"If we find Murphy, then hopefully we'll find Crawford, and they'll lead us to... Are you alright Maggie?"

"Hmm?" Maggie lifted her eyes to his face.

"Are you ok? You're looking a bit pale."

She scrubbed her hands over her face. "Yeah, I'm ok. Well, I am feeling a bit off. Maybe it's something I ate."

PJ's brow furrowed. "Something you ate?"

Maggie gave him a weak smile. "Dash cooked last night."

"Ah, right. Are you going to be right to come out to Cunningham's Road?"

She stood up, more slowly than usual. "Yeah, sure. I'll be fine. I'll just go and... splash some water on my face or something."

PJ followed her out.

...

A few days later, PJ walked into the locker room to see Maggie resting her forehead against the cool metal of her locker door. She straightened up when he walked in.

"Maggie, are you ok? Did Dash cook again last night?"

"What? Ah, no, no, she didn't."

"You don't look so good."

"I'm fine."

He tried to catch his eye but she avoided his gaze. "Maggie, are you..."

She snapped. "Don't fuss, ok? I said, I'm fine. Come on, we'd better get out to the Eagleby place or the Boss'll go spare."

Again, PJ followed her out, but his frown stayed on his face.

They headed out on their business, which turned out to be completely unsuccessful, then headed back to the station. As usual, they discussed the case but as they drove back towards town Maggie's replies became shorter and less frequent, and she kept her eyes fixed on the horizon. When they reached a tree-lined spot a few minutes out of town, she interrupted him.

"Can you pull over here please?"

As soon as he'd stopped the car, she opened her door and leaned out. He expected her to vomit but she didn't. She just leaned out into the fresh air and looked at the ground. After a long moment, PJ got out of the car and went around to her side, watching her carefully for any signs that he needed to jump out of the way.

"Maggs, what's going on? It's not like you to get car sick."

She raised her head and took a deep breath. "I'm not car sick."

He chuckled. "You're something. I've been watching you the past few days..." he ignored her heated glare at this information... "and something's not right. Maybe you'd better go and get checked out."

"I know what it is."

"Oh yeah, and what is it then, Doyley?"

She held his eyes and his brow furrowed further. Now he was concerned that it was something serious.

"I'm pregnant."

He just about fell the short distance from his crouched position to the ground. "You're what?"

"I took a test this morning."

"Well who's is it?"

She smiled at his cluelessness, unbuckling her seatbelt and twisting to face him. "Who's do you think?"

"But it was only that one time."

"Clearly one time is all it takes."

"You're sure?"

"Who do you think I am? There's been no one else since Roman."

He straightened up, processing slowly. "You're pregnant. We're pregnant." Maggie's apprehension got the better of her and she turned away, missing the moment that his confused frown turned into a joyful smile. "We're having a baby!"

The next moment, she was being pulled onto her feet and engulfed in a hug. She spoke from her position buried in his shoulder. "So you're pleased?"

"Of course! Why wouldn't I be? I mean, it's unexpected but..." He trailed off, gently separating from her so he could look at her face, "You're not happy?"

"Well, unexpected is certainly the right word." She paused as another wave of nausea hit her and passed. "What are we going to do?"

He trailed his finger down her jaw and kissed her gently, their first kiss since escaping from the mineshaft. "We'll figure it out, Maggie. I'm going to look after you. Both of you." He face lit into that grin again as he said the words.

She wanted to return his smile but it turned into half a sob. "I know you will, PJ. I just... I had plans. I wanted kids one day but... not yet. I wanted to establish my career."

"I know you did. You still can. Sure, you'll need to take a bit of time off, but we'll get you back into it as soon as you want. Hell, I'll even be the one to stay home if that's what works."

She smirked at the ridiculousness of that notion. "Oh really? You're very cavalier about all this."

"Well, the shock hasn't worn off yet." He tried to tone down his grin and look serious for a moment. "Maggie, there's no one in the world that I've ever wanted to do this with more than you. And I think that, maybe, you might be ok with that too?" Her head bobbed in a tiny nod. "Right. Well, let's just keep hold of that then, and sort the rest out later, hey?"

"Thank you, PJ." She pulled him into a fierce hug that matched his from earlier. "Hey, we'd better get back."

"Yeah." They separated reluctantly and got back into the car. Before PJ started the engine, he placed his hand over hers. "Just us, for now, I assume?"

"Yeah. I know it can't be forever, but..."

"Yeah. Well, you ready to go?"

"Yeah."

The last few minutes of their journey were silent, both of them lost in their thoughts.

When they pulled into the station, Nick was just getting out of the car beside them. "How's you go?"

Maggie answered. "No luck I'm afraid. Percival claims that he didn't know a thing about it."

"Then why's PJ grinning like the Cheshire Cat?"

Maggie gaped at Nick as she tried to come up with an excuse. PJ beat her to it. "It's a beautiful day, mate. Can't a bloke just enjoy the beauty of a beautiful day?"
