The early morning of January 19, 1968
Fonzie and Rema continued to dance contently as all of Rema's favorite songs seemed to play one after another. Suddenly, as Jerry Butler and Betty Everett's duet of "Let It Be Me" ended, Rema looked out the window, startled at the sight of the sun coming up.
"Oh, goodness!" she gasped, "Fonz, we've been here all night, don't you think we'd better get out of here?"
He pulled her back into his arms, wanting to hold the moment, and her, a little longer.
"In a minute, Rema," he said, still slightly unsure of the feelings coming over him, "Let's not rush things, huh?"
"I know," Rema agreed, "People do seem to rush too much, it seems."
After a few more minutes, Al Delvecchio walked into the room, spotting the couple embracing.
"Hiya, Fonz!" Al said, "You're here kind of early, aren't you?"
Fonzie jumped a little, "Whoa, Al, you startled me there! I've been here with Rema and lost track of time, we were just about to leave."
"Oh, that's fine," Al replied, "I know how it is being caught up in moments like that."
"We'd better get going anyway," Rema said, "My band has a gig in a matter of hours."
They walked out the door hand in hand, and he took her home. When they got to the door step, she took his hand in hers.
"I had the best time, Fonz!" she beamed at him, "I really hope we can do this again some time."
"You bet your button nose we can." he said, squeezing her hand as he stared into her eyes.
"I'll see you soon." she leaned in and quickly kissed him on the cheek, and he blushed, grinning from ear to ear. Right then, he knew for sure something was different. He usually only blushed when Richie's mother, Marion, kissed him like that.
Rema felt her heart fluttering at the sight of his blushing as she walked into her house to prepare for the gig, and Fonzie rode back to his apartment on his motorcycle and went inside, feeling just as floaty.
A Little While Later...
Rema scurried into the venue where the Blueberries' next gig was to be. She was already running late, and her bandmates had already been waiting for her.
"For goodness sake, Rema," Blair exclaimed, "Where have you been? We got here an hour ago!"
"Sorry I'm late," Rema huffed, out of breath, "I overslept and then I had trouble getting here."
Tamara, the drummer, interjected, "It looks to me like you didn't sleep at all, Rema. What in the world did you do last night?"
"Nothing!" Rema said, slightly defensive, "I just had to take care of something after the gig at Arnold's last night!"
Gwen giggled before sneering to Tamara, "She has a thing for The Fonz, how could you not notice it last night, Tamara?"
"I do not!" Rema snapped back, trying to hide her heart telling her otherwise, then grinned a little, "Well, he is adorable, I'll admit!"
Blair knocked her in the arm, "Get ahold of yourself Rema, we're on in ten minutes!" Blair then leaned over to Rema and whispered, "But after the show, I want to hear ALL the details."
Rema laughed, "You will, but right now, let's do the show!"
They did a number of songs, but the band started to notice a change in Rema's tone, similar to last night's, when she began singing Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want To Be With You". She sang with more feeling than she had during "Be My Baby" the night before.
After the band finished, they sat back down. "So, Rema," Blair said excitedly, "Fill us in, what happened?"
"Well," Rema blushed hesitantly, "He walked over to me and complimented our performance right after you guys left, and we got to talking. A few minutes later he stood up and started to snap his fingers or something, but I told him he didn't have to impress me, so he went over and turned on the jukebox by hitting it! It was the coolest thing I've ever seen! Next thing I knew, we were dancing in each other's arms by the jukebox and like some sort of weird fate, every one of my favorite love songs played, one after another and before we knew it, the sun was out!"
"Yikes, Rema!" Gwen squealed, "No wonder you look like you didn't sleep, you were with the love of your life all night!"
Rema laughed and shook her head, "Don't rush it, Gwen, we just met two days ago!"
Gwen snickered, "Whatever, Mrs. Fonzarelli!" Rema turned away to blush and hide her grin when Gwen said that, causing her to respond, "See? I knew it!"
Blair butted in, "Did he kiss you at all?"
"Well," Rema dragged out, and the girls' eyes widened excitedly, "He didn't, but I gave him a little one when he took me home."
Gwen raised her eyes, sneering "Oooh!" and Rema shot her a nasty glare, "Cut it out, Gwen, it was just on the cheek!"
"That's it?" Blair was surprised, "How did he react to that?"
Rema grinned from ear to ear, "He blushed, it was the most adorable thing I've ever seen!" she smittenly said.
In unison, all of the girls said "Awww" as if that were the sweetest thing they had ever heard. They all knew Rema liked taking things slow.
Meanwhile, at the Cunningham house...
Howard and Marion were sitting on their sofa in the family room, watching television, when Fonzie burst through the door, seemingly more excited than he had ever been.
"Arthur!" Marion exclaimed, jumping up to greet him, "It is so good to see you! How have you been lately, dear?"
"Oh Mrs. C., Mr. C., " he began, "Have I got some news for you."
What is it, Fonzie?" Howard asked, surprised by Fonzie's unusually cheerful attitude, "And how was the reunion last night?"
"Let me tell ya somethin', it was COOL, Mr. C.!" he emphasized, "I met the most amazing chick last night, she is the cutest thing I've ever seen!"
Marion hugged and kissed him in excitement, "Arthur, that is wonderful!" she beamed.
"Now, wait a minute," Howard interjected, "Fonzie, you've been with so many girls over the years, how can you be sure she's the one at this point?"
"I just know, Mr. C.," Fonzie said, smittenly gushing, "She is so different from any of the other chicks I've known. And her interest in music, whoa!"
Marion looked at her husband, beaming, "Isn't that sweet?" she said quietly.
Fonzie continued, "We're not rushing into anything, but you wanna know what the best part was?"
"What's that, Fonzie?" Howard asked him, listening intently.
"She kissed me." He turned and pointed to the faint gloss imprint which had still not faded yet. He blushed again just thinking about it.
They talked for a little while longer until it was time for Fonzie to pick up his son, Danny, who was now 16 and in high school.
Before he left, Howard gave him some advice, "Look, Fonzie, I know you're feeling something for this girl, but do me a favor, would you? Be careful. We all know how it is when we think we're in love."
"Not to worry, Mr. C.," Fonzie assured him, "I appreciate you both caring so much, but this chick is just fine, I can tell!"
"That's good, Arthur," Marion said, walking up to join her husband at the front door to say goodbye also, "I hope we get to meet her some day!"
"Oh, you will, Mrs. C.," Fonzie beamed, lovestruck, "I'm sure of that!" And with that, he headed off.
Over the next few months, Fonzie and Rema were noticeably spending a lot of time together. He took her to the annual Valentine's dance at Arnold's, Rema introduced him to Blair, Gwen and Tamara officially, and Fonzie even brought her to meet the Cunninghams during a visit.
"Mr. and Mrs. C.," he began, making the introduction, "I want you to meet someone very special. This is Rema Relgar, the chick I was telling you about before, also a friend of Leather's. Rema, meet the Cunninghams."
"It's good to finally meet you both." she said, shaking their hands.
"I hear you and Fonzie have been seeing quite a bit of each other lately." Howard said, pulling the chairs up for the two.
"You could say that," she said, looking over at Fonzie, "He's really amazing, really unlike anyone I've ever known."
Fonzie just grinned smittenly, "Isn't she the coolest?" he asked, almost seeming to want to convince them, then continued to her, "Kiss me again!"
Rema giggled, realizing she had not done so at all since their first date, then leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. Marion just gushed at the sincerity of their affections.
Howard spoke up, "It's really great to see you two are getting along so well, just try not to move too fast. You know what they say, love is blind."
"Oh, don't worry about that," Rema said, taking Fonzie's hand in hers and resting on the table, "We just really enjoy spending time together."
After talking for awhile longer, Rema once again stood up, "We should probably get going, I have another gig later on I have to get ready for."
Just before Fonzie and Rema walked out the door, Rema stopped Fonzie, saying, "I'll meet you in just a minute, honey, I need to clear up something."
"Aaaayy, not a problem," Fonzie said in his usual way, sliding his arm around her waist, "I'll be counting the seconds!" She kissed him on the cheek once more and he walked to the driveway, blushing heavily.
"Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham," Rema began, slightly nervous, "I know you guys are worried that Fonzie might get hurt, so I just wanted to tell you guys myself, you have nothing to worry about. I intend to treat him well, just as he does to me."
Marion tried to reply, "It's not that we thought you would hurt him..."
"Marion," Howard interjected, stopping her, "Look, Rema, we know you wouldn't hurt Fonzie intentionally. It's just that sometimes, those feelings of infatuation make us lose sight of the way things really are. Fonzie's always had a lot of dates in the past, but he's also been hurt before a few times and we didn't want to see that happen again."
Rema reassured them, "Really, you guys have nothing to worry about. I'm sure you guys think because I'm a few years younger I might not stay interested in him, but I know he's the one for sure. I've never felt this way about anyone I've ever been with since I first started dating in high school, I..." she paused for a second, staring into space, "I love him, I think I may even be IN love."
Off in the distance, Fonzie tried not to listen, but he sure heard that. He moved his hand over his heart, "She loves me..." he muttered, grinning and blushing even more.
Meanwhile, Marion responded, "That's wonderful, dear, we are so glad to see you two so happy and in love like this."
After saying goodbye, Rema headed back over to Fonzie. As Howard and Marion went back inside, they could barely hear Fonzie ask her, "Did you mean that?" Rema's answer, "Yes, I did, honey, I love you." was inaudible to them, but watching through the window, they could see the two kiss on the lips for the first time before leaving together.
