Some girl's party
A/N This one is about Alex and Kelly at a high school party, they've met but Alex knows her as James' little sister. We'll just pretend they're the same age for this one and is set before the Kenny Lee incident.
Midvale, Earth-38 - 2006
Alex had finally managed to get out of the house without Kara following her, it was her house party and she hadn't wanted to bring her annoying little sister. Plus she'd probably do something weird and alien and make her reputation literally fall through the ground. Alex couldn't risk that kind of embarrassment so she'd snuck out of the house when she was supposed to be babysitting Kara, whilst her mom went to the store. She was sixteen, she didn't need a babysitter, plus she was literally bullet proof - how in danger could she possibly be?
She heard the music before she saw the lights. The loud thumping of hip hop music vibrated the sidewalk as Alex took hastened steps around the corner of the street and the full front of the house in question came in view. Teenagers she knew and some she didn't poured out of the front door as a loud cheering went up through the house. One girl took two steps in ginormous heels and threw up on the lawn, then a guy who was partially through the kitchen window was deposited out in the hedge. In the awe and amazement of it all Alex took another step forwards and braced herself for the overwhelming noise she was about to experience. As she walked through the door and into the main room where utter chaos was ensuing - apparently she was a few hours late to the party - she immediately regretted what she was wearing, she felt hideously underdressed.
There were girls in cocktail dresses that showed far too much thigh and they had heels, they also had jocks drooling all over them. Shaking her head Alex looked down at her red plaid shirt and ripped black jeans, she was wearing combat boots, they kind of had a heel. She told herself she was pretty and turned into the kitchen of the house. "Oh my God, what am I seeing here? Did Danvers manage to get out of the house?" James called to her from behind the keg, he was three years older, a total smartass and on the basketball at college. The only real reason he was here was because his best friend was Superman, and the senior guys had invited him to try and get in on whatever drug they thought Superman was using. He was still fairly new, and the high school jocks had their own ideas.
Alex rolled her eyes and took a cup from James, sipping the beer that she really didn't like but tolerated for 'the look.' "I snuck out, left Kara on her own. She can handle herself for one night. What's going on anyway?" She asked, trying to steer the conversation into more cooler territory. A 'yo Jimmy' was heard rather loudly behind her from a group of boys that looked like they belonged at a frat house rather than a high school party.
James laughed at the way she was looking at the beer and moved around her to the other side of the kitchen island and was about to leave the room before adding, "have a look around for yourself Danvers. Oh and by the way, Josie isn't here, or I couldn't find her anyway." Alex internally cursed herself for not calling her best friend earlier, and now she was here, alone. Secretly she kinda wished she'd stayed at home with Kara, at least that why she'd get to watch a movie she actually liked and drink something other than keg beer. It was watery and not even strong enough to get anyone tipsy, there was no point being here if she wasn't going to loosen herself up a bit first. She walked around the kitchen a few more times and avoided the stares from people far above her popularity status before deciding to go to bathroom. At least in there no one was looking at her.
The downstairs bathroom door was making sounds that didn't exactly correlate with a place Alex wanted to insert herself into, so she found herself venturing upstairs. Now, if you're sensible, you block off the upstairs portion of your house before you have a party, so you at least have somewhere clean to sleep that night so that when you leave the clean-up to the next morning before your parents get home. And also so that people don't have sex in your bed. Taking the steps one at a time she reached the landing and was heading for the bathroom when she heard giggling coming from one of the bedrooms. It didn't sound like your usual make out session between juniors, it sounded like a group girls who were gossiping about the forward of the football team.
Alex approached the door slowly and opened it, inside were a group of about five or six girls, some of whom she recognised from her Spanish and English classes, a couple she'd spotted in the hallways before, and one she knew to be James' sister Kelly. She hadn't known Kelly was going to be here. James would've told Alex she was here, but he didn't know that they'd met. And in fact they'd only really met once; Alex was in detention for something Kara had done by accident and Kelly had happened to walk in the exact minute the teacher had walked out. Alex didn't quite know why but she'd been thinking about that particular event everyday this week, and now here she was standing in the doorway and facing Kelly their eyes locking for a tiny moment before their gaze was broken by an outburst of giggles by the girls who hadn't noticed Alex's presence in the room.
"Um, hi. Can I hang out in here with you guys? My friends aren't here." Alex said, making the girl with her back to her jump which made the others laugh, except Kelly, who followed Alex around the room until she sat down on the other side of the circle they'd formed. Everyone there seemed really nice and everything was going swimmingly until someone decided to play Truth or Dare...
"So Kelly? Truth or Dare?" A girl called Jessica asked, as they were going around the group anticlockwise Alex had so far avoided being asked. In a way she loved and hated Truth or Dare, it was kind of exciting wondering what kind of secrets other people were going to spill. But she hated being asked herself, because she didn't know anything, she hadn't done anything. She didn't have a crush on anyone and she'd never had a boyfriend; it was quite difficult to get one when you don't like any of them and you have to look out for your adopted sister. But when Kelly's name was mentioned she looked up, she didn't know why, she just did. Somehow that name meant someone more to her now than it had last week.
"Truth." Kelly said looking strangely confident, like anything could ask her would be a walk in the park. Like she knew she had nothing on the others. Then the question came bouncing back to her and she felt stupid for forgetting that it was even an option. "Who do you have a crush on? We know you do, this week you've been walking around like a zombie. So who is it? Oh is it Brad? I bet it's Brad." She whispered to the girl - Lucy - next to her. Brad, was hot. Like super hot, like hottest guy in school hot. But Kelly definitely didn't like Brad. She'd actually been harbouring the secret that she was a lesbian for the past six months now, and she wasn't planning on revealing it anytime soon. So she looked down at her hands and twiddled her thumbs over one another before quickly looking up at Alex and answering. "Yeah, um Brad." She agreed, which was met with a howl of 'oh my god, see I told you' from Jessica, absolute silence from Alex and a suspicious look from Lucy. She'd seen the glance up and the way Kelly had been walking around all week, there was someone else, and it certainly wasn't Brad the football star.
When Alex's turn finally rolled around she bit her lip and picked dare to try and avoid being asked the same thing, after all she didn't really know these people, and she didn't know where that information would end up did she say it out loud. Plus she'd have no idea who to pick, and Brad would be her number one choice for a lie. It was Lucy's turn to pick the dare and she sat for several moments with her hands pressed together in a prayer position with her eyes closed. Alex sat with her legs crossed and a terrified look on her face for Lucy's thought-out performance. Until she opened her eyes with glee and a huge but evil smile on her face. "I dare you to kiss Alex."
As soon as those six words had been spoken silence fell in the room, a line had been crossed in the group and half of them were too curious to make a fuss about it. Jessica gave Lucy a look and said, "um, Alex you don't have to do that." Then to Lucy, "what are you doing? Kelly isn't gay." But with the silence in the room her words came out as a shout rather than a whisper.
Kelly couldn't take it anymore, so she stood up put her hands in the back pockets of her jeans and said "actually, I am." It was simple yet affective. And it shut the rest of the girls up. Lucy looked a little smug and Alex looked a little more terrified. But Kelly wasn't giving up on showing her friends that she wasn't something to be gawped at so she walked across the room, grabbed Alex's hand and pulled her across the room and out the door to the linen closet across the landing. She gave the floor a quick sweep with her eyes before shutting the two of them in the dark and panting a little to regain her breath. "That'll teach them, if they come looking for us they won't find us and will assume we left or we're blocking up the bathroom or something." Kelly said trying not to acknowledge how close they now were to each other. This proximity to a crush would usually make her fall over her words and get all quiet and soft with her voice. She'd whisper.
But then the unearned confidence wore off and she turned into all of those things all in one. She retreated to the back of the closet and closed her eyes. Alex stood awkwardly in the corner with her hand gripping her arm, piping up out of the darkness, "um, Kelly?" She asked, "would um, would you have done it?"
Kelly opened her eyes, "done what?" She thought she knew where this was going but a quick glance up and some help from the light spilling in under the door she saw the deadly serious look in Alex's eyes. "If I could, and you wanted to. Yeah I would have." She said truthfully, after all they were alone in this closet for what seemed like was going to be the rest of the night at this rate. It was really now or never.
"Oh." Alex said. The sound fell out of her mouth as she had a bit of realisation, Kelly had been looking at her all night. And she'd enjoyed it, she liked looking at Kelly too, and there really was no one else that she liked. "Ok then."
"Ok?" Kelly asked, taking a step towards Alex and touching her arm. "You want me to?" All Alex could do was nod, then close her eyes as she felt the other girl's lips touching her own. Kelly's hand came up and cupped the side of her face as she pulled back ever so slightly for a breath, "you ok?" She whispered in the dark. She couldn't see Alex properly with them standing so close together so she waited, squeezing Alex's hand she kissed her again.
Kissing Kelly was softer than she had imagined, over the past week and especially the past hour she'd been imagining it over and over. Or rather she was imagining watching Kelly kiss her, like she was some sort of animal to be studied and mulled over. Alex suspected now that it was really just to persuade herself that she wasn't really attracted to her. There was no point lying to herself now, she liked Kelly and she really liked kissing Kelly. It was something she'd never felt before, an intense connection. A rather intense tingling running up the inside of her leg.
