasn't evil. Neither was Draco. "Just because an apple is rotten, it doesn't mean that the whole tree is…Merlin was a Slytherin, and he was a great wizard. Tonks's mum was also a Slytherin, and she was pretty cool…And so was my mum…".

Her mum…She died when Alex was barely one year old. She didn't remember anything about her. And she didn't know anything about her either. Remus never talked about her or about her dad. All he ever told her about them it's that they both died when she was a baby and their Hogwarts house. Eden was a Slytherin. Sirius was a Gryffindor, just like Remus. "They were both uncle Remus's best friends, must have been pretty nice people". She couldn't keep thinking about it. She wasn't going to be able to change it, so…

They arrived at a wall between platforms and Draco and Alex looked at each other in shock when they saw Lucius and Narcissa walk right through it and vanish. They didn't think twice and followed them. They sled at a new platform. The nine and three-quarters platform. It was milling with people. Families with their children. There was a scarlet steam engine, the Hogwarts Express.

- Woah - both Draco and Alex said at the same time. They looked at each other grinning. They were going to a magic school. To learn magic. Together. Away from Malfoy's manor, away from Lucius. It was amazing.

They were placing their trunks inside the train with the help of Draco's parents. Soon, they said their goodbyes (although Alex's goodbyes were pretty short) and they headed inside the train. They went to the back of the train, where they found an empty compartment. Soon other students joined them.

- My name is Draco Malfoy - he extended his hand towards the new students.

- I'm Vincent Crabbe. And he is Gregory Goyle - they both hands shook Draco and then proceed to look at Alex.

- I'm Alexa Black - and that was the first time that happened. They looked at her surprised, even with fear. - Is everything okay?

Before they could answer, another student rushed in. He was chubby and had a look of concern and fear.

- Where do you think you are going, fatty? - Crabbe, who was also chubby, said.

- I'm…I'm sorry, I'm…I'm looking for Trevor, he is my…- the boy was clearly intimidated by the others who stand right in front of him.

- "I'm I'm"…do you even know how to talk properly? - this time it was Goyle the one to talk.

- Get out of here, fatty – Draco…of course. He had been raised by a bully. It was all he knew. And even though his mother loved him and Alex showed him kindness, it was the fear Lucius inflicted on him that prevailed.

The poor boy got out of the compartment and Alex followed, pushing around the three bullies.

- Alex, where are you going? - Draco was confused…what had he done to make Alex upset? Was it because of that boy? She didn't know him, so she shouldn't care, right?

- Have fun with your new friends. They didn't seem to like me, anyway.

And just like that she walked outside the compartment and headed to the lost boy, who was still around there, looking for Trevor.

- Hey - she was soft, but still the boy jumped from his seat. - I'm sorry about…whatever that was. You were looking for someone, right? Maybe I can help.

- Really? - she looked nice, but he wasn't used to it, unless there was a purpose to laugh at him. But somehow, he felt like he could trust her. - I'm looking for my toad, his name is Trevor.

- That's a curious name for a toad, but it's pretty cool! Okay, let's do this. You keep searching around here, and I'll go in the other direction, see if one of us can find it.

And that's what they did. They looked for the boy's toad, and other students joined along. After 20 minutes of searching, Alex found the toad under a seat. She went to find the boy.

- Hey! I found Trevor! - she said as she handed the toad to him - He is pretty sneaky, you better keep an eye on him.

- Oh, thank you! Thank you so much! - he hugged the toad against his chest - I'm Neville, by the way…Neville Longbottom - he was shy as he told his name. It was clear that he wasn't used to making Friends.

- Nice to meet you, Neville. I'm Alexa Black, but you can call me Alex - and there it was again. That same look that Crabbe and Goyle had given to her.

Before she could say anything else, Neville walked the other way. Was there something wrong with her name? Did it have something to do with her blood family, the Blacks? She didn't have much time to keep wondering. The train was already arriving at Hogsmeade.

- First years! First years over here! - Alex walked out of the train to meet with an enormous man. He looked like a giant. Was he a giant? "It would be really cool". - My name is Hagrid and I will guide you to Hogwarts.
