Amos began to tilt his head to the side and frown when his eyes were on one ostrich sticking its head in the sand.

He glanced at Kara. ''I have no idea why the ostrich would stick its head in the ground.''

Kara frowned. ''The ostrich is turning her eggs,'' she said.

''Oh.''

''The ostrich isn't really burying her head in the ground. Are you familiar with a certain saying? Bury your head in the sand?''

''Not really,'' Amos said.

''You don't want to acknowledge anything bad.''

''What are you saying?'' Amos asked after he squinted.

''You mention returning to your master sometimes. Are you forgetting your bruises? Unity ordering you around?''

''No, but Unity gave me a sense of purpose,'' Amos said.

''He also enslaved you,'' Kara said.

Amos glowered and refused to say anything else.

''You're burying your head in the sand again,'' Kara muttered. She focused on Amos even when he walked to another area of the zoo.
Kara started to turn to a mother tiger roaring near her baby after it pawed her side. She thought Amos smiled. Scowling, she focused on him again.
''Don't get any ideas,'' she said.
