Boston Homicide Detective Jane Rizzoli walk into NYPD 16th Precinct, Manhattan, home of the Special Victims Unit.
"I'm looking for Lt.Benson, please."
"I'm Sgt. Tutuola, can I help you?"
"I'm Detective Jane Rizzoli, Boston Homicide."
"I'll get her for her. Just a sec"
He knocks on Benson's office door and opens it. "Captain, there is a Homicide Detective from Boston here to see you".
"Thanks, Finn, show her in".
"Hello, I'm Captain Olivia Benson. How can I help you?
Jane extends her hand, "Detective Jane Rizzoli, Boston Homicide."
"Detective, please take a seat. "
"Thanks, Captain. Sorry I asked for Lt. Benson."
"So, how can I help you Detective?"
"I got your name from Ed Tucker at a conference a couple of years ago. He said you were the best."
"Ahhhh...Tucker. He was a good guy. Better than the bad rep most IAB guys get."
"Yeah, I got stuck in a conference with him. I didn't want to learn more about IAB, but it was great to talk to him afterwards. He had nothing but positive things to say about you. "
Olivia Benson giggles a little, "Well, if it was about 3 years ago, we were involved at that time. Getting to know him outside of IAB was a joy. We lost him last year."
"I'm really sorry to hear that. He seemed like a really good guy."
"So, anyway. How can I help you?"
"I don't know where to begin. There is so much to tell you. Basically, the Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been abducted and I have reason to believe that she is here. I know it's not a sex crime, at least I hope not. She was taken by a serial killer that I have a history with and he took her because she's my best friend. He does everything possible to get to me. At one point he convinced a young woman to get plastic surgery so that she could get close to my brother, in order to get to me. He's been in prison. He's managed to escape. He works with accomplices to do some of his bidding. The rest of my team thinks he's still in Boston, or the area. My gut tells me he's here."
"Wow. Okay. Does he have a history in NY? And I understand the gut thing. Sometimes in SVU, that's all we've got to go on."
"He doesn't have a history in NY, at least not one that I have seen. I got a message from him. He hides clues in his messages. That's how we've always found him in the past".
"Detective..."
"Please, just call me Jane or Rizzoli."
"Okay, Jane, let me bring my team in on this and see what we can do."
Olivia's phone rings.
"Captain Benson. Yes. Ok. Yes, sir, she's here now. Okay. Yes. Will do. And yes, I will. Thank you, sir."
"Well, Jane, that was my Chief of Detectives. He just talked to your Chief of Detectives. Apparently a Sgt. Korsack has convinced him to go with your gut. So, we're officially on this case with you."
"Captain, thank you so much. Can we do a briefing tomorrow? I can get my remote access and we can access the case files on your computers. I can play the message I got and I can fill you in on the other details. This is very important to me."
Olivia gets up from her desk, opens her door and yells for Finn.
"Captain?"
"Finn, we don't need the formalities right now. You've met Jane. We're taking on a case with her to find a woman that's been abducted. She's the Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I'll let her fill you in on what she's told me so far."
Jane fills in Finn. He tells Olivia that he'll make sure Rollins and Tamin are in early. Olivia tells him to call Carisi. If he's available he'll be a big help.
"Liv, I'm on it. Jane, we'll find her. We'll make a good team." Finn leaves Olivia's office and goes to make the calls.
Olivia asks Jane where she's staying.
"Honestly, I came right here from LaGuardia. I have no idea where to go at this point. I haven't eaten either. Actually, I need a beer. What can you recommend?"
"Jane, tell ya what, since Ed sent you to me and this is such a personal case to you, why don't you stay with me tonight. I have a young son, but I have the room. We can get some beer and some takeout and you can tell me more about your friend."
"Maura. Her name is Dr. Maura Isles. She's brilliant. She's she's complicated. She's my best friend."
Jane tears up a little. She gently wipes her eyes.
"I'd like that. Thank you, Captain"
"Olivia, call me Olivia."
They leave the Precinct. Jane pulling her luggage behind her. Maura would be happy. She is using real luggage and not a bag.
They swing by a corner Bodega for some beer, a bottle of wine for Olivia and Jane grabs a few other things. They pick up Noah and head to Olivia's place. They get there and Olivia orders take out. Jane is playing with Noah.
Olivia is getting Noah ready for bed. He tells Olivia that he wants to give Detective Rizzoli a hug goodnight. Jane hears him and it makes her smile. Probably the first time since Maura was abducted.
When Olivia comes back from putting Noah down she sees Jane sitting on the couch, beer in her hand, but she's leaning over, her arms are on her legs and her head is hung. She remained strong during her initial meeting with Olivia and Finn, but she is losing it. Hoyt has Maura. They have to find her.
"Jane, you okay?", Olivia puts her hand on Jane's shoulder and takes a seat next to Jane.
"No, not really. I'm beginning to lose it. I made it through our meeting just fine, without the emotions, but I can't do it anymore".
"Then tell me, emotions and all, everything. Tell me about your history with this guy. Why did he take Maura?"
"Several years ago he abducted me. Almost killed me. These scars on my hands, they are from him. He stabbed my hands. My partner at the time, Korsack, was able to find me before he killed me. He shot Hoyt but didn't kill him. He went to prison. He was almost a doctor. He is very skilled. He was kicked out of medical school for fondling a corpse. He has a military background. He has friends. Friends that have helped him abduct and kill people. He escaped one time, and I had the opportunity to kill him, and I didn't. Instead I shot his hands. I told him that we matched. I told you that there was a woman that got plastic surgery. She was a victim that had full on Stockholm Syndrome. Hoyt had killed her husband years before and kept him on ice. We found his body on a bench at a bus stop. My brother found a pretty new girlfriend at the same time. They came over to my place to cook me dinner. She said that he went out for beer. I went to change clothes and I found my brother tied up in my room. That's when she entered with a gun. She was going to kill my brother. Unbeknownst to me at the time, Maura and my team figured out that my brother's girlfriend was the wife of our victim. We assumed that Hoyt had killed her when he abducted her. My brother, while tied up, managed to shoot this woman right before Maura, Korsack and my partner came thru the door to save us. Hoyt is sick. Sorry, that was a lot. This makes me emotional."
"Jane, I understand. I was abducted once too. It messed with me for a long time. I get it. William Lewis was a sick guy. He was also a master manipulator. He and Hoyt sound a lot alike."
"There is a lot about Maura too that may come up in this case. All of that has already been ruled out. She was adopted at birth by a wealthy family. Her birth father was Patrick "Paddy" Doyle. He was a South Boston mob boss. She didn't know this until a couple of years ago when she had a victim on her autopsy table. Her DNA matched him. She was shocked to learn there was a brother. She didn't know anything about her biological family. When we discovered that the victim was the son of Paddy Doyle she didn't know what to think. Then she met him face to face when he came to identify his son's body. There was a lot of drama after that. Fast forward a couple of years and I almost killed him in an ambush."
"Wow. And your friendship survived that? You must have a strong bond."
"She was extremely mad at me for a while. I felt horrible. But, yes, our bond is strong."
The two Detectives decide they need some sleep so that they can start the hunt for Hoyt and Maura in the morning.
