this story was inspired by two things.
1. I was listening to Rock 'n' Roll children by Dio. (this story wouldn't stop rolling around my mind it ever blocked me from chapter 7 of the story mentioned below.
2. This is the full version of chapter 4's memory from my story "The world got bigger"
—
Sarah didn't know at first what had caught her attention until she realized that it was the boy, who was a few years older than her. He was walking slowly down the aisle that her and her father was on, not stopping to look at the shelves. He kept his head down and eyes glued to the floor as he moved past their cart.
It was starting to rain on the night they first decided.
"Go on," said Pastor Gabriel without turning his eyes from the rows of canned soup. "He might need a friend."
It was blinding with snow on the night they ran away.
Smiling at her father's back she rushed off to try and catch up to the boy who had turned the corner heading to the next aisle over.
They were found in the dark
but they never returned.
When she reached the end of the aisle she ducked down, peering around the corner she frowned at what she was seeing.
Just like somebody slammed the door, bang
The boy stood his shoulders bunched up near his ears as a woman spewed angry words at him as she dragged her son away.
She was meant to be wild
He was nearly a child
But they could only feel each other
She felt angry swell up into throat. She wanted to kicked the woman as the boy's face turned red with embarrassment. If her mother was still alive and had seen what the woman did she'd read the woman the right act.
They were paper and fire
Angel and liar, devil of one another
The boy picked up a box of captain crunch stared at it for a moment before sitting it back down. He left the aisle and headed toward the dairy section. His hands deep in his pockets.
Then they were thrown to the the ground
With a terrible sound
Just like somebody broke a heart
She looked back towards her father and noticed that he was occupied by a young couple. He glanced over to her, gave he another nod then returned talking to the husband.

Hurrying down the aisle she snatched two boxes of the cereal, turning she raced back to her father throwing the boxes in the basket. Seeing hi raised eyebrow she smile then raced towards the dairy aisle hoping she could catch the boy before he left.
Without a friend
But they got Rock 'n' Roll
The boy was lost in thought as he played with the change in his pocket. Didn't know what to do. He could either get the last bottle of Yoo-hoo or buy a bag of candy that could last him a few days.
It was starting to rain
On the night that they cried forever
Sarah stood behind him she couple hear the money rattle in his pocket and the large frown on his lips. She wanted to do something to not only cheer him up but to also become his new friend
Oh, it was blinding with snow
On the night that they screamed goodbye
The boy could feel eyes staring at his back. He was afraid the woman had made good on her word. He didn't want to be banned from another store just because a customer felt like they had a right to treat the poor like they where scum.
They were lost in the dark
And they never returned
Just like somebody slammed the door
Suddenly Sarah remembered her older cousins playing pranks on each other. She couldn't understand how or why it made them happy. She didn't want to hurt him like Tony's pranks often did on others when his brother needed cheering up.

Alone again
Finally coming to a decision the boy reached to grab the bottle only for his hand to pull up short when it was snatched up by a small hand. His shoulder dropped as he turned to face the thief.

Sarah allowed a large smile cross her face when the boy turned to her with a disgruntled look in his eyes.

He could feel his jaw drop when he noticed the small girl grinning like a cat that got the canary. To his horror she licked bottle making him step back in disbelief.

"I'm sorry did you want that," said Sarah before she stuck her tongue out at the older boy.
It was starting to rain
On the night that they ran
It was blinding with snow
On the night we let them go
He felt his face turn red with angry as the girl began circling around him sang you can touch me over and over catching the attention of a couple who turned to watch. He felt lucky when they turned and walked away leaving him with the girl.

Oh, children
Rock 'n' Roll Children
Sarah stopped when a dark look passed over his eyes. She realized at that moment that maybe she had gone over board with her teasing when he got in her face. "You just like all the others girls. Nothing but a bitch."

Sarah didn't give him the satisfaction of seeing that she felt like crying. She allowed her face twist into a snarl as she glared up at the taller boy.

Pastor Gabriel turned his shopping cart into the aisle and caught site of his daughter and the boy shooting glares. Having a feeling that his daughter was the one that started the fight he sighed.

"What's going on here?"
The boy jumped when he heard a man's voice speaking from behind him. He whirled around about to argue his innocence but the before he could speak the girl spoke up.
"I'm sorry daddy I was trying to cheer him up but I went to far and made him mad at me."
The man sighed. "What did you do?"

The watched in shock as a blush cover the girl's face. She kicked the floor with her shoe. "I grabbed the last bottle from him and the licked it."
The man grimaced. The only sign of him finding humor in the situation was his laughing green eyes. "Sarah please tell me your not listening to you cousin's lessons"
She didn't say anything as she looked away.
The man turned to the boy. "I'm sorry. It looks like I can't take her any where." He leaned close, "I'd tell you she gets better but that's lie."
"Hey!" The girl cried out.
The boy didn't know if he should laugh or try to escape. So he decided just to stay quiet and see what would happen next
Oh oh oh
For Rock 'n' Roll Children
"How about this, as an apology me and Sarah will take you to McDonald's for dinner.
Sarah could almost read the boys thoughts as he shifted uncomfortable at her fathers idea. "Hey dad me and..." she broke off and looked at the boy with a raised eyebrow when she realized she didn't know he name.
"Eddie."
"Yeah! Can me and Eddie just go to the park and hang out?"
Pastor Gabriel nodded and watched her grab the boys hand ignoring his sputtering as she dragged him away. He waved when Sarah reached the grocery store entrance she turned and smiled at him.
