Long ago...

Edge dodged left and right as the Shadow androids fired missiles at him, their yellow stripes glowing with latent Chaos energy from their base DNA. He used his energy sword, a weapon of his own design, to block what he couldn't dodge...But its energy supply was limited to no more than a minute, if he stretched it. A kink he still had to work out.

He was accompanied by Quickshot, a sharpshooter who blasted her way through battle with two Standard Wispons, Wrecker, a kid with a certain kind of expertise with a Cube Wispon, and OnePunch, the most boring man in existence, but able to make a sizable dent with his Drill Wispon. Behind them, their explosives expert, a dude wielding a Bomb Wispon and a funny accent by the name of Boom, helped get their leader Jack to safety after one of the Shadow androids had wounded him. Together, this motley crew formed Wolf 6, a Resistance division formed by Knuckles for handling the toughest jobs. And they got such a "brilliant" name because there were 6 of them, and they were all wolves.

Yeah, Knuckles came up with the name, in case you hadn't noticed.

Once the rest of his team got to safety, Edge gathered up all the energy that his sword had absorbed and swung it in a giant wave at the Shadow androids, knocking them back, but not taking them out. He backflipped into the room the team was in as Boom quickly closed the door, Quickshot and Wrecker helping to bandage the wound on Jack's side. "That won't hold them for long." Edge said, panting hard. "And there's no way we can let them leave this lab. The metallic ones are bad enough, but at that type of pure Shadow DNA..." OnePunch mused, trailing off. Something was clearly going through the brown wolf's mind, but Edge chose to ignore it for now. "Boom...Are the explosives ready?" Jack asked, barely staying conscious on the floor below. "Yes, but they won't go off before the androids can escape. One of us needs to stay behind and...Distract them."

The group was silent for a moment. The team was only a few missions into their existence, but all of them had been lucky enough to make it out in the end. Each was willing to lay down their lives for the cause, of course, but...Needing to choose who dies today was not something they ever thought they'd be doing.

Jack used his Void Wispon as a crutch as he got up. "Well...Guess it was fun while it lasted, guys..." He said, barely taking two steps forward before collapsing. OnePunch caught him mid-fall. "Sir, respectfully speaking-"

"I told you to stop it with that sir crap, OnePunch. Just call me Jack." Jack interrupted. "Right...Jack...Respectfully speaking, you're in no shape to distract them. And even if you were, I'd still protest due to your importance as the leader of this team." OnePunch said. "As such, I shall carry this burden for you."

The entire group gasped in shock. "You...You can't!" Wrecker managed to sputter out. "It is not a choice I like making...But it is one I must make regardless. It has been an honor to serve with you all." One Punch said, before handing a letter to Edge. "I have a sister in the Resistance. Please ensure she receives this letter, as it puts my affairs in order." Edge nodded, sadly, as he took the letter. The rest of the group began clearing out as Boom hit a button on his Wispon. "You've got five minutes."

OnePunch nodded in acknowledgement before opening the door and walking out. The Shadow Androids looked at him in confusion. "My friend, as this is our last battle together, please ensure that you vacate in a timely manner. There's no need for us both to die tonight." He whispered to the Wisp in his Wispon. It beeped in sad agreement. The Shadow androids approached, unsure of what he was doing. "Just between me and you guys? I always liked Sonic better!" OnePunch said, as he charged into battle for the final time.
