The Best Day

Taylor Swift's mother-daughter song The Best Day inspired me to write this little ficlet. Tina and Toriel haven't had nearly enough moments together, so I wanted to remedy that. :)

...

Seven year old Tina and six year old Felicity ran happily through the grass, wearing their big coats. It was a beautiful fall day and the family had decided to visit the pumpkin patch.

Tina looked around, soaking it all in. She could see Frisk and Papyrus looking at a really round pumpkin while Papyrus happily talked about making the coolest and scariest jack o' lantern anyone had ever seen. Sans was taking a nap, using a pumpkin as a pillow, while Chara playfully stacked leaves on her boyfriend's head. Asriel, Alphys, and Undyne were hurrying to join the line at the Pumpkin Chuckin' contest.

It had been the funnest day ever! They had gotten to go on a tractor ride, petted the baby goats at the little petting zoo that was set up, gotten their faces painted(Tina had her face painted to look like a kitty, while Felicity wanted her skull decorated like the Day Of The Dead ones she had seen), ridden on all the rides they were tall enough to go on and jumped in piles of leaves, all while her mommy and daddy laughed and took their pictures.

"Look, Tina! I found the best pumpkin!" Felicity called out to her. Tina happily came running over. Felicity had found a really big and really tall one, and when she tried to lift it off the ground, she couldn't even budge it. Tina tried to help her, but even both of them working together could only move it a few inches.

"Here girls, I will get that for you." Mommy called as she came over. Being a goat monster, she was really big and strong and lifted the pumpkin effortlessly. "Is this the one you want?"

Felicity nodded happily. "Yeah!"

Mommy smiled. "And which one would you like, Tina?"

"Umm..." Tina said thoughtfully, looking around to find another really good one. Her eyes lit up as she saw a medium sized, perfectly round one. She ran over and picked it up, managing to lift it off the ground. She grinned. "Look, Mommy! I'm almost as strong as you are!"

"You are!" her Mommy agreed with a smile. "Now let us go show your dad the pumpkins."

"Yeah!" Tina cheered and they headed off to join her Dad, who was picking out a few more pumpkins. He enthused over her and Felicity's choices and took even more pictures.

Frisk and Papyrus soon came back to join them, and Sans finally woke up, shaking leaves off his face and making Tina, Felicity, and Chara giggle. Asriel headed back to them, a big bag of peanut butter cookies in his head and Alphys was carrying one as well, while Undyne was holding a big trophy.

"I got second place in the Pumpkin Chuckin' contest." Asriel announced proudly.

Alphys laughed. "Mine didn't go very far but they gave me cookies anyway."

"And I won!" Undyne cheered. "I may have kinda broken the catapult though..."

"Oh Undyne..." Toriel sighed and Tina giggled, leaning against her mommy, looking up at the sky. The sun was setting and it was making everything turn gold and pretty.

They all gathered their pumpkins and put them in their inventories, heading back to ride the tractor back towards the car. Tina sat next to Toriel, snuggling into her, starting to feel sleepy from all the running and playing she had done today. She felt Felicity cuddle next to her and listened as her older siblings talked and laughed, a smile coming to her face.

As they got off the tractor, Toriel picked up Tina while Asgore picked up Felicity. Tina looked up at Toriel adoringly. "I had the best day, Mommy."

Toriel smiled and kissed her head. "I'm so glad."

((Six Years Later))

Thirteen year old Tina was simmering as she rode home from school with her Mom and Felicity, though she tried to hide it to keep from worrying Felicity. Still it kind of showed when she slammed the door a little too loud on the way in. Both Felicity and Toriel looked at her in worry as this was something she never did.

"Sorry." Tina mumbled and headed to her room, shutting the door behind her. After a few minutes, Felicity timidly tapped on the door, asking if she wanted to talk, but Tina told her that she didn't want to right now. When she heard Felicity leave, she flopped down on her bed, burying her face in her pillow with tears in her eyes. She had had the worst day ever. Her so called "best friend," Ashlyn had cancelled the shopping trip they had planned this weekend, saying her parents wanted her to babysit. Tina had been okay with that, but then she heard Ashlyn and two of the popular girls excitedly talking about the concert they were going to on Saturday, the same day as their planned shopping trip. Ashlyn had then caught Tina standing there and her face had flushed guiltily. Tina hadn't known what to say, so she just ran off.

Not to mention it felt like now they were in junior high, they were drifting further apart. They didn't have as many things to talk about, and had taken different electives, and Ashlyn was hanging out more with the other girls in her new classes than she was Tina. Tina missed her, but she didn't want to be pushy.

Had she totally lost her best friend?

Her soul ached at the very thought.

And then there was a soft tap on the door. "Sweetheart, may I come in?" she heard her mom ask.

"Mmm..." Tina mumbled and the door opened. She felt the bed dip as Toriel sat down next to her, then a soft hand rubbing her back.

"I know you must have had a bad day at school. Would you like to talk about it?" Toriel asked after a moment.

Tina thought about it for a moment, then nodded, sitting up and snuggling into her mother's side. She sobbed out the story and Toriel held her close, letting her cry as Tina poured out her heart and soul. She didn't push Tina for more details, and gave advice only when Tina asked for it.

She just...listened.

And it was enough.

And that Saturday, she, Tina, and Felicity piled in the car and they all went to the new mall together for a girls day. They laughed, talked, and window shopped, and Tina found herself nearly forgetting her problems.

She still wasn't one hundred percent sure what to say to Ashlyn despite her and Toriel discussing it, or if they truly had drifted apart. But she came to realize that everything would be okay. No matter what happened, she still had her other friends at school and her family.

And as she laughed with her mother and Felicity on the car ride home, one thought came to her mind.

"I had the best day with you today."

...

Four years later, seventeen year old Tina was chosen to sing a solo for her high school's Mother's Day concert. And she knew exactly what song to choose.

Taylor Swift's The Best Day.

As she sang the final lines, her eyes scanned the audience, meeting her mother's. Toriel's eyes were sparkling as she sat in the middle of Tina's huge family. She was watching Tina with so much pride.

"Now I know why all the trees change in the fall," Tina sang. I know you were on my side even when I was wrong." The next lines caused her to look to Frisk, who was sitting between her mother and Papyrus, beaming up at Tina. Frisk may have been her sister, but like her adoptive mom, she too had raised and loved Tina like her own child, despite how young she had been and how much she had gone through. "And I love you for giving me your eyes. For staying back and watching me shine."

She gazed lovingly at both of them as she sang the final verse. "And I didn't know if you knew, so I'm taking this chance to say; That I had the best day with you today!"

As the song finished the audience cheered. Her family was the loudest, jumping to their feet and giving her a standing ovation. It was kind of embarrassing.

But she wouldn't trade it for anything.

After the concert concluded, she left the gymnasium and was immediately wrapped in the arms of her family and friends as they told her how great she had done. Tina happily hugged them back.

Toriel kissed the top of her head as she held her close. "I am so proud of you, sweetheart. And your song was so beautiful."

Tina smiled widely up at her mom, remembering back to when she was six, falling through a hole on the top of a mountain looking for Frisk, and ending up safely in Toriel's arms. She thought of everything they had done together. "Every word of it was true. And Mom?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Thank you for giving me so many of my best days."
