October 2017
Chris Redfield mumbledto himself one an early morning he was getting ready for work. Things were going fairly well, considering he had been working down at the Raccoon City police station for almost two years, the job was something he could keep busy with, he made a few good friends and it put food on the table.
Working for the Special Tactics and Rescue Squad was an experience he wasn't going to lose track of for sure. His luck was getting a tad worse though and he frowned thinking about it while fixing himself up in the mirror. He had a comfortable shower this morning, the warm water doing wonders for him.
Why did I have to start crushing on my Captain?
Chris frowned somewhat thinking about his awkward position, buttoning up his pale green regulation shirt before smoothing the fabric down to get rid of the wrinkles that formed overnight.
He was thrown for a loop when he realized his simple admiration for his Captain turned into something more personal, now understanding what the swirling butterflies in his stomach meant. Or how shaky his hands would get when his Captain looked his way and he couldn't forget how hot his face would be from staring at the man for too long.
Chris had it bad and he was worried it was going to wedge in with his work. He had to look like a ripe tomato every time, as he had this habit of blushing like a giddy schoolgirl. Captain Wesker was like a dime piece. He was tall and statured, had an incredibly toned body hiding under his uniform and not to mention how professional the man was at all times. He had never seen him shirtless before but he had quite a few daydreams about his Captain and... they definitely gave him an idea.
Sighing, Chris ruffled a hand through his brown hair before looking himself over in the body mirror. Freshly shaven with a hint of cologne that Claire got him for his birthday two years ago. He looked decent, the uniform shirt showing off his lean build attractively and the matching pants curling around the muscles in his thighs and waist.
Clipping his black vest on even though he didn't need it, the brunette made his way through his apartment to head outside. Grabbing his keys and iPhone from the kitchen counter, he made sure to lock the front door. Hearing his phone ping, he glanced down at the screen on his way to his car, smiling when he saw it was a snapchat notification from Jill. She was probably getting ready for work and usually liked to use those silly filters with her voice high pitched.
"I'll get back to you later, Jill. I've got to drive." He spoke to himself with a bright smile, getting inside his 2011 Ford Fusion, the metallic grey paint beginning to chip from wear but he barely paid any attention to that. His phone pinged again so Chris waited until he was at a red light before unlocking his phone and taking a selfie with the dog filter.
After typing in 'Meet you there!' in a group chat involving Jill, Barry, Richard and a few other members of S.T.A.R.S, he set his phone down into the cup holder before giving all his attention to the road. Chris couldn't afford such a nice phone regularly but thankfully he found a decent plan for him and Claire that didn't bite too much into his check.
Chris turned right into the parking area in the back of the large station, finding his normal parking space. Locking his doors and making sure he had his phone and wallet in his pocket, he made his way through the building and stole a quick glance at the shooting range. Making a mental note to head there later, the brunette made his way upstairs and towards the S.T.A.R.S office.
Another officer from a different unit came out of the bathroom as Chris passed it, giving him a courteous nod before disappearing behind him. Running a hand through his brown locks, Chris smiled when he found Samantha Bryers standing outside the office, holding something in her mouth as she rummaged through her purse. She let out a few mumbled curses when it seemed she was having a bit of trouble.
"Need some help?" Chris offered and smiled when Samantha nodded, handing him her purse so she could take the toasted bagel out of her mouth. "You're a life saver, baby! I was trying to find my badge but it got lost in my hole of a purse."
Her eyes flickered, a bit of green in them but it was her cute nickname that made Chris's cheeks turn a bit pink. She could be a little flirty but Samantha was a very nice girl despite that and one heck of a dancing partner. She got transferred to this unit a bit after S.T.A.R.S was formed initially and the two became fast friends, he adored her company and her constant teasing of him in a flirtatious manner. From what he knew, she was in the Peace Corp for a while before joining an armed commissions force.
"Gotcha!" She announced triumphantly when she found the silver badge, grinning before taking her purse back from him.
"Anything for you." Chris smiled when Samantha blew him an air kiss as her thanks, still feeling a small tingling sensation in his cheeks. He held the door open for her before closing it once he stepped in afterwards. She took a seat at her desk so she could finish eating her bagel while the brunette made his way over to his mess of a desk, papers and a few pens scattered a bit.
He tried organizing it as best as he could but settled for sweeping everything into one of his drawers, rolling his eyes when he heard Jill snicker at him from behind.
"Morning Chris! You didn't send anything else in the chat." Jill swirled her chair around the wheels so she could face her best friend, a charming smile on her pretty face.
Chris chuckled lightly, placing some pens and pencils into the plastic holder before swiveling around to greet her. "Yeah I'm sorry about that, I had to keep my eyes focused on the road because I'm not trying to get a ticket. I wouldn't have the money to spare for it." After tidying up what he could, Chris sighed and clicked a few keys on his computer to get his reports pulled up.
Jill's nose scrunched up a bit, her brown hair framing her face wonderfully. She looked particularly carefree this morning, her beret sitting on her desk. "Oh, I didn't realize that! But if you ever needed help with that sort of thing, you know you can ask me for help, right? I wouldn't mind giving you some money if you needed it. I care about you, you're my best friend."
Chris sighed then, his mood dropping slightly at the mention of how low cash income. This job provided him with enough that was for sure but after balancing everything so he could pay for it all, he was left with just a little to get buy. His nightly dinners consisted of noodles in a cup, having greasy pizza delivered or microwavable dinners and it was too much of a sensitive topic to be discussed here. It made him feel pretty small.
"I'd rather not talk about it, if that's okay with you." Jill's face fell, blue eyes shining with concern. Chris turned away from her then, trying to hide his oncoming frown as much as he could but he succeeded. He didn't like making her sad but Chris didn't like talking about these types of things - at work of all places. His private life was his personal business and although they were best friends, now wasn't the place for that sort of conversation.
Thankfully, the woman left it alone and everyone else in the office began getting some paperwork done. A few other members came in, starting with Richard who flashed him a cheery grin and then Whitney who was tying her curly red hair up into a ponytail. Forest was busy doing something or another near the weapon's cage while Samantha was practically sprawled across her desk, pen tipping back and fourth in her hand.
A few prolonged minutes went on in the quiet office space, the sounds of papers being shifted and such floating around. The door finally creaked open after what felt like such a long time, Chris's head snapping up as Captain Wesker finally made his presence known.
He looked somewhat agitated but that was pretty much normal as the man often looked this when coming into work and often, when leaving work. Chris usually averted his gaze when the Captain was like this and now was one of those times, timidly scribbling something down on some paper.
Wesker hadn't bothered to greet his subordinates and turned into his smaller office, the door closing behind him with an audible click. Nervously chewing on his pen, Chris kept his eyes trained on the closed door as he wondered what happened. The most obvious he could think of was the blonde man having to deal with another meeting with Chief Irons because after every one of those, he came back looking angry. The brunette could understand that, Irons could be unbearable and he seemed to enjoy barking at anyone who looked at him the wrong way.
Sighing softly, Chris got focused back on his work. There was no pointing in thinking about how upset Wesker was, even if he did care, because the man looked like he hated people or just hated associating with them.
A few hours or so went by with the others milling out, completing files and some reports that needed a few final touches. Jill had finished her earlier per usual while Samantha chatted quietly with Barry nonchalantly about something but Chris wasn't paying attention to them, his mind drifting.
Jill noticed him stargazing and scooted her chair towards him, biting back her smile when she accidentally bumped too hard into his desk, causing him to jump. Scowling at her when she started giggling, Chris flung his pen cap at her. "Don't do that to me! Are you trying to give me a heart attack!?"
"Oh come on, it was an accident! You weren't even paying attention to me anyways, I know where your mind goes when you start daydreaming. I'm surprised you aren't drooling again!" Chris gawked for a moment, feeling the heat fuse in his cheeks. There was no way Jill knew that he... was crushing on Captain Wesker, not when he did all he could to keep it a secret from everybody he came in contact with on the daily.
"I - uh - I don't know what you're talking about, Jill." Chris tried to cover his tracks but he could tell from the mischievous look on her face that his expression probably told her all that she needed to know or worse, that his blush was visible. Jill scooted a bit closer before crossing her arms knowingly, her smirk melting into a smile that just radiated her knowledge and that she probably knew about his feelings, much to his horror.
Jill snickered, not noticing how uncomfortable the brunette was getting.
"You can't lie to me Chris, I'm your best friend and I've known you for two years. I know you've been staring at the Captain when no one's looking but don't worry, I'm not going to say anything. It's not like he'll notice anyways, he's too busy being a brooding hard-ass." Her tone was joyous but Chris wasn't feeling her teasing, his ears scorching hot and his eyes bright with nervousness because he had no clue she found out.
Was I that obvious? God, I'm pathetic.
Chris's thoughts were running rampant in his mind now, wondering how burning hot his face looked. He hadn't tried to make his feelings known at all and more importantly, sure as hell didn't want anyone knowing about it. He was still trying to figure out and understand his own sexuality and when he realized he was having feelings for Wesker, it shocked him to the core.
As far as he knew, Claire was the only one he admitted to that he was interested in men and he wanted to keep it that way. Jill knowing about it not only made him incredibly embarrassed but also made him feel super small.
Still sitting there frozen, Chris continued to stare at the woman with furiously red cheeks before she finally noticed his uncomfortable expression and frowned. "Hey Chris... you know I'm just messing with you, right? I'd never say or do anything to hurt your feelings, you know that."
Exhaling lowly and feeling the burn settling down in his face, Chris grabbed the water bottle she handed to him and took a long sip, the coldness helping him a bit.
"No no it's not that it's just... Jill, this whole thing is confusing to me and I'd rather not talk about it here or... or anywhere else with people I'm not comfortable with knowing." Seeing her face fall, the brunette scrambled to re-word himself.
"I didn't mean you! You're my best friend, I can't imagine not having you in my life." Chris admitted lowly, not used to airing such things in the work place. Jill's expression was something he hadn't ever really seen before, her cheeks blossoming into a light pink and her lips curling into a trembling smile, as if she was going to burst into tears. They were best friends, Chris really adored her company and would never turn his back on her and he was pretty certain it was the same for her.
"Don't make me cry!" Jill chided with a playful smile before her eyes glittered over with that familiar concern that Chris would never get tired of seeing.
Moving a bit closer, she reached over and tenderly placed her hand on his arm out of comfort, her fingers smooth because of the peach scented lotion she used daily and Chris could feel the warmness biting his cheeks because it was soothing, comforting, something he needed. "Chris, I mean it when I say that you can come to me for anything. You don't have to hide things from me if you need help, okay? Please tell me if you need anything?"
Chris sighed lowly, feeling his heart beat finally calm down. "I know that and I'm sorry for worrying you but really, I'm doing fine and so's Claire but I promise that if I do need anything, I'll let you know. Now will you get off my back and keep your nosy face out of my business?" He grinned slightly when Jill feigned a pout.
"I'm just looking out for you and your crush, you know. I might even be able to help you with that if you want - "
Reeling slightly, Chris shook his head quickly. "No! That's really the last thing I need. It'd also be kind of pathetic too, I'm stupid for feeling this way for a man who's probably married or something. I'm the biggest idiot but it's my fault, I did this to myself." Sighing, he lazily skimmed through some sheets on his desk before feeling Jill's soft hand tighten on his bicep, the feeling making his heart thump a bit.
"Cheer up Chris, I think you're making it worse than it actually is and you're letting it get to you more than you should. It's just a crush, right? It's not that big of a deal and it's not like Captain Wesker knows about it anyways. I'm sure he's just - "
"A very good listener, Miss Valentine."
Chris gaped soundlessly, his face heating up in seconds as he jerked back from her tender touch on his arm. Jill retracted only a little bit but made sure to straighten up in front of their Captain, knowing from the curiously raised eyebrow and the displeased look on his face that he had heard enough.
Feeling his heart pounding, Chris nervously tried to gather himself but couldn't help wonder how that looked - Jill leaned over closely to him, her hand laying affectionately on his arm as if the two of them were about to share a kiss.
"Sorry, sir." Jill spoke, trying to sound as sincere as possible but Wesker still looked down at the two with this interesting but obviously annoyed expression on his face. "Was there something you needed Captain?" Chris couldn't be more grateful for Jill knowing when to get any situation under control as he continued to sit there with the heat scorching his cheeks, not daring to look up for a second.
Wesker made a small sound and shook his head, a thin but small strand of his light blonde hair coming undone and gently touching his forehead. "Actually, yes. I was going to have the both of you be on look out duty due to recent suspicions of narcotics being carried throughout the area near the metro but now however, I do not think that's such a wise idea." Jill shared an equally confusing look with Chris, not understand what he meant.
Jill sat up straighter and made sure to have her chair facing him. "Why not? Did we do something wrong, sir? I finished all my reports for the afternoon and I think Chris was just finishing up the last of his."
Wesker made that same sound again, the little displeased hum that the two of them had gotten used to hearing over the two years working with the blonde.
Wesker crossed his arms over the midnight blue uniform shirt he had on, the sleeves having been rolled upwards to reveal pale but toned forearms. "I don't know Miss Valentine, did you? The two of you seemed awfully close to one another a few moments ago and I'm afraid I cannot have any fraternization between my squad members on the job, let alone touching in the workplace - "
Chris actually choked on air as he heard those words, that turning into a coughing fit as Jill blinked in surprise before her expression melted into one of pure anger. She looked downright offended at the accusation and Chris had to take a few sips of his water bottle to calm down after what they just heard.
Wesker didn't finish his previous sentence and just rose a thin brow again. "Was I wrong in my assumptions?"
"Yes!" Jill was the first one to speak up in defense, sounding truly angered. "I apologize for getting loud with you but you can't just make up things about me or Chris, sir. That's how rumors get started and just so we're clear on this for the future, we're just FRIENDS. Nothing more and nothing less and I'd like to be respected by you more. I work hard to serve you and do what you ask, Captain."
Chris gawked a bit but nodded along with her, not believing Jill had the audacity to speak to the man like that but it was inspiring.
Wesker looked a bit relieved but that was the only thing Chris could try and compare to the expression on his face now. It almost looked like he was glad to hear that the two weren't together but it was hard to know with the man, he was too mysterious and no one could piece together what he felt or more importantly, what he thought. A small smirk touched his lips before the blonde began talking again.
"Well forgive me for my previous behavior, I didn't mean to imply anything." Hearing Wesker actually apologizing had Chris fighting back an oncoming blush but could feel the blood stinging his ears. "Moving on, I got some information regarding some illegal activity down near the metro and I was advised on having a look out near the area. Would you two be interested in heading down there? It would not take all night."
Before Chris could speak, Jill cut him off and offered the blonde one of her charming but knowing smiles. "If it's all the same to you Captain, I'd rather stay behind and catch up on the Montoya case from last week but I'm sure Chris would be willing to go with you instead. We both know he loves working under you, sir."
Chris could have choked again from Jill's obviously dirty input, suddenly hoping and praying that the floor would open up in mass and swallow him whole.
As he fought the redness pooling in his cheeks and his eyes burning hot, Chris had to duck his head down to his lap while he heard the woman snicker lightly in response. He was going to get her for that one, as soon as he fought the embarrassment of actually being under him.
Wesker pondered this for a moment before that familiar but very small smile touched the corner of his mouth, actually looking pleased with that idea.
"An interesting suggestion, Miss Valentine. As you may know, Redfield is a valued member of my team and I'd like to evaluate his abilities a tad more should we run into any trouble." The sudden praise had Chris practically bursting into flames, just praying that God would strike him down at any moment.
"Meet me down in the parking garage in fifteen and don't be late, Redfield. I have an urgent matter to tend too at the moment so if you please, do not keep me waiting." As soon as the blonde man was there, he was gone just as quickly and had left the office altogether.
Jill waited until she was sure he was gone before bursting out in laughter, the brunette raising his head pitifully and already knowing his face was as red as a tomato.
"Looks like you're going to be some extra time in with the Captain after all." Chris scowled pathetically but had no strength to try and defend himself, instead grabbing a file folder and opening it so he could bury his face into it in hopes of disappearing forever.
What the heck had Jill just gotten himself into?
Wesker's vehicle was just as he expected it to be, the automobile black and sleek to perfection and he was sure he wouldn't even be able to name the brand.
Nervously, Chris stopped a few feet away from the car and nervously ran a hand through his messy hair. The blonde man noticed and stopped before he could get in the open driver's door. "We don't have time to waste, Redfield."
He snapped himself out of it and hesitantly got into the expensive car, almost afraid to touch the leather seats. It even smelled good, the fresh hint of lavender or linen making him wonder why he didn't do a better job to clean his own car. It also didn't fit Wesker at all but then again, the man was nothing but a mystery outside of work so it wasn't fair on his part to try and make assumptions.
"Uh, I'm sorry Captain... I just really like your car." Chris flinched inwardly at his own shaking voice and regretted his words instantly, knowing he sounded like a total suck up complimenting his car like that. He wasn't trying to be like that but for a moment, he was caught off guard how nice the car had looked. If he had to guess, it was probably of foreign orientation and had cost plenty no doubt.
Wesker smirked lightly as he pulled out of the parking lot swiftly and into the streets, the sun still peaking behind clouds since it was the middle of fall. "No need to apologize, I do appreciate a good compliment every now and then." There was an unknown tone in the man's voice, one that he couldn't place, and Chris was sure he could see his cheeks turning red through his sunglasses.
As the two drove in silence, passing by the vibrant city lights of Raccoon City as they eventually neared the substation, Chris could not help himself and let his eyes do a bit of wandering since he thought the blonde had his eyes strictly on the road.
Chris never felt like this towards any of his superiors in the air force but then again, none of them had been as handsome as Wesker was.
Even if he couldn't see the man's eyes, he was still incredibly good looking. He was reserved, calm and always had this type of demeanor that just screamed professional. It seemed like everything about him was perfect and that showed through his slicked hairstyle, not a strand out of place, his cleanly shaven and well-defined face and his broad shoulders.
Realizing he had been staring for the first moments they were driving, Chris snapped his gaze back to the busy road in front of him. Wesker made a left turn after the light turned green, pressing a thumb into a pad that allowed warm air to begin filtering through the vents. The brunette was eternally grateful for this as the chilly air from the windows being cracked open was beginning to bother him.
"My apologizes, I didn't realize you were cold." Wesker finally spoke to break the silence between them and Chris exhaled slowly in return.
"It's nothing Captain but thanks, I didn't notice how much the wind picked up." As he said that, the brunette quickly fished around in his pocket before pulling out his iPhone so he could check the weather. As he was doing so, he got a notification from snapchat and the pinging was pretty loud in the confined space.
"Sorry, that was so loud." Chris muttered before quickly muting the notifications but all Wesker did in response was let out a low chuckle filled with amusement.
After pulling up near the parking cross that allowed entry into the substation, Wesker put the vehicle into park before feeling around on the inside of his vest for something. Chris watched with curious eyes and watched the man pull out an expensive looking phone that was sleek and a glossy black colour. It put his phone to shame immediately, there was no comparison.
"I was wondering why that sounded so familiar. Do you have that ridiculous app that everyone has been using as of late? The one with the filters?" Wesker questioned as he scrolled through his phone for something, the brief reflection on his dark sunglasses letting the younger man know he was searching for something.
Chris blinked before looking down at his phone, seeing the notification came from the group chat from earlier. He ignored it and set his phone down, a bit of interest flooding him now as he watched Wesker look through his phone.
"Uhh yeah, it is. Why? Do you know about it?"
Wesker chuckled again, the sound beginning to sound welcoming. "Just a simple question Redfield but of course I know about it. I have thought of downloading it before."
Chris blinked then, wondering if he looked shell shocked because he couldn't believe what he heard. Why would his Captain want to use something as silly as snapchat? He had an expensive phone but he honestly looked like the type to have nothing saved in his camera albums and only used it for work.
"Well uh... it's pretty stupid if you think about it. It's just a cheap messaging system but the plus is all the filters and stuff, you know? A lot of kids and teenagers use it mostly but Jill convinced me and I've kind of been obsessed with it. It's good for helping you wind down." Letting out a small laugh, Chris didn't realize what he said until it was too late.
"Ah, I see. Perhaps I may use it after all then, Redfield. You have convinced me." Chris was sure he was hearing things or he was in some sort of alternate universe because there's no way Wesker just said he might use the app sometime. Not really knowing why, the brunette felt his heart pound at the thought of the blonde using one of the filters but the mental image of him with the cute dog ears just made the heat fuse in his cheeks again.
Wesker unbuckled his seat belt before unlocking the interior locks. "We're going to be on look-out near the downstairs metro tunnels where a lot of traffic goes by. I trust you to be on your guard and pay attention, Redfield. I did not bring you along just so we can dilly dally and waste time. The safety of Raccoon City is important and I need your cooperation."
"Yes sir, of course sir." Chris agreed whole heartedly and unbuckled his own seat belt. Before he got out of the car though, he noticed the blonde suddenly feeling around on his vest before starting to search through the glove department.
Unsure if he should say something, he cleared his throat calmly before inquiring with an, "What are you looking for, Captain?"
Wesker looked at him then and although his eyes were still covered protectively, Chris could practically feel those eyes boring into his mind.
"I seem to have misplaced by flashlight." His voice was laced with aggravation but before he could even ask why the man needed one when it the sun was still out and there would be lights in the substation, he was greeted to his reflection in those sunglasses again.
Without saying a word, Wesker slowly reached over Chris's lap and the feel of the steely arm brushing ever so lightly against him made his chest tighten and his heart practically burst with an unknown feeling. He didn't know what to say, he didn't know what to do so he stood there as still as he could manage as Wesker felt around in the side compartment of the door before shockingly, pulling out the small black flashlight he had lost.
"Ah, there it is." There was a smirk laced onto the man's thin lips but all Chris could think about was how dangerously close that arm was to touching against his hidden crotch, how close the man had been and how he could smell the hint of whatever cologne he wore.
"We should get to work then, Redfield. The longer we wait and the longer the window is open for those people to slip by unnoticed."
Chris couldn't speak for a few moments, his heart jumping around in his chest like it was ready to just explode. His face was furiously hot with embarrassment and some other indecorous feelings but he tried to stamp them down as much as he could because even though he strangely enjoyed the man's arm touching against him, he still had a job to do and getting a sudden stiff one when he was so close to Wesker was a nightmare waiting to happen.
"Y-you're right sir, I'm sorry sir." Quickly opening the door and stepping outside, Chris was now eternally grateful for the wind chill because it soothed the burn in his face, just wondering how red he was or worse, how he looked during all of that. He fretted as he stood outside the expensive car, gnawing down on his bottom lip nervously because of what just happened.
Was that an accident? Was it done on purpose? Wesker had always been a rather interesting person, to Chris anyways, but that was just completely off the radar.
After mentally fighting with himself, he was snapped out of his thoughts when his Captain cleared his throat a bit, now across the street and near the entrance to the metro, a bit of rain from earlier on still glistening on the pavement.
"Anytime now, Redfield. I do not have all night, you know." Chris nodded and hurried towards him, pushing his thoughts to the back of his mind for now. They had work to do.
I hate posting here but for anyone wondering - this is a more domestic take on Chrisker /3
