Healin' Hospital had never been a place of chaos. Quite the opposite, it was meant to be a serene and positive world filled with spirits that brought healing to other dimensions. However, today that had all come to change.
The usually pale blue sky was now clouded over in grays and blacks, as swarms of palm sized spirits made their way in to take over the area. Alone they would just be pests - small, smokey black orbs with white eyes that drained energy and life from their surroundings. However, in such a large group they were more of a menace. Daiboru, they were called, spirits from the Daiboru Kingdom, and they had come to launch an attack on Healin' Hospital.
Left and right citizens of the world were being snatched from the ground and carried away, unable to effectively fight the army with their small numbers. The main area, the castle, was being ravaged from the inside out with daiboru in the process of ransacking it for healing goods. It seemed that everyone was helpless to stop the massive attack. Everyone, that is, except a small angel-like spirit crouched under a rock in hiding.
Doing her best to be sneaky, the spirit peered her head out from under her hiding place, staring at the carnage taking place in front of her. She was doing her best to remain strong, knowing that as of now she might be one of the only ones left. However, in truth she was terrified. She had never seen this many diaboru at once before, and at this rate they had no chance of taking Healin' Hospital back.
Not without help.
After watching briefly, she turned her head to whisper to the space next to her.
"Dai, are you still there?"
In response, a second spirit emerged from hiding next to her. He was much different in appearance to his sister - a dark pink, demon-like spirit with a small blue nurse hat. He was trembling visibly as he came to join her in watching.
"Y-yeah, I'm here... What're we gonna do, Kirai?"
For a moment, there was no response, as the two of them simply stared in anxiety and sadness at the destruction in front of them. However, eventually Kirai spoke again.
"We need to find the pretty cures," she said in a determined whisper. "They're the only ones who can help us now."
She proceeded to take a small, clawed paw and reach into the dirt behind them. There rested a tiny gem-like orb, shining despite the lack of light in their space. This was their ticket out - a teleportation device that could only be used once, and would send them straight to earth.
"Are you ready?"
Her companion, Dai, swallowed thickly before nodding his agreement. Thus, together they placed their paws on the device and cracked it open with their claws. It shook once, twice, and then in a flash of pink light the two of them disappeared, leaving behind them a fallen world.
In Japan, in the city of Chiyukoe, the atmosphere was much different. The morning sun shone over a cool spring day, touching calm neighborhoods with neat houses. One of these houses in particular was home to someone who was yet more important than she realized.
The sounds of clicking keys filled the room as Yawara typed away on her computer. Her room, scattered with piles of stuffed animals, was otherwise silent except for this noise. This was how most of her mornings went - sitting at the computer and browsing her favorite online forum boards. These in particular were "menhera" boards; people came here to talk about their struggles, share vent art, and ask for advice. She was fairly well known there due to how much time she spent advising and comforting others. It was something she loved to do. Something that gave her a sense of purpose.
At the moment she was chatting with someone who had asked for advice about a mother who was invading their space and going through their private belongings. It wasn't something Yawara had much experience with - she never knew her mother or father, after all, and she lived alone. Nonetheless, she'd done her best to be a source of light for them. After hitting send on her final reply she leaned back in her chair and smiled softly, before turning to look at the clock on her desk.
8:00 AM
Yawara sighed quietly. Was it already that late? It had been still dark out when she woke up, as she hadn't slept well last night. Nightmares again. Nightmares she couldn't quite remember, but that left her with a sense of dread and memories of the past.
After a moment, she chose to shake the nightmares out of her mind, and rolled her desk chair over to the window. It was nice and sunny out today, a beautiful spring morning. Spacing out, she stared quietly at the houses across the street, taking note of the way the sun looked dancing across the street.
'...How long has it been since I last felt the sun?'
Another thought she proceeded to shove out of her mind.
"Kirai... where are we?"
The two ambitious spirits had made it to earth, certainly. However, they now found themselves in what appeared to be someone's front garden, surrounded by various colorful flowers. Kirai shook the dirt off her head before peering around in uncertainty.
"Uh... I don't know. But we made it! So it's time to start looking!"
"E-eh? How? We don't even have a place to stay."
"Then we'll look for one! Let's go... that way!"
Kirai gestured a paw in a random direction and then hopped to her tiny feet, proceeded to start marching away. Dai stared after her nervously. He wasn't sure about this, not at all, especially with their never having been on earth before. However, not wanting to be left behind, he reluctantly stood up and ran after her.
After a bit of walking, the two found themselves in the front yard of the next house over. Kirai paused and took a look around. She wanted desperately to be the leader here and to look like she knew what she was doing, but in truth she had no idea where to go or what they would do next to find the pretty cures. Not exactly ideal. After surveying her surroundings, she lit up and pointed to the nearby window.
"Look! Someone's there!"
Dai followed her gaze. Sure enough, a figure with short brown hair could be seen at the window, staring across the street. She didn't seem to be paying attention to them at the moment.
"We can ask her for help!" Kirai exclaimed, nodding vigorously.
"W-What?! We can't do that! What if she's dangerous? What if she's with the daiboru?" Dai trembled nervously just at the thought of their getting caught after just getting here.
"Don't worry about it! She looks nice. People from the daiboru kingdom never look nice, do they?"
"Kirai, wait!"
It was too late. Before Dai could stop her, Kirai had flapped her wings and floated up to the window, before tapping one clawed paw on the glass.
Knock knock knock.
Yawara blinked. She had been spacing out for so long that the sudden noise startled her a bit. At first she assumed it was someone visiting a neighbor. However, as she backed up a little and looked around, she saw it - a small, angel-like creature standing on her windowsill. After meeting her gaze, they waved.
"Hi!"
Yawara let out a shriek. Jolting backwards caused her rolling chair to fly backwards and hit her bed. What was that? Was it an animal? But it just talked to her! Animals couldn't talk, right? They didn't look like that either. This couldn't be real right?
The creature looked mildly offended at her reaction, and she heard them talk again. "Hey! What's that for? Are you okay?"
Yawara grabbed her sweater at the hem and wrung it nervously. She did take her meds today, right? She wasn't hallucinating? As she continued to watch, she was shocked to see a second one appear, a reddish-pink one in the appearance of a cartoon-like demon. It crawled up at the windowsill, and seeing her face, looked startled and began talking to the other one.
"Kirai, stop! She looks scared!"
"Eh? Scared? Why would she be scared?"
"Oh no... J-just - let me, okay?"
The demon one then turned to look at her and bowed, which surprised Yawara.
"Uh, miss! I'm sorry to bother you! We've never been to earth before and were looking for shelter! Uh, I'm sorry to have scared you, but... but if you could let us in we'd appreciate it! Thank you!"
With that, he grabbed the others' wing to pull her down into a bow as well.
...If this was a hallucination, it was the strangest one Yawara had had in a very long time.
Continuing to wring her shirt, she debated her actions. For talking creatures she'd never seen the likes of before they seemed very polite, that's for sure. Despite looking strange they also looked overall harmless - small, no weapons, no threatening features. So... it couldn't hurt to let them in, especially if they weren't real, right?
"...I hope I don't regret this." She whispered. "I don't feel so well..."
"So, pretty cure... who are they, exactly?"
Yawara now sat across from Dai and Kirai on her bed, listening to them explain where they were from and why they were here. Now that she was over the initial shock she actually found them very sweet. They were siblings, it seemed, and very different ones at that.
Kirai lit up at the question. "The pretty cures are powerful warriors! They have special powers that they can help us get rid of the daiboru with!"
Dai nodded in agreement. "It's been a long time since any were around... but we were always told in Healin' Hospital to come to earth and look for them if we're in trouble."
Yawara nodded slowly. She felt rather bad for these two - they seemed rather far out of their depth, and had just lost everything they knew.
"I'm really sorry... I can't imagine how hard it is to lose your home world like that." paused for a moment before continuing. "I'm not sure how to find these pretty cures, but... if you need a place to stay, you can stay here with me if you want! I don't live with anyone else, so it's not a bother."
"Really?!" Dai and Kirai spoke at the same time, bouncing with excitement.
"Thank you so much, uh..." Kirai trailed off in confusion. "What's your name, actually?"
"Ah!" Yawara couldn't help but smile. "Kisagi Yawara is my name."
"Thank you, Yawara-san!"
"E-eh..."
First name basis already, it seemed.
After a moment, Dai spoke up as well. "Will you help us find the pretty cures, too?"
Immediately, anxiety coursed through Yawara's body, and she shook her head violently. "N-no! No, I could never do that, I..."
She trailed off and then looked down, now feeling embarrassed. Dai and Kirai now looked confused, and she began to stumble over her words trying to explain.
"Well, I... I just - I just don't really... I haven't - I haven't gone outside in a long time." She paused to gather herself before continuing. "...4 years, actually. I haven't left the house for 4 years. I sort of... got scared a long time ago, and stopped going outside."
"Eh? Isn't that kind of weird? OW!" Kirai let out a cry, as Dai kicked her before she could continue. He then took over in her place.
"It's okay, Yawara-san. If you're not comfortable going outside we won't force you. But... thank you anyway for letting us stay!"
Kirai nodded in agreement, rubbing her leg and looking rather miffed.
Yawara smiled, relieved that they seemed to understand. She felt rather bad for responding how she did, but the idea of leaving for the first time in years truly did scare her. It would mean changing everything in the span of just a few hours.
It made her happy to be able to help these two out. In truth, she hadn't felt any sense of purpose like this in a very long time. Day in day out she sat at her desk, her only pastime being buying plushies and talking to others online. Wake up, take meds, use the computer, go to bed, rinse and repeat. Knowing that she could now bring some light to someone in person filled her with a joy she hadn't felt in a long time.
"Well, would you guys like something to eat? I'm sure you're hungry after coming such a long way!"
"Yes, please!" Kirai exclaimed, and Dai nodded in agreement. Thus, the two floated after her into the kitchen.
Yawara now sat at her computer once more - it seemed like all she knew how to fill her time with, even with others here. Dai and Kirai were exploring her room, often exclaiming how cute they found certain things. It was true that Yawara had put a lot of effort into personalizing her bedroom over the years - she had light pink walls with white floral patterns around the top, little flowers and bunnies hanging from her cieling, and of course several stuffed animals lining every surface.
As she clicked away on the keyboard, Dai came over to the desk and watched curiously as she typed.
"What're you doing?"
Yawara turned and smiled at him as she explained. "This is called the menhera board. It's a forum where people come to talk about their struggles and share art. I spend a lot of time on here... I just like to help people and let them know someone cares about them."
Dai nodded, and a smile crossed his face as well. "You have a very kind heart, Yawara-san."
Feeling happy, Yawara turned back and started to click through to show the art section. "This is where people share art about things they struggle with. It's called vent art, it..."
She trailed off. Suddenly, a strange feeling had started to course through her body. It was almost as if she was being drained. Weakness was spreading through every limb, as well as a dull ache that kept getting stronger.
Dai immediately saw the change on her face and became worried. "Yawara-san, what's wrong?"
"I... I don't feel so well..."
Suddenly, Kirai came stumbling onto the desk with them, with a very urgent expression. "Dai! It's the daiboru! They're here!"
"Eh?! Here? How could they have found earth so soon?"
Kirai shook her head to indicate she didn't know, before turning to Yawara. "Yawara-san, you need to go! If you stay around them anymore they could hurt you!"
Yawara's eyes widened. "Eh?! I can't do that. I can't leave, I can't... agh!" She clutched her stomach and stopped again, as a sharp pain punched through her gut.
"Yawara, please," Dai pleaded, "we don't want you to get hurt! We have to go somewhere safe!"
Yawara looked at the two of them with a panicked expression. She didn't want to leave. She had been safe in this house for 4 years, and she wasn't about to let that change. However, she could tell that the two of them were serious, and if it was true that this could get worse...
"...O-Okay. I'll go. Just let me get some stuff."
Dragging herself up from her chair, Yawara stumbled over to her bed and grabbed a small pink backpack off the top. Hands shaking, she began to pile anything she felt might be needed into it - a water bottle, a snack, a small stuffed rabbit, and her med case. After zipping it closed, she turned to them and nodded.
"I'm ready. Let's go."
Step by nervous, shaky step, Yawara walked down the sidewalk. The spring sun almost felt blinding - it had been so long since she was under it. Dai and Kirai sat on her shoulders, encouraging that it was going to be okay. She didn't feel as if that was true - she was afraid. Very afraid. However, she wanted to trust them, so she kept going.
Eventually the three of them approached a small park. Yawara vaguely remembered this place. Oftentimes gatherings were held here by a local hospital, where sick children could spend time outside and visit with friends. However, as they came closer, it became apparent that something was very wrong.
"Look!" Kirai exclaimed.
The park, usually fairly active, was now covered in the bodies of collapsed parents and children. Hovering over them were dozens of small black spirits, seemingly made of smoke, dancing around them and draining what seemed to be a white light from their bodies.
"It's the daiboru!" Kirai said, "they're draining life from those people!"
Yawara tensed up, hearing her heartbeat in her ears. She was totally unprepared for this, and she didn't know what she could possibly do in this circumstance.
"Stay back Yawara-san," said Dai, "we'll go and help them."
Thus, as Yawara backed against a nearby building, Dai and Kirai brandished their claws and made their way towards the group of daiboru.
Immediately the daiboru noticed the two spirits, and started to make their way towards them. As Yawara watched, the two started clawing at the ones nearest, as well as shooting what seemed to be small pink spells. However, they very soon became overwhelmed - there were only two of them and the daiboru spirits never seemed to end. Eventually, they ended up diving behind a bush trying to keep them at bay, unable to fully fight all of them.
Yawara's ears were ringing. Her heart beat desperately in her chest. What could she do? Her new friends were in danger and she didn't know how to help. Eyes wide, she clutched her small backpack to her chest, staring paralyzed at the cloud of spirits attacking Dai and Kirai.
What could she do?
...She had to do something.
Slowly, she began to pull away from the building behind her and take steps forward. She didn't know what she planned to do - fight, distract, or even just grab them and run - but these were her friends. These spirits were the first real friends she'd made in years, and if they were in trouble, she needed to step up and help them no matter what.
Suddenly, a blinding light emerged from her backpack, startling her and causing her to jump. Confused, she opened the top with shaking hands and pulled out the source of the light - her pill case? It was glowing brightly, something she wasn't even sure it was supposed to do. In response, Dai and Kirai suddenly became distracted, staring at each other with side eyes.
"Dai, do you feel that? There's a pretty cure nearby?"
As the two of them scanned the area frantically for the source, they saw it - Yawara standing confused, holding a brightly shining pill case. Immediately Kirai pulled forward slightly to call out to her.
"Yawara, it's you! You're a pretty cure!"
"W-What?!" Yawara looked rapidly between the case and Kirai. "What am I supposed to do?"
"Tap the case twice!"
Confused, but willing to trust her, Yawara put her bag down, held up the case and tapped twice on the cover.
The change was instantaneous - the case glowed brightly and became enveloped in light, then changed shape. Before her was now a shining white heart shaped case, covered in blue, pink, and purple decorations.
"Hold it out!" called Kirai, "Just do it! You'll know what to do!"
Yawara felt this must be the most insane situation she'd ever encountered in her life. However, suddenly, she felt a strange determination and sense of confidence. Kirai was right - she knew what to do. She stood up straight, held the case above her head, and said the words that came to mind.
"Pretty Cure hospital charge! Love love let's go!"
Immediately Yawara found herself enveloped in a strange pink forcefield. Rising above the ground she felt her body glowing and changing - her hair changed shape and color, her outfit transformed into something new, and a halo appeared above her head. Spinning, as she came back down to the ground, she was someone completely new.
"Loving, soft, and kind - the pretty cure of change, Cure Healing!"
Suddenly, she seemed like she had snapped out of something strange, and fully realized that her appearance had completely changed.
"E-Eh?! What happened?"
However, she had no time to think about the transformation sequence. Now that she was Cure Healing, the daiboru immediately noticed the new presence and began to swarm towards her. Panicking, she did the first thing that came to mind.
Jump.
Jumping up, she found her body soaring through the air at proportions she hadn't expected at all, eventually landing on the roof of the building behind her. This, too, led immediately to confusion.
"What? How did I do that?"
"This is the power of pretty cure, Healing!" exclaimed Kirai from the ground. She and Dai had how moved away to watch, and seemed very excited.
As Yawara stood up, she saw the spirits were continuing to advance towards her. At first she though she might as well still be helpless - however, as she watched, she was once again filled with a sense of determination. She knew what to do.
As the first spirit advanced, she spun around and kicked as hard as she could, landing square on the spirits and causing them to dissipate. Again as more advanced she lashed out with her fist, causing more to disappear. One by one she kept going. Kick after lunch after kick, she took them out one by one.
The daiboru soon seemed to realize they were losing, and as such, changed tactics. Swarming together, they began to pile on top of each other, eventually forming one giant spirit.
"Eh?!" Yawara felt panicked again. The small ones were easy enough to attack physically, but this one was huge. However, she now heard Dai's nervous voice cry out from below.
"You have a weapon, Healing! You can use it!"
Yawara realized then that the case she'd used to transform was now in her dress pocket. Pulling it out, the knowledge came to her - she nodded, and held it out in front of her.
"Healing arrow, injection of love!"
Immediately her case transformed - she now found herself holding a bow and a large syringe shaped at the handle like an arrow. As naturally as if she'd been doing it her entire life she turned, drew back the syringe on the bow, aimed at the giant daiboru... and fired.
The syringe hit the mass of spirits square in the face. It let out a shrill cry, before slowly dissipating into a black mist - and at last it was gone.
Cure Healing stares at where it had just been, as her bow turned back into a heart shaped case in her hand. She couldn't believe she'd just done that - she, a shut-in who hadn't been outside like this in years, had just defeated a monster.
Suddenly, she remembered Dai and Kirai, and immediately turned to jump down from the building. Landing on the street, she ran towards the bush where the two had been hiding.
"Are you guys okay? Are you hurt?"
Immediately the two of them jumped up into her arms, chattering excitedly about what just happened as if they'd never been distressed at all.
"I can't believe you just did that!"
"You're really a pretty cure!"
"This is so cool!"
A relieved smile crossed her face - they were safe. Her friends were safe. As Healing turned to look up, she could see the citizens that had been collapsed at the park were all waking up. They seemed confused as to what had happened, but overall weren't harmed. As she watched, Healing smiled happily, her eyes starting to well up. Dai noticed this, and seemed concerned.
"Are you okay, Healing?"
Healing looked down at him, tears still in her eyes, and a smile on her face.
"I'm just... so happy that everyone is safe."
