A/N: Another couple of places ticked off for my Facebook group xx This won't be a long story, just two chapters, but too big to be a one-shot xx Alexis
Isabella Williams, formerly known as Bella Swan, aged twenty-two; almost twenty-three was getting on a plane for Seattle Washington. She was leaving from her new home state of Pennsylvania, where she had moved for college. Once she'd graduated from Penn State, she just stayed in the area. She still had years of studying to do, but she had taken a gap year for personal reasons. Living at first in Altoona, then moving to Bath where she met her very handsome future. She had been out at a club with friends and he was just looking for a quick bite! He went from stranger to love of her life, in mere hours. She now kissed him goodbye and he promised to be there as soon as he could. But he had to sort out one small bit of business first, an old friend had called with some information they could use.
She was going ahead because it was her father who had been injured, just how was not really clear! The six and a bit hour flight out there beat the forty-four-hour drive hands down. Billy Black, her father's best friend had eventually after a whole week having passed called her. He was extremely evasive to the point of deceptiveness! She was very confused and a little annoyed by his clearly sexist attitude while trying not to tell her anything. He was treating her like a foolish woman who wouldn't or couldn't understand what had happened. Bella was less than amused; he had no right to make those kinds of assumptions. She was convinced that when she arrived he would pat her on the head, and tell her not to overtax her little brain. If the old fart wasn't in a wheelchair she'd knee him in the balls for his attitude!
Small-town behaviour was one of the things she'd hated when she lived there and hell teeth it looked like nothing had changed. That was one thing she loved about her dad, Chief of Police Charlie Swan, he was a fair man. He never once treated her as anything less than his equal. Well as equal as a father and daughter can be. He taught her how to shoot, how to hunt and survive off of the land and how to never, ever get lost out there in the wilderness. She aced pop quizzes in college using her father's teachings. Not many people know which side of a tree moss grew on or how it helped you find North when you can't see the sun because of the aforementioned trees. Not that she really needs any of that knowledge now, but it's always good to have a broad base of information in one's life.
Only the arrogant think you don't need to know the general things about the world around you. Bella made really good time and on reaching Seattle she bought a jeep to run around in, feeling they might be here a while. God, Bella hated Forks and all it stood for, it was a past she'd rather forget. Especially when she found out her father was at the Rez clinic this whole time and not the large hospital in Forks. Now she knew she would have a bit of a fight on her hands. So hauling out her cell she made her second call of the day. The first had been too arranged for an ambulance to go and collect her dad from the clinic.
"Billy it's Isabella! Let's not beat around the bush, an ambulance is on its way to the clinic to pick up my father. If you obstruct them in their job in any way, I will send in the police. Do you understand me?
I am his next of kin and he gave me, his power of attorney. This should tell you all you need to know!" She barked into the phone, insinuating her dad didn't trust him,
And then Bella hung up before he could formulate some lie, some farfetched story to cover his tracks. There was only one way to deal with men like Billy and that was to steamroll over them repeatedly! Now she only needs to wait for the intimidation party to arrive. Well, they will have to knock and they won't be getting in either, because Bella will be at the hospital awaiting her dad's arrival. Her first stop is to the station to find out why they allowed him to be taken to the clinic and not the vastly superior hospital here in Forks.
"Assistant Chief Robb? Can you tell me why you allowed my father to be treated in La Push and not at Forks Memorial?
Also why exactly didn't you inform me he was hurt? I am his daughter, his only next of kin and I have to find out a week after the event from Billy Black!" Bella demanded as she walked through the door and caught the idiot napping in her dad's chair,
"I, well Billy said...!" he stammered at her,
"Billy said! What exactly does anything that pertains to the Chief of Police of Forks, have to do with Billy Black?" she queries and sees him gulp nervously,
"He said it happened near the Rez and it was easier to take him there" he continued feeling more confident,
"As a stopgap measure yes, and when you went down there you would, of course, have him transferred! Why didn't you? Have you not actually seen your Chief, made sure everything was okay and it was an accident?
Because I can imagine your boss, my father will be pissed at how you've handled this. You could have called on the Chief from Port Angeles if you didn't know how to do your job!" she replied and he bridled at the blatant insult,
"Miss Swan, I know how to do my job" he blustered,
"That would be Mrs Williams and clearly you don't if you can't even remember I'm married! You got to play at being Chief then too, while dad attended my wedding. Took his three months to sort out that mess too, if I remember rightly!" she all but spat at him,
"I don't have to stand here and listen to this!" he snapped angrily,
"Oh, as a public official yes you do and even if you are the law, you're not above it, Deputy Chief! Remember I'm a cop's daughter, I know the law. Probably better than you do! Now I, I who have only been in town thirty minutes have sent an ambulance to retrieve the real Chief.
If they try to stop him from being moved, saying he's too ill to be transferred, then you will do your job and get him to a proper hospital facility and not left in an under-funded clinic! The reservation clinic is great for minor injuries, but they can't handle real trauma and you should have known that!
Don't make me go above your head to get your boss, the Chief of Police the proper treatment! Because if he dies, you will never get his job and I will sue you personally for negligence!" She states looking the lazy ass in the eye and he flinched looking really afraid,
Bella had never liked this guy, even when she lived here she didn't think much of him. He was lazy and never did his own work if he could get away with it. One of those smarmy brown nosers that everyone hates, but you can never pin anything on them! She knew her dad always threatened to do something about him but never did! Trouble was, in a small town candidates are slim for the local police department. Maybe this would be the cock-up too far! Once upon a time everything and everybody intimidated Bella, but not anymore. After fending off teenage boys and their overly pushy fathers here, then college boys at Penn State she had toughened up. But the biggest change was when she met her destiny, she changed and grew in so many ways after that.
Bella had become someone different, something different! She wasn't just an ordinary twenty-two-year-old, she was also a vampire! But unlike most she had a gift; hers helped her out of many situations. It had the ability to cloak her and let her appear to be normal, to look human. Better yet she could cloak her mate and friends too. He really enjoyed this after all those years of constantly hiding from the direct sunlight and very rarely like at present, left her side. He in addition had a gift which made him appear to have no scent; he just took on the flavour of the world around him. He was happy to be able to share it with his mate. So they could both look like humans and give off no vampire scent, a win-win for them both. Garrett Williams had been a nomad until he met Bella and things changed for them both.
He in a sense had settled down, happy to be wherever she was and she became more outgoing and adventurous. But they gelled as a team and worked well together. They had many friends whom Garrett had cultivated over many long years, some nomads like he was and some from covens. Never once since he was changed during the Great War for independence from Britain, had Garrett ever wanted to have a home or any of the trappings associated with it. But now with Bella, he wanted it all, that's why he married her when she was still human. He bought her a house near the city and built her a cabin in the mountains; nothing was too good or too much for his mate and wife. But she never wanted for much, not because he was always showering her with gifts and money. No, she didn't need much to prove he loved her, just him!
Once Bella was at the hospital all became clear why the Quileutes hadn't sent him here. The Chief of staff was a vampire of all things, what is the world coming to she wondered. She pretended to not know what he was and explained the situation to him. She wanted her father treated here and Billy Black had no right to interfere with that. She noted the doctor was very good at hiding what he was; he had a good bedside manner and truly knew what he was doing. In under an hour, Chief Swan was now in the care of Carlisle Cullen and as predicted the party from the reservation arrived, headed by Billy Black and his very suspiciously behaving son Jacob. He was that boy, you know the one that won't take no for an answer. Three years her junior and still he couldn't get a clue, but then neither could his father.
Bella had, had no interest in Jake or living on the Rez for the rest of her life. But not because there was anything wrong with that life. No, everyone had always known her plans for college and the future, only Jake and Billy ignored them as not relevant to their plans for her! She only hoped they would back off now she was married, of course, they didn't know to whom or that he was a vampire! But if they didn't take a telling they would learn quickly and possibly be hurt in the process!
"Miss Swan, I don't know if you remember me? I'm Sam Uley" one of the party proffered,
"It's Williams, not Swan!" she replied and heard a huffing noise from Jake,
"What Swan not good enough for you now? Ashamed of your roots? Forks to backwater for the great Bella Swan?" he spat at her stupidly and his father shook his head nervously,
"No Jacob, my husband's name is Williams! Why wouldn't I change my name? Did your mother stay a Wolfe when she married your father?" she ask patiently as if talking to a child,
"You're married!" he screeched,
"Did you not tell him, Billy? Keeping secrets from your precious son? Yes, I'm married and have been for nearly two years!" she explained before turning away from them all,
"Your father's settled in now Mrs Williams, you can go through and see him," a nurse said and Bella moved towards the room only to find herself shadowed,
"Is he your father Sam? Or yours Jacob? No, so I think it's best if you all left now. I can always have security posted if I have to" she stated before firmly moving away from them all, but could hear them even as she went out of view,
"She's married dad, married and you knew?" Jake whined like the spoiled brat he was,
"Yes! I knew it would upset you son. It was unfortunate that she got away from us!" Billy replied sickeningly,
"You didn't tell me she was married, given herself to someone else! She was meant to be mine; you promised she would be mine! Charlie got hurt because the red-headed bloodsucker saw her in my mind and said he was going to take her away from me!
We were fighting about her and her dad got in the way! It was unfortunate, we didn't see him until it was too late. I slashed him open and the leech broke his legs because nobody told me the truth, this is your fault dad!" Jake ranted, blaming his father for his own failings,
Bella pretended to not hear anything or to react in any way because the doctor was doing enough of that for both of them. Looks like he knows who the red-headed vampire that reads minds is! Well, that explains why Billy was keeping it all hush-hush, his shape-shifting son and a very immature vampire were fighting over a woman whom neither had any rights too! Just how bored are they, that they would be reduced to such pitiful behaviour? She expected it from Jake, but now an equally self-absorbed vampire too.
"So Dr Cullen, what did the clinic say happened to my father?" Bella asked knowing full well now what happened,
"Bear attack, they say here in his notes! Clawed his chest badly and threw him enough to break both legs. The clinic set his legs but I think that one may need to be pinned. I need comprehensive x-rays done, but. Well, to be frank, I don't think your father will be able to work again; he's going to have a limp! If he'd been brought here sooner, I could have at least saved him that" He explained scornfully,
He was not keeping his voice down so the wolves would know this was their fault. So the gasps from the hallway were clearly heard, if you were supernatural that is!
"Fuck! Are you happy now Jake, you've ruined a good man's life for what? A pipedream!" Sam Uley growled,
Bella was devastated for her father; his work was his life and now, what would he do?
"A bear you say? Those don't look like bear claw marks to me, more like wolf! But there is no known wolf that size in the world!"Bella remarks, getting a dig in at these fools,
"No, Mrs Williams it's bear I'm sure!" the doctor mumbles, knowing it was a blatant lie,
"Well, I'll have to disagree with you, since you're a doctor for people and I'm the one studying to be a Wildlife Biologist. Subsequently, I have spent the last four years looking at this kind of thing in great detail. Let me assure you that no bear ever left marks like those on anything or anybody!
I expect this to be fully documented Doctor! Everything official and above board, that's why I had him transferred here!" she stated and the pregnant pause was palpable,
"Of course, there is no question of this facility not doing its best for our own Chief of Police" he replied,
But she heard the catch in his breath, this could cause them all big trouble, it was true, that was what she was studying, but Bella wasn't certain she'd go back to it now. But nobody here needed to know that! She was sure this would set the cat amongst the pigeons! As she sat by her father's bedside holding his hand, Bella heard the doctor in the corridor making an urgent call. Sounded like his mate to her, he obviously needed her counsel and that's the way it should be. Bella was really wishing Garrett was here now, she needed his support. Not that she needed him to sort things out for her, but just the moral support he always brought. As if knowing he was needed her cell chirped and it was a text from him.
'Minor problem, Carlisle knows me. Peter has had a brainwave, I know rare!' G x
Followed by one from Peter.
'Not funny, I'm givin' him a makeover. He's goin' to be his own descendant' PW x
Then a second from Garrett,
'You need to pick up your human husband Gary at the airport in Port Angeles in 2 hours. Love you ' G x
Well, that was weird, but no more than usual. Thank goodness for Peter Whitlock, they were good and close friends to Garrett and Bella. Oh my lord, Jasper Whitlock! He had a near miss fifty years ago with a female vampire. Something about a second-rate seer who fixated on him, to the point of following him everywhere at one point. He had to get the Volturi to warn her to stay away and they fobbed her off to some veggie coven, this must be them! Bella waited for the doctor to reappear and decided on some small talk.
"So Dr Cullen, how do you like Forks? You must have moved here after I left for college. It sure rains here a lot" she waffled politely,
"Yes it does, but we like the quiet life" he had replied,
"We?" Bella quizzed,
"My family and I. I have a wife and four adopted children. Two boys and two girls, all teenagers" he muttered slightly distracted,
"Wow, that seems a handful for you and your wife" Bella exclaimed and he nodded,
"They can be, yes they can be!" was all he said before leaving the room again,
As soon as he had gone a knock sounded on the hospital room door and Sam Uley was there again. Bella huffed; can't they just leave her alone?
"Mrs Williams, I know you don't want us here and for some reason don't trust us! But please don't believe anything the Cullens say to you!" he insists,
"So Dr Cullen saying it was a bear attack is a lie then?" she counters and he splutters,
"No, no that's what happened" he stammers out,
"But you just said not to believe anything he told me, make up your mind!" she pushed his words at him,
"Why don't you like us? What have we ever done to you?" Sam demands annoyed she was getting the better of him,
"They pestered me for years! He dogged my every step for years! Need I go on; Billy acts like Jake's pimp, more than his father. From the moment I hit puberty, he earmarked me for his son's enjoyment whether I wanted him or not and I'm sick of them both. He was a child when I left here to get away and it looks like nothing has changed.
Also, Billy lied to my face about dad's accident, I know it and so do you! I'm not some feeble-minded female! I want nothing to do with them or your tribe, now leave me alone!" she spat out, the years of Jake's annoyance and Billy's misogyny getting to her,
"Wow, they really did a number on you didn't they? I'm sorry I had no idea, nobody did. Chief Swan doesn't either does he?" Sam asked Bella quietly and she shook her head,
Bella hadn't wanted to ruin her dad's friendship with Billy, since she barely lived with him full-time at all and they had been friends since childhood. Because of that, he could never understand why she never wanted to go with him to the reservation or be at home when the Blacks called around. Billy's incessant insisting her father would also be happy if she and Jake got together never rang true.
"It doesn't matter now and he need never know how much of a misogynistic asshole his friend really is!" she huffed out and Sam shrugged and left her in peace,

But Sam was not prepared to let this go. She was the one person they needed on their side right now and she hated everything about the tribe because of their Chief and his son. Did Old Quill know? That they just wanted Bella to fill Jake's bed until his imprint arrived and then she'd be kicked to the curb. That he could do that to his best friend's daughter is sick, no it's disgusting and this was supposed to be their leader! Was he always like this? Yes, his total disregard for Leah's plight stood out now for what it was! Sam still felt so bad about that and how it was handled by the elders, even her own father. She should have been told and maybe she would not have allowed the anger to fester. Sam had pleaded with them to tell her and he would never forgive them for not.
Because even though Emily was the love of his existence, he still had a place in his heart for Leah and he always would.
"Shaman, I would like to talk with you privately, if you please," Sam asked the old wise man on his return to the reservation,
"Ah, young Alpha you are troubled. The ways of common men do not sit well with you!" he replied sagely,
"I have spoken to Mrs Williams, Bella Swan as she once was. The hatred in her heart for the Blacks is almost tangible. They all but physically tied her down and had Jake do the deed! She detests them with the deepest of feelings! But more Billy than Jake, because he should have known better" Sam explained to the Shaman.
"I fear the Chief has lost his way. He's driven his own daughters away with his antiquated ideas of a woman's place. But to treat the daughter of a friend like that is unacceptable. I hear Charlie Swan may not ever work again. Might I suggest you propose to Dr Cullen an offering. Blood of the wolf has great healing power, maybe it may help the Chief!" the old man suggested,
"But who, his daughter wants none of us near her or her father!" Sam mused,
"Who is the least offensive of you all? Whose heart is pure and untainted? Who sees the Chief of Police as a father figure?" the wily old man asked now,
"Seth! Of course" Sam says jumping to his feet,
Sam wrote a note to the Cullen patriarch stating, that they would have him give Chief Swan shifter blood in the hopes it might heal his ails. Seth would be the blood donor for the Chief as their way of recompense for Jake's part in the incident. How he dealt with Edward was up to him. It must be person to person and the doctor could not take any of the blood or under any circumstances test it! He then sent for Seth and explained the severity of the cause and to caution him about Bella Williams. With the note in hand Seth set off for the hospital, his heart was light and he was pleased to have been chosen to help Charlie Swan.

Carlisle Cullen was having a dilemma; he knew Edward needed to be punished. Not only for lying to him and Esme but for his heinous actions to the Chief of Police. He said he knew nothing about the Chief's accident when asked nor had he heard anything. But now it turns out it was he who smashed the Charlie Swan's legs! This wasn't the first time he lied to them, but it was one of the most serious times. His problem was he needed Edward's mind reading to see what Bella Williams was going to do with any evidence of supernatural foul play she found. Not that she would know that's what it was and then there was the fact Jacob and Edward had exposed what they were to Chief Swan! This was turning into a disaster of epic proportions. What Edward didn't know was that Carlisle had been issued a warning about him.
If Edward cocked up again he would become a permanent member of the Volturi and on a short leash! As he mulled things over Carlisle realised a wolf has returned, but why? Ah, not just any wolf, young Seth, he was without a doubt the nicest of them all and didn't seem to mind the Cullens vampire scent as much as the others did. In fact, his wasn't as unpleasant either, Carlisle wondered why.
"Hello Seth, what brings you here?" he asked as the boy entered the corridor,
"Can't sneak up on you Doc, can I? I have a message and a job to do. Can I talk to Mrs Williams while you look at it?" Seth enquired,
"You can try, but don't take it personally when she rebuffs you, okay?" Carlisle says kindly to the boy,
Carlisle rushed to his office and opened Sam's note carefully, oh my, this could be the answer! If it works and Chief Swan makes a perfect recovery well that would be wonderful. He was a little mad about the restrictions placed on himself, he would have loved to get a look at their genetic makeup, but beggars can't be choosers. If the wolves are right this could be a miracle for the Chief. The only problem left was he knew about the wolves and vampires now! But if the scuttlebutt was right he was more than a little involved with a Quileute woman. Most would assume it was Sue Clearwater, but they would be wrong it was Joy Ateara, maybe that's why the Shaman was being so helpful. She was after all his daughter-in-law or was, so he cared about her very much.
Carlisle sighed, now he had less reason to call on Edward because that boy tends to cause complications, where there need be none and Alice, was no better. Talk of the devil and they are sure to appear, his landline rang suddenly. It was Alice asking why he kept disappearing and when was Charlie's daughter arriving, she should have been there by now.
"Wolves Alice, they have been in and out all day. Seth's here at present and what do you mean, Bella Williams has been here for a few hours now?" he explained more than a little confused.

Bella was just sitting staring into space when a timid knock sounded on the door. She called out enter and a tall gangly teen, well she thought he was a teen entered. He was obviously Quileute, but she sensed this visitor would not be looking for trouble.
"How is he? The Chief, is he okay?" he asked worriedly,
"You really care about him, don't you ...?" she asked, he was the first to actually ask,
"Seth, Seth Clearwater. Yes, your dad has been so kind to my family and he's been helping me with my maths homework!" he replied in a rush,
Bella started to laugh, for the first time since she got here she was relaxed and this man-child and an obvious wolf was the one who managed it.
"He used to have to help me with mine too. I could never understand it all, Algebra is the worst!" she told him and they both laughed at that,
"He has a calm way of explaining it and making it make sense, Mrs Williams" Seth said smiling warmly at her,
"It's Bella, Seth. Just Bella!" she insisted surprising herself,
What did astonish her was when Carlisle Cullen appeared Seth was relaxed and non-confrontational. In fact, he seemed to like the doctor too.
"Hey Doc, the Chief helped Bella with her maths homework as well. I thought it was just me that couldn't understand it" Seth was happy he shared common ground with her and it showed as he spoke,
"Ah, maths! You either love it or hate it there is no middle ground I fear. So, Mrs Williams, Seth is here for our blood drive and we thought it might help your father to have a transfusion to wash out any toxins, healthy blood fights infections faster, of course," Carlisle clarified as nonchalantly as he could,
So they aimed to use shifter blood to try and heal her father, well she wouldn't stand in the way of that.
"Well, that's my cue to leave, blood makes me squeamish. My own or other people's it really turns my stomach; it's the awful rusty iron smell!
My husband Gary will be arriving soon, so I'll just collect him while you do that" she said as an excuse and Carlisle was relieved, while Seth laughed.
As she was preparing to leave the hospital Bella saw two teenage vampires arrive and rather than being accosted outside she stopped to talk to one of the nurses. She recognised her from when she was human and a frequent patient here. Edward of course, couldn't wait and interrupted them.
"Sorry son, did you have an emergency?"Bella asked sarcastically,
"No, I wanted to talk to you!" he replied as if it should be obvious,
"Well, you're a rude young man aren't you? I was already talking to someone else, so you will just have to wait your turn!" Bella explained to the idiot who looked taken aback,
She shook her head and rolled her eyes at the nurse who laughed and Edward looked confused as to why she didn't feel the need to talk to him, who was plainly more important than the nurse. She could hear Alice berating him. Saying he was making a fool of himself and just then Carlisle appeared and ordered them both to his office. He nodded to her and after a few more minutes Bella walked outside and climbed into her jeep. She was trying not to laugh at the temerity of the boy and that's all he was a boy! So that was the little ass who broke her father's legs fighting over her with the other little punk! What an obnoxious know-it-all, she knew the type. So full of their own self-importance that they just didn't see how stupid they really were. Edward actually made Jake seem more mature and that was laughable!
She would have to think of suitable punishments for them; because there was no way she was letting them get away with this! They will never learn anything by not having to pay up for the consequences of their actions. But that would have to wait; she had a mate to pick up.
