Rain was pouring down, 'how fitting' Logan thought. Looking down he saw his two daughters and saw them starting to shiver and hugging him closer, 'I have to do this: for them',
"Daddy," the youngest whispered, hugging his leg tighter, "I'm scared."
Bending down he brought both of them closer to him, giving them a proper hug, "I know darling, I'm sorry that this has to be the way." Turning his head to his eldest he lowered his head, "But it's for the best. Please, look after each other." Looking into his eldest eyes, "This isn't what I wanted, I would fight to my very last breath for you girls."
Reaching out to touch her father's face, the eldest child whispered, "Will we ever see you again?" tears forming in her eyes.
With a moment of silence, Logan gave a sigh, "I can only hope." 'Please, God, Allah, Buddha, whoever is out there; don't let them be like me. Keep them safe, and mutation free', "And if that day comes, I will be there to protect you." 'And I pray you won't hate me'
Lightening flashed the sky as the sound of thunder roared, "Please daddy, don't go!" the youngest cried, not wanting her father to leave her, "We need you." Tears pouring out of her eyes
'I'm sorry', "I'm sorry kitten." Turning to his eldest he tried his best to sound strong, "Anna, look after your sister, stay close and protect each other." All Anna could do was nod her head as her tears fell out of her eyes, "Kitty, listen to your sister, and I know it'll be hard, but I'm doing what is best for you, both." Hugging close, Logan reached into his pocket, and took out two golden pendants, placing them on his daughters, "To remember me." How badly he wanted to say more but couldn't, for he was ready to cry himself, so he opted to hug them one last time, "Now knock on the door, Anna, you know what to say?" Anna nodded her head, wiping her tears away, "I love you both." Letting them go, he stood up.
Anna reached out the hold Kitty's hand, and together they walked to a house. Reaching up, Anna knocked on the door, it didn't take long before a porch light turned on. Logan watched from a distance, hidden by the rain. There, he saw a lady and Anna talking. His heart broke as he saw both his daughters cry harder which caused the lady to give them a hug and bring them in. Once the door closed, Logan walked away, unbothered by the rain, "I'm sorry." When he made it to a clearing, away from anyone, he let out a loud howl, for his heart was broken, and as much as he hoped he could see them again, he also hoped just as much he never did; for that would mean they would have an x-gene and he wouldn't be there to help them along the way.
11 years later
Rouge woke up with a fright, sweat pouring down her face, "Not again" she whispered to herself. It was always the same dream, the people were blurry but she remembers a fight between two men and a little girl crying. The little girl she remembers as her sister, but heaven forbid she remembers who the two men were. All she can remember was one brought her comfort and the other was mixed, on the one hand he cared but also didn't care.
Turning her head to her bedside table she saw one of her treasured items. A picture taken ten years ago of her and her sister, 'I wonder if she remembers me.' Her hand lifted up to touch her necklace, her second treasured item, "I'm sorry I couldn't keep us together."
She remembered that day, how greatly it affected her. It was Katherine's 5th birthday. Kitty was so happy and the orphanage at the time took great care of them. The look of her face when they walked out to the dinning room where balloons were floating around, streamers everywhere and a cake in the center of the table. "Happy birthday Katherine!" all the children and adults yelled out. When Kitty went to her cake the adults told her to smile at the camera and one of them moved Anna so they could be in the picture together. It was the best day to begin with.
However, as Kitty was having fun, showing Anna her presents and running around having the time of her life. Anna was near the doorway watching, but then overheard some of the adults talking, "It can't be… we all know they have to leave together, they have been through enough."
"I know," another voice replied, "I tried to convince them that they need to be together, but they wouldn't listen. They said they all agreed that it is better for one to be adopted than both staying here forever. Rubbish I say! They just don't want to listen to us."
A sigh came from one of the other adults, "Poor Anna."
Hearing her name, Anna tried to hear more, but the kids all decided then to start being louder and screaming with joy, 'No! we can't be separated! Dad said…'
Time went on during the day, Kitty stuck by her sister and showed off her new dragon plushie deciding on the name Lockheed, a present that the workers helped Anna pay for. Everything was going so well and perfectly; and then it happened
"Katherine, you are required to the office." A tall lady dressed in a black suit said, looking down at the little girl. Though her face showed she had seen many hard times, she still held the presence of understanding, "Your new family is waiting for you."
With sparkling eyes, little Kitty cried out with joy, "Really! Anna and I have a family?" turning to Anna, Kitty grabbed her hand and cheered, "Did you hear that! We have a family!"
Sad eyes clouded the older ladies face as she tried to hide it, "Katherine, please, go to the office. Mrs Jones is waiting for you." Not thinking too much about it, Kitty skipped to the office to see Mrs Jones leaving Anna behind, "I'm sorry Anna, we tried everything we could."
It didn't take long before Kitty's cry made it's way through the building, and the sounds of her footsteps running, finding their way to her beloved sister, "Anna! I don't want to go!"
Closing her eyes, Rouge tried her best to stop remembering everything else that happened that day. Seeing her little sister cry, being carried away, their last hug, the last time she ever saw her again. The day Anna officially ever felt truly alone. 'Why did you have to leave us dad? Why couldn't you leave us something to remember you by… Why did yo-'
"Anna! Time for school!" she heard one of the orphanage women yell out. As time went on Rouge went from different orphanages, new faces came in and left, many children arrived and then got adopted, but never her, never Anna. She was always a quiet little child and how she grow up, she lost sight of who she was, where she came from. So entered her goth 'phase' as the workers told her.
Not wanting to leave just yet Rouge yelled out, "I'm just going to walk today." Standing up from her bed, she made her way to her closet, pulling out her usual outfit. 'I wonder if she remembers me? She was so young. I wouldn't blame her if she can't, I cant even remember what dad looks like anymore.'
Unbeknown to her, today was going to change her life.
