I've recently been embracing that I'm nonbinary more lately, so here's a fic about Lucifer being trans 'Cuz I wanted to write it.

I wrote this before season 6 came out (and I actually haven't finished season 6 yet because I need to be in a very particular mood to want to watch Lucifer), so this is actually kinda old. I just never got around to posting it. This fic isn't my best work (I wrote it about a year ago), but it is what it is. Make sure to read the warnings.

The day had started out quiet and uneventful, which, in their line of work, was a good thing, no matter how much Lucifer moaned about being bored. Just as Chloe was about to tell him to go home if watching her do paperwork wasn't exciting enough for him, however, a call came in about a murder, and they rushed off to investigate.

"Finally," she heard Lucifer mutter.

Chloe had half a mind to point out that the man shouldn't be glad that someone was dead, but she just let it drop. She knew that Lucifer wasn't happy about the death, just that it was something to do, something exciting, and even if it was disrespectful and borderline callous, she was more than used to it already. Besides, at this point, she had figured out that Lucifer did care about these people (now, at least), in his own way. He just also liked to have fun while getting them justice. It wasn't like he was the only one who enjoyed a thrilling case at times.

When they arrived at the scene, they found that Dan was already there, seemingly waiting for them.

"Hey, Dan," Chloe greeted. "What've we got?"

"Yes, hello, Detective Douche."

Dan, ignoring Lucifer and his insulting nickname, trained his eyes on Chloe.

"We've got one victim, covered in cuts. Looks like the cut to the neck probably killed him, but we should wait for Ella to confirm that before we make too many assumptions," Dan informed her. "He looks young too, probably a teenager."

"Alright," Chloe spoke with a nod, going into detective mode so that she didn't have to feel her heart breaking for a murdered child. "Let's take a look."

And with that, she and Lucifer followed Dan back to the bustle of the crime scene, Lucifer being oddly quiet for the moment, but still walking with a pep in his step.

The body was as Dan had described- covered in cuts, the largest of which was a slash across the neck. From what she could tell, most of the other wounds appeared to be superficial. What Dan had failed to mention, however, was that the kid's shirt was ripped open, and across their chest was the word 'F**got'.

"… Forget to mention something, Dan?" Chloe huffed.

"Right. That," Dan sighed. "I, uh… didn't want to say it."

Hearing their conversation, Lucifer, who had been distractedly looking at a nearby bag, tuned back in.

"What's that?"

And then he looked over, and to Chloe's surprise, he didn't make any inappropriate comments. Instead, he briefly brought a hand to his mouth and breathed in a sharp, hissing breath.

"Oh, bloody Hell," he cursed. "So we're dealing with a bigot. Lovely."

Chloe nodded a few times, carefully watching Lucifer's expression, which had lost all of it's excitement and had started to shift into the enraged expression that usually meant he was going to throw someone through a window or into a wall once he found them. She only hoped he calmed down before they caught whoever did this, or else she'd likely have to find a way to explain what happened to the suspect without getting Lucifer arrested as well (again).

It was then that Ella showed up, jogging over to them with her kit in hand to begin collecting evidence from the body.

"Sorry it took me so long to get here, I had to finish something for another case," she chattered, only to stop abruptly when she spotted the body and the word carved into it. "Oh. Oh, no."

Chloe sighed, knowing that this was probably going to be one of the cases that hit Ella hard.

"Right. So, it looks like we're dealing with a hate crime," she huffed. "I'd guess our perp killed him for being gay, so there's our motive."

Surprisingly, Lucifer spoke up at this, but it still wasn't the kind of rude comment she would have expected.

"Her, actually."

For a moment, all was silent. Chloe felt her face shift in confusion as she looked toward her partner.

"What?" Dan questioned. "Um, Lucifer, they don't have…"

Lucifer rolled his eyes.

"If you had simply looked at her purse, you'd see she has a pronoun pin and a trans flag button," he sighed, pointing toward the bag he'd been looking at earlier.

"Oh. She's trans," said Ella.

"If she's trans, then why would the killer write… that on her?" asked Dan, more to the air than anyone in particular. "Like, that's a slur toward gay people, isn't it?"

Again, Lucifer rolled his eyes.

"Well, she could have been a lesbian," Lucifer told him. "Or the killer might just be stupid as well as ignorant. A lot of bigots just group people they don't like together and don't particularly care if they're using the right terminology or not."

Lucifer grimaced at the body, grinding his teeth a bit.

"Either way, we're going to make sure whatever human stain did this is punished accordingly."

"Yeah. Yeah, we are," Chloe agreed before turning to Dan. "Has anyone checked for ID yet? She looks young, so we're probably going to have to inform her parents…"

"Not yet," Dan denied.

"I'll do it," Ella announced. "There might be some evidence in her purse… God, I just can't believe there are people who would do something like this… I mean, I know we deal with murders all the time, and it's not like I don't know that this happens, it's just… sad that this kid got killed just for being who they are, ya know."

"Ella…"

"Yes, well, trans people get murdered at rather high rates. That, and there's high rates of suicide," Lucifer spoke up again, sounding a bit distant. "At least we can rest assured that isn't part of dear old dad's plan. You humans came up with transphobia all on your own."

The first thing that struck Chloe was the fact that Lucifer had actually just said something positive about his father. Which was probably the strangest thing that had happened today. The next thing that struck her was that Lucifer seemed to be genuinely upset about this murder, and not just because someone was escaping justice.

So, while Ella started to gather evidence, Chloe took her partner aside.

"Hey, are you okay?" she asked, eyebrows furrowed. "You seem upset."

"Of course I'm upset!" Lucifer exclaimed incredulously. "You've seen what some low-life did to that poor girl!"

"Yeah, I did. I did, it's just…," Chloe trailed off a bit, trying to sort out what she wanted to say. "You don't get too upset about most our cases, not from just seeing the body, at least, and when you do, you're usually more angry than-"

"I am angry!" Lucifer shouted, cutting her off. "So instead of wasting time chatting, let's go find this piece of garbage, hm?"

And with that, Lucifer began stalking away, and Chloe had to follow.

"I don't know, Dan, he just seems really upset about this case," Chloe spoke into the phone that night. "And I mean, I get it, but I'm worried about him."

She stirred the pot of mac and cheese, quickly glancing toward Trixie's door to check if she was eavesdropping. Seeing the door shut, she turned her attention back to the phone.

"I dunno, Chlo, you know he gets like this sometimes," Dan pointed out. "Just make sure he doesn't run off on his own, yeah?"

"I know he does, Dan, but it's… Usually because he has some kind of personal involvement in the case. Like when his storage container was stolen, or that guy pretended to be him."

"… Maybe it is personal?" Dan suggested. "Maybe he knows someone trans? I mean, he's like Bi or something, right? So maybe he has other LGBT friends?"

At this, Chloe paused.

"Oh. You're probably right."

She turned the stove off, moving over to the cabinet to grab some bowls.

"… You don't think he knew her, do you?"

"I doubt it. The kid was a bit too young to be hanging out in most of his circles, and he probably would've said something about it."

Silently, Chloe thought that he maybe wouldn't have, but she did accept that he probably would have said something that hinted at it enough for her to have asked him about it further.

"Alright. I have to feed Trixie, so I gotta go, Dan."

"Got it. Talk to you later, Chlo."

And as she hung up the phone and called to her daughter for dinner, Chloe thought she maybe understood her strange partner just a little more.

The victim turned out to be 16-year-old Jessica Stanz, a runaway from Pennsylvania. Or, maybe not. She didn't know what other word to use, but Jessica had actually been kicked out by her parents rather than ran away, and somehow, she ended up in Los Angeles. Through their investigation, they found out that she was living on random friends' couches and on the streets.

Chloe's stomach churned as she talked to the parents. On the one hand, she couldn't imagine the pain of losing your child, of having their ashes sent to you through the mail, of never seeing them again, of knowing they were murdered. On the other hand, though, she couldn't help but feel angry at them. Part of this, she thought, was their fault. If they hadn't thrown their child onto the streets, this wouldn't have happened. She couldn't even imagine doing something like to Trixie, even if she had actually done something wrong- but this child hadn't done anything. It certainly didn't help that the parents wouldn't stop misgendering and deadnaming the poor girl.

Chloe saw red as they told her how much they regretted not sending her to a camp to 'make him stop this nonsense' rather than regret throwing her out. Which was illegal in the first place since Jessica was a minor and still legally her parents' responsibility, but she didn't know what, if anything, she could do from across the country, especially since she would probably be pressured to drop it in favor of sparing the parents' feelings.

And again, it wasn't like she had no sympathy for them, but… she found it hard to have very much of it when they clearly hadn't cared about their child enough to do even the bare minimum.

Even still, she had to remain professional for the duration of the phone call, only hanging up once it was appropriate. Then, she released her white-knuckled grip on the phone and set it down.

"Hey, are you okay, Chloe?" Ella asked, seeing her as she exited her lab. "I know calling the parents is tough."

"Yeah. I'm fine."

"Well, you don't look fine," Ella pointed out. "Actually, you look kinda pissed."

"Jessica's parents kicked her out for being trans," Chloe explained. "Which made it kinda hard to keep my voice sympathetic."

"Oh, geez…," said Ella. "That really sucks."

Silently, Chloe nodded and thought that she was glad Lucifer wasn't there right then, or he might have gotten on a plane just to punch those parents.

And Chloe wasn't even sure if she would have stopped him.

They got the guy.

She did, in fact, have to stop Lucifer from killing him, but they got the guy.

They caught him the next day, and it hadn't even been difficult. He had been bragging about it on a Reddit page, and someone sent them screenshots. From there, they investigated the user and found their IP address. Apparently, their killer had been stupid enough to use his own personal computer to post from, and the posts contained information that hadn't been made public yet.

It wasn't a particularly involved case, but she knew that it had affected her and her friends more than many of the cases they'd worked.

Even with having relatively little difficulty in locating the suspect, Lucifer did find him first, even if by only a few minutes. He ran in before she could stop him and broke down the man's apartment door, and the only reason Lucifer hadn't punched his face in was because Chloe had grabbed his arm at the last second.

The suspect, of course, used this opportunity to try to escape by running past them, but Lucifer managed to reach out and grab him by the shirt, which quickly changed into him holding the man by the neck.

"Lucifer, please let go of him," Chloe spoke, trying to speak calmly. "We've got him, and he's gonna go away for a long time."

"He deserves much worse than getting locked up, detective!" Lucifer spat out, glaring at the man in his grip, who was struggling a bit, but Lucifer apparently wasn't applying enough pressure to cut off airflow, as the man could still speak.

"I did the world a favor in killing that f**," the man hissed. "You can lock me up, but I'll always have God on my side!"

For a moment, Chloe felt the air around her grow cold, though she was sure it was only her imagination. Lucifer became unsettlingly still for a painful second before slowly moving to lean his face close to the man he had pinned against the wall.

"You have no idea how wrong you are."

Lucifer's voice was callous, filled with a quiet, simmering rage that almost made Chloe herself feel like running. But she was held in place by the oppressive air around them as the man began to scream.

"YOU'RE THE DEVIL! LET GO OF ME, YOU DEMON!"

It was then that Lucifer let go of the man, allowing him to fall to the floor and scramble back in a panic. Luckily, he fled further into the room instead of out the door, and Lucifer slowly stalked toward him in pursuit.

"GET AWAY FROM ME!"

The man quickly found himself with his back to the wall, and this time, Lucifer crouched down on the ground in front of him, whispering:

"See you in Hell."

And then the killer fainted, his eyes rolling back into his head. This was when whatever spell was holding Chloe in place broke, and she stumbled forward.

"Lucifer, what did you do?!" she questioned as she checked the man for a pulse.

Thankfully, she found one, so she breathed a relieved sigh. She wouldn't have to arrest her partner for murdering a murderer.

"I merely gave him a sneak peak of what will await him," Lucifer replied, his tone glib. "… Someday, I hope."

Chloe sighed.

"Alright, I think you just scared the crap out of him," she concluded as she began to cuff the suspect on the floor.

"Good. It's the least he deserves."

"Lucifer, I understand that you're upset about this. I get it. I'm upset too," she told him. "But you can't keep doing stuff like this, or you're going to end up getting in trouble."

Instead of replying, Lucifer merely crossed his arms and scoffed. Knowing she wasn't going to get anywhere on the whole 'due process, don't attack the suspects' thing, Chloe just checked to make sure the cuffs were secured.

"Let's just get him back to the precinct," Chloe suggested. "We have the evidence, Lucifer. He's not getting away with this, alright?"

Lucifer wouldn't meet her eyes, but he did run a hand through his hair, and eventually, he gave in.

"Alright. Let's just arrest this bastard."

The case was over- closed, done with, everything all wrapped up with the criminal behind bars.

Somehow, they'd all decided to get drinks to celebrate, but the mood wasn't really right for partying. Which usually wouldn't have been a problem for Lucifer, at least, but he was currently the main source of the negative aura surrounding them.

Rather than go to a bar, even his own club, they ended up in Lucifer's penthouse drinking a bottle of whatever Lucifer pulled off of his shelf. No matter what it was, it was probably expensive, though.

The four of them sat there awkwardly for a while, with Dan slowly sipping from his glass and Lucifer having already thrown back three cups' worth of the stuff. Neither Chloe nor Ella drank anything yet, but Ella was gripping the cup in both hands, looking between the three of them.

"So. We solved the case," she announced. "Another killer behind bars."

"Yes, and another innocent person dead," Lucifer pointed out, punctuating his sentence with another glass of alcohol.

"Lucifer-"

Chloe wasn't even entirely sure what she was going to say, but Lucifer didn't let her finish, anyway.

"You know, you humans kill for all sorts of utterly stupid reasons," Lucifer continued. "Money, jealousy, power, whatever. But it's especially stupid when you decide to kill in the name of my father, and you don't even follow what He wants."

When Lucifer tried to pour himself another drink, Dan reached out to stop him.

"Hey, Lucifer, maybe slow down a bit."

"Oh, it hardly matters, Daniel," Lucifer laughed. "My metabolism is far faster than a human's."

Knowing he wouldn't be able to stop the man (especially since he owned a literal bar), Dan just shook his head and retracted his hand. Chloe, meanwhile, took a deep breath in and prepared herself for what might end up being a disastrous conversation.

"Lucifer, are you okay?" she asked finally.

Another sip.

"Why wouldn't I be?"

He changed position, crossing his legs.

"Lucifer, you scared a man so badly that he passed out," Chloe stated.

She could see Dan's eyebrows shoot up as Ella finally took her first sip of her drink, but neither of them said anything.

"Yes, well, he murdered a child in cold blood, so," Lucifer returned. "I don't exactly pity him."

"Lucifer, I'm not- I'm not scolding you here," Chloe corrected. "I mean, you do need to work on how you handle these cases, but that's not what I'm talking about here."

"Then please enlighten me as to what you are talking about then, Detective."

"I mean that this case has affected you- really upset you, and," explained Chloe. "We're all worried about you. Usually you only get like this when a case affects you somehow and you end up projecting onto it."

"I do not-"

"Yeah, ya do, man," Dan cut him off.

"Right, so what is this? An intervention to get me to stop getting invested in cases?" Lucifer asked. "I hate to break it to you, but you lot aren't exactly the poster children for aloofness."

"No, Lucifer, Chloe isn't saying not to be invested in the cases," Ella chimed in. "I think all of us, including you, just want to help people, and sometimes these things can be upsetting. So we just want to make sure you're okay."

"Right," Chloe added on. "We're here for you, so if you want to talk about it, we'll listen."

Lucifer suddenly abandoned his previous efforts at looking at anything other than them and stared her right in the eyes, as if he was trying his 'desire' trick on her.

"Talk about what?"

He spoke slowly, as if daring her to speak.

"Just… Well, we thought maybe you have some trans friends, or maybe that you're upset about bigotry because you're Bi or… something," Chloe explained.

At this, Lucifer just blinked for a moment before his threatening aura seemed to diminish, and he deflated.

Then, he laughed.

Just laughed, his shoulders shaking and a smile, one she couldn't figure out the sincerity of, until he eventually laughed himself out.

"Um, you doing okay, buddy?" Ella asked slowly, not quite sure what to do.

"Yes, yes, I'm fine," Lucifer chuckled. "But. You're wrong. Or half-wrong, I suppose"

"Wrong about what?" Chloe questioned.

Then, Lucifer took a deep breath in.

"Alright. You've caught me. I'm upset about the case," Lucifer admitted.

"Okay," Chloe accepted. "So, do you want to talk about it?"

"Before that," Lucifer sighed. "Am I right to assume none of you are transphobes?"

"What? Of course not," Chloe replied.

"Yeah, man, we're not like that."

"We'd never…"

Lucifer took in another breath.

"Don't worry, that's what I figured," Lucifer accepted. "Just… making sure. So."

He leaned forward a bit, threading his fingers together. There was a long pause as Lucifer looked away from them again before bringing his gaze back toward Chloe.

"I am upset by bigots in general. I mean, they're just plain terrible, and they just love to invoke the name of my father while they commit their atrocities," Lucifer began to rant. "Which, as I said earlier, is ironic because my father isn't like them and certainly never told them to be that way."

He tilted his head.

"But I digress," he continued. "The truth is, I…"

But then he trailed off.

"Lucifer, you don't have to tell us if you don't want to," Chloe clarified. "We were just saying that you could if want to."

"Well, no, it's not like it's a secret," Lucifer told her. "It's more that it just never came up before now, and I'm not exactly used to… doing this."

He shifted again.

"Truth is… This case does hit a little close to home," Lucifer admitted. "But not… quite for the reason you think."

"Okay. So what is the reason, then?"

Yet again, Lucifer paused to take a drink. Once he had drained his glass, he reached over to set the cup down on his coffee table.

"Because… I'm like her," Lucifer stated simply. "Only the other way around."

Hearing this, Chloe froze out of pure surprise as her mind tried to process what he said. Her mouth still wasn't working by the time Dan spoke up.

"Wait. So you're saying- You used to be a woman?" he asked.

"No," came the answer. "It's a common misunderstanding, but you see, I was never a woman. My body just didn't match my brain."

"Oh. Sorry," Dan apologized. "You just- you pass really well."

"Why, thank you."

And as Lucifer grinned, Chloe considered that statement.

She really never would have thought that Lucifer is trans. In fact, she'd seen him- naked. Granted, she'd intentionally kept her eyes trained on his face whenever such a situation came up, but still.

Well, she figured he probably had enough money to get the best surgery possible.

She wanted to tell Lucifer that she accepted him. She wanted to tell him that this didn't change anything, that she wouldn't treat him any differently. But instead, what came out of her mouth was:

"Wait, is that why your father kicked you out of the house?"

That made everyone else freeze, except Lucifer let out another laugh.

"What?" he laughed airily. "No, no, weren't you listening? You all know how I feel about my father, but despite all that, he isn't transphobic. Actually, he… Well, he helped fix my form back when I was young- before the rebellion. It's one of the few things that I can't get mad at him about."

"Oh, your father helped you transition? That's sweet?" Ella interjected, trying to lighten the conversation.

"Until he kicked me out, yes," Lucifer huffed. "You don't need to be transphobic to be an ass, but yes, once he realized his mistake in creating me, he helped fix it. Interesting thing about that, actually. You see, when souls form, they don't exactly start out with a pre-set gender. That has to develop on its own, and sometimes… things don't match up."

Chloe found herself nodding her head.

"Huh. Alright. Well, Lucifer, this doesn't change anything, alright? We don't see you any differently," Chloe finally managed. "Thank you for telling us."

"Yes, well, I did hope that would be the case," Lucifer replied. "But enough of that."

Chloe did still have a few questions. Mostly, she wondered why Lucifer behaved the way he did toward women when he probably knew what it felt like being treated like one (even if he wasn't). Maybe that's why he acted like that- because that was how his male role models acted, or maybe it was some misguided attempt to prove he was a man. She didn't know.

She did also wonder about the surgeries, but she knew that wasn't exactly her business, and she didn't think she would ever end up asking about that.

Then there was his father. Lucifer clearly hated the man, and based on what he's said, those feelings weren't entirely unjustified. And yet, he did apparently care enough to help his son be the person he truly was. She'd known that Lucifer had a complicated relationship with his father, but maybe it was even more complicated than she'd thought.

But maybe that meant that Lucifer had a chance to reconcile with him? Or at least make peace and move on?

Maybe.

But now wasn't the time for all that. For now, she would just make sure her partner knew he was cared about. Even if the world was full of people who thought he was wrong, that he shouldn't exist, Chloe would do what she could to make him feel safe and welcome.

And looking around her, she hoped that plan was off to a good start.

XXX

Alright, so there's the story.

I haven't found very many trans Lucifer fics, but pretty much every one I have found has had God and the angels being extremely transphobic, and I don't really like that (especially having it be the reason why Lucifer was cast out of heaven). I don't believe in Christianity or God, but I think if God was real (as he is within the show's canon) that he wouldn't be a transphobe. 'Cuz if he is, and God created the universe and made the rules, I feel like that kind of justifies transphobia a lot? Like, if you're gonna have God be real and make him transphobic, then I feel like it kinda says being transphobic is actually correct? (Even though I understand that God isn't supposed to be perfect in the show, and he makes mistakes, I feel like the being that created the universe being and remaining transphobic for forever is… not the way I'd like things to go).

So, yeah.

(Also, the title is just 'cuz cotton candy is usually light pink/blue/white. So. Trans colors, idk)

Thanks for reading! :3
