"Shit, shit, shit!" He could hear the faint swearing just as a small brunette ducked underneath the obvious divider between bar and club.
Sebastian rolled his eyes, ready to kick him back out when suddenly the male's hands attached to his pant legs. "Oi!" Sebastian started. He wasn't British but the word seemed like the perfect fit for the moment and action.
"Sorry!" The voice was now far more of a breath than it had been before. "Just please let me hide here for a moment!"
Ire irked Sebastian's brow up but for this particular moment, not at the male by his legs. "Someone harassing you?" He scanned the club, knowing that he'd kick whoever that was out of club, not just behind the bar. This was a safe haven.
"No!" The male had moved away from Sebastian's legs and was aiming toward the bar, trying to peek above it but not having much luck while trying to remain unseen at the same time. "Not in that way." He clarified. "I'm trying to avoid someone. This bloody town of 100 people and I was foolish enough to believe he wouldn't be here!" There was definitely a whine to that voice now.
Sebastian had long ago figured out who the boy was behind the voice, but he was just playing along. "Not good enough of a reason to be behind my bar." Sebastian said. "Come on, out you go."
"Hold on, please, just one second. I just need to time my escape, I'll be no bother. Do you see a black curly haired guy here?"
"You mean Blaine Anderson? Why are you hiding from him?" His voice was loud enough to catch said boy's attention who turned and grinned when seeing Sebastian. He left his newly secured table to come over and talk with Sebastian. It would take a moment for him to arrive, just as Sebastian had planned.
"You know-" He finally looked up and saw Sebastian's amused green eyes looking down at him and he cursed again. "Of a town of 100, it had to be you!" He cried in distress, clearly thinking this was the worst outcome possible. "Of course it was you!"
"You finally found your proper place." Sebastian wiggled a brow at Kurt on his knees and his head near Sebastian's crotch.
Kurt moved back with a disgusted groan, not realizing how close he'd gotten to Sebastian. "Why are you even here? It's a tiny town of only-"
"100 people, yes I know." Sebastian rolled his eyes, taking pleasure in the moment. Kurt was clearly in distress and he was bemoaning his particular luck. "There's more than that in this town." Sebastian pointed out. "There's a college here, I was hoping to find some desperate lonely collegiate. Seems I wasn't alone in that pursuit."
"But you're behind the bar? Besides, there's better clubs, in bigger towns, other colleges." Although the fact that this particular college was in the middle of nowhere was the point, it was far lonelier than a bigger city, fewer options and all had to collect in 1 of two places, here or at the school.
Sebastian opened his mouth to answer with snark when Blaine arrived. "Sebastian!" Blaine greeted loudly and between him and the club's volume, overrode Kurt's eep and ducking down lower onto the sticky floor by Sebastian's feet. Oh, Kurt really had to be in some serious distress if he'd prefer to ruin his clothes in this way over facing Blaine.
What had Blaine done? Maybe it was Kurt? Sebastian was going to stick his nose right into the middle of it.
Sebastian reached across the bar to do the Dalton handshake and Kurt watched on in annoyance. They'd never taught him that and no how much needling and practice he'd done in the mirror, he'd never gotten it down. Besides, you'd have to know the other person attended Dalton to even begin to do it and none of the ones he ran into who knew or he knew started it. He'd attended Dalton, but he'd never been one of them. It was a different form of bullying, but it made it so much clearer than the insults at McKinley had ever done. He was apart, separate, and he did not belong anywhere, especially at an elite school with their special handshake or with their golden child. It had taken him awhile but he'd finally admitted it to himself in earnest.
"Blaine." Sebastian greeted again. "What brings you here?"
"Meeting up with my boyfriend, it was a central location." Blaine answered with a wide grin.
"Why not just meet at Twinkle-toes' house?" Sebastian asked, Kurt rolled his eyes and Blaine lifted both brows in confusion. "What?"
"I don't think Dave would take kindly to that, even if he's mellowed out." Blaine answered Sebastian's question.
"Dave? As in Karofsky? The bear-cub?" Sebastian asked, wondering about this particular development. "What happened to Hummel?"
"Oh, you didn't hear? We broke up." Blaine gave a small shrug. "I thought it was through the entire gossip chain already."
Sebastian had kind of taken himself out of the gossip chain once he graduated Dalton. "Last I heard, you were getting married to Hummel." He admitted, he'd been at the ask, afterall, had helped set it up.
Blaine scowled. "Yeah, well, I guess I wanted it more than him. You haven't seen him around town, have you? He's supposed to be back this week."
A cocky grin crossed Sebastian's features as he leaned forward against the bar, appearing conspiratorial. "If you'd only look down, you may find him."
Kurt pinched him warningly, he would do harm if Sebastian wasn't careful. Sebastian not so gently kicked him away but without any force and only with the side of his shoe.
"Is that a joke? Are you making fun of my height?" Blaine demanded despite the shark smile Sebastian was displaying, the same one he'd done whenever they flirted in the past. Kurt dug his elbow into Sebastian's foot and Sebastian tried to move him away again. Blaine had a new boyfriend where he could try to take him from, apparently and that was more important, or so Kurt thought. Sebastian had nearly given him away and Blaine could only make it about himself. "You never made fun of me in the past. Santana, Rachel, a lot of the Glee kids actually and especially Kurt, but never me. Why is that, actually?"
"I don't insult my interests unless that's their particular preference of flirting. It makes it harder to get the guy to do things with me, you know?" Sebastian asked, swinging his leg around and trapping Kurt between his legs and trying to hold him in place and to stop bothering him if he couldn't do it on his own. Kurt struggled and wiggled, but Sebastian had a good hold on him.
"Hmm." Blaine didn't know what to say for a moment then he shrugged. "I prefer praise, you're right. Snark is only funny up to a point, then it gets old."
"Oh, it never gets old." Sebastian countered. "Especially with a good bantering partner, it's incredibly fun and an incredible turn on."
"Then I'm surprised you never slept with Santana or Kurt, they held their grounds."
"Santana was a girl and the twink was too soft. He only snarked in defense of something, not for the thrill of the hunt. He would default back into passive and sweet when the threat was gone. Or apparently hide away if the challenge appeared too big." The derision in Sebastian's tone was impossible to miss even over the sound of the music. Kurt deflated and stopped trying to fight. Why was Sebastian not just straight out telling Blaine he was there then, if that's how he felt? "Yeah, he gives up quickly too." Sebastian squeezed his leg around Kurt again, had he been enjoying trying to keep a straight face and unmoving upper body while below the bar there was a struggle?
"You should stop calling him names. I never said anything when we dated when we were kids, I was too polite and should have stuck up for him, but I guess... I was frustrated too and wanted you to rile him up so he'd come to me. He didn't deserve it then and he doesn't need it now."
Sebastian scoffed. "He's got tough skin, even if he gives up easily."
"He's got a soft underbelly." Blaine sighed. "I know, I hit that one far too many times." The tension in Sebastian's body then was unmistakable, even to Blaine. "Not literally, of course!" Blaine held up his hands in self-defense. "I just mean, I screwed up too many times to count, forgetting that he was soft inside and that hard shell was just brittle."
"What are you talking about?" Sebastian asked, his tone deceptively hiding the deadly undertone.
"You need to stop kicking him when he's down. If you run into him, promise me you won't."
"You don't say? How ironic." Sebastian mused humorously and got another pinch in return for his words. So Kurt did have some fire still simmering then and Sebastian nudged him again with his foot.
"I made a lot of mistakes and didn't help him much when he was down, I'm afraid. Did you know he only went to Dalton because bullying got too bad, to the point his life was threatened, after his dad had a heart attack and now he's back to sit with his dad during a cancer check after months of treatment. Of course, you'd also heard about Finn..." Blaine sighed. "Poor guy. I was hoping to lend my support to Kurt too."
"But you're here with the gorilla-bear."
"He's here?" Blaine glanced around but Karofsky was not in sight and Blaine sagged with disappointment.
"I meant, figuratively, not literally." Sebastian refrained from rolling his eyes this time. "You want to go support Kurt while you're dating someone else?"
"Dave's been really nice to me and is incredibly supportive of me and my goals." Blaine defended.
"I wonder who's supporting whom." Sebastian grabbed a glass and started to fill it with a beer he knew Blaine would like. He was ready for this conversation to end, he had questions but had a better source to question.
"He's changed! He's not that bully who terrorized Kurt into leaving McKinley anymore. He's wised up and grown up and stopped pursuing the wrong things." Blaine defended.
"Yeah, after Kurt turned Karofsky down repeatedly." Blaine might have missed Sebastian not using an offensive nickname with Kurt, but Kurt hadn't. He settled against one of Sebastian's legs to wait this out. "Once, while you were in the hospital."
"After you threw a slushy at Kurt which happened to blind me." Blaine was getting hot under the collar and arguing with Sebastian. "Yet we remained friends. People do change, you know? Have you not changed from the boy you were when you first arrived in Ohio?"
"You know I have. I've worked hard on it." Though the way he'd acted with Kurt might not have appeared that way. "Did you say Kurt had death threats at McKinley? As in more than one?"
"Yeah..." Blaine looked away, pretending to look around the room for Dave again but trying to avoid Sebastian's eyes and the follow up question he was sure to follow. "Look, it's been great catching up, but I should probably reclaim my table before I lose it." He pulled out a few bills and put it on the table, more than enough to cover the beer and reached for it.
Sebastian trapped his hand against the bar and leaned even closer to Blaine. "Who threatened him?" This time, Blaine couldn't miss the dangerous edge to Sebastian's eyes and sneer.
"Doesn't matter, they're friends now."
"Friends?" Sebastian asked carefully. "Or had they just come to a mutual, polite understanding? To smooth things over?" It rang hollow for everyone involved because they knew that was exactly what Sebastian had done with Kurt, just to keep the peace that was very close to being disrupted forever. It nearly fell into chaos after Blaine's blinding and then Karofsky's suicide attempt.
Sebastian had taken on the full responsibility and Kurt had let it slide. He could well imagine Kurt letting a death threat or more from the same guy slide too. None of it was ok, even if they came to their senses and had personal regret. They should have been held accountable legally too.
Kurt had just not wanted that drama anymore. Probably had never wanted it to start with. He didn't want to drag it out or suffer anymore consequences for being nothing other than himself. To hold out, would have been only more pain. Sebastian had played a big part in that. His inner self was frowning hard now. This had not been what he had been wanting to hear when he came to work today. This threatened to undo a lot of progress that he'd thought he'd made for himself.
"How did you contribute to it?" Sebastian finally found himself asking. He wondered if Blaine belonged on that list of people that Kurt had forgiven without drawing blood from first.
Blaine shrugged again, glad they were no longer talking about his relationship with Karofsky but somewhat uncomfortable by the change in topic. "I was no worse than his so-called McKinley friends." Blaine sighed heavily. "Forget it, Sebastian. I find myself still oddly protective over my ex-boyfriend even if I had been right there with the others. I don't want to give you any more arsenal to use against them." Blaine didn't even catch his mistake in pronoun, he just grabbed his beer and went back to his table. It was still early, he shouldn't have to worry about it, what with it being a town of 100 and all.
Sebastian only had more questions. Kurt was released and started to make his way back to the folding ledge when Sebastian reached down and held his shoulder. "No, I'll take you to the employee lounge and help you out the backdoor."
"Really?" Kurt glanced at him in surprise and Sebastian nodded. He got into position to shield Kurt and then guided him to the back room. Once in there, it was a clear path to the exit and Kurt knew he should just head out before Sebastian changed his mind.
It had been a very telling evening for both of them.
Still, Kurt hesitated. "Why are yo-" Sebastian's arms wrapping around him and giving him a firm hug cut off his words. "Sebastian?"
"Sorry, you seem like someone who hasn't been given nearly enough positive physical contact." Sebastian let him go and took a step back.
"Well it's still better than an unwanted sprung upon kiss or being groped in the parking lot." Kurt joked and for a second had forgotten that Blaine hadn't spilled those particular secrets when he deemed it wise to tell Sebastian the rest of his business. Sebastian's actions had unlocked that part in his brain.
"What?" Sebastian took a step forward but stopped when Kurt took a step back. "I don't allow that kind of behavior around here. Who is responsible for that?"
"You don't allow it?" Kurt questioned challenging. "Why would anyone listen to you?"
Sebastian huffed and waved at the place. "I took over ownership of the bar. Surely you've seen a change in not only clientele but the overall environment?" Kurt had noticed but he hadn't realized that it was Sebastian's doing, who would have known that? How could he have known that?
"Why'd you take over a bar?"
"Club, and it's because of my past behavior. I wanted to make a safe place for people like us to gather. I wanted to nip people like me in the bud and teach them a better way to be." Sebastian rolled his head on his shoulders. "I knew I wouldn't be able to curb all bad behavior, but I thought I had at least protected people from assault. No wonder you came in today, you most likely needed a stiff drink and then Anderson ruined it all. Tell me, who broke my rules?"
"It was before you owned the place." Kurt answered honestly. "Nothing you could have done about either of the situations. One wasn't even here." Kurt gave a small shrug and wondered what on Earth he was still doing there, talking to Sebastian Smythe of all people. "I'm surprised he didn't mention my hospitalization since he's so fond of spilling all my secrets." He was bitter sounding and Sebastian didn't point out that Kurt was releasing secrets Blaine hadn't. Though he had a feeling the ones Kurt was mentioning only put Blaine in a bad light, not something Blaine would readily do, even after admitting he'd behaved badly before. Kurt caught Sebastian staring. "What?"
"I'm thinking you need something a lot stronger than a hug."
Kurt made a surprised and slightly offensive face at the suggestion. "Not from you."
"Oh come on Kurt, if not from me then how will we ever know you got a proper one?" Sebastian took steps closer but Kurt had no where to go, his voice pitched lower. "One done right?"
"I've had plenty of kisses, I'm not lacking in that department." Kurt's voice got lower too, more like the curses Sebastian had originally been tricked by. Sebastian feigned surprise as his face got closer to Kurt's. "I know what a good kiss is like."
"Let's put it to the test, huh?" Sebastian gave him plenty of ample time to move away, to say no. Kurt didn't take the opportunity and Sebastian slid his lips across Kurt's. It sparked something in Sebastian he hadn't been expecting, he'd viewed this kiss as an apology and maybe even slightly pitying but as soon as they touched, a fire roared between them. Sebastian had never experienced a kiss like that before. When their lips parted and they panted heavily in each other's space, Sebastian found his voice first. "I apologize, you were right, you do know how to kiss."
Kurt took a moment but then he spoke too. "No, you were right, that was new."
Then they looked at each and grinned, in perfect agreement without having to say a word. Both were up to figuring out what else was new and what they could create between each other. Talking, rehashing old stories, discussion about the present and future could wait. Kurt's fingers found Sebastian's shirt buttons. "Will they miss you at the bar?"
"Nope, it's my bar, remember?" Sebastian pulled away only long enough to lock the door. It's exactly what Sebastian had hoped to cut down on and what Kurt never thought he'd do, but at the moment, neither minded a little bending of rules.
"Hell really did freeze over, didn't it?"
"Wouldn't be surprised to leave here today to find nuclear winter and zombies." Sebastian agreed, pulling Kurt's shirt up and over his head. "The world can burn around us for all I care with how much I burn for you."
"Damn the apocalypse." Kurt tugged Sebastian back to him, sealing their lips together.
