Double Trouble

Chapter 1

Best-selling mystery novelist, Richard Castle, has been married to NYPD Captain, Katherine Beckett Castle, for five years. They have a 2-year-old daughter, who is the apple of their eye, named Lily. Castle continues to write mystery novels, while Kate continues to keep the streets of New York safe.

Castle wakes up every morning before Kate. He gets up to check on Lily, make breakfast, and get Kate her morning coffee.

Kate rolls over onto her left side and reaches for Castle. She wakes when she realizes he isn't there. She sits up looking around the room searching for Castle. She can smell coffee coming from the kitchen. The smell of the coffee causes her stomach to churn. Kate quickly gets out of bed and runs to the bathroom. A few minutes later she exits the bathroom and walks toward the closet. She picks out clothes to wear for the day.

After getting dressed, she walks out to the kitchen where she sees her husband preparing breakfast. Kate sees Lily sitting in her highchair watching Castle work in the kitchen. As Kate sets her bag down on one of the bar stools, she greets her family. "Good morning."

Castle looks up from what he's doing to smile at his wife. "Good morning."

Kate walks over to the highchair and kisses the side of Lily's head. "Good morning, Lily Pad."

Lily looks at Kate with a big smile and reaches up for her. "Morning, Mama."

Kate bends down, slightly, to give Lily a hug. "What are you doing? Are you watching daddy?"

Lily claps her hands and giggles. "Uh-huh. Daddy cooking."

Kate smiles at Lily. "Daddy's cooking? What is daddy cooking?"

Lily's brows furrow and lifts her hands a little. "I no, no."

She chuckles. "You don't know? Let's investigate, shall we?"

"Okay!" Lily raises her hands up in the air.

Kate removes the tray from the highchair and picks her up. "Okay. Let's see what daddy's doing." Kate walks around the kitchen counter, holding Lily, to see what Castle is making.

When Kate stands next to Castle, he leans toward her to give her a good morning kiss. He smiles at her after the kiss. "Hi."

She chuckles at him as she shakes her head. "Hi. What are you making?"

"Breakfast."

Kate gives him the Beckett eye roll. "I realize that babe. But what exactly are you making?"

"I thought I'd make you an omelet this morning."

"A regular omelet? Not a smorelette?"

"No smorelette. I'm just finishing up cutting up some mushrooms and tomatoes. It should be ready in a little bit." Castle stops cutting the vegetables and gets Kate her cup of coffee.

Kate sets Lily down on the ground before taking the cup from Castle. She holds the mug in both hands and takes a whiff of it. Her stomach starts to feel queasy again. Nevertheless, she takes a sip of morning coffee. The coffee barely touches her tongue, when she sets the mug down on the counter and races to the bathroom.

Castle notices Kate's haste and is concerned. "Kate?" He sets down the knife, washes his hands, and takes Lily's hand. Hand in hand, he and Lily walk toward the bedroom. "Kate? Is everything okay?"

Lily, not knowing what's happening calls after Kate. "Mama?"

Castle can hear Kate in the bathroom. "Honey, are you okay?" He picks up Lily and puts her on the bed before walking into the bathroom.

Castle walks into the bathroom and sees Kate kneeling in front of the toilet. "Kate? Honey, what's wrong?"

Kate lets go of her hair and sits herself down on the bathroom floor. "Ugh, I don't know. This is the second time I've thrown up this morning."

He furrows his eyebrows. "Was it something you ate?"

"I don't think so. You and I ate the same thing last night. I haven't eaten anything this morning."

Castle goes to sit down next to Kate on the floor. "It came on suddenly?"

"Yeah. I woke up when I noticed you were no longer in bed. The next thing I know, I'm smelling the coffee and then I'm dashing off to the bathroom."

He rubs circles on Kate's back to soothe and comfort her. "The smell of coffee made you nauseous? That's never happened before."

"I know. It's weird." Kate stands up to go over to the sink. She rinses her mouth out and washes her face. "I know you put a lot of effort into making me breakfast, but I think it's safer if I just had a couple pieces of toast."

"Of course. Don't worry about it. I just want you to feel better. Lily and I will go make you some toast. Just do what you need to do."

"Thanks, babe."

"Always."

Castle exits the bathroom to get Lily. He picks her up off the bed. "Come on Lily Pad. Let's make mommy's breakfast."

"Is Mama, okay?"

He gives Lily a kiss on the cheek. "Yeah. She was feeling a little sick, but she's okay. She'll be okay baby girl."

A little while later, after composing herself, Kate walks back out into the kitchen. Castle sets a plate down on the counter with Kate's toast. He sets a to-go cup down next to the plate.

Kate looks at him, like she's going to hurt him. "Castle. I never thought I'd say this, but no coffee."

"Relax. It's tea. I know you're not a fan of tea, but it should help ease your nausea."

She softens her look and smiles. "Thanks, Castle. That's thoughtful of you."

"Always. You're my wife. My best friend. I love you and I want you to feel better."

"I love you, too."

"I wuv you, too", says Lily, who doesn't want to feel left out.

Both Kate and Castle answer Lily, "we love you too, Lily Pad."

Later in the day, Kate is sitting at her desk when a wave a nausea hits her. She starts to stand up to go to the bathroom but realizes she won't make it. Instead, she grabs the garbage can that's next to her desk.

After she throws up, for what feels like the one thousandth time, she grabs her phone off the desk and makes a call.

The phone rings three times before it gets picked up. "Hey girl! What's going on?"

Kate grabs a tissue from her desk and wipes her mouth. "Hey Lanie. Are you busy?"

"I'm still running some tests, but I always make time for my best friend."

"Ok, thank you. I'm heading there now."

"Girl, you know you don't have to call. You can always just show up. That's what you've always done before."

"Thanks, Lanie. I'll see you soon."

A little while later, Kate walks into the morgue when another wave of nausea comes. Lanie is barely greeting her when Kate runs over to the garbage bin.

Seeing Kate run to the trash, Lanie is concerned. "Hey girl. Are you okay? What's going on?"

Kate stands up straighter, after leaning over the garbage, and wipes her mouth with the back of her hand. "Ugh. I don't know. I've basically been throwing up all day."

"Was it something you ate?" Lanie removes her gloves, washes her hands, and gets Kate a cup of water.

"I don't know. This morning I had some toast and Castle made me some tea." Kate walks over to a counter and leans against it.

"Hold up. Did you just say you had tea this morning?"

Kate gives Lanie a little nod. "Yeah. Castle made coffee, but the smell of it made me nauseous. The smell and taste of coffee made me throw up a few times before I left the loft. So, Castle made me some toast and tea to help with the nausea."

Lanie hands the cup of water to Kate and furrows her brows. "What could it be? Has the smell of coffee made you nauseous before?"

Kate sips the water Lanie gave her and shakes her head. "No. I can't ever remember being queasy from the smell of coffee."

Lanie thinks about it for a moment. "Kate?"

"Hmm?"

"Could you be pregnant?"

Kate is taken aback. She nearly drops the cup of water Lanie gave her. "What?"

"Is there a possibility you could be pregnant?"

Kate hesitates to answer. She ponders on it for a bit. "I… I don't know. I'm 40 years old, Lanie. I have a 2-year-old daughter. I have a husband who is 50 years old, but still acts like a child."

"So? Girl, women can still conceive while in their 40s."

Kate takes another sip of her water. "I don't know Lanie. Castle and I are careful."

"Kate, you should know that contraceptives are not always 100% affective."

"Yeah, I know that. But I don't have any other symptoms. As far as I know I haven't missed my period and my boobs aren't sore."

"Are you thinking about the time you were pregnant with Lily?"

"Yeah. When I found out I was pregnant with Lily, my boobs were sore, and I was throwing up all the time. But Castle and I were trying for a baby then. Not now. We hadn't even discussed it. We've just been enjoying our time with Lily."

Lanie pats Kate on the back before getting back to work. "Look Kate, not every pregnancy is the same. Just make an appointment with your doctor. It's better to get checked out to make sure it's nothing more serious."

Kate downs the last of the water before standing up straight. "You're right. Thanks, Lanie. I better be getting back to my desk. I have a lot of paperwork."

"Let me know how everything goes."

"I will. Thanks again." Kate throws her cup away before leaving the morgue.

A few days later, Kate is sitting in the waiting room of the doctor's office. She is waiting for her name to be called. She arrived at her appointment early to fill out any necessary paperwork. While waiting for her name to be called, she reads the book she brought.

Kate manages to read through one chapter when her name is called. "Katherine Castle?"

Kate saves her place in the book and closes it before standing up. She grabs her things and walks to the door where the nurse is standing. She greets the nurse standing at the door and follows them down the hall toward the exam room.

Once in the exam room, the nurse has Kate sit on the exam table. The nurse then asks Kate a series of questions. After the questions have been asked, the nurse takes Kate's temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate. When the nurse has finished doing what they need to do, they let Kate know the doctor will be in shortly.

After the nurse leaves, Kate takes out her book and continues to read where she left off.

The doctor knocks on the door, Kate marks her spot in the book and closes it. "Come in."

"Good morning, Mrs. Castle." The doctor smiles at Kate before looking at her chart.

Kate sets aside her book. "Good morning, doctor."

"How are you feeling this morning."

"Uh, I'm feeling okay. Still feeling nauseous, but I haven't thrown up yet, today."

"Okay. Things look good on your chart. How long have you been nauseous?"

Kate counts on her fingers to calculate. "Um, it's been about four or five days."

The doctor makes a note. "Um-hm. Out of those days, how many of them have you thrown up?"

"Every day. I've thrown up at least twice every day. Today has been the only exception, so far."

"Okay. And do you suspect you may be pregnant?"

Kate shrugs her shoulders. "I'm not too sure. It's possible. My husband and I enjoy being physically intimate. We've been careful. We have a 2-year-old daughter and I just turned 40 about a month ago."

"Well Kate, women can still get pregnant in their 40s. It's a little more difficult, but it's not impossible. I'm sure you know that contraceptives aren't always affective."

She nods. "Yes. I'm aware they're not always affective."

"Okay. Let's run a few tests to make sure there's nothing else going on. I'll have you do a urine sample and I'll draw some blood to test it."

"Thank you, doctor."

"You're welcome."

The doctor gets all the samples they need from Kate, before sending her home. "We'll give you a call Mrs. Castle, as soon as we get all the results back."

"Thank you." Kate grabs her things and leaves, heading for work.

A couple of days before Christmas, Kate's phone rings. She's sitting at her desk at the precinct when she sees it's the doctor's office calling.

She answers the phone after a few rings. "Hello, this is Kate."

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Castle. I'm Samantha calling from Dr. Long's office."

"Yes. Hello. How can I help you?"

"I'm calling to let you know we got your test results back." There is a slight pause on the other end of the line and Kate waits with bated breath. "Congratulations! You're pregnant!"

Kate's jaw drops. She's pregnant. She is in shock and disbelief. "Oh, wow. Thank you."

"You're welcome. Happy Holidays. And congratulations, again."

"Happy Holidays to you, too."

Kate ends the call and just sits in the chair. She doesn't know what to do. She can't believe she's pregnant again. How is she going to tell Castle? WHEN is she going to tell Castle? After contemplating for a few minutes, she gets an idea.

To Be Continued

A/N: When I originally started writing this story, I planned on it being one chapter. However, as I was writing it, it ended up being a lot longer than I anticipated, so I split the story up into two chapters. I hope you enjoy the rest of the story.
