The hour was growing late. The traffic was beginning to slow down, or as slow as it would get in the galaxies busiest city. The clone wars, as the media had dubbed it, had been going on for two years now. Countless battles had been fought, even more innocent deaths had occurred, and it looked like the conflict could continue for years. Both sides claimed to have the upper hand. Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo, was in the middle of writing up a new bill, that would help war victims recover from whatever tragedies they may face when her husband entered her office. They had gotten married at the start of the war, but due to him being a Jedi and her a senator, they had to keep it a secret. The ceremony had been very private, with no living beings in attendance, and although she would have wanted her family and close friends there, at the end of the day she had become Mrs. Padmé Naberrie Skywalker, and that was all that really mattered, even if she didn't go by her new name.
"Ah, General Skywalker. I assume you are here to discuss the new bill?" Padmé greeted with a smile, as she saw her secret husband enter her office. She almost let out a happy squeal at the sight of him, but she managed to suppress it. She was in her distinguished purple senate gown and had a few of its layers removed for comfort, and he was in his signature dark Jedi robes.
"Yes, ma'am." Anakin bowed slightly, trying to suppress a smile, but he only managed to keep the lower half of his face in control, his eyes were beaming at her.
"It's good to see you again," she stood up to shake his hand, before turning to her handmaidens, who were tidying up her office, and her captain of security, Captain Typho, who was stationed at the door, "You can all leave now."
As the door closed, they embraced in a long passionate kiss, that turned into an even longer hug. They stood there for several minutes, just breathing in each other's scent, and enjoying the feeling of the other's company. It had been a month since they had last seen each other, but it felt like an eternity to Padmé. Just last night had she broken down into tears. An almost daily occurrence. The war was tearing at her, or more specifically, the thought of her beloved being away for months on end without any form of contact. She thought he would be away for many months, a thought that really terrified her.
"I have missed you so much. When did you get back?" Padmé asked when they finally broke apart.
"I have missed you too. I got back about an hour ago, I briefed the council, and then made my way over here," Anakin explained
"I thought the siege was expected to last months, so I have to admit that I haven't cleared my schedule."
"It was expected to last months, but Rex, Ahsoka, and I blew up a couple of things, and before you know it. The planet was ours," he grinned, happiness shining from his eyes. Oh, how she had missed that look. The last time she had seen him, he had been visibly angry with the Jedi Council, so seeing him like this was a welcome change.
"Saving the day, as always," Padmé commented with a smile and a small squeeze of his arm
"You know me. I always do." Anakin initiated another kiss, this one was much softer. "So, just how busy are you?" He continued afterward, moving his body even closer to hers.
"Luckily, I'm almost done with drafting this bill. As soon as it's presented before a committee, I will have some time. But it will take a few days and unfortunately, I'm busy until very late tonight. What about you?" she laid her hands on his broad chest, she could faintly feel a new scar, but she put that thought aside, for now, deciding to voice that worry later.
"Ahsoka is training at the temple, Rex and the 501st are in special training for an upcoming mission, and Obi-Wan is on a mission to Mandalore. Therefore, the council has granted me a few weeks off, since I haven't had any time off since this war started."
"Sounds like the near future will be an enjoyable time" she grinned, tiptoeing to kiss him once more. She could never grow tired of kissing him.
"That was my thought too. Which got me thinking, our two-year anniversary is actually next week. And I was stuck on Geonosis last year, and you of course had the healthcare campaign. This year, let's go away together. Just for a couple of weeks."
"Where to?" Padmé's interest was peaked. She had played with the idea herself but always came to the conclusion, that it would be impossible. Still, she decided to hear his proposal
"What about Naboo. Our wedding location. What better place to celebrate two years of marriage, than the place where it all happened."
"Varykino?"
"Yes, exactly. Two weeks without any distractions."
"It sounds lovely, but we both have important jobs. People would notice our absence," she tried to be the voice of reason, even if it hurt her to do so
"I'm sure I can persuade the Chancellor to give me a special assignment so that the council wouldn't know the details, and it would serve as an excuse for leaving the planet, since Jedi time off is supposed to be spent at the temple. And you could say, that you wanted some time with your family. Which would technically not be lying."
"So you want to visit my family again?" She asked, a bit confused. The last time had resulted in her family, or more precisely her sister, discovering her feelings for Anakin. Even before she had admitted them to herself.
"Well, we could do that. But as your husband, am I not your family?" He questioned, a flash of hurt came across his eyes very briefly.
"Of course you are, but can two people be a family? I think that it would require children," she suggested. It wasn't a topic they had discussed yet. Their relationship had been very impulsive. They had gotten married after only a few days of dating, and neither wanted to spend the little time that they had together not being present at the moment by talking about difficult topics. All of which were very uncharismatic for Padmé, she was normally careful and calculated, her past relationships, or lack of, being testament to that. But all rational thoughts went out the window when it came to her husband.
"Not yet, right? We can't bring children into this war. Once the war is won, possibly."
"So you are considering it?" She asked, her eyes lit up with hope. She had always wanted to be a mother, but that want had been placed at the back of her mind. She had decided long ago that she would dedicate her life to the public, but luckily her husband brought the woman out in her, the very woman who had been hidden away from years, when she had decided to focus solely on politics, and forgo any personal life. And in the eyes of everyone else, that was still the case.
"Of course. Truth be told, unless the ways of the Jedi change, I don't expect to stay there forever," he confessed.
"When the war is over, we will revisit the topic," she concluded with a peck on his lips
"Excellent. But regarding that trip?"
"I think it is a great idea. We haven't really gone away together, as a married couple."
"I will set it up," he kissed her once more," I will spend the night at the temple, so people don't get suspicious. But I'm coming home tomorrow". He had been confronted by his nightly absences by both Obi-Wan and Ahsoka. But they had bought his lie about spending his time in the hangar and testing out the new improvements to his fighter.
"I can't wait," she grinned, replying to both him coming home the following day, and their upcoming trip. She couldn't remember the last time she had been this excited about anything. Perhaps only her wedding day had topped this. And even that day had been filled with a lot of doubt. Not about marrying Anakin, she could never doubt that. About marrying a Jedi, whilst there was a galactic war going on.
5 days later, they made their way to a public transport ship, as they had done on their previous trip. They wanted to experience the trip exactly as they had done 2 years ago. And Padmé, as a Senator, was curious to be amongst the common people. Usually, she was restrained to the upper levels of Coruscant by her security team.
"It's a lot less cozy than I remember," Anakin remarked as they stepped onto the vessel. It was filled with refugees and sick people.
"I was surprised that my security team let me travel like this. Typho is usually so protective."
"You don't think I could protect you?" Anakin teased and led her towards two semi-isolated seats in the corner, "Besides, I don't think anyone could recognize us under these large capes, and these two holo-projectors. Anakin had spent a considerable amount of time developing a holo device, which could display a different face. He had worked on it whenever he had free time away from Coruscant, it made Padmé think back to the boy she met all those years ago on that force-forsaken planet.
"I have seen you fend off hundreds of droids at once. I feel perfectly safe." She replied, "It's a shame I can't say that for the rest of the people on this transport. They are suffering. Force, I hate this war so much,"
"Me too angel, me too," Anakin pressed a kiss to her temple. They sat in silence for a few minutes, just observing the people in front of them, before Anakin broke the silence, "So, what do you want to do when we get there?"
"I don't know, I thought you had a plan. I was just following along."
"Normally, my plans involve something blowing up. I don't imagine that is how you saw this vacation turning out."
"Please, keep the explosions to a minimum," she laughed.
"I can't promise anything," He smirked. "How about we just enjoy each other's company, and be a normal married couple, whatever that actually means."
"Sounds like a good plan. But what did you mean by that last bit?"
"You are the only married person I know on a personal level. The Jedi are obviously not married, and neither are the clones. Which only leaves you, and the chancellor. And I don't think he is married."
"And?" She prompted with a raised eyebrow.
"That just leaves the question, what does a married couple usually do? What did your parents do when they were alone," Anakin asked.
"Ydr, Sola and I have heard what they do, when they think they are alone. And I'm sure there will be time for that, but that memory has completely killed the mood for me. So maybe next year," Padmé winced. Which resulted in a chuckle from her husband.
"Other than that, what does a married couple do?"
"It sounds like you are not sure what you signed on for, Master Jedi."
"I just knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you, but you are right. Marriage was not a discussed topic by my mother or the Jedi order."
"Well, marriage is about commitment. We are a team in everything, and we both have to compromise. The 'I' becomes a 'We'. And you have to watch whatever your partner wants on the holonet."
"Nice try, the ice on Hoth will melt before I watch another documentary about the political climate of Mon Cala, or worse a political drama regarding banking regulations," he groaned at the memory.
"Those weren't the two best episodes, I will admit that" she paused and leaned closer before whispering, "But I can be very persuasive". It made Anakin swallow hard and redden. She loved what she could do to this man, it made her feel powerful. Until she remembered he could do the exact same thing to her. That happy laugh of his and a hand through his hair had made her knees betray her more than once. Despite being two years deep into their marriage
"I- I will think about it," he stuttered.
Later that evening, the couple got off the transport ship, and found the speeder that Anakin had made sure was waiting for them. They got to the villa half an hour later. The villa was as lovely as they remembered. Neither of them had been there since the wedding, almost two years ago.
"This is the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary," Padmé commented once they had settled in. She had spent the past half hour unpacking and reorganizing her wardrobe. Anakin had suggested that she didn't pack anything at all, claiming that she wouldn't need it. But, she had decided to go against her husband's wishes and packed enough clothes to last a whole month.
"I couldn't agree more," Anakin grinned. "And in three days it will be exactly two years since we got married on that very balcony."
"Where did the time go?"
"I'm not sure. It seems like only yesterday, but also like it was an eternity since. So much has happened in the last two years."
"It's crazy. With our normal schedules, I think it's only fair for us to have two weeks off,"
I couldn't agree more. So, regarding the plan. I was thinking that we would visit my parents tomorrow, and then spend the rest of the time here, and in the city."
"Sounds like a great plan. What can a married couple do in Theed?"
"We can go shopping," Padmé suggested, she wasn't quite sure how her reaction would be received
"For clothes, and such?"
"Usually, yes."
"I have never tried it before, it might be fun."
"Then it's settled," she concluded, beaming at him. She had yet to see him in anything other than Jedi ropes, whatever disguise he would use on a mission, and his "birthday suit". A part of her had always wanted to know what would fit him, she had no doubt that he would look good no matter what he was wearing, but she also had no idea what would actually fit him. The Jedi ropes didn't compliment his looks much, but they were probably designed that way, she thought.
"Come on, I'm tired. Let's go to bed," Anakin's voice snapped her back into reality.
Padmé didn't reply, she just took his hand in hers and led him into their bedroom. Anakin happily followed.
