A man wearing a white doctor's coat with a light blue button-up underneath and black dress pants approached me and Dani in the waiting room. "Excuse me, are you two young ladies Eria Lewis and Dani Schuyler?" he asked, looking expectantly at both of us. "Yes, we are. I'm Eria and she's Dani." The doctor nodded and then beckoned the both of us to follow him. Dani and I quietly followed behind the man through the quiet hospital. The only sounds I could hear were the echo of our footsteps on the tile and my breathing.
Finally, we approached a room and the doctor paused. "Mr. Lewis is not in good shape at the moment. We got him as stable as we could but.. He's still unconscious. Do you two still want to see him?" Dani seemed hesitant and beckoned me forward, but I shook my head. "Dani, you're his fiance, you should see him first." "But you're his sister, Eria! You're family. It's only right." Dani argued, but eventually, she sighed. "I'm not.. I'm not ready to see him. I'm glad to know he's alive, that's all I needed. I'll.. I'll visit him another time." And with those words, Dani left.
The doctor turned his attention to me, "What about you, miss? Do you want to see him?" I nodded. The doctor opened the door and ushered me inside. And the sight I saw made my entire body freeze..
Ethan lay motionless on the bed, his brown hair messy with a ventilator hooked up to help him breathe. I could see bandages covering his torso from underneath the blanket, but I could tell he was still alive by the slow rise and fall of his chest. My heart ached as I stared at him. My brother.. In this awful state.. Why would someone do this? But that's how the days continued.
Every single day, whenever I'd have time, I visited Ethan in the hospital. I'd pray, and hope that one day, he'd open his eyes and be able to give us some idea of who did this to him. It was the only thing that encouraged me to get up in the morning. The hope that I'd go to the hospital that day and Ethan would be conscious enough to tell me who hurt him so the culprit could be brought to justice. It was all I wanted.
But that day never came.
