Chapter 31

The sun was shining high in the sky on this beautiful blue day. Clouds littered the scenery, and seemed to be growing more frequent as time went on. Although they didn't have a destination in mind, it was simply a nice day to enjoy being a traveling Pokémon Trainer. It was such a good day that Ash had even let his Wartortle out of its Poké Ball, and the three were traveling down the road together.

That was, of course, until Wartortle felt that first raindrop on the top of its head. "Wartor?" Thunder echoed through the field, and they turned around to see dark clouds rolling in from behind.

"A storm?" Ash asked aloud, holding his hands out with his palms up to feel for rain. Sure enough, a few raindrops wet his gloves, and this quickly turned into more, and then more, and then eventually, the sky opened up and rain poured from the sky, soaking the three. With no cover in sight, they ran up the path, using their arms to block their heads from getting any more drenched. "Let's get out of this!" Though they were in the middle of nowhere, they continued to run up the path. But then, a large house caught their eye. Stopping in place, Ash studied it with a curious look. It looked like an extra from an amusement park, or a child's dollhouse castle. It was painted white with red shingles, and a tilted sign on the front read 'IMITE HOUSE'.

"What's that?" Brock questioned. They shared a glance, and Ash's wasn't quite sure if the shivers sent up his spine was from the chill of the rain soaking him to the bone, or the outside appearance of the house. But, he shook it away and drew his eyebrows together.

"Well, this is no time to be picky!" he said, and him and Wartortle rushed forward first, crossing the large lawn and Brock followed his lead. Eventually, they made it to the front doors, and without knocking, they pushed their way inside. Now that they were out of the rain, they had time to breathe, and Ash attempted to catch his breath with his hands on his knees as the rain dripped off them and onto the linoleum floor.

Pulling in a deep breath to regulate his lungs once again, he finally sat up straight and looked around, though there wasn't much to see in the darkness. "Hello! Sorry for barging in!" The light that poured in from inside gave a hint to the large area, and a sign which read the same as the sign outside was hung high above a stage of some kind across the room. The red curtains were closed, which only added to the thought they were both having: it was abandoned.

"It looks like some sort of theater..." Brock observed as they walked further into the main area.

"Hey! Since nobody's around, we might as well stay 'til the rain stops!" Ash suggested with a smile. Brock agreed with a nod, but Wartortle gave an utter that made them both turn around. Strangely enough, Ash realized that it wasn't his Wartortle's cry at all, but it sounded... different. The pair turned around to see Wartortle looking at another Wartortle, but this one's back was facing the pair. "Where'd that other Wartortle come from?" Wartortle seemed confused, and when it flinched back in surprise, the other Wartortle copied it. An amused smile crossed its face, and it posed different poses suddenly. Like a mirror, the other Wartortle copied it perfectly.

"War!"

"That's pretty cool how it can imitate it like that!" Ash commented, and smiled as he approached the pair. But what he saw when he looked at the other Wartortle's face made him cry out with shock as he was taken aback.

"What is it?" Brock questioned, and Ash pointed at the Wartortle. The 'Wartortle' looked up at Brock, and instead of its large eyes, it had beady black eyes and a wide grin that stretched across its featureless face.

"Wartortle!" it said to them, but it was almost as if someone was speeding up a Wartortle's cry on a voice recorder.

"Could be a new kind of Wartortle..." Brock muttered, his finger and thumb curling around his chin in thought.

"A new kind?" Ash parroted, and a look of excitement crossed his face. "All right! Then I'll just have to capture it! Wartortle, Water Gun!" Wartortle's brow lowered into a smirk mimicking its Trainer, and the Water-type jumped into the air before pulling in a breath and blasting out a stream of water from its mouth at the strange-looking Wartortle. Following its usual pattern, the Wartortle shot out a Water Gun as well, and both attacks collided in the air, canceling each other out. But while it was distracted, Ash retrieved an empty Poké Ball and threw it forward. "Go, Poké Ball!" The ball flew through the air at Wartortle, but then something else flew from the sidelines and collided with it. It was another Poké Ball. With both of their trajectories ruined, the red and white capture devices fell to the ground uselessly.

"H-hey!" Ash exclaimed, looking angrily in the direction that the Poké Ball was thrown. But, much to his surprise, the kid standing in the corner was dressed... exactly like Ash. "Huh?! Hey, that guy is dressed like me!"

"Hmm, except it's a girl..." Brock murmured, which prompted Ash to double-take at the Pokémon Trainer.

"How can you tell?"

"Men's intuition."

Ignoring Brock, Ash stepped forward. "Who are you?"

"Tell me who you are!" the girl responded, but she sounded exactly like Ash.

"I'm Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town!" he answered, jabbing a thumb in his direction.

"Duplica," the Ash-imposter answered, and then suddenly their voice changed to a young girl's as she looked up and stepped into the light, revealing that she had turquoise hair instead of Ash's black locks. "From the House of Imite."

"Imite? Like imitate? Is that why you look just like me?"

"That's right!" Duplica giggled, and as she walked over to the weird Wartortle, Brock gave a hum in thought.

"She may be a little young for me..." Ash ignored him once again and watched as Duplica gave the Wartortle a pitying look.

"Aw, it still hasn't gotten over that old habit." Ash opened his mouth to ask her to explain further, but just then, the Wartortle's body began to glow a bright pearl color, and soon it changed form completely as if it were evolving. But instead of getting bigger, it grew smaller, and when the glow faded, a pink Pokémon that looked like a living blob of goo smiled up at them.

"Ditto!" it squeaked, and Ash and Brock both gasped while the former took out his Pokédex and scanned the new Pokémon.

"Ditto, a Transform Pokémon. It is able to rearrange the cells of its body and assume any form. Its only attack is Transform."

"And Ditto can make itself look just like anything!" Ash commented excitedly as he put his Pokédex back in his jacket pocket.

"Hmm, yeah," Brock agreed quietly, though he still rubbed his chin. "But its face stayed the same." He looked at Duplica and continued. "When it transforms, shouldn't it be able to change completely?"

"Yeah, it still can't change its face," she replied sadly.

"But it's the only Pokémon that can transform like that, right?" Ash asked her, perking the girl right up. "Or, are there others?"

"Nope! Ditto's one of a kind!"

"A transforming Pokémon... Its only attack is to copy other Pokémon; that's all it does." This seemed to spark a curiosity in Brock's mind as the Pokémon Breeder looked down at the little Ditto.

"Yeah, but..." Ash began with a frown, crossing his arms as he continued. "You can't have the fun of teaching it different attacks. That is kind of boring."

"You think that's boring? Ha!" Duplica scoffed and winked at him with her nose in the air. Beside her, Ditto didn't seem to take offense, and simply jiggled itself up and down in the air like Jell-O. "Well, that's what everyone says who doesn't understand Ditto's real power."

"It's real power?" Now Ash was interested.

"Let's have a little match," Duplica proposed. "Then you'll understand, Ashy-boy."

"Ashy-boy?" the Pallet Town Trainer repeated, the nickname leaving a bad taste in his mouth. But, nevertheless, he followed Duplica onto the stage, and both Trainers took a side of it. Ash recalled his Wartortle back into its Poké Ball, but Duplica kept her Ditto by her side. Disappearing behind the curtains momentarily, large spotlights flickered on with a loud groan of a switch, and they shone down onto the pair. Meanwhile, Brock sat on the ground looking up at the stage while resting his chin in his fingers with interest.

"Ditto's power. Let's just see..." the Pokémon Breeder muttered to himself, barely audible to Ash who looked across at Duplica. She gestured to her Ditto.

"I choose to use my Ditto, of course."

"You choose what you want!" Ash snapped, and twisted his cap backwards before drawing a Poké Ball from his belt and rearing his arm back. "Bulbasaur, I choose you!" The ball hit the stage with a thunk, and it opened and spilled out its contents, releasing the Seed Pokémon once the energy faded around it.

"Bulbazaur!" it cried.

Copying Ash, Duplica took her Pokémon League Expo hat and twisted it backwards on her head before pointing forward. "Go, little Ditto! Transform!"

"Ditto!" Her Pokémon wobbled forward with a blank smile on its face when its body began to glow an iridescent pearl color. Its body changed shape completely, and when the glow faded, it had taken the form of a Bulbasaur, but with the same face it had as a Ditto.

"Bulbasaur?!" Ash's Bulbasaur was taken aback by the attack, and gave its opponent a confused look.

"Bulba," Ditto responded bluntly and perfectly mimicking Bulbasaur's voice, and Bulbasaur blinked.

"You'll have to be better than that!" Ash said, oozing with confidence, but Duplica wagged her finger.

"You haven't seen the best part yet!" This comment angered Ash, and he growled loudly as his temper flared.

"I'll show her!" he declared, his voice echoing in the large auditorium. "Bulbasaur, Razor Leaf!"

"Bulbazaur! Bulbasaur..." The Pokémon's red eyes flashed as its Trainer issued a command, and it lowered its head as a flurry of spinning leaves came out from underneath the bulb on its back and spiraled out at Ditto.

"Ditto... Vine Whip!" Duplica countered. Ditto responded with a high-pitch Bulbasaur cry, and two vines reached out from under its artificial bulb, reaching out and stretching towards its originator's Razor Leaf attack. With a wave from them both, the vines struck the spinning leaves, and Ash and Brock both gasped, but none looked more shocked as Bulbasaur as the leaves fell uselessly around the stage floor.

"It can imitate attacks, too?!" Brock exclaimed from the sidelines.

"All right! Ditto, restrain Bulbasaur!" Duplica instructed. Its vines were already extended out towards the middle of the arena, so Ditto didn't have to exude any force in stretching them out toward Ash's Bulbasaur. The Grass and Poison Pokémon was so thrown off by the entire battle that it didn't have time to react to the vines, and soon the vines wrapped around its neck and legs similar to a hogtie. The Pokémon gave a choking sound as it was raised and suspended high in the air. Ash gave another shocked cry, and looked up at his Pokémon helplessly. "Have you had enough yet, Ashy-boy?" she asked cheekily, scratching under her eye in a teasing manner.

Ash's dark eyes flickered from Bulbasaur to Ditto to Duplica, but finally, he held out both of his hands and spread his fingers as if to push her away. "All right, I understand. I give up!" Immediately, Ditto released its vines from Bulbasaur, and as the Pokémon plopped to the ground with a crash, the imposter-Bulbasaur started to glow pink as it reverted back into a Ditto. Brock seemed amazed, but Ash, however, simply stared down at Bulbasaur's defeated body blankly.

"But... how... how could the real thing lose?"

The rain was still coming down hard, and could be heard pattering on the roof of the House of Imite, so once Ash had recalled his Bulbasaur back into its Poké Ball, Duplica offered to show him and Brock something. They headed up the stairs to the higher floor of the theater, but for once, Brock was in the lead with Ash trailing behind with a faraway look on his face.

When they finally arrived at the destination, Duplica had brought them to a huge room that looked like a thrift store. There were rows and rows of stuffed hanging racks with more clothes on them than Ash had ever seen in his life. The turquoise-haired girl seemed excited, and her Ditto stayed with Brock as its Trainer ran toward one of the racks of clothes. She disappeared in them for a quick second, but then emerged out of the other side in a completely new outfit. She was wearing a familiar nurse's outfit, and even adorned a pink wig styled exactly like how Nurse Joy's hair was.

"Don't worry! I'll take good care of it!" she said, pulling off a perfect impression of Nurse Joy. Turning back into the clothes rack, she disappeared into it again before coming out of the opposite side. This time, she was wearing a police officer's uniform, and had quickly styled her hair to look just like Officer Jenny's under the cap. She saluted Brock and gave him a smile. "My name is Jenny. You're under arrest for Pokémon poaching!" Once again, it was a spot-on impression. If she hadn't looked younger, and her eyebrows were different, they would have easily mistaken Duplica for the real Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny. But Brock wasn't too impressed.

"Very good..." he commented critically with a frown while Ditto cheered at his feet. "But she doesn't capture the more adult charm of the real Joy and Jenny."

"With all these costumes, I can imitate just about anybody! Watch!" Once again, Duplica dove into the clothing rack, but a different one, and this time when she emerged, she was wearing a green vest over an orange t-shirt, and brown khakis with a matching brown wig. She scrunched up her eyes to mimic Brock exactly, and gave a chuckle that sounded just like his own.

"Woah..." the former Gym Leader muttered. He raised his eyebrows at the impersonation, and turned to Ash to get his opinion, but the Pokémon Trainer wasn't paying attention, and though his eyes were looking out at the rain pouring down the window and his chin was resting in the palm of his hand, his mind was a million miles away. Seeing his friend upset, he approached him. "Don't be so down, Ash. That Ditto's powers are... unbeatable!"

"I just can't believe I lost the match to a great big fake," Ash spat as his eyebrows furrowed together.

"You shouldn't think of it as a fake," Brock corrected. "But I'm even more impressed by how much knowledge Duplica has."

The response pulled Ash's eyes away from the window and they glittered with wonder. "Knowledge?"

"Well think about it; why do you think Duplica had Ditto use Vine Whip – instead of Razor Leaf – against your Bulbasaur?" When Ash didn't respond, Brock continued. "Duplica must know all Bulbasaur's potential attacks! She could order Ditto to use the strongest attack possible; according to whatever Pokémon form it takes!" Just then, Duplica emerged from around a clothing rack, in seemingly normal clothes for once, and judging from the smile on her face, she had heard their conversation. She had her wild hair tied up in a pair of puffy pigtails in the back of her head, and she wore big jeans with a tight-fitting graphic t-shirt featuring a star. "You must have studied a lot, Duplica, to be able to battle in any situation like that."

"Oh, stop it, Brock! You're making me blush!" she replied bashfully as she rubbed the back of her head. Finally, the grumpy look on Ash's face melted away slowly as Brock's words sunk in.

"I get it... It's more than just imitation!" he realized. "It's incredible. You would make a great Pokémon Master."

"No way!" she quickly responded with her nose in the air. "I just want to become the greatest Ditto Master!"

"A Ditto Master?" Ash and Brock mirrored.

"You got it!" Duplica replied with a wink. "And I want to be a big star!" To explain, she brought them back down to the main auditorium, and when they arrived back at their original destination, she looked up at the stage with a dreamy look. "You see, I started this Imite House because I like to imitate Pokémon! This place is so flat and boring, but people pass by here all the time! I thought maybe when they stop here for a rest, I could entertain them!"

She climbed up onto the stage where her and Ash had their battle – bringing her Ditto with her and closing her eyes while putting her face to the air as if bathing in the spotlights that weren't turned on. But then she gave a saddened look down to her Ditto. "The only trouble is, Ditto hasn't been able to fix this weird problem that keeps its face from transforming the right way. And that's what happens." Leaping down once again, Ditto frowned and slid off the stage after its Trainer. "When people watch Ditto, they don't wanna see an imperfect transformation. This little one is trying its hardest to master Transform perfectly. But its face still stays the same." Ditto sunk into the floor, looking like a puddle of goo.

"Ditto..."

"I guess... being a Ditto Trainer's tough..." Ash murmured, and then, looking down at how sad Ditto and Duplica looked, the corners of his mouth curled once again. "Duplica, we'll help you and Ditto master Transform!"

"Y-you will?" the girl replied, thrown off by how abrupt the offer was. "But I've tried everything."

"But there's one thing you don't have that Brock and I have," he pointed out. "We have a lot of Pokémon between us. Maybe what Ditto needs is to Transform into a bunch of different Pokémon to work out the kinks!"

"Yeah! They always say that practice makes perfect!" Brock chimed in with a smile. Duplica's gaze shifted to Ditto, and though she seemed unsure, she agreed with a nod. That was all Ash needed.

Plucking every one of his Poké Balls from his belt, he tossed them high into the air. Six bursts of light poured down from the ceiling, and each one of his Pokémon appeared with a cry.

"Wartortle!"

"Bulba-zaur!"

"Charman!"

"Mankee!"

"Moooo!"

"Pigeoooo!"

"And don't forget mine!" Brock called, throwing his own Poké Balls toward the ceiling. Five pops sounded all at once, and his Onix, Geodude, Zubat, Vulpix and Psyduck.

"Wow, there certainly are a variety of Pokémon here!" Duplica commented, smiling as she looked at all of them. This seemed to make her more comfortable with the idea. "Okay, which one do we try first!"

And so, everyone lined up, starting with the Pokémon that were closest to Ditto's face first. Wartortle and Bulbasaur were excluded from the group, since Ditto had already transformed into them. Front of the row was Brock's Psyduck. The Pokémon stared blankly ahead while holding its head in its arms, and Duplica pointed at Psyduck. "All right, Ditto! Transform!"

"Ditto!" Her Pokémon nodded, and looking at Psyduck briefly, its body began to glow and slowly morph into the shape of Psyduck. When the light faded, its face was still the same. Strangely enough, however, it looked more intelligent than Psyduck normally did, which made Ash chuckle quietly behind his hand.

"Why don't we try Zubat?" Brock suggested, and the blue Pokémon fluttered forward upon hearing its name. "It doesn't have eyes, so Ditto just has to focus on getting rid of its eyes altogether!"

"That's a great idea, Brock!" Duplica stated. "Ditto, is there a way you can try?"

"Ditto!" Ditto nodded, and gained a face of determination. Like before, its body shimmered with energy, and it rose into the air as its sides began to flap, and when the light faded, instead of having a wide open mouth like Zubat, it had a big, cheeky grin with dotty eyes. "Zuba!"

"Well, at least its voice changed," Duplica murmured, resting her fingers above her eyebrows.

Geodude had no change, and neither did Charmander. Tauros saw a little bit of improvement with a snout, but the Transform Pokémon still retained a smile sitting on the front of it.

"Well, going off what Brock said, Mankey's mouth is hidden," Ash thought aloud. "Maybe we can try him."

"It's worth a try," Brock agreed, looking up at the Fighting Pokémon who wasn't paying any attention to the crowd at all and was happy swinging from light to light above. "And it's at least in a good mood!"

"Hey Mankey, get down here!" Ash called to his Pokémon, and the Pig Monkey Pokémon's ears perked upon hearing its name before swinging down and giving a chuckle as it stared up with happy narrow eyes at Ash. "Mankey, will you let Ditto Transform into you?" Mankey looked over at Ditto, who had just reverted back from Onix, and it clapped its paws together excitedly. An amused chuckle escaped its mouth as it hopped from foot to foot excitedly to see itself.

"All right, Ditto. You know what to do," Duplica said from her perch on the side of the stage. Like many times before, Ditto began to shimmer and shine, and it changed shape once again, sprouting ears, long limbs and a curled tail. But when the glow faded, its face had stayed the same.

"Aw, man," Ash groaned, frowning. "Well, it was worth a try. Thanks for your help anyway, Mankey." But despite saying this, Mankey didn't move. In fact, it seemed frozen in place. "Mankey?" Ash approached his Pokémon and peered at its face, and suddenly, his blood ran cold. Mankey's eyes had opened up, and its red irises were glaring with anger at Ditto while it huffed out of its snout. Mankey did not find the transformation amusing.

"Uh oh," Brock muttered, and Duplica cocked an eyebrow and opened her mouth to ask what they were talking about, but with a loud cry from Mankey, her unspoken question was answered. The Fighting-type stomped its feet against the ground before launching itself at Ditto.

"MANKEE!" it snarled. Ditto cried out in horror as Mankey collided with it and began Thrashing at it, wildly hitting it with punches, kicks and scratches. The two Pokémon tussled in the middle of the floor as a mass of fur and limbs, and the other Pokémon around them cried and screeched frantically, but didn't want to get involved in case Mankey turned on them.

"Ash! Your Mankey is hurting Ditto! Make it stop!" Duplica shouted, leaping off the stage and nervously watching the pair tussle.

Seeing no other choice, Ash pulled out Mankey's Poké Ball and pointed it at the Pig Monkey Pokémon. "Mankey, return!" But when the red recall beam shot out, the two Mankey rolled to the side, and the beam hit the floor uselessly. Ash growled and did it again, but the same result happened. Swallowing the lump in his throat, Ash put away Mankey's Poké Ball and bravely stomped forward. "All right Mankey, you cut it out right now-" he shouted, reaching into the pair and pulling one away, lifting the Pokémon high above his head to separate the two. Looking down, he saw Mankey angrily staring up at the Pokémon in Ash's hand, breathing heavily and covered in scuff marks. "Oh, then that must mean I have-" But when he lowered his hands, he looked back to see Mankey's red irises glaring back at him. The Pokémon in his arms was huffing as well. "I-I don't... believe it!"

"What's wrong, Ash?" Brock questioned, and when he approached and looked at the two Mankey, he gasped. "I-it worked! Mankey must have scared Ditto so much that it made it change its face!"

Their eyes went over to Duplica, who was staring at the Mankey on the floor and her eyes drifted up to the one in Ash's hands before a smile slowly grew on her face, and tears shimmered in her eyes. Clasping her hands together and intertwining her fingers, she looked up at the Mankey in its Trainers arms. "Oh, thank you!" she said to it, and then looked at all of them. "Thank you all! I've tried everything I could think of to get Ditto to imitate faces! Now Ditto can finally become the kind of Pokémon I always knew it could be!"

"Duplica..." Ash muttered while Brock wiped a tear from his eye. Mankey, however, was still locked in its rage, and the moment was ruined when it brought down a foot on Ash's head. The boy let out a groan and fell backwards, and it pushed down Duplica as well to get to Ditto, and the two began to brawl once again.

"Mankey's Thrash is getting out of hand!" Brock told Ash as the two younger Trainers peeled themselves off the floor.

"I know that!" Ash snapped back, but Duplica stood and smiled.

"Don't worry, Ash! We'll take care of Mankey!" she assured him, brimming with confidence. "Ditto, Mega Kick!" One of the two Mankey was suddenly launched into the air when the opposite one drove its foot into the other, and it let out a cry as it soared through the air. "And now, we'll finish things off with Seismic Toss!"

"Diiitttttoooo!" Ditto cried, jumping from its position on the ground to catch up to the Mankey that it had just kicked toward the ceiling. Once it reached it, it snatched its head and its leg in each of its paws before giving a mighty swing downward. Mankey let out a cry as it was slammed into the floor, and when the dust settled, the Pig Monkey Pokémon was knocked out on the ground.

"Great job, Ditto!" Duplica congratulated, running up and opening her arms wide. As expected, the transformed Mankey landed in her arms, and she wrapped them around her Pokémon as it glowed and reverted back to its gelatinous form. "That was great! You've learned how to completely Transform!" She rubbed her face against her Ditto while Ash recalled his Mankey into its Poké Ball, and the rest followed, but before he could recall Wartortle, Duplica smiled and looked down at her Ditto. "Ditto, would you please Transform into a Wartortle?"

"Dit-to!" her Pokémon responded confidently, jumping out of her arms and onto the ground. Raising its arm, it shimmered and changed shape into Wartortle as it had when they first arrived, but when the glow faded, it didn't keep its face – it had the face of a Wartortle. "Wartortle!"

"War?" Ash's Wartortle approached and cocked its head curiously, while Ditto smiled back at it.

"Wartortle!" The two grinned at each other, and Ash and Brock looked down at them with smiles on their faces.

"I can hardly believe it! Mankey's short temper was actually good for something!" Ash commented with a chuckle.

"Yeah!"

"Hey, Ditto, great job!" Ash complimented, kneeling down to look at the two. But then, the smile on his face faded as his dark eyes darted between the two Wartortle, who had wrapped their arms around each other and faced him.

"Wartor."

"Wartor."

"But now I can't tell which one's my Wartortle..."

"Then I guess you need to keep training, Ashy-boy." Ash frowned at the nickname she had given him and she knelt down and picked up the rightmost Wartortle and held it in her arms with care. "Right, Ditto?" Ditto reverted back to its original form, and Duplica once again hugged it close. Ash was amazed at how she knew instantly, and stood up and smiled as the pair embraced happily.

The rain finally stopped, and the sun was out once again. High up on a ladder with Ash and Brock supporting its feet, a loud hammering was knocking at the top of it. With newly-strung banners and now the addition of a newly-fixed sign, the Ditto Trainer pulled back her mallet and examined her hard work. "There! The Imite House is reopened!"

"Congratulations!" Ash said excitedly as he waved up to the copycat and her Ditto. With her work complete, Ash and Brock retrieved their backpacks and slung them back over their shoulders, and from up on the ladder, Duplica and Ditto both waved their hands down to them.

"Thanks for everything! Please come back and see us anytime, okay?"

"Good luck!" Ash called back, and gave her a wink and raised a fist in her direction. "And take care of yourself, Ditto Master!" Another final wave from the pair, and they turned their back to the Imite House and continued back down the path ahead, but Ash's head was lost in the clouds, a smile spread across his face as they left Duplica and her transforming Pokémon behind.

"Imagine, the strength of all the Pokémon in one! Maybe I'll capture a Ditto for myself someday!"
