AN: First off, the response to this story was way better than I expected so thank you.
AN: Now comes the scene that we've all been waiting for and frankly this scene has one of the biggest plot holes I've ever seen! How was there a hundred-foot drop-off into the T-Rex paddock? If the wall was as high as it's depicted then why was there even an electric fence over said drop-off? The first car was rolled over but was still roughly in the same place it stopped when the power went out, so how did a flat clearing where the goat was tethered to a stake become a hundred-foot cliff? I have the scene running while I'm writing this as it helps for describing the park, dinosaurs, etc. That one scene where they repel down that massive retaining wall still makes no sense!
AN: So I guess it's a good time to mention that this is where the story veers away from the film. I played it pretty close to canon so far but now it's time to shake things up a bit.
Inside the Park, Isla Nublar, 8/13/1993, 20:36
It was so bloody humid! The air conditioning like everything (minus the headlight for some reason) had stopped working when the car's power went out.
One would think the cars would have an alternative means of propulsion like a backup battery or something but it would seem that no redundant systems were being used at Jurassic Park.
Four people trapped in a car with the windows up in Central America meant that the interior of the car was stifling.
Dr Grant had just come over a few minutes ago to check on them. Though Harry thought he seemed more interested in their radio and had quickly dashed back to his vehicle when he learned theirs was out too.
"How long do you think it will take before they fix the power?" Lex asked from his right as she fanned herself with her hat.
"Not long I hope, probably after the storm passes over the island," Harry shrugged as lightning flashed again and he saw a brief flash of the goat looking thoroughly miserable out in the rain.
"But you said the fences aren't on either, won't the dinosaurs be able to get out?" Lex asked worriedly.
"I guess they could if they tried," Harry said vocalizing what had been on his mind since he saw the lights go out on the fence.
"Geez kid, you are one big downer," Gennaro said sounding alarmed by Harry's last statement.
"Sorry, but we are stranded in probably the worst place imaginable right now," Harry shrugged as he took the hem of his tee shirt and wiped the condensation off of the window.
"I never should have come here," Gennaro muttered his face paling when what Harry had said sank in.
"How are you not freaking out?!" Lex demanded looking more worried than before.
Harry ignored the question and looked out the window, he sighed in relief when he noticed the rain was not falling nearly as hard as it was ten minutes ago It was starting to get a bit lighter outside and he could now make out the outline of the mountains on the other side of the rex paddock.
"I think the storm is winding down," Harry said in a hopeful tone.
"Good maybe we can get out of here soon," Lex said seeming to cheer up at this news.
"I still can't believe this tour was so bad," Tommy muttered unhappily.
"You saw a dinosaur, you even got to touch it" Lex sighed getting tired of her brother's whining.
"I wanted to see a carnivore," Timmy muttered petulantly.
"thum'
" I kind of did too," Harry agreed noticing a strange sound over the steady rain still hitting the roof.
'Thum'
"I just wish there was food in the car, I'm starving," Lex sighed as her stomach made a soft grumbling sound.
'Thum'
"Do you hear that?" Timmy asked.
"I've been hearing it for a while now," Harry nodded as the sound steadily got louder.
'Thum'
"What is it?!" Lex asked as she noticed the sound for the first time.
"I don't know, I thought a tree had fallen at first but it's getting closer whatever it is," Harry said already having suspicion about what it was and praying that he was wrong.
'Thum'
'Thum'
This time the sound was really close, Gennaro was sitting ramrod straight and his breathing had sped up, it looked like he was on the verge of having a panic attack.
'Thum'
'Thum'
"Look at this," Timmy said pointing at the cup of water on the dashboard.
'Thum'.
'Thum '
Harry watched as a tiny ripple formed on the surface of the water and rippled outward in time with the sound.
'THUM'
'THUM'
"Could be an earthquake," Harry said hopefully.
'THUM'
'THUM'
"I don't think it's an earthquake,' Lex mumbled as lightning flashed again illuminating the area in blue light for a split second.
Harry's heart sank when he saw the bent stake the goat had been tied, but the goat was no longer there.
" Don't panic," Harry whispered more to himself than the others.
"Don't panic about wh-
'THUMP'
Lex was cut off from finishing her question as something landed on the glass room of the car. Harry groaned internally when he saw it was the bloody leg of the goat.
"Oh god!" Gennaro exclaimed as he saw the blood seeping over the glass.
Harry heard a metallic creaking and followed the sound to see two large claws pulling on the upper wires of the fence near one of the tin signs.
Harry had barely processed what he was seeing when a massive head came into view, it was enormous with long teeth curved like bananas. The rex actually looked into the car through the glass roof before lifting its head into the air and crunching down on the goat, the sound of the goat's bones snapping like toothpicks filled the air. Harry couldn't make out the colour of its skin but from what he could see in the limited light it looked to be a greyish colour, the underside of its jaw a lighter colour coloured grey.
"I got to get out of here!" Gennaro exclaimed sounding hysterical as he fumbled with the door handle before finally getting it open.
Harry watched incredulously as Genarro jumped out of the car, spilling the files he was going over out onto the ground as he ran back towards the other car leaving the door wide open.
"Unbelievable it's Lockhart all over again," Harry muttered as he climbed into the front seat and eased the door shut.
"W-where d-did he go?" Lex asked shakily her face frozen in terror.
"The loo from the looks of it," Harry muttered as he climbed back into his seat.
Harry cursed his luck as he heard an ominous metallic whining sound from the fence as the rex pushed against the upright supports with her massive head.
"Calm down Lex," Harry said in a soothing tone as he heard the sound of metal snapping as the horizontal wires of the fence broke one after the other.
"W-what do we do, it's getting out?" Timmy asked sounding terrified.
"Stay in the car and don't draw its attention," Harry said in a forced calm even though his heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest.
Harry gasped when the tyrannosaurus burst through the rest of the fence, stepping over the concrete ledge and onto the muddy road.
The dinosaur towered over the cars standing at close to twenty feet tall, as it moved out of the paddock. Harry thought it was at least twice as long as it was tall, Harry guessed it was at least forty feet from nose to tail
The T-Rex's head was absolutely massive and its snout had an oval shape to it and was very wide. The rex opened her mouth releasing an earsplitting roar and exposing massive six-inch teeth. Her jaws had an arch to them so that the teeth on the sides of the upper jaw were much lower in the middle than the rest of her mouth. Her yellow eyes were large and there were small crests of skin running over her eyes and down her snout, somehow making her look even more formidable.
Her neck was powerfully built and had to be as big around as the basilisk he had fought two months ago. Her body was even thicker and the muscles on her flank rippled with every step she took, her tiny arms swinging to and fro with every step.
Harry thought that she kind of moved like Hedwig when she would walk across the table, the t-rex bobbed her head slightly with every step just like a bird would. Her three-toed clawed feet sank into the mud as she approached the two cars, sniffing the air loudly making her breath rattle similar to a crocodile. Her large yellow eyes were scanning the area and she seemed to be almost... curious.
When she passed between the two cars and the headlight's light washed over her, Harry could finally get a good look at the colour of her pebbled skin. She was a greyish brown colour very similar to the triceratops from earlier, her belly was a lighter colour grey and there was a darker almost orange section running along her back and down her tail.
"It's out!" Lex exclaimed breathing rapidly as the rex passed by the rear of their car.
"It can't see us if we stay still, t-that's what i-it says in Dr Grant's book," Timmy said trying to sound reassuring.
"See we'll be fine," Harry whispered to Lex though truthfully he knew that logic was complete bollocks.
Animals don't hunt with just one of their senses, they may use their eyesight to hunt but most predators would still rely heavily on their sense of smell.
And judging by the way the rex was sniffing the ground near the front passenger door, the dinosaur had caught Gennaro's scent.
No, Harry would not be taking that chance, remaining still would just make them an easier meal
"Oh bugger," Harry muttered in alarm as the rex began sniffing the door as one large yellow eye looked into the car.
"Wh-what?" Lex demanded hysterically.
"She smells us," Harry said before the rex pushed her snout against the car lifting both wheels on the right side off of the ground before letting go so the three occupants were tossed around the car.
"AHHHHH!" Lex shrieked in horror before the car was rocked again, this time hard enough that the car flipped onto its side.
With a jarring 'crash' the car slammed into the mud, the windows shattering on impact and the car's three occupants tumbled across the car.
Harry groaned as he landed in the mud seeping in from the broken windows his hand striking the top of the window hard enough for him to see stars.
"Ow," Harry heard Lex groan from underneath him as he tried to shift around to let her up.
Before Harry could say anything the car was slammed into again causing the world to roll so that the car's roof was pressed into the mud and the three children were tossed across the car a second time.
Harry landed on his left side his flank pressed into the shattered glass from the roof before Lex landed on top of him.
Harry grunted in pain as shards of broken glass from the sunroof dug into his side Lex's weight forced the glass deeper into his skin.
Harry looked toward the front seat, fear gripping his stomach as he realised Timmy had tumbled out of the driver's side window and was lying sprawled out on the muddy road.
Harry could see the younger boy through the broken window about ten feet away, he was lying on his back with blood running down his forehead. The sound of the rex's heavy footfalls was heard as her focus was shifted from the car, Harry watched in horror as he saw the rex's massive feet approaching Timmy's downed form.
Harry scrambled to get up but Lex's weight was still pinning him down, she seemed a bit dazed and didn't respond when Harry called her name.
The rex was almost to Timmy when Harry heard Dr Grant screaming something inaudible. The sound froze the rex in her tracks for a split second as she realized there was more prey to be had.
"Come on Lex, you have to get up," Harry exclaimed as he finally managed to wiggle out from under her.
Harry could see the rex pivot on her heel through the window before she charged in the direction of the other car. Her heavy footfalls echoed over the rain before she let out a roar that sent a shiver down Harry's spine.
Harry took advantage of the distraction and clambered out of the broken car window. Harry looked over and saw Dr Grant heading to the other side of the car so and he sighed in relief.
Turning back to the car, Harry reached in and took hold of both of Lex's wrists. As gently as he could, Harry pulled her through the opening and out onto the muddy roadway, the rain hitting her face and causing her to stir slightly.
They had come out on the other side of the car from Timmy and he could hear the sounds of the rex getting closer again. Harry heard Dr Grant talking to Timmy on the other side of the car and made a decision.
Pulling Lex to her feet Harry led them across the road on the opposite side of the rex paddock, practically dragging her into the thick jungle just as the t-rex came back into view.
Harry hunkered down and watched as the rex charged toward Dr Grant and Timmy. It looked like Timmy was okay as he was standing beside Dr Grant, both of their backs against the concrete ledge of the paddock.
"What do we do now?!" Lex whispered frantically.
"Help them," Harry muttered as he drew his wand which had thankfully survived the crash.
Harry drew in a deep breath and pointed it at the crumpled car before incanting, "wingardium leviosa!"
"What are you doing?" Lex asked in confusion as she saw him pointing a stick at the dinosaur
Harry ignored the question, putting all of his concentration into levitating the car. It was almost painful as his magic began to raise the Crashed Ford Explorer into the air and his magic reacted to the load he was attempting to lift.
This was pushing the limits of what a levitation charm could do as the car slowly rose in the air, forcing Harry to push more and more magic into the spell. Sweat began running down his brow as the car rose over the confused rex, she watched it rise off of the ground completely forgetting about the two humans in front of her.
Likewise, Dr Grant was staring in confusion as the crumpled car rose thirty feet in the air to hover levelly before it lazily drifted over the dinosaur's head. It was hard to judge from here but Harry thought the car was pretty close to where he wanted it.
With a flick of his wrist, Harry cancelled the spell sending the car plummeting downward, the rex still staring at the floating vehicle was caught off guard when two tons of metal slammed into the top of her head sending her to the ground with an earth-shaking 'crash!'
The car bounced off her thick skull before it slammed into the muddy roadway a fraction of a second after the rex, hitting with a metallic 'crash.' the car tumbled end over end and landed on its wheels.
"What was that? Was that you?" Lex demanded as she stared through the trees at the downed rex.
"Come on we need to get back to the others," Harry replied, completely ignoring her question as he pocketed his wand.
Lex stayed close to him as they both stumbled out of the brush, and raced over to Dr Grant and Timmy who were staring at the down rex in shock.
"Did you see that?!" Timmy asked as soon as he sighted Lex and Harry.
"Yeah, we need to get out of here she's still alive," Harry said as he saw the rex's chest slowly rise and fall.
"R-right, we'll have to walk back to the visitor's centre," Grant nodded in agreement though he still seemed to be in a daze.
"Where's Dr Malcolm and Mr Gennaro?" Harry asked as they walked towards the other car, Lex leaning against him her arms wrapped around Harry's wand arm.
"I don't know Malcolm led the rex that way," Dr Grant said pointing towards the direction of the loo.
"Why?" Harry asked in confusion.
"So I could get Timmy out of the road," Grant shrugged as he leaned down and picked something out of the mud.
Harry didn't say anything else as the loo came into view or rather what used to be the loo but was now a pile of bamboo and palm fronds.
"Oh no!" Lex exclaimed as they moved closer.
Harry felt queasy when he saw what was unmistakably a severed human leg lying in the mud, the loafers and slacks the leg was still clothed in made it obvious who the leg had belonged to. Harry guided Lex away before she could see it and began searching for signs of Dr Malcolm and secretly hoping they didn't find any more pieces of Mr Genarro.
"I don't think the made-
Harry stopped midsentence when he heard a faint groan from in the wreckage of the loo.
" I hear something Harry muttered as he started sifting through the debris as quickly as he could.
Dr Grant soon copied him helping him search the wreckage and it wasn't long before Dr Grant called out, "I've got him, it's Ian!"
"Oww, I think my leg is shattered," Ian groaned as Harry and Alan pulled him out of the tangle of palm fronds.
"We have to move!" Harry said in an urgent whisper as he noticed the rex's tail starting to move side to side.
"He can't walk," Alan said looking at Dr Malcolm who had already passed out.
"Here, we'll stretcher him out," Harry said as he pointed towards a wooden section of the bathroom stall that was about six feet long and two or three feet wide.
"Good thinking," Grant nodded as they drug the piece of wood over.
It took about five minutes to get Ian on top of the board, they had to be gentle when transferring him as Dr Grant thought he might have a spinal injury.
Once they had him laying on the stretcher, Harry and Dr Grant heaved him off of the ground and began making their way toward the tunnel.
Their progress was slow as the ground was very slippery and it took a bit for Alan and Harry to move in sync but eventually they made it into the long tunnel. The tunnel had emergency lighting that was thankfully still working and they began the long trek through the base of the mountain.
Harry hopped the ceiling was too low for the rex to pursue them but just in case, he was the one walking backwards so he could look back and keep his eye out for the rex.
"Dr Grant?" Tim asked after they had been walking through the tunnel for about ten minutes or so.
"Yes?" Alan asked starting to feel fatigued from Carrying his colleague's weight.
"What happened with the car, how did it float into the air like that?" Timmy asked in confusion.
"I have no idea, never seen something like that before in my life," Dr Grant said quietly.
"I said the same thing when I saw the triceratops," Harry chuckled.
"Harry did that," Lex said quietly.
"Impossible," Dr Grant snorted.
"I saw him, he pointed this stick at the car and the car just rose in the air," Lex argued stubbornly.
"A stick?"Timmy snorted in disbelief.
" I know what I saw, tell him, Harry," Lex demanded.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Harry said looking away from Lex when she gave him a hurt look.
"How far is it to the visitor's centre?" Harry asked changing the subject to a more pressing issue.
"From what I remember from the ride here it's about a mile and a half," Dr Grant answered.
"I wonder what's through there?" Harry asked as he gestured his head towards the door they were walking past, it was built into the right wall of the tunnel.
"Let's set Ian down a minute and find out," Alan panted as he noticed the door.
After gently setting down the improvised stretcher on the tunnel floor, Dr grant pulled a small muddy flashlight from his pocket and twisted it looking pleased when it turned on and pointed it at the steel door. Unlike the other doors on the island, this one was mechanical with a silver door handle and a keyhole set into the handle, a white placard was affixed to the door with words written In red block letters,
NO ADMITTANCE
EMPLOYEES ONLY
Dr Grant tried the handle only to find the door was locked, "we can't get in, it's locked," Alan shrugged before going over to check on Ian.
While Grant and the others were distracted, Harry made his way over to the door and surreptitiously drew his wand, with a quick wave of his wand and a mumbled, alohomora," the lock clicked open.
Grinning, Harry quickly stowed his wand before calling out, "I got the door unlocked."
"How did you get it open?" Dr Grant exclaimed as Harry pushed the door open.
"I picked the lock," Harry said evasively as they stepped into a storeroom of sorts.
Dr Grant scanned his flashlight around the room finding a bunch of maintenance equipment that appeared to be mostly for the electric fencing. Harry saw a desk off to the side of the door and was surprised that there was a desk with a computer, a phone, and a large stack of folders.
Hurrying over Harry picked up the phone and pressed it to his ear only to slam it back down when there was no dial tone.
"There really isn't much in here we can use except the flashlights, all this stuff is for servicing the fences and track," Dr Grant said after he came back over to Harry and handed him a big boxy flashlight.
"Figures, the phones are dead as well," Harry sighed as he took the flashlight and shined it around the room.
The room was pretty spall maybe twenty by twenty and was full of racks of electrical connectors, light bulbs, spools of different gauge wires, sections of the track on the road, and a large toolbox.
"I guess we had better get moving," Dr Grant said before heading back into the tunnel.
Sighing that this room hadn't been the answer to their problems, Harry followed him out to find Lex and Tim huddled around Dr Malcolm.
"Here, you might find this useful," Harry said before he handed Lex the flashlight.
"Alright, let's get moving," Dr Grant said taking a position at the front of the makeshift stretcher.
Nodding, Harry took the other end of the stretcher as He and Alan lifted it up, Harry walking forwards this time.
"We're almost to the other side," Timmy said after they had been walking for what seemed like a half hour, Harry's calves were screaming from carrying the stretcher for so long.
"The tunnel didn't seem this long in the car," Harry groaned.
Before anyone could reply, they saw a bright light shine through the tunnel from the direction they were walking. Even better, they could hear the unmistakable sound of a gas engine heading their way.
"Looks like they sent someone to pick us up," Dr Grant said sounding relieved.
"Thank god," Harry muttered as they set the stretcher on the tunnel floor while Lex shined the light towards the incoming Jeep.
'I just hope this is the end of it,' Harry thought as he leaned against the tunnel wall feeling completely exhausted.
