Hermione finds herself unexpectedly in the middle of a Death Eater revel. Professor Snape comes to her aid, and in the process, the two are cursed by Lucius Malfoy. The consequences of the curse are such that Professor Dumbledore feels the best solution would be for the two to marry, particularly in light of everything else happening.
