Hello! This is a Cheol x Miae fanfic I wrote from a prompt by another aslfua fan on twitter. I will be sharing the prompt at the end of the story, to not spoil the story. Hope you guys like it ^^
It was early morning. The alarm rang loudly, and Cheol woke up with a groan. He slowly got off his bed, and went to wash his face and take a bath. He continued to follow his daily routine, even in his half asleep state and was now about to get into his uniform. However he saw something that made him wide awake.
Instead of the usual brown checkered tie and pants, he saw a grey-blue coloured tie and pants. At first he thought these were from his Goguryeo Middle School uniform, but still different. Confused, Cheol looks around the room for his usual uniform until he sees the calendar. The calendar which was supposed to show the year 1999 now showed the year 2000. Cheol lifted it up in confusion and shock over how this could be, and then saw that his study table had books meant for high school students. He also came to realise that he was even taller than now.
All of this was making Cheol freak out, but before he could do anything, his mother called out to him "Cheol, what are you doing? You will get late for school!" This returned Cheol to his senses, and he collected his mind together. No matter what was happening, school was still important. So he gathered his books and quietly ate his
breakfast. He noticed that his family looked the same, but they also seemed to have aged a little. Especially Hwani, who was visibly taller than Miae now.
Right - Miae, what about her? If he was a high schooler, wouldn't she also be one? And why was he still here in the city when he was trying to go to the countryside?
While Cheol was lost in his thoughts, a certain girl came near him and loudly said "Good morning Cheol-ah!" Kim Cheol was once again brought to reality, but with a harsher jerk this time. He looked at Miae, annoyed as he thought that she was still the same. But as he turned to look at her, he froze- the Hwang Miae in front of him was much taller, but still not as much as Hwani, and her hair now reached mid back. She also had a more mature aura to her.
Cheol kept staring at her until Miae asked "Cheol-ah?" making him flinch. Cheol quickly turned away to hide his embarrassment from staring at her for so long and said a short "Nothing." He proceeds to walk ahead, but suddenly feels a strong tug from behind him- it was none other than Miae, who had pulled his backpack. Cheol looks at her in confusion to see her looking upset. "What was up with that answer? And where's my greeting?"
"What? Why do you care?" Cheol asks, still confused. But there was another thing confusing him. Why was Miae being so familiar and close to him, even calling him Cheol-ah? He had been doing his best to ignore it but she didn't seem to stop calling him that.
Miae looks at him surprised, the upset still visible on her face as she answers "Why? Because we are dating that's why!" Cheol stares at her again at this, but with a look of disbelief. "Can you say that again?" Cheol asked Miae, very calmly. Miae looked at him even more surprised and answered "I said that we are dating- a.k.a. I am your girlfriend, and you are my boyfriend. Why are you asking me this? Did you eat something weird yesterday?"
Cheol does not say anymore after this, and stares into space stunned. Dating? Him and Miae? What was she talking about, had she lost her mind? But he was all of a sudden 1 year in the future, so maybe it could be true- no. He had definitely lost his mind. How could he have suddenly become a high schooler and that too dating Miae? This was not right!
Cheol just stood there thinking of all this on the inside, while showing an utterly confused and shocked face on the outside. His train of thoughts were interrupted by Miae, as she tugged his sleeve. "Come on, will you keep standing over here? We are getting late for school, let's go!" And so saying she started walking ahead. Cheol shook his head and decided to go along with this and followed after her.
He felt thankful that Miae was here, since he didn't know where their high school was, but the walk there was very uncomfortable since Miae stayed quiet. She also kept a not-very-obvious-but-still-obvious distance from him, which was starting to make him uncomfortable. Even after they reached school and to their class and sat next to each other - yes they were deskmates even now - Miae kept to herself. Even though Miae was not showing it as much as she did in middle school, Cheol could tell that Miae was sulking. She would occasionally glance at him and when he turned to her, she would simply smile and continue with her own work.
But there were more things bothering Cheol as well - everyone, even the teachers, treated him and Miae like a couple. And to make matters worse, they could sense the awkward atmosphere between them. Due to this, Miae's friends occasionally asked them if everything was alright. Even Jungwook and Honggyu, who seemed to be in the same class as them. The other classmates even seemed to be looking at them with pity and worry, making Cheol feel very uncomfortable.
But what affected him the most was how Miae smiled as she answered their queries with "Nothing's going on!" Her smile was bright as usual, but it was not the usual bright one he saw. It was more like she was just putting it on to appease others. Her laughs also sounded different from usual.
Cheol didn't like this. If she wanted him to be a 'boyfriend', then he will. So once the lunch break began and Miae's friends arrived to have lunch with her, Cheol took the initiative to ask her to have lunch with him instead.
Cheol does his best to avoid showing his discomfort but still stiffens. Miae looks a little stunned at first but then smiles "Okay!" and turns to her friends to apologize. Seeing Miae smile excitedly on their way to have lunch together calms his heart a little and he relaxes.
They go to have lunch in an empty classroom, as they did not want to attract attention. However Cheol still cannot stop feeling awkward that it is just the two of them. He begins remembering other times when it was just the two of them and remembers their time in the countryside and the many moments they had in middle school. It felt very strange, how they were then and how they are dating now - putting aside the fact that this suddenly happened out of nowhere for him. He looks at Miae, who is focussed on eating her lunch. Her bangs were covering her eyes since she was looking down, and some of the strands of her long hair were over her shoulder - he still could not get used to her long hair, maybe that was why he kept looking at her?
Just then, a strong gust of wind blew from the window, making Miae's hair fly right into her face and eyes. Miae let out an "AACK!" as she tried to move her hair from her face, but in vain. Cheol looked at her with a deadpan face, and then proceeded to help her with a sigh.
No matter how much time passes, Miae will remain clumsy forever. As he realises this, Cheol lets out a chuckle. He then sees Miae stare at him, and stops. Did she hear him? He had asked her to have lunch with him to make amends, but if he laughs, won't that make her upset? After all this time spent together he only ruined it in the end…
But instead of an angry outburst, Cheol hears laughter from Miae. She keeps laughing until she has tears on her face, and her hands on her stomach. Cheol starts getting worried and wonders if this is really alright, until Miae finally says "You seem less tense now. I am so glad!"
"Huh?" Cheol looks at Miae with more confusion, "What are you saying?"
"Well, you were looking very uncomfortable this morning when I came up to greet you. But you seemed to have become even more uncomfortable after I came. I can't remember if I did anything, but it seemed like you weren't happy because of me. But hearing you laugh makes me feel better. You don't seem to be that uncomfortable anymore. I am glad." And so saying, she makes a very loving smile to Cheol.
The smile was once again different from the smile that middle school Miae always gave Cheol, yet it affected his heart so much. He felt a sense of accomplishment and some giddiness, as smiled back too. "You are so silly."
Suddenly, Cheol realises that one of his hands was grabbing Miae's shoulder, while the other was almost touching her face as he was helping Miae move her hair from her face. Cheol turns red and is about to pull away, but fails as Miae has a strong hold on his shoulders. This annoys him and he lifts his face to see Miae only to see that they were very close. 'When did this happen?' He wonders.
Then Cheol saw her green eyes, which reflected back Cheol looking at Miae. He felt one of Miae's hands move from his right shoulder to his right cheek. She started caressing his scar with it. This made him flinch a bit, but it was somehow very comforting so he relaxed. Cheol lifts one of his hands which were on the ground, and moves a few strands of hair from Miae's face while continuing to keep his eyes on Miae's. Before he realises it, the distance between them starts decreasing. Cheol feels his heart beat faster, and their noses are about to touch-
"Wake up!" Cheol is startled as he hears an unexpected voice. "Wake up already Kim Cheol!" Cheol then opens his eyes to see that he was in his room, and his elder sister Kim Sunjeong was looking at him annoyed. "Ha! So you finally woke up. Now get off your bed and get ready or you'll be late for school."
Cheol sat there, looking around confused and dazed. What was Sunjeong saying, he was with Miae just now and that too at school! So why was he back in his room? His eyes then fell on this uniform, which were the brown checkered pants and tie he was familiar with. He got off his bed and went to his study table and saw the middle school books and entrance exam prep books he remembered studying from the night before. Things finally began to get clearer as he realised that what he had just seen - him being a high schooler, his family and Miae being older - they were all a dream!
Upon realising this, Cheol stares into space, feeling soulless and relieved that he had finally returned to his familiar environment. Looking at her brother like this, Sunjeong asks "What's the matter with you? You are behaving so weird all of a sudden, you never sleep in and would never dare to be late to school. Yet you are standing there and gaping at the ceiling.
"Wait, were you having a good dream? You were smiling and all, so it must have been a very good one right?" Sunjeong says with a smirk, and Cheol glares at her, red faced. But instead of yelling like usual, he just pushes her out of his room, saying "I need to change, so get out." and shuts the door behind her. Sunjeong looks at the door, amazed at what she had just seen. Her face then breaks into a smile and leaves for college with an "Alright~"
Cheol quickly gets ready, eats his breakfast and leaves his house without another word. He did not want to let his family see his face, which was still red from remembering the dream he had had. He couldn't believe that he really dreamt of being a highschooler dating Hwang Miae. Why would he do that?
He tries to walk quickly but unfortunately (?) comes across Miae. She sees Cheol and greets him with a beam "Good morning Kim Cheol!"
Miae looks at him excited, and Cheol looks at her quietly. He notices how the smile was similar to the one he had seen in the dream. 'How cute.' he thinks to himself, and his face breaks into a smile. Miae who sees this smile, stops smiling and stares at Cheol amazed.
However Cheol's smile does not last for long, as he realises what he had just thought of. He quickly turns away from Miae and runs off ahead in the direction of their school. Miae looks confused at his back and chases after him "Huh, Cheol - no, Kim Cheol? Wait for me!"
However, Cheol does not slow down as he does not want to face Miae right now. Why? Because back there Cheol had a small thought - 'How nice would it be if that dream were to be real.' His face was red from embarrassment - he had to stay away from Hwang Miae or he would explode!
And so Cheol continued to maintain a distance from Miae for a few more days, until he finally calmed down and returned back to normal. Miae was relieved, but still tried to ask him about that day, to which Cheol simply said that will stop talking to her if she asked further, shutting her up.
Bonus:
Despite the short encounter and Cheol running off with Miae chasing after him, Cheol and Miae reached school on time. Cheol, however, was still avoiding Miae, much to her annoyance and confusion.
Cheol was now trying to pay attention to his teacher, but he kept remembering bits from his dream and their earlier encounter, and would become embarrassed every now and then. Suddenly a thought occurred to him - how could he understand his classes in the dream? Weren't they for highschoolers? Yet he seemed to understand them well.
He then remembered the teacher, who looked a little too similar to Cheol, saying "Hwang Miae looks very beautiful with her long hair. However, her short hair from when she was in middle school was very good too! And her face seems to be more mature, and her round green eyes are as beautiful as ever - "
Cheol immediately stood up from his seat and told the teacher present that he had to go to the restroom and dashed out of the classroom before his teacher could answer. He didn't care anymore if the teacher scolded him. He could not be in that classroom anymore, especially around Hwang Miae anymore!
