Lena was lonely. She missed her brother. She doesn't regret turning him in. She just wishes she didn't have to.
Lex was her favorite.
Growing up, he was always there for her. He was much older than her when she was adopted. Normally siblings wouldn't be all that close in that situation, but Lex was different. He was so smart and charming everyone could see that. Yet he didn't really have friends just people that wanted to suck up to him.
He was above them all.
He was a Luthor.
So when Lena was adopted, no one expected Lex to take a liking to her. Lillian certainly didn't and her biological parents clearly hadn't either. Lex saw something in her. She was smart. Given the proper training, she could be his equal. Maybe he wouldn't be alone after all.
They played chess and built robots together. They shared books and marveled at the stars. By the time Lena was in college, Lex had molded her into his perfect equal. She was just as smart and charming as he was. Together they would lead LuthorCorp to the top of the business world.
At some point their goal shifted. The business world wasn't enough. Lex wanted more. He wasn't content with running the world if no one knew he was the one in charge. He wanted everyone to know who held the power, who was in control.
Lena liked power as well. She liked what she could do with it. She could change world to reflect her ideals if she had the right resources. Unlike Lex, she wasn't drawn to weapons manufacturing, so her creations generally did more 'good' than bad. She wasn't in it for moral reasons or anything good really, she just saw the potential profit that came with it. She couldn't care less if some random kid across the world lived or died because of her technology. She just cared that people bought it and they were much more likely to buy it if it worked. And if her scientists came up with an alternative use of her technology that happened to be a weapon, she'd sell that too as long as it were profitable.
So, they were going to take over the world.
Together they would rule. It was okay that they didn't have any friends because they had each other. They didn't have time for friends. They had each other and minions, that was enough. They had the other to stimulate their minds and if they happened to need something more physical well, minions trying to curry favor were perfect for scratching that itch. It made them easier to control really made them feel special and more willing to break a few rules for you.
They had amassed a lot of followers over the years learning early on how to have men, women, and others at their feet. Neither were picky over who they took to bed, not seeing the point in limiting themselves in that way. However, Lex's ego did limit him in a way. He refused to give up control in any way and that unfortunately carried over to sex. He constantly boasted about never having bottomed even when it messed up their plans and Lena had to go in there and fix his mess.
Lex lacked finesse. He was too caught up to see that being on the bottom didn't mean giving up control. Lena was a perfect example of how someone could hold all the power while bottoming; it's just too bad Lex couldn't see it. He equated physical dominance and raw power with control. It made sense. He was a tall man who regularly visited the gym and had enough money to hold a security force that could arguably be considered a small army. He never needed to learn to control something from the bottom. He was born at the top, born to inherit the earth, born the Man of Tomorrow.
Suffice it to say, he took it a bit hard when a man, an alien, rescued a falling plane and changed the world forever.
It started out small, but soon enough Lex was obsessed. He started withdrawing from her in his quest for answers. Looking for a way to be on top again. He lost his temper with her over the smallest things. They had only each other so he took all his aggression out on her. Eventually, it wasn't Lex and Lena against the world but Lex against Superman and Lena alone trying to continue their plans.
The longer Lex's war on Superman lasted, the madder he became. He got sloppy so Lena had to turn him in. While they hadn't been working together for a few months, most of their plans involved them both. If Lex went down, then so did she. So, she got ahead of the problem and went about 'investigating' Lex collecting enough evidence, so he'd go down quietly. Then she could continue without scrutiny.
And then Lex turned the sun red, kidnapped her, and tried to kill the Man of Steel.
Lex was instead taken down by Superman in a very public way. He was beaten. Lena was found to have nothing to do with his evil deeds after she provided her evidence. Lex was in jail, and she was a free woman free to take over the world just as she'd planned. Except now, everyone hated the Luthor. Where before she had no friends by choice, now she couldn't pay someone enough to just talk to her.
So, Lena Luthor was lonely. She missed her brother. She was taking over the world alone. She was getting a dog.
Normally, she'd have someone to shop for whatever she desired, but this was different. She'd never had a pet; she wanted to be sure the dog was a right fit for her.
When LuthorCorp moved to National City, the DEO took notice. During the Lex Luthor's investigation people had looked into Lena Luthor as well so sure that she had to be involved since the siblings were known to be close, but nothing was found. She was clean. I t also helped that she provided a lot of the evidence against Lex and had clearly been collecting it for a long time.
Despite her innocent appearance, it would be stupid to not surveille her. She had a lot of power and could be very dangerous if she so pleased.
So, they watched her, but they couldn't get anyone to spy on her not anyone close enough to her that the information gathered would matter.
An agent heard Luthor was looking for a dog. Normally, this wouldn't matter but they were desperate. People throughout all kinds of ideas. For a while the best idea would be for an agent to give their dog away to the Luthor maybe ask to see it once in a while to gain access to her home and hopefully be able to bug it, but no one was willing to give up their pets. They briefly considered getting a shelter pet and passing it off as theirs but didn't think the dog would be believably joyful at seeing their previous owner for visits.
Luckily, this wasn't the end. Months later and Miss Luthor was still looking for a dog and Agent Danvers had just given them the perfect candidate.
Not many knew this, but Kryptonians had two forms, their normal humanoid shape and another wolf like shape derived from the ancestors they evolved from. Superman couldn't access this form since he'd never been taught. If he'd bothered to talk to Kara, she could teach him, but for now it was only Kara that could transform. Only Eliza and Alex knew of this ability having found Kara transformed and curled up in a corner after Jeremiah had been taken.
Agent Danvers said her sister had recently graduated from NCU and was looking for a temporary job while she got something in her field. So, this situation was perfect. As far as the world knew the only Kryptonian left was Superman and only Kara could transform. She could shift and be dropped off at the Luthor's home by an agent. Said agent would ideally leave the place bugged for them to observe even when Kara was done with the mission and Kara could snoop around the place as much as she wished. No one would suspect her. They were banking on Luthor leaving Kara alone for long stretches of time where Kara would be able to investigate her properly. She might even be able to get a story out of this.
They distributed the fliers. Now all they had to do was wait.
After shopping around for a few months, she was at a loss. She didn't know what she was looking for, but she hadn't found it. She'd looked at hundreds of dogs of various breeds, temperament, and pedigree, but they were all lacking.
She was ready to give up when she came across a flier on her way home. Someone was moving and needed to find their dog a new home and they were willing to do a test run before the new owner fully committed. This was perfect for Lena. She could do the test run and see if she even wanted a dog in the first place.
As soon as she got home, she called the number and set up a test run for that weekend. The owner would drop the dog off, a girl Zorelle or Elle for short, after work on Friday and pick her up Sunday evening. It was perfect. Lena already had plenty of supplies bought months earlier when she'd begun looking for a four-legged companion. All she had to do was buy some food and clear her weekend of non-critical work.
Lena was lounging on her couch Friday evening enjoying a glass of wine while going over LCorp's quarterly expenses when she heard a knock on her door.
She stood wiping her hand on her pants as she made her way to the door. She was nervous, she must want this more than she realized.
A red-haired woman greeted her as she opened the door, "Jane," Lena remembered, "and this must be Elle," she said as she took in the enormous dog, if you could even call it that, that sat beside the woman. She was massive. Lena now understood why it'd been so easy for her to set up a meeting and why Jane must be having trouble finding someone to take Elle in. "I didn't know she'd be so big," Lena said to Alex.
"Is that a problem?" Alex asked, nervous the mission would be over before it even started.
"No no, I have plenty of room. I'm just…. surprised," Lena assured.
They stood there awkwardly until Alex asked if she could come in and get Elle acquainted with the place. "Of course, I was just having a glass of wine. Feel free to look around while I put this away," she said motioning to her files. "I can show you Elle's room for the weekend."
"Her room?" gawked Alex.
"Yes," answered Lena, "where else would she sleep?" she said a slight tilt to her head.
"Well normally, people let their pets sleep at the foot of their beds," she explained hoping to get Kara access to Lena's bedroom and anything within it.
"I'll keep that in mind," Lena said as she turned and disappeared into a room with her files and just like that Kara was in.
Elle was very well mannered, clearly Jane had trained her well. It was Saturday night, and everything had gone perfectly. Elle was a bit curious about her surroundings looking about everywhere but she was careful and never broke anything.
Lena was a bit surprised at how persistent her curiosity was. On Saturday, Lena awoke early like always and spent some time in her home lab. While studying Kryptonite, she'd made a new substance similar to Kryptonite but red. She'd been testing it, but it seemed to be useless overall. She was thinking of branding it as a new precious gem for jewelry. It could at least be sourced ethically.
Lena finally finished her first attempt at making jewelry with the stone. She made a simple ring which she now wore. She found Elle staring at her laptop screen. That's weird. She didn't remember leaving it open. She walked over and closed it causing Elle to startle as if she'd been engrossed in the screen. She was probably daydreaming Lena determined.
She sat on the couch, "I was nervous over nothing," calling Elle over petting her soft blonde fur, "I think I'm going to keep you… assuming Jane lets me of course. I've felt less lonely these past couple of days than I have in a while."
Elle looked at her with such intelligence Lena almost believed she understood her. Lena thought she saw a hint of red in her eyes but was distracted when suddenly Elle jumped at her licking her face making Lena shriek and giggle at the attack. It looked like Elle was getting comfortable with her. While she hadn't been particularly difficult or distant, Elle hadn't been that affectionate either.
