The bulkheads creaked as the ship heaved, breaking the momentary bouts of silence until there was no respite from sound. The inertial dampeners were playing up...again. Every muscle relaxed as she closed her eyes, losing herself in the soft hum of the engines and the subtle crank of oxygen filters. It was bizarrely soothing, a small comfort when surrounded by uncertainty.

This Christmas story is set in 2202, 14 years after the war and well after Shepard's semi-retirement from the Spectres... after all, no one truly retires from being a Spectre. It does contain a couple of spoilers, and deviates somewhat from my standard canon, so read at your own risk. A modified version of this will eventually be rolled into the main storyline.
