Starfleet trains its cadets for many things, but chasing a small child on the bridge somehow wasn't included in any curriculum. That's why the bridge crew failed to catch the running girl. They were trained to be in war situations, fighting with hostile aliens, several combat-types, and everything looked easier, than catching a simple child. Well, the little girl wasn't very fair to them, because she was able to avoid any tactical maneuver. Moreover she was small enough to run under the consoles, causing bruises, and bumps to her chasers, and some sparkling damage to the consoles.
Deanna Troi had fun, despite feeling the little girl's despair. She sensed the surprise, the frustration and the anger of the bridge crew, and the fright of Captain Picard, and Commander Seven of Nine. Both of them were afraid of children, and they were sitting frozen in their seats, with straight faces. What a pair! Deanna couldn't decide, that feel sorry for them, or give them a heartfelt laugh. But she felt sorry for the crew and the girl, she stood up, and walked down to the consoles. The bridge crew was full of singles, so no wonder none of them could handle a child. She crouched down and held out her arms for a hug.
"Come to Deanna, sweetie!" she said, and in the next moment the little girl was in her arms.
"Mommy!" she cried, and looked at the woman hopefully.
"I am not your mommy!" Deanna caressed the little girl. "Who is your mommy?"
"Mommy!"
"Jean-Luc!" She turned to the captain, who relaxed, as the child was safe in the counselor's arms. "Do you know this child? She barely speaks yet, I don't know if she can tell who her mother is."
The captain shook his head.
"I don't know! There are not a single parent with child aboard this ship! Is she a human child at all?"
"She seems like a human," Deanna answered, while constantly caressing the crying girl. "What's your name, sweetie?"
The little girl didn't answer, just cried for her mommy further.
"Deanna, please bring her to the sickbay, maybe Beverly could say something about her!" Picard asked her politely. "I wouldn't be happy with another Q ..."
"She is a human child, Jean-Luc!" Deanna smiled on him.
"Are you sure? She came here five minutes ago, and has already destroyed half the bridge!"
He pointed to the bridge crew, who were busy to repair the broken parts of the consoles, running diagnostics, and tried to restore the damage, which were practically caused by them.
"It is normal for her age! It would have only taken my daughter two minutes!"
"Bring her to the sickbay! Please!"
"Yes, of course!" she replied, and walked up to the commanding area, where she couldn't bother the busy crewman, to reach the turbolift.
For her surprise, the little girl stopped crying, and suddenly became very happy.
"Mommy!" she laughed, and held out her arm toward the Commander. "Mommy!"
The bridge crew's shock was nothing, comparing to Seven of Nine's.
