Terrified was an understatement, she could not return home and she could not return to him. Everything had crumbled down for her in a single day after waking up this morning to go to school like she usually does. However, when she woke up and discovered that her stepsister had lied about her stealing her boyfriend and received a beating from her stepmother, she had tried to seek shelter with her boyfriend. But, he and her stepsister go together in secret. He nearly beat her that morning, only to let her know she was dead once school finished. And what was worse, her own father didn't even try to protect her. He believed only her stepmother and stepsister.

And she went to school almost covered in bruises. Only her face and arms were not hit. She didn't know if she should be grateful for that or not, she would rather someone found out and contact the police on her behalf. But, it seemed no one could really help her now. She considered accepting her fate, but that was foolish. She didn't really have much in that home anyway, she had managed to sneak her important documents out and that was all she really needed.

Maybe I should just find somewhere to work and get an apartment.

She was seventeen and it was her last year of high school. She figured she could wait it out. Her stepsister didn't go to the public school, she went to private like her ex boyfriend did. Maybe that was how they met, she wasn't sure.

It was the end of the school day, but she was in no hurry to leave. She took her time gathering her things from her locker, she checked the time and decided that she would have time to deliver resumes to a few places. She walked to the bathrooms to use quickly and take the time to tie her hair back into a neat ponytail. She looked at her clothes and sighed, they weren't in the best shape. She was wearing a plain, white t-shirt, a red jacket with holes and tears in it, and a pair of jeans that were thin and not warm to wear. Her shoes had also seen much better days, but at least they stop her from stepping on anything sharp. Well, sharp rocks, she couldn't count on her shoes stopping a nail from digging through the sole of her shoes.

She finally walked out of the school, glancing around and seeing that the front of the building was practically empty. She breathed out a sigh of relief, she could get away unseen. She was good at staying invisible, she didn't have any friends to talk to anymore. They stopped being her friends in the last year, apparently their families had gotten some good jobs and she was no longer worth their time because she was not rich. She wasn't going to complain though, she felt it was better to not have any connections now. Especially since she needed to survive on her own from now on if she wanted to avoid her ex and family.

She walked along the path towards the centre of town, clutching her bag tightly to herself as she was nervous about how the day would go. Her name is Saphira, she lost her mother when she was five and her father quickly remarried to her stepmom six months after her passing. Her stepmother already had her stepsister, who is a year younger than her, and it became quickly apparent that her stepmother hated her. Mostly because she resembled her mother a lot. Her mother had thick, velvet, black hair, just like her own hair, smooth, moon pale skin and bright, green eyes. Saphira inherited a lot of her mother's features, her skin and hair matched her mother, while her eyes were a deeper green than her mother's eyes. She only resembled her father in some facial features, such as the shape of her eyes, ears and chin, everything else she mostly got from her mother. Saphira had always assumed her stepmother and stepsister were jealous. They were blonde with blue eyes, but Saphira was the apple of her father's eye. At least…until she was ten. Then things changed for the worst.

Saphira somewhat felt that what happened that morning was a blessing. Her stepmother practically told her to leave and never return, and her ex-boyfriend threatened her life, so leaving them was a blessing. She could now live without the constant nightmare she lived daily at the hands of her family. She arrived in town and began going to different retail stores and fast-food places, handing in her resume and explaining how much she was willing to work. She went to a couple cafes and restaurants she knew were open late in the afternoons and night, so she hoped she would get something.

It was late afternoon when she approached the last fast-food restaurant. She glanced up at the sky, the sun was setting pretty low right now. She had to give this last resume to the manager before it go too dark so she could go find a place to sleep. She grimaced a little as her stomach growled at her. She didn't have much money to buy food, she had to ration it until she could get a job. Plus, she got the free lunch at school, so she would survive just fine. That is what she told herself, she just hoped that her family or ex don't find her again, that was the last thing she needed.

She hummed a little and gasped, jumping back a little when a purple, motorcycle rolled into the parking lot of KO Burgers without waiting for her. She frowned a little and rolled her eyes. "People are so rude…" She shakes her head and walked along the sidewalk before turning to approach the entrance of the building. Though as she did so, at the corner of her eye the woman on the bike seemed to suddenly disappear. She looked at the bike with wide eyes and rubbed them. "Pfft…I must have been dreaming."

She eyed the bike suspiciously and turned her head to look at the door, only to bump into someone, causing her to fall onto her backside which made her yelp in pain. "Oof! Oh!" She shakes her head and saw a young man with brown eyes and short, black hair looking back at her with wide eyes. "I am so sorry, I was not looking where I was going." He reached his hand out to her and she takes it, allowing him to help her up. "Are you hurt? You didn't drop anything did you?"

"I am fine." She brushed down her jacket and jeans with a sigh. "I am just handing a resume in here. I need a job." She looked at the kid with a slight smile. "I also was not watching where I was going."

"Oh? You want to work here?" The boy asked and smiled at her. "Well, I happen to work here. I could maybe put in a good word for you. My name's Jack, Jack Darby."

"Nice to meet you Jack, and that would be lovely. Just…don't tell your boss right now. You can tell him tomorrow." Saphira walked around the boy to get to the door. "I'm Saphira Dawn, by the way."

"Saphira…I've heard that name…you're in the senior class above me, aren't you?" Jack asked with a big grin.

She blinked and raised an eyebrow at him. "How do you know that?"

"It's pretty hard to not recognize you, I hear so many girls whisper about how jealous they are of you. I don't know why girls have to be jealous of other girls, it is so lame." Jack shrugged and pulled out his flip phone. "Sorry for making it awkward. I need to call my mom to let her know I am off work. She worries, you know."

I wish I did know.

"Alright. I won't stop you." Saphira pushed the door open into the restaurant to put her resume down.

It hurt whenever someone else would say their mom or dad was worried about them. She longed to have that again, she envied kids who had a great relationship with their parents. She would have loved her stepmother too if she had not been hostile from the start. But there was nothing that could change how she felt right now. She could only work on living on her own. Even if she never went to college.

After putting her resume in, Saphira made her way back out of the building and she looked up in surprise to see Jack sitting on the bike with a couple girls talking to him. She was going to ask him what he was doing when she was blinded by two sets of headlights. She covered her eyes with her hands and peered through her fingers to see two, purple, modified, sport cars revving their engines aggressively. They speed towards them and Saphira ran from the door to hide, just as she did so, the bike revs and suddenly lifts up, spinning around with Jack panicking loudly.

"What the…" Saphira muttered as she stared in disbelief as the bike speeds towards the two cars, keeping the wheelie going as it speeds between the two cars. "That wasn't…normal…"

She raised an eyebrow and watched the bike speed down the road with Jack, and the two sport cars turn around to chase them. Saphira watched in disbelief at what she was seeing and rubbed her eyes, wanting to think she just had a hallucination. She could not see or hear the vehicles, she took deep breaths to calm her racing heart and she walked away from the restaurant. She looked both ways, up and down the street for any signs of unusual cars or bikes on the road. So far, there was nothing. She guessed she was just dreaming, she would ask Jack about it later.

She made her way to the side of town that was mostly full of garages. People rented these for extra storage, and it was often the quietest part of town. It was the best place she could go to that was close to the places in the centre of town, and school. Saphira walked into an alleyway, looking around for somewhere that was relatively safe and warm. As she looked around, she noticed fresh tracks on the ground. She widened her eyes and realized that those vehicles had come this way. She hoped they were long gone. It took sometime, but she found a place shelter by three buildings, there was some pine pallets that had been dumped here, along with some cardboard and aluminium. She smiled, she could make a simple shelter out of this. She got to work moving the pallets to stand upright and make sure they were stable before placing the aluminium sheets on top. She at least would be out of the rain if it ever rained on her while sleeping. She spread out the cardboard and she smiled a little, it wasn't what she wanted, but it was a start.

She looked around for any potential sleeping bags that had been thrown out, it was her best bet of staying warm for the night. She walked around for a couple hours, and the sun finally went down, and it was clear she would not find a sleeping bag. She made her way to her shack that she built, she made sure no one saw her as she crouched and crawled into the small space. The air was cold and she didn't have anything but her ragged clothes to keep her semi-warm. She curled her body and shivered, she knew the night was going to be pretty long and cold, she had seen the weather channel earlier that week. What a time to be kicked out. All she could do now is to look ahead, she would find somewhere to recharge her phone to ensure she would be contacted by the employers if they decide to take her on. Even though she got plenty of judgemental expressions from the managers, she was sure one would take her on. She was counting on it.
