Shrine Maiden Kuki Shinobu Yearns For More

MAY Contain Spoilers for Kuki Shinobu's Hangout Quest: The Gang's Daily Deeds (Probably not)

Kuki Shinobu held a slight disdain for her job.

Learning the ins and outs of her shrine maiden duties, providing ample advice and support to visitors with a variety of problems, maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the Grand Narukami Shrine… at this point, it wouldn't be far-fetched to say that she was already a veteran shrine maiden. She was a well renowned person, almost a celebrity from how many people came to visit solely for her help - from children, to adults, to even the elderly. They all truly appreciated Shinobu's everyday aid.

And yet, despite her distinguished status as one of the shrine's most popular shrine maidens… she couldn't say that she liked it.

In fact, she found it all quite bothersome. Boring, in fact. Clad in the typical white kosode, red hakama and okobo sandals, Kuki Shinobu found her job to be utterly mind numbing at times.

She didn't want to partake in a job she considered to be so full of tedium. She was bound by family customs, despite her many protests. However, certain familial circumstances had also prevented her from reaching her true potential; what she truly sought for in life. Her sister had fallen gravely ill, so she had no choice but to take up her mantle - as one of her family's many shrine maidens. Outside of distant relatives and cousins, family tradition deemed that at least one daughter be assigned the task of being a shrine maiden. That responsibility fell upon Kuki Shinobu.

If it meant earning a decent wage to pay for her sister's medical bills and that her life wasn't burdened by the duties of a miko, then it was worth it to stomach a monotonous quotidian life.

…Still, it didn't hurt to dream of a more adventurous career. Of perhaps pursuing a law degree in a far away country, or being a well respected tailor, or a celebrity chef, or anything else other than this damned shrine maiden job.

Fortunately for her, a break in her prosaic everyday found her. Seeping its way into the cracks of her monotonous days was a bright, spirited adventurer that always donned the most illuminated smiles she has ever seen.

The Traveler. A curious person, of whom she heard many rumors about. From an enemy of the Shogunate to Inazuma's savior, she's heard it all. It was unavoidable, frankly - what with how loud her peers were in their avid gossip. She wondered if that was any way for a shrine maiden to act, and then she remembered how she frequently snuck off from the shrine whenever business wasn't booming, so she quickly banished the thought lest she turn into one of those hypocrites she so passionately hated.

She found him to be quite intriguing. A person whose ambition wasn't dictated by gods or leaders, yet he often visited the shrine to receive his fortune. A person who found his tasks equally as mundane as hers, yet carried them out without so much as a complaint or a sigh. Often he'd receive a request or a commission pertaining to the shrine, and often she would find him jumping off the Grand Narukami Shrine without a moment's notice.

…She didn't know if he was brave, or just plain insane.

But she admired his spirit. Unwavering in his ideals, adventurous and adept at all sorts of tasks - facets of which she only dreamed of having. So it wasn't a surprise to her when she felt… envy, seeing him pass by frequently and leave as quickly as he arrived, letting the wind guide him rather than let some sort of circumstance dictate his life.

So it certainly wasn't expected, when one day when she was merely observing him be his usual exuberant self, that he would suddenly come and approach her with the most maniacal offer she's ever heard.

"...Would you like to come along with me?"

And yet, Kuki Shinobu found no reason to reject the offer, despite the surrealism of it all.

And from that day onward, her life had taken a drastic change.

Adventure.

Fights.

Camping.

Gliding.

She was experiencing it all.

And she was having the time of her life.

She's made all sorts of excuses to her peers and even her boss, just so she could partake in the insanity that was Aether's life. She could see Guuji Yae's eyes squint the tiniest bit harder with every excuse she made, but she let her go everytime without so much as a snide remark.

…Shinobu truly hoped she was none the wiser, otherwise she'd be in deep trouble, especially if the Guuji spoke to her family of her newfound frequent adventures.

She shuddered at the notion. That woman truly was terrifying at times.

But she discarded that thought. Tonight, she had a special early leave and so she wasted no time in contacting Aether during his afternoon visit to the shrine if he was available. He was, of course, as is typical. She almost grinned widely in immense joy at the notion of another day out adventuring, but managed to reel it in, albeit with a small blush on her face.

She climbed down the spiraling steps of the Grand Narukami Shrine, before ultimately deciding on a jump mid-way through.

Before letting her wings glide free - a gift from Aether.

Now, she understood why Aether jumped off from the top as regularly as he did. It was exhilarating.

She landed just at the entrance of the giant staircase, finding a mop of blonde hair sitting just by the torii gate.

"Hey there, Shinobu. Nice jump!" He grinned, and she found herself grinning too.

"Thanks. I still need to get used to the whole gliding thing, but I'm doing just fine. You're an excellent teacher, you should know."

He chuckled, "Aw, you're gonna make me blush. Such words of praise from the esteemed Shinobu, don't tell me… has my repertoire finally gained me your respect?!"

She sighed, as she tied her long flowing viridescent hair into a messy ponytail, "Ha ha. Come on, I want to try out that new technique you taught me."

He exaggeratedly saluted, earning a small giggle from her. "Aye aye, madam!"

She liked how casual he was with her, not treating her like a dainty child like her parents did nor some sort of untouchable celebrity like the shrine visitors did. He just treated her like her, like Shinobu.

Like equals.

They arrived at a level field of grass, with not much obstruction in the way. The perfect area for a quick spar, something they've engaged in on a frequent basis by now. "This should be good."

"Great eye. You're definitely improving on choosing our sparring areas. Last time, you chose a location way too close to some guy's home and we ended up having to explain to the Tenryou Commission—"

"Y-You don't have to mention that, okay?" Shinobu said, a little louder than she wanted to.

He laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Right, right, sorry."

They positioned themselves a few meters within of each other, staring determinedly at their opposite. "Alright." Aether threw a wooden sword at Shinobu, which she swiftly catched with ease. Aether materialized his own as they took their stances, "...Ready?"

"On you, sensei." She smirked, and with her challenging words the battle started. Aether took the initiative, and dashed at an incredible speed towards her. "Remember, don't hold back!"

Their swords clashed, as the wood from them chipped at the intense friction. Aether smiled, "Then you shouldn't as well."

They broke off as Shinobu attempted an overhead slash, one that Aether easily dodged. "Of course!"

Their duel had continued without any interruption, though the Traveler noticed Shinobu's stamina rapidly depleting. Aether had to admit, however, of how skilled Shinobu was for a novice. It was only a few weeks ago since they've started their joint misadventures, and it was certainly a surprise for the blonde to find how quickly the shrine maiden picked up on a lot of things. She was already well versed at wind gliding, her memorization and concentration was next to none when it came to puzzles, and she was a surprisingly excellent cook whenever they camped out. Even while they were sparring, he noticed how quickly she utilized his lessons and was even starting to develop her very own fighting style.

Suffice to say, Kuki Shinobu had a knack for a lot of things. A jack of all trades, and perhaps even a master of many. Aether wondered of a Shinobu untethered by circumstance, flowing freely in the wind like he was. Perhaps she would flourish into one of the most skilled persons he would ever know, but alas, that was only but a mere daydream for now.

With how much ambition and perseverance she displays, it would be no surprise to Aether if she ever was granted a Vision.

Maybe some day.

"I'm pretty sure I've won, Shinobu." She was panting, sweat beading at the top of her forehead, 'a sight quite unbecoming for a shrine maiden', her peers might say, if they saw her like this. But Aether didn't mind. It was proof of her progress - her frighteningly speedy progress, that is.

"Y-Yeah, I guess so. One day I'll beat you, I promise." She sighed, before approaching him with a lackluster vigor to her step. "Do you have some water? I think I need to—Ah!"

A misstep, sending her tumbling straight into Aether's hands.

But not if she could help it!

She swiftly corrected her posture, comically jumping to fix herself. "S-Sorry… It's these damned okobo sandals, I swear…" She went to dusting herself off of any dirt, ignoring the stare the Traveler was giving her. In truth, she was completely clean, but she had to do something - anything, if only to ignore the embarrassing situation they were almost in.

Aether, however, lacking his usual exuberant air, donned a concerned expression as he gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "You okay? That could've been a bad fall…"

He drew awfully close, prompting the green-haired girl to jerk back almost violently. "I-I'm fine!" She almost laughed, but stopped herself short, knowing how awkward it would've sounded. "I'm… absolutely fine."

Shinobu thought of herself as an expert in avoiding awkward situations, yet here she found herself in close proximity to the Traveler, blushing intensely as she watched Aether's expression intently.

Truth be told, these past few weeks with him has opened up many facets of herself that used to be unknown to her. From newfound skills to newly discovered hobbies, she's also found some… weird feelings, pertaining to the Traveler.

Despite only knowing him for a short time, she admired the Traveler. She kept finding things about him that she liked - from his kindness, to his consideration for others, to even simple things such as how he treated her, it all hammered themselves firmly into her mind, unwilling to give her any reprieve. His many facets, including his headstrong attitude and unwavering spirit, were things she very much aspired for.

One could only wonder if this admiration would grow into something… stronger. However, she kept these growing feelings in check, no matter how much it bugged her. She's even found herself staring at him fondly, whenever she thought he wasn't looking. Her fellow shrine maidens would have a field day whenever they caught sight of her gazing so intently. Prime gossip material. She quickly silenced those rumors, however, before her family caught word of such 'uncharacteristic, deplorable, unbefitting conduct for a shrine maiden,' as she imagined her mother would so fervidly and emphatically declare.

It was just a passing fancy! Nothing to fret about. And so, she was just about to separate from him, when she suddenly heard a familiar voice call out from behind her.

"Shinobu?!"

Of all the places… she turned around, and there in all her fuming glory was her mother. Besides her was her sister, Miyuki, sat in a wheelchair. Instead of righteous fury, Shinobu was instead met with a perplexed look from her.

"Your sister and I were just taking a stroll… what exactly are you doing here, in the middle of the night? Aren't you supposed to be at the shrine still? What's more…" She aggressively pointed at Aether, her face askance. "...What are you doing so close to that man?!"

Shinobu immediately gave Aether distance, "Mother… nee-san..! It's not what you think..!"

"Oh? Are my eyes deceiving me, then? You looked quite acquainted with him right there, melting into this frivolous man's arms like some sort of lovestruck girl!"

Shinobu's surprised tone turned harsh, as she leveled a glare against her mother, "That is nowhere close to what happened—"

She heard a cough. Miyuki covered her hands, before giving both sister and parent a gentle smile. "Mother… that isn't just any person she's with… it's the Traveler!"

"Ah, so you're out here fraternizing with an outsider, then? Instead of doing your shrine maiden duties? I didn't raise you to be this rebellious, child."

Shinobu facepalmed, giving Miyuki an unimpressed look. Miyuki, in response, giggled, mouthing a 'Sorry', as she gave a small smile. Her next set of words though betrayed the apology that she just gave, "I didn't know that you had… that kind of relationship with the Traveler, Shinobu. How exciting! Please, do tell!"

Shinobu swore that she saw a vein on her mother's head burst from how miffed she looked.

The green-haired girl groaned, glaring at her sister. "Not helping, nee-san! We are not in whatever kind of relationship you're thinking of!" Miyuki could only giggle, before she was sent into a coughing fit. Shinobu approached her, eyes laced with concern, but Miyuki waved off her worries as quickly as they came.

Her mother, however, did not find any of this comical. "Meeting with a man in the middle of the night… falling into his arms like you're in some sort of secret rendezvous… abandoning your shrine duties… all unbecoming of you! Did we not raise you right?! And what is with that hair of yours?! I told you to always let it flow freely. That crass high ponytail of yours is not befitting of a shrine maiden's image!"

"E-Erk… I-I… Well…" Shinobu stammered, clearly not expecting her mother's seemingly neverending barrage of criticism. It seems like despite Shinobu's best efforts to quell any rumors surrounding her and the Traveler, they were all for naught; Her carelessness has let her mother observe exactly what Shinobu didn't want her to see, allowing her to send wave after wave of opprobrium. While typically headstrong and adamant when it came to arguments, it seems like in the face of her mother she was less willing to be argumentative. Shinobu hung her head low, merely taking the full brunt force of her mother's harsh words without uttering a single word.

Aether, a bystander so far, was only observing the situation from the side, believing any input he would give may not be taken seriously by Shinobu's harsh mother. However…

Seeing the usually strong-willed Shinobu act so meekly… Aether couldn't bear to listen to her overbearing mother any longer.

Especially with her next set of words.

"This is for your sister's sake, Shinobu. How could you be so irresponsible?! Do you not care for her? Do you not care for your family's legacy—"

"I assure you, Kuki-san, she cares a lot." Aether stepped forward, obscuring Shinobu from her mother.

"You! What would you know of my Shinobu? You're just some man she met! How would you know of our struggles?!"

"I may not have known her for very long, unlike you…" He said, slowly, before turning his head towards Shinobu, who looked quite surprised at his sudden intervention. He smiled, before facing her mother once more. "...but I've known Shinobu to be one of the most responsible people I've ever met. She's continuing on with being a shrine maiden, just for you, Kuki-san, and Miyuki-san too, of course. She has many aspirations, of traveling the world and adventuring, but she's content for now with being a shrine maiden, for you two's sake. I only take her on short trips, never leaving the isle of Narukami. This is her way of spending time outside of her occupation, it is completely separate from work. I assure you, Shinobu is one of the most hardworking and diligent shrine maidens I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. She gives the best advice, is loved by both her peers and visitors, and is known as a veteran at the Grand Narukami Shrine for her efforts. She cares very much, so please…" Aether's earnest expression hardened, "...don't be too harsh on her. She's only doing her best."

Shinobu gaped at him. Here Aether was, pleading to her mother fervently. She couldn't help the expression of shock on her face. She felt her heartbeat hasten, as a warmth she's never felt before rose from within her chest and onto her face. Unbeknownst to her, her sister Miyuki held a teasing smile on her lips, clearly enjoying the situation they were in.

Aether continued, this time with a hand on his nape, "However, I acknowledge that our ventures outside of shrine work may come as a surprise to you, and for that…"

Aether bowed, a full 90 degrees. Shinobu gasped, "A-Aether, what are you—"

"I am sorry. I have been taking your daughter out frequently without your knowledge. I realize this comes off as incredibly irresponsible, and for that I ask for your forgiveness."

A dead silence took over the atmosphere momentarily, casting a tense air on their shoulders. Shinobu's mother stared intently at the Traveler, currently still bowing. Miyuki held a neutral expression, whilst Shinobu was full blown speechless. Suddenly realizing the situation Aether was putting himself in, she snapped out of her thoughts and tugged on his arm, "Y-You don't have to apologize, Aether! I did this of my own volition, I—"

"...My daughter, what is she to you?" Shinobu slightly jumped, surprised at her mother's sudden line of questioning.

"A good friend." He answered honestly. Suddenly, Shinobu found this conversation all the more embarrassing.

"Hmm…" Kuki's mother hummed, before continuing with her questioning, "...do you care for her, as much as you proclaim she cares for my family's legacy? For Miyuki?"

"Yes. With all my heart. Your daughter loves Miyuki dearly, and for that she will go through anything for her. Even… for a job she may not wholeheartedly like." Aether answered without any hesitation whatsoever, surprising Kuki-san somewhat.

The red-faced Shinobu, however, was clearly not enjoying their conversation, "I-I'm right here, you know!"

Kuki-san smiled a small smile, chuckling to herself, "I'm well aware of my daughter's dislike of our line of work."

"Then you must know that for that reason, despite that fact, she puts in her all when it comes to her shrine maiden duties. If you come and visit her—"

"Which I would rather not happen!" Shinobu cut in.

"—you'll see for yourself the fruits of her labor. The smiles on the visitors' faces, the words of praise her fellow shrine maidens offer, the intricate craftsmanship she shows in creating omamori… all of which are examples of just how much work your daughter puts in. Hell, even Guuji Yae herself has acknowledged her diligence."

"Y-You didn't have to tell her that!" Once again, Kuki Shinobu finds herself with an awfully crimson face.

"And that is why…" Aether continued, his voice almost faltering. Shinobu could tell he was starting to feel tired, yet despite that fact he stubbornly persevered, "Please… let her continue adventuring. That's all we ask for. It's the least she could ask for."

"I… I…" Shinobu started, but couldn't find any words to respond with. Aether's pleas were a tad too embarrassing for her to endure, but she couldn't exactly… disagree. It was essentially what she wanted to say to her mother.

Shinobu, instead only gave a light smile. Even if her mother disagreed or still regarded her as uncaring for her work, at this point she didn't really care anymore. Even if she didn't accept Aether's apology, she'd still go out frequently with Aether, even if she were to be branded a rebel by her mother.

"It's the least she could ask for." The words echoed in her mind.

Shinobu's smile grew the slightest bit larger. Miyuki chuckled at the sight, finding her sister's reactions amusing.

While Shinobu was contemplating Aether's words, another brief silence took hold of the group. Aether grunted quietly, now starting to feel the numbing effects of maintaining a formal bow. It was awkward and tense, waiting for Shinobu's mother's response. Fortunately for him though, it wouldn't take long.

"...What an earnest young man." Shinobu whipped her head towards her mother at lightning speed, incredulous at what she just heard. "How mature. I suppose that... your apology is sufficient."

Shinobu blinked, "W-Wha…"

"Thank you, Kuki-san." Aether maintained his perfect 90 degree bow, though Shinobu could see a few droplets of sweat on him fall onto the grassy ground. Clearly, he was struggling.

"Alright, that's enough, Aether!" Shinobu pulled him up, startling him somewhat. He stumbled a bit, before Shinobu fixed his posture.

"What you said a while ago…" Kuki-san interjected, garnering the attention of both Aether and Shinobu. "...Can I trust you to keep my daughter safe?"

Aether nodded, "I won't let any harm come across your daughter, Kuki-san. Rest assured, nothing dangerous happens during our outings."

"H-Hey! I'm my own adult, you know. So I can handle myself perfectly!" Shinobu interjected, slightly miffed at her mother's seemingly patronizing request.

"This is my condition, Shinobu. I'll allow you to… do whatever it is you two do, as long as I hear from… what was it, Miyuki? The Traveler?"

"Yes, mother. He's basically the hero of Inazuma, haven't you heard?"

With reddening cheeks and a smug smile, Aether scratched the back of his head, "Well… you don't have to go that far by calling me that…"

Shinobu gave him an unimpressed look. Aether could only laugh at it.

"I… see. Well then. That should be fine, yes, Shinobu?" Her mother asked, an intent look in her eyes.

Shinobu looked like she wanted to protest, but ultimately relented with a sigh, "...Fine. But I don't want you bugging us, okay? It'd be weird if you were following us… or something." As long as her mother didn't pester her constantly about going out, then this condition sufficed.

"Of course not. What kind of mother do you take me for?"

"Actually, mother knows someone in the shrine that she—"

"Shush your mouth, Miyuki. You shouldn't speak too much. Only the Electro Archon knows how much germs there may be in the air."

With a knowing smile, Miyuki nodded. "Yes, mother."

Shinobu found their conversation suspicious, as she gazed at them with squinted eyes. Her sister's smile only grew tenfold. Suddenly, Miyuki posed a question, "Now, on to more pressing matters! Shinobu, what the Traveler said a while ago… don't you think it sounded… awfully romantic?"

"Eh?" Shinobu blinked.

"W-What?" Aether titled his head, confusion evident on his features.

"Come on… don't act dumb! 'I care for her dearly,'" Miyuki grinned as she imitated Aether's deeper tone of voice, "Don't you think that sounds a lot like a boyfriend trying to convince his girlfriend's stern mother? Right?"

Shinobu's cheeks immediately flared up in color, "Nowhere close!"

"'I won't let any harm come across your daughter, Kuki-san.' How romantic!" Miyuki squealed, giggling in her seat as her imagination went wild.

Aether blushed, suddenly realizing how his words sounded, especially out of context. Shinobu, however, wasn't having any of it. "N-Nee-san! I'll get angry with you, you know!"

Miyuki giggled, before being sent into a coughing fit. Shinobu approached her almost instantly, worry etched on her face. She gently patted Miyuki's behind, "Don't push yourself too hard."

Miyuki shook her head, "I'm not, don't worry."

"Shinobu." Their mother spoke up, prompting the two to face her. "I have to apologize. I seem to have spoken too quickly, and… too far. I misjudged, and for that I am sorry."

Shinobu faced her mother with a serious expression, as she continued, "I'll try not to jump to conclusions too hastily in the future. It seems I haven't given you enough credit for your efforts. I must say however, I would like to see you in action some time."

Shinobu waved her hands around frantically, a bead of sweat rolling down her face. "T-That's quite alright, haha..!" Her mother donned a genuine countenance however, and seeing that Shinobu knew she wouldn't be able to escape her own mother, especially when she sets her mind on things. She sighed, resigned to her fate. "...I work from the morning until the early evening. You can catch me anytime during that."

Kuki-san smiled. This time, a bright smile. "Thank you, Shinobu."

Shinobu played with one of her bangs as she averted her gaze, "U-Uh, yeah." She was silent for a while, before suddenly speaking up. "Uh… mother?"

"Yes?"

Shinobu's face turned the slightest bit towards her mother as she spoke, "T-Thank you, too… for the apology."

Kuki-san smiled, once more. She was smiling a lot more now. "It's the least I can do."

A silence blanketed them once more, but this time not one of tenseness nor aggravation, but now… of serenity. Miyuki and Aether stared at the two, glad to see them getting along, even if it was only for this short while. Aether heard of how Shinobu was on bad terms with her parents, so seeing the scene before him was a pleasant surprise. Miyuki understood Aether's gaze all too well, feeling the same way as she looked at the usual bickering duo be embraced in a comforting atmosphere.

Kuki-san coughed, "Now, about your relationship with the Traveler. When did you two start dating—"

And there the pleasant atmosphere goes.

"I keep telling you, we have no such relationship!" Shinobu ruffled her hair in frustration, making her look even more disheveled than before. "Ugh… come on, Aether, let's go!"

"As your mother, I have the right to know—Hey! Where do you think you're going, young lady?!"

"Somewhere else!" Shinobu blew a raspberry as she looked back. She was walking away, one hand on Aether's wrist as she pulled him along.

"Tell me all about you two later, okay, Shinobu?"

"Not funny, nee-san! Ugh… I'll—I'll see you two later!" And with that, Shinobu quickly took off, Aether in tow.

"Get back here, young lady!"

"Bye bye, Shinobu! You too, Traveler!"

"A-Ah, yeah, see you…" Aether responded with an uncharacteristically meek voice, unsure if they even heard him. That certainly wasn't what he was expecting from meeting Shinobu's sister...

Shinobu ran, prompting Aether to match her speed as well. Once they were quite a distance away, Shinobu sighed, giving Aether a sympathetic glance. "I'm sorry about my family… they can be weirdly passionate about things sometimes. Oh, and don't worry, they know their way back. Our house is pretty close by."

Aether shook his head, "I don't mind. It's good that you get along with your family. It's been a while since I've personally experienced that, so it's nice to see… as strange as that may sound."

"Get along, huh…" Shinobu drawled out, thinking out loud. Shinobu knew what was on his mind. He's had that longing look on him before. He was thinking of his sister. Just like her, Aether was doing his very best for his sister; for him - rather than taking on an unwarranted job - traversing the world to find her whereabouts. She tugged on Aether's scarf, "E-Erm… if it's okay to ask… how goes your search for your sister..?"

Aether smiled, "Thanks for asking. Well, I'm steadily finding out her reasons for leading such a dangerous group… so I'm getting there, at the very least. Still a bit far away, though."

"I see… it's good that you're making progress, then. You'll get there, sooner or later. I believe." Shinobu nodded. His tenacity was truly admirable. In spite of seemingly impossible odds to find his sister, he pushed through and kept going. It was one of those many facets of his that she wholeheartedly respected.

Aether, however, keen on changing the topic, had other ideas. His eyes gleamed a sense of mischief as he put on a playful, yet deeply annoying smile, "Hey, you know… what Miyuki said, I don't really mind if we actually really became—"

Just when they were having a nice conversation… Shinobu's expression darkened, as one of her fists balled up. "You finish that sentence and I'll punt you so hard you'll be sent flying straight to the Grand Narukami Shrine."

Aether laughed loudly, before imitating a zipping motion on his mouth. "My lips are sealed."

They continued walking, the only noise surrounding them being the wind and its susurration of the tree leaves. It was quiet, peaceful. Something Shinobu didn't typically search for, as she preferred a sense of adventure. But, every once in a while, perhaps… she didn't really mind a serene stroll down Inazuma's dirt paths with Aether.

Her mind wandered. To the first day they spoke to each other. Shinobu never truly thought of Aether's offer deeply, only accepting it on a whim, not expecting how life changing it would be. But now, she was curious. "Hey, Aether?"

Aether turned to her, humming as he held an imaginary zipper on his mouth, "Mmm?"

Shinobu rolled her eyes. Always a comedian. "You can speak now."

Aether's fingers ran across his lips, as if he zipped something open. With a giant grin, he spoke, "Yeah?"

Shinobu couldn't help the smile on her lips just from how goofy he was acting. She continued, "I just wanted to ask, why did you give me that offer… all those weeks ago?"

Aether looked confused, "What offer?"

"You know, the very first thing you said to me. You asked me if I wanted to come along with you."

Aether's eyes lit up in recognition, "Ah, that. Well, uh…"

Shinobu gazed at him expectantly, her eyes shimmering with genuine intent to listen. She was absolutely determined to know, Aether noticed. He supposed anyone would, after receiving such a spontaneous offer.

"I guess… because you just looked bored?"

"Eh?"

Aether shrugged, "You just had this… hazy look on you, as if you weren't really enjoying what you were doing. I needed help that day with a commission, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask, I guess? Maybe you'd have fun? I don't really know. My sister, back when we were traveling together, often told me I'm a bit too spontaneous for my own good, so… sorry about that!" He ended with a grin.

Shinobu's eyebrows rose the highest they've ever been at his ludicrous statement. She figured that his invitation was going to have a deeper meaning, so this revelation was certainly a surprise, but…

Well, that kind of approach to life definitely does sound like Aether. Shinobu snickered, "That is… so stupid, yet so like you!"

"Hey!" Aether yelled, feeling mildly vexed. "I-It just happened, okay? Were you expecting something else?"

She waved him off, wiping a stray tear off one of her eyes, "No, not really. It's just… hehe, it definitely does sound like something you'd do."

Aether's eyes squinted, "Something tells me that's not a very positive comment."

Shinobu tapped her cheek in amusement, enjoying the rare opportunity to tease her friend. "Hmm… I wonder..?"

Aether ruffled his hair, finding Shinobu's glee at his expense comical. It wasn't often Shinobu was such a massive tease, after all. Before long and he started laughing, prompting the girl he was with to join in with her own sets of giggles.

They settled in a comfortable silence after their laughter had died down, content on enjoying the sights of Inazuma's magnificent night sky. Slow nights like these weren't typical for the two, but they didn't really mind. It was a different kind of fun.

It's calm and quiet… definitely beats the noisy folk I have to deal with back at the shrine, Shinobu thought.

"So…" Aether spoke, immediately catching Shinobu's attention, who was previously enamored by the night sky's stars, "...your sister, huh? She's pretty nice, if a bit playful, just like you said. How has she been?"

Shinobu smiled, "Well… she's steadily improving. The medicine helps, so do the frequent strolls our mother takes her on. Takes the stress off her shoulders, you know?"

"Yeah, I get it. Fresh air can help drastically. Nothing beats the good old outdoors!"

"Yeah… she's doing well so far. I'm proud of her." Shinobu said, matching her step to be in rhythm with Aether's.

"That's great news. When she recovers, we should throw a big party for her or something! I already have a few ideas! Yoimiya should be able to get us some fireworks for the occasion… hmm, maybe with this and that..." His voice lowered and lowered until the only thing Shinobu could hear was incoherent mumbling. She giggled, finding his enthusiasm for her sister's sake endearing.

"Gah!" Shinobu yelled, immediately setting off alarm bells in Aether's mind. Turning to her, he found Shinobu's hair entangled in a stray tree branch. They struggled as they swiftly removed the branch from Shinobu's hair. Patting her hair down, Shinobu groaned, "Urgh… that hurt."

"You okay?" Aether examined her ponytail, checking if any damage was made to her hair or if there were any small twigs still caught up in her many locks.

This made Shinobu feel self-conscious, stepping away slightly as she held her ponytail with reddening cheeks, "I-I'm fine. Ugh, that's so annoying though… maybe my mother was right… this ponytail thing just gives me problems…" Her annoyance grew to a slight sense of insecurity, feeling nervous as Aether gazed at her earnestly. She mumbled, "...doesn't even look that good on me."

Aether, however, heard her loud and clear. "I disagree. I think it suits you perfectly."

Shinobu's face burst into a sea of fiery scarlet. H-He heard that?! "U-Uh… thanks…"

Aether didn't miss the splash of red crossing her face, seeing a great opportunity to tease her. "Hmm? Is that..? Are my eyes deceiving me? Are you, perhaps…" He smirked, "...embarrassed? Is the great shrine maiden Kuki Shinobu flustered at a simple compliment?"

She turned even redder, a mix of both anger and embarrassment, "S-Shut up! You shut your trap if you know what's good for you!"

Aether laughed, flustering the poor girl even more. She pinched one of his ears, "This is what you get! You don't get off easily from joking about a shrine maiden!"

"Ow, ow, ow, alright, s-sorry..!" He said, yet despite the pain he still found himself smiling. Shinobu soon let go, but not before leveling a harsh glare on him. He chuckled, rubbing his stinging red ear, "I was being genuine, just so you know… It looks good on you."

She scoffed, "W-Whatever!" She stomped off on her own, leaving Aether to follow a few steps behind. Aether didn't mind, in fact, he found her reaction quite amusing, subtly grinning from the side. Shinobu, on the other hand, felt guilty about her harsh-sounding reaction. Truth be told, she was actually elated to hear Aether's honest words, so she most definitely didn't want to treat Aether rudely. She just had a hard time expressing her gratitude towards something so earnest, that's all. And so, after a few more steps passed by, she mustered up all her courage, turned towards Aether and meekly spoke, "...but thank you." She felt heat rush to her face, feeling sheepish at her next set of words. But she persevered through the embarrassment, albeit with her voice lowering even more, to the point where it mostly sounded like a whisper. "I… guess I can keep it on for a bit longer… maybe…"

Despite his typically keen ears, Aether couldn't quite catch her last sentence. "Hmm? What was that?"

She abruptly coughed before she slapped her own cheeks, trying to alleviate her flusteredness. The action made Aether send a flummoxed look her way, but he disregarded it as Shinobu spoke, "...Nothing. Where, uh… where should we go next? We haven't really done much of anything today, and we have been wandering around for quite a while now…"

"Hah, yeah, not much adventure today. But slow nights like these are fun too every now and then, right?"

"Yeah, true. Tonight's been weirdly fun, despite that little encounter with my mother." She sighed, feeling faintly exhausted by that whole debacle.

Aether chuckled, "As for where we should go… well, I'm feeling a bit hungry, and we are near Ritou, so perhaps a stop by over there before we end the night?"

"Sure. I haven't had anything since the afternoon, so that sounds good."

A few minutes later and they arrived at Ritou. They passed by a few guards who greeted them, as they displayed full-fledged respect for both a veteran shrine maiden and the illustrious Traveler. The two, however, didn't seem to pay mind towards the stares they were receiving, as they were only concerned with satiating their hunger. Aether suggested a nearby ramen stall, to which Shinobu eagerly agreed to.

While ramen might not be a food that one would expect an elegant shrine maiden to eat, Shinobu really couldn't care less as she was starving. They ordered two large bowls of ramen, with Shinobu having an additional small bowl of rice, as was typical of her. Still wearing her white kosode and red hakama, she laughed, conversed and expressed herself the complete opposite of how she usually acted at the shrine - instead, she was being her true, genuine self.

Rarely did she have the opportunity to express her real self, only in Aether's companionship she did. Besides Miyuki and even sometimes her parents, the only person she truly confided in was Aether. Mainly because the Traveler, as much as it was embarrassing to say out loud, was her only friend.

Their conversation soon died down, as they watched and listened to the chef in front of them prepare their meals with utmost proficiency. With each move of his perfectly memorized and calculated, it made for an entertaining watch while they waited for their meals. Aether was completely mesmerized, looking as though he was taking down notes for the next time he cooked. Shinobu, on the other hand…

Was gazing at the blonde right next to her.

Not exactly entranced like Aether was, just… deep in thought. Her mind drew back to the small adventures they've been on together, despite their relatively short time knowing one another. Perhaps, without Aether… she would never have known the taste she has now for travel. She's always dreamed of it, but circumstances always prevented her from pursuing them. Who knew all it took to give her a light push was one pesky little Traveler?

However… she wondered if such a relationship would truly last. She yearned to travel the world; perhaps even accompany the Traveler in his many adventures, but… she found the notion impossible. Before Aether came along, she wouldn't normally think of such quixotic ideals. But his advent and the many adventures - not to mention troubles - that he brought along with him had turned her world upside down. Suddenly, she found herself yearning for more, perhaps of a life not shackled by circumstance. Suddenly, she feared the worst - to be stuck forever bound, chained - the Grand Narukami Shrine, an aspect of her entire life.

She wondered if this was her destiny; kismet's cruel way to show her that dreams were only that - dreams.

Of course, all of this was for her sister's sake… so she never once doubted taking upon Miyuki's duties as a shrine maiden, but…

Such aspirations of hers never truly went away. She only wanted to get closer to those dreams, even if only slightly.

She found herself chuckling at the sight of an Aether childishly enamored by the chef in front of him. Well… perhaps in some ways… I did get closer to them, even if it was only a little…

"Aether."

Breaking out of his hungry trance, he turned to her, his expression clear and genuine in his intent to listen. "A-Ah, yeah?" He hoped he didn't look like a fool just now, like an image reminiscent of a certain hungry flying pixie.

She turned in her seat, her back facing the stall. She faced the noisy folk of Ritou, yet her gaze was nowhere to be found within its rowdy streets. It was hazy, as if she was looking at something far, far, away. She began, "Do you believe… that perhaps, this shrine maiden thing was just destined for me from the very start? That there was nothing else for me to do? Maybe… these feelings of mine, of wanting to travel the world and make my own name… perhaps they were just the fleeting fancies of a naive girl." She smiled, yet no glee was to be found in her expression. "What do you think..? Do you believe in that sort of fate?"

She turned to face Aether, her eyes losing that cloudy mist as realization dawned on her. Frantically, she apologized, "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to spring that up on you so suddenly. Please, just forget everything I said—"

"I… believe in fate, yes." Aether shuffled in his seat, scooting slightly closer to the shrine maiden. His visage, completely devoid of the childish reverie he had from a while ago, was now donning the most genuine look she's ever seen. "However… I don't believe it to be static. I don't truly believe we were destined for one thing, and one thing only. I believe… that we seize our own fate. To claim what is rightfully ours. I don't believe in a fate that is set in stone; a predetermined future you have no choice but to accept. Fate is what you make it to be. The road that you pave for yourself is the future that you will find yourself in - that, will be your fate."

Shinobu found herself at a loss for words, not expecting Aether's words at all. "How… philosophical of you…" However, she then giggled, "But… you do know that's no longer the definition of fate, right?"

He scratched the back of his head, awkwardly laughing, "Erm… I guess so. But… that's what I truly believe in." A brief silence reigned over him, as he gazed at the ground beneath him whilst he was in deep thought. Finally, he looked back towards the green-haired girl, smiling. "Shinobu, I think… you're wonderful."

Shinobu's eyes opened wide, "E-Eh..?!" Where'd that come from..?!

"I believe that whatever you set your heart in, whatever you love, you'll excel in it. That's just what kind of person you are, Shinobu. Whatever path you take, I'll support you. You have a traveler's soul. I believe, that one day, if you really seek that sort of life… one day you'll be able to traverse the world as freely as I can." Aether suddenly grasped both of her hands in his, flustering the poor girl. The Traveler, however, didn't think much of it. "And when that day comes… when your sister recovers and can work again… when you need to speak to your parents about it… I'll be there to accompany you. You have my word."

Shinobu found herself stunned, all of a sudden. Her mind blanked, and before she knew it a big grin made its way onto her face. No longer was there any trace of that despondent, longing girl from just a while ago. Now, she couldn't even contain the burst of giggles and mirth coming out of her. Aether joined in too with a smile of his own, though he was quite confused at what exactly she was laughing at. Before long and her laughter died down, replaced only by a small smile. It suited her, Aether noted. "Thank you, Aether. I… appreciate that, a lot. Thank you."

His smile grew, "Of course. Anytime, okay? We're friends, after all."

"Friends, huh..?" She smiled wistfully, before noticing that their hands were still entwined with one another. "Uh, Aether?"

"Yeah?" Aether asked, completely oblivious. He followed her line of sight and found…

Quickly, he distanced himself from her, keeping his hands strictly to his sides. "U-Uh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to… hold on for that long…"

She laughed, "I don't mind." She fixed her posture on her seat, her front now facing the stall again. She peered at him from the corner of her eyes, finding him still awkwardly shifting in his seat.

Seize your own fate, huh?

Yeah… I can get behind that.

Thank you.

I'll hold you to that promise, okay, Aether?

She gave him a light punch on the shoulder, "You can be oddly suave at times, huh?"

He chuckled, "Heh, well, I try."

"Orders up, you two." The chef in front of them plopped their dishes right before them, the strong aroma invading their senses. Hunger overtook every other feeling they had, as they immediately went to dig in. "Itadakimasu," the duo uttered, before chowing down.

"Took you long enough, you know, gramps. I was feeling really famished there!" Aether quipped, slurping on a piece of meat as he did so.

The chef smiled as he continued with another order, "Well… I saw that whole… situation you two were in, and I didn't really want to interrupt."

Shinobu stopped her hands midway through a bite, "You… heard all of that?"

"Well, yes. I'm in front of you two, after all. No worries, though, I made sure your bowls didn't go cold while you poured all your emotions out."

Shinobu groaned, covering her face with her hands in frustration, "Urgh… please forget that…"

He laughed behind the counter, as he tended to one of his other customers. "I don't mind at all, missy! I know how lively you young folk can be, after all!"

Resigned to the fact that the chef saw it all, she continued eating, albeit with displeasure evident on her face. She looked towards Aether, who seemed like he wasn't paying attention at all, slurping and eating merrily without a care in the world. She smiled at the sight.

They continued eating, feeling their energy replenished with every bite, much to their satisfaction. However, as they carried on with making short work of their food, a resounding yell from across the street made someone's presence known to them. "Aether-aniki!"

Shinobu raised a brow. Aniki?

She saw Aether whip his head towards the source of the commotion. His expression was initially one of surprise, before it ultimately turned sour. His shoulders slumped, as his appearance seemingly lost all energy, depleted as soon as it was replenished. The man, wearing a coned hat, quickly sped off towards their direction, yelling and screaming all the while. "Aether-aniki, you gotta help us!"

"Let me guess, Mamoru. Itto's been imprisoned? Again?"

The man, Mamoru was his name, nodded vigorously. "Y-Yeah! How did you know?"

He sighed as he stood up. "Just intuition, that's all."

"Well, you gotta help us, Aether-aniki! We were just helping the boss put up some flyers around town, when the Tenryou Commission suddenly took him away! Please, aniki, who knows how long he's gonna stay in there!"

Sounds like a hooligan. How exactly did Aether come to know of these… delinquents? Shinobu thought, drinking a glass of water all the while.

Aether sighed, before nodding. "Alright, alright…" Mamoru looked quite pleased with his answer. Aether turned towards Shinobu, his expression morphing into one of regret, "I'm sorry about this, Shinobu… but some urgent matters have made themselves known. I'm afraid I have to cut our dinner short. I'm really sorry… I'll make it up to you sometime, I promise."

"Hey…" Mamoru drawled out, a spark in his usually dull eyes. "...She looks pretty professional… she should come with! Maybe we could convince the guards easier with her along, you know? She has that kind of air to her!" Mamoru chimed in with a suggestion, an outrageous one, if you asked Aether.

He shook his head as he gave a stern glare to Mamoru. "No way. We are not including her with us. She doesn't need that kind of trouble, okay—"

"Why not?" Shinobu shrugged.

Aether looked at her as if she grew another head. "What? No, trust me, Shinobu, you don't want to be a part of these kinds of shenanigans—"

"I mean… it sounds interesting, at the very least. I don't really have anything going on, so I might as well join you. Cap off the night with that." In truth, Shinobu was somewhat aware that this might be an idiotic idea, especially with how moronic this boss of theirs sounds, but anything beats returning home early. Besides, this may provide at least some form of entertainment for her.

"Are you… sure?" Aether asked, very clearly hesitant at the idea of Shinobu helping the Arataki Gang, even if it was only for one night.

"Yeah, positive."

Mamoru jumped, his heart full of joy. "I can see the boss stepping out of that police station right now with a big grin on his face! Welcome aboard to the Arataki Gang, Miss…"

"Kuki Shinobu. Nice to meet you. Mamoru, right?"

He nodded, enthusiastic at the notion of another member, even if only temporary. "Glad to meet you, Kuki-san! Now… let's get going and help the boss, Aether-aniki, Kuki-san!"

Aether groaned, the first time Shinobu's seen him look so stressed today. Either this is a really bad idea, or a really interesting one. Either way, Shinobu figured she'll find out soon enough. Aether laughed, "You're gonna need to prepare yourself for this one. The Arataki Gang… can sometimes be a bit too wild."

"We've had a few rowdy visitors here and there at the shrine before. I'm sure it's nothing we can't handle."

He laughed again, though it was devoid of any mirth. "Yeah, sure… this is a bit different from that, though... These guys are just... really difficult, you know?"

Shinobu found his reaction amusing. Surely this gang of theirs can't be... that incorrigible, like he's making it out to be. "Chin up, Aether. Come on, it can't be that bad, right? I mean, what's the worst that could happen?"

However, I was completely unaware... of just how much trouble that little decision of mine would get me into.

A/N: Hey there! Me and my lengthy titles, huh?

I started writing this fic immediately after finishing Shinobu's Hangout Quest. She's such a fun character! Hardworking, tenacious, and an impressive jack of all trades! She's also cute. I wanted to try something different, with an AU of sorts this time. I also wanted to write a more novice-feeling Shinobu compared to the expert she is in canon, without downplaying her inherent amazing abilities. Therefore, I still wanted to show her great qualities despite being 'shackled' down by her shrine maiden job. This was based off a draft originally meant for a story completely revolving around an NPC, as an experiment of sorts, but it soon was molded into this. Also, sadly Kuki Shinobu has no tag yet on this site! Hopefully they add her in soon so I can change the tags.

Please do tell me if there are any perhaps grammatical or spelling errors that you've catched. I'm finishing this document up quite late at night, so I may miss a few things. I'll be sure to proofread a few more times once published, so there'll be slight changes here and there.

Another thing, and this is pretty stupid, but I found it funny enough to talk about. I was thinking of whether or not I should use that zipper joke in that scene with Aether. Typically, when it comes to the things I write I try to stay within the realm of that world's technology and words, so I tend to avoid aphorisms, analogies and just general words that don't make sense in that setting. However, in a recent Genshin web event, Paimon uttered, "Paimon's got shotgun!" or something along those lines, so perhaps I can have free reign in stuff like that as well. Who knows, maybe there's zippers or shotguns in the world of Genshin!

By the way, shoutout to my friend Papple! He's done some of the cover photos for some of my work! Huge thanks to him and his steadily improving art! Thanks a lot homie.

Once again, thank you for reading through my work and for reading through this author's note. I appreciate your support immensely! Speaking of Support, I'll be writing a new chapter for that pretty soon. Please look forward to it!
