Ten Miles off of the Coast of Costa Rica, 8/11/1993
What Harry didn't know was that less than thirty minutes after Vernon Dursley tossed him into the open ocean, a fire had broken out on the rented boat and the Dursley family was forced to abandon ship themselves.
Even more unfortunate for the Dursleys, is that they had neglected to wear their life jackets, Petunia because it didn't match her dress, Vernon and Dudley because the life jackets were nowhere near big enough to fit them comfortably.
They were unable to grab a lifejacket before jumping into the sea as the storage compartment that their lifejackets were stored in was near the source of the fire on the bow of the boat.
The cause of the fire was Dudley Dursley accidentally firing off a flare gun he had found when rummaging in the emergency compartment. The flare had discharged inside said emergency compartment and ignited some canvas tarps before, the lifejackets themselves caught fire. Dudley had run to retrieve the fire extinguisher in the cockpit of the boat but by then the fire had found a plastic one-gallon jug of gasoline which engulfed the whole bow of the boat in flames spewing thick black smoke into the sky.
Misfortune seemed to be the order of the day for the Dursleys as Vernon Dursley cut his leg on the propeller when he jumped off the stern of the boat though luckily he had killed the engine when Dudley brought the fire to his attention.
The three Dursleys watched on in horror as the boat was completely engulfed in flames while they tread water, Petunia struggling to keep her head above the surface due to her lack of body fat.
Dudley was distracted from watching the boat burn when he spotted a dorsal fin break the water's surface in the distance.
Anyone who has seen Jaws knows exactly what this was, and Dudley was no exception.
"D-dad," Dudley stuttered out in horror.
"What Dudley!" Vernon snapped as he was trying to think about what the should do now.
"Do you see th-that?" Dudley asked weakly pointing to the fin that was approaching them.
"See what!" Vernon asked looking in the direction his son pointed.
Dudley didn't answer as he saw three more dorsal fins appear on the water's surface, Vernon's bleeding leg was calling to the bull sharks in the area like a dinner bell.
It didn't take long after Dudley noticed the sharks that Petunia noticed them as well crying out in alarm.
This caught her husband's attention momentarily before a particularly large shark bit the bleeding area on his left leg causing him to cry out.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAH IT BIT ME!" Vernon shrieked as the water around him turned pink from the blood haemorrhaging from his mangled leg.
"SHARKS! HELP! HELP!" screamed in a hysterical high-pitched voice before swimming frantically away from the boat to the coastline far off in the distance, the panicked splashing attracting the sharks' attention as effectively as blood in the water.
Petunia heard her husband scream in agony again and a second later Dudley gave a blood-curdling wail of pain as he was bitten by one of the dozens of bull sharks now swimming in the water around the Dursley family.
Petunia was brought painfully back to the present when she felt a crushing pain around her thigh before the water around her turned red as a bull shark ripped a massive chunk of flesh out of her leg.
Petunia started feeling lightheaded as she struggled even harder to keep her head above water, her lack of body fat making her nowhere near as buoyant as her husband and son. Soon Petunia lost consciousness her body sinking below the surface of the water as the blood loss took its toll.
Within the next hour, all three Dursleys were bitten multiple times by curious bull sharks attracted by the blood in the water and Petunia's panicked splashing.
Contrary to popular belief, sharks don't really like the taste of humans very much. The sharks quickly moved on when they realized the food the Dursley family offered was not up to their normal standards.
Sadly, the damage had already been done, an exploratory bite from a shark even a smaller one like a bull shark turns human flesh into the consistency of ground hamburger.
The damage caused by a bull shark tearing through flesh with multiple rows of serrated teeth at a bite force of over thirteen hundred pounds per square inch is devastating. The thrashing motion the shark makes after the initial bite amplifies the trauma of the wound as it tears away a large chunk of flesh from its prey. A bite on the leg or arm could easily prove fatal if not treated immediately.
The Dursley family didn't get immediate assistance, truthfully the Costa Rican authorities wouldn't even know they were missing until the first body washed up on shore.
Sadly the Dursley family sucumbed to their injuries and bled out before the flaming boat had even sunk underneath the waves.
Vernon Dursley would be found several days later washed up on a remote beach being fed on by scavengers in the area.
Dudley and Petunia would be found a few days later in different locations along a beach further south, their bodies also badly bloated and unrecognizable due to scavengers attacking their corpses.
Once the three Dursleys were identified by Costa Rican authorities (through dental records) the British government was informed that the Dursley family and their nephew, a Harry Potter had died in a boating accident the body of their nephew was deemed 'lost at sea'.
Hogwarts Head's Office, 8/13/1993
Albus Dumbledore was in a panic, the wards on Privet Drive had collapsed two days ago. After Dumbledore had made a few discreet inquiries with his contacts at the ministry, he had learned that Harry Potter was out of the country with his relatives.
According to Arthur Weasley, the Dursleys had gone on a two-week trip to Costa Rica. Arthur had even managed to obtain the records from Heathrow International that proved Harry Potter had boarded a flight to Houston Texas on the eighth of August.
All of the items that Harry kept on him during the school year except for his glasses and his wand were still in his trunk at Privet Drive.
Albus had placed a subtle tracking charm on most of Harry's possessions in case the boy was lost or kidnapped but the only item Harry had taken with him that could be tracked was his glasses.
Sadly the tracking charm on Harry's glasses was not registering on the map Albus had tied to the tracking charm so, so that avenue wasn't of much help.
Unfortunately, you could not place a tracking charm on another wizard's wand as it would be cancelled out by the trace which really frustrated the aged headmaster at the moment.
Even more frustrating was that the British trace only worked on the British Isles as it utilized monitoring stones placed around the borders of Magical Britain and Scotland. Outside of Britain, a British child could use magic to their heart's content and no one would ever know as the other ministries used different methods to detect underage magic within their borders.
As much as Albus wanted to scour the world looking for his missing student the country was already in the throws of a crisis after Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban two nights ago.
Albus would place a few calls with some of his friends in the Costa Rican ministry asking them to keep an eye out for young Mr Potter but that was all he could really do at present. He had been in daily meetings with the minister and the board of governors trying to prevent the ministry from placing dementors on school grounds during the upcoming school year.
Albus was still troubled by the fact that the wards on Privet Drive had fallen as both possible explanations as to why this happened were bad news in his opinion.
The first is that Harry had been kicked out of the Dursley home and he could no longer consider it his home. There was the similar possibility that Harry had proclaimed that Privet Drive was no longer his home causing the wards to collapse.
The second explanation was that either Harry or the Dursleys had been killed making the wards unable to anchor themselves to the residence.
The former was preferable though it would still create problems in finding a safe place for young Harry to stay during the summer holidays. That was niether here nor there right now, first young Harry had to be found.
Albus popped a lemon drop in his mouth and sighed in frustration. He knew the boy was alive deep down in his bones so for the time being he would have to wait, the Dursley family wasn't due back for another week so he would have to wait until then before he could take any direct action.
"Please be safe, my boy," Albus whispered out loud as he went back to reading through the latest proposal Cornelius had sent for posting dementors around the school's perimeter.
