"It's not Pandora," Kaito sighed into the mic. He held up the gem against the moon, yet nothing happened. Like always.

"Well, bring it to us anyways," Snake responded, his voice a tiny bit crackly. They'd have to fix the communication devices soon, this had been happening for quite a few heists now. "We can still sell it on the black market."

Kaito nodded, a grin on his face. "You got it, tousan."

"Don't call me that," Snake muttered, but there wasn't much heart in it. Kaito knew he was fine with being called Kaito's father, he just found it embarrassing at times.

Kaito pocketed the gem and looked down at his gloves. "Aww, there's a bit of blood on it," he complained. "I'll have to get new ones soon." Luckily, his gloves were black, so it wasn't that easy to spot the blood. His entire outfit was pitch black like the night, easy to hide the blood and easy to escape the clutches of the police. Kaito almost scoffed remembering his blood father's outfit. White. It was probably the worst disguise in the world, yet Kuroba Toichi had worn it with pride. Perhaps that was why he was now dead.

Kaito never knew who killed Toichi and Chikage, yet Snake had taken him in after that. He was a family friend of theirs, and, as it turned out, in the jewel thieving business as well. Snake's methods were more violent than the original Kaitou Kid's ever were, yet it was effective. Kaito learned from Snake and began to see the man as more than a mentor, but rather, a father. He filled the gap that Toichi's death had left in Kaito's life, and Kaito was always grateful to him for that.

Now, Kaito was Kaitou Kid, the new and improved version. And he was going to go back to home base and bring Snake the jewel.

"Kaitou Kid, internationally wanted criminal," a voice spoke from behind Kaito, making him whip around. His eyes immediately caught on a boy around his age and having an appearance similar to his, with a smirk on his face. "Jewel thief and murderer."

Kaito huffed. "I haven't killed anyone yet. The inspector is still alive, isn't he? I saw him at the heist today, though he did seem to have a cast on his arm."

"Alright then," the boy said. "Accomplice to murder. How else would people keep turning up dead at your heists?"

Snake, Kaito thought immediately, but he didn't say this out loud. "All were police officers. Civilians have yet to get killed, and I say my friends were justified in killing the officers. They were getting in my way."

"There's blood on your gloves," the boy noticed, and Kaito jolted in surprise because who was this boy to notice blood stains on black gloves? "Is that from stabbing Hakuba?"

Kaito shrugged. Play it cool. "Maybe it is."

"Kaitou Kid, you're under arrest," the boy said, stepping closer.

Quickly, Kaito brought out his hanglider. "Nope." He stepped back towards the edge of the roof. "Well, see you, detective." Quickly turning around, he jumped off.

Who was that boy?

A quick internet search gave Kaito results. Kudo Shinichi, the Reiwa Holmes, savior of the Japanese police force. Only a teenager, yet still one of the greatest detectives of the century. Kaito smirked. Oh, he was good .

The more research he did, the more he got interested in Shinichi. Joy tingled through his fingertips as he found out the teen detective planned on coming to his next heist. Saguru had come to a lot of his heists before, and he was also a teen detective, but Kaito found him quite boring, so at the last heist, he stabbed him. It wasn't too bad, but it should still leave Saguru absent for the next couple of heists. Shinichi would be against Kaito alone.

"Still researching that kid?"

Kaito turned to look at Snake. "Yeah. He'll be at my next heist, I have to learn everything about him."

Snake sighed. "Well, get some sleep soon."

Kaito nodded. "I will." He waited until Snake left to turn back to the computer. He didn't feel like sleeping tonight, not when he could learn everything about Kudo Shinichi.

The next heist was amazing. After locking Nakamori and the taskforce in the original starting room, Kaito led Shinichi to the rooftop, where they exchanged words. Shinichi's were harsh and biting, but Kaito found he didn't care. He was fascinated with Shinichi, and now he was realizing that no, this wasn't normal. He hadn't ever felt this way before. Why? So Kaito let one of his crows keep an eye on Shinichi while he flew off back to home base.

Watching the camera attached to his crow, Kaito watched Shinichi's movements the next day. He seemed to live a rather ordinary life at first, at least until he stumbled on that murder. Watching Shinichi solve the case was exhilarating, but after a while, Kaito felt like keeping his crow there wasn't a good idea. Something felt wrong about watching him. So he called his crow back that night, then drifted into uncomfortable sleep. I've watched Nakamori-keibu and Tantei-san before, so what's so wrong about watching Kudo Shinichi? He couldn't figure it out.

Only in the morning, after researching about the things Shinichi made him feel, did he realize that oh, he was falling for him. Gaining feelings.

Gaining morality.

Kaito groaned and hit his head on the desk, planning to stay there all day.

"I heard that Kudo kid is giving you a problem."

It had been a month since Kaito learned about his feelings for Shinichi, and he still hadn't quite accepted them. Hearing Snake speak, he jolted in alarm, not having expected his father to have been standing right behind him. "No," Kaito automatically answered, then winced. "I mean, yes."

"We're going to the heist tonight," Snake said. "We're taking down that Kudo kid."

Kaito's eyes widened. "No, no! You don't have to."

Snake narrowed his eyes. "Why?"

Kaito swallowed, struggling to find the words, before he said, "I like the challenge he gives me. It's… fun. I don't want him dead."

Snake snorted at that. "You're too soft hearted, Kaito. Whether or not you enjoy the challenge, he's still a danger. What if he finds out your identity? Captures you?"

Kaito looked Snake in the eye. "It's a risk I'll have to take."

Snake snorted and walked away, and Kaito leaned back in his seat, trembling. Why am I doing this for him? These stupid feelings…

"You're not the same Kaitou Kid as eight years ago, are you?"

Kaito's eyes widened as Shinichi said this, but he didn't show his surprise any further, instead clapping. "Bravo, Tantei-kun! You did good. What gave it away?"

Shinichi waved his hand at him. "Well, everything. You're violent while your predecessor isn't. You wear all black while he wears all white."

"That doesn't mean I'm not the same person though," Kaito pointed out.

"You literally just confirmed my theory moments ago." Shinichi rolled his eyes, then said, "My prime suspect was Kuroba Toichi and that you were his kidnapped son, but I doubt you'll confirm that theory for me."

Kaito froze. He… figured out his identity? Already? How?

"I'll just have you know…" Shinichi paused, then continued. "At Kuroba Toichi's last show, a man in black with a strange mustache was seen leaving the building hurriedly. If you are in fact Kuroba Kaito, then… Well, this man might have killed your parents."

Snake? No. It can't be.

"Kid, no words to say?" Shinichi questioned.

"I won't let you fool me," Kaito muttered. "I won't…" Yet his mind was whirling. Shinichi had just broken his world, and Kaito wanted to believe him, because… because of these cursed feelings.

"I'm sorry," Shinichi muttered, turning away. "See you next heist?"

But before he left, Kaito quickly dug out the gem from his pocket. "Wait. Take this."

Shinichi gave him a look of confusion. "Huh?"

Kaito swallowed. "Return the gem. Please."

Shinichi paused, then took it. "Alright, Kid." With that, he left.

Kaito quickly brought out his hanglider and left the building, too much on his mind.

Why had he just done that?!

Romantic feelings were horrible.
