After Harriet is fired at the college reunion, she becomes obsessed with the idea of capturing proof of the Wisconsin Ghost's existence to get her job back. She and Vlad end up getting to know each other during this time, and find they have more in common than they thought.

Many feelings roil inside of her, nearly all of them unpleasant, and some of them a consequence of her still-lingering hangover from last night's depression drinking. The past week has been hellish, and she's just let herself wallow in it, doing nothing but drinking or going out and partying, hooking up, staying up all night and then sleeping in until late afternoon, eating junk food all day, crying in the shower, rinse and repeat./span/p

Some distantly rational part of her mind tries to tell her, not for the first time, to turn around and leave, to just let this go, to accept what's happened and move on, but Harriet is past being swayed by rational thinking at this point, and besides, what has she got to lose? Steeling herself, she reaches the door and slams her fist into it a half-dozen times, harder than necessary just because it feels good to punch something, and then pushes the doorbell a few times for good measure./span/p
